October 8th was the
much anticipated 2016
Think Big Dance Marathon event. Early that morning,
the committee members along with more than 130
adult volunteers and student leaders prepared for
the event. Hundreds of students gathered in the gym
at 9 am ready for a day filled with dancing, games,
and activities all to raise money for pediatric cancer.
Everyone learned the group dance which was
performed throughout the day, and participated in a
variety of activities which included dodge ball,
basketball, human hungry hungry hippos, and more.
There was a luminary walk inside the elementary
school with bags decorated for loved ones. The day
was filled with many fun activities; dancing, food, and
refreshments. As the night wore down everyone
gathered in the gym excited to see the amount
raised with volunteers gathered on the stage to show
the grand total. Think Big raised an amazing
$37,028.78 for families affected by pediatric cancer!
The dance marathon was definitely
a success and will help assure
children that they will never have to
fight alone. Congratulations to all
the organizers, student leaders,
volunteers, sponsors and partici-
pants who helped raise money on
this day and throughout the year all
to benefit the Janet Weis Children’s
Hospital through the Think Big
Foundation. ~Sarah Cooper `18
Think BIG 2016
The end of the first
marking period is ap-
proaching, but there
is still time to set new
goals. This year’s
theme for MCA’s news reporting class is #MakeItHappen. Making it happen applies to school or
personal goals you may have, but never got around to. Our administration has goals for students to
become more involved, strive for academic excellence, and keep a safe learning environment for all.
However, you can create your own personal goals too! For example, you could try to get more
organized, make new friends, or even get a job. Setting goals provides motivation to work harder
and continue to make progress throughout the year. Make it happen! It’s all about overcoming ob-
stacles, moving forward and finding solutions. Let’s make the rest of the 2016 – 2017 school year
one to remember! ~Sara Parker `17

Shoe Drive Kick off your shoes and save some pups! The Mommy and Me Rescue is hosting a shoe drive, that’s asking for
25 pairs of shoes from every participant in order to reach a goal of 100 bags of shoes by November 1. The
fundraiser is sponsored by Woff Trax Inc., an organization that offers money to shelters in exchange for how far
you walk your dog. The rescue will receive forty cents for each pound of shoes to go towards the dogs
at the rescue, and the shoes will be donated to developing nations like Ghana, Haiti, and Bolivia. Selena
Guererro ‘17 and Sarah Freeman ’17 are organizing the event as their senior project. Donation
boxes for shoes can be found in the high school and elementary lobbies. Start bringing in
your new or gently worn shoes now and save some shelter dogs. ~Miranda Fiamoncini `19
Musical Auditions The Mount Carmel Area Music Department is retelling
the classic story of “Beauty and the Beast”. Auditions
will be held Tuesday November 8th in the high school
auditorium. See Miss Hoopes in the chorus room to
pick up audition materials and sign up for a time slot.
“Beauty and the Beast” is a magical tale of love, death,
and everything in between. Available roles include the
main characters, Belle, who trades her freedom for her
father’s freedom, and the Beast who started out a man
but was cursed by a witch, doomed because he could not see her inner beauty. Other roles include the hilari-
ous Lumiere, a candelabra, and the all-too-serious Cogsworth, a clock, as well as Mrs. Potts and Chip, a moth-
er and son turned into a tea pot and cup. If a main role isn’t your style, there are plenty of ensemble parts
available. Beauty and the Beast is set for March 17 & 18 at 7:30 p.m. ~ Alexa Collins `18

New MCA Website Mount Carmel Area School District has a brand
new website designed by Mr. David McFee. This
site has evolved to help everyone find what they
need. The top section of the site has the school’s
contact information. For parents and students there
is a landing page on the top menu that leads to a
separate page with other important links. The sec-
ond bar leads to several categories which include
academics, athletics, and the arts. You can find in-
formation on clubs, the bell schedules, and lunch
and breakfast menus there. The rest of the front page has up to date information about recent and upcoming
events with the monthly district calendar at the bottom. Take a few moments and explore the new Mount
Carmel Area School District Website. With this new online resource, MCA hopes to make information easier
to find for the benefit of all people interested in Mount Carmel Area. ~Zachary Hunter `18

600+ games for Jose Gonzalo, MCA Statistician
A statistician is someone who works with theoretical or applied
statistics, and occasionally, these skills are applied to sports. Our
MCA football statistician, Jose Gonzalo, had a special game against
Shikellamy. Friday, September 2 marked his 600th straight Mount
Carmel Area Red Tornadoes football game keeping stats and he
doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Jose first started his streak
back in 1966 when Mount Carmel took on Carlisle at the Silver
Bowl. A long decade later, he was named our statistician. Now, in
2016, Jose is still going strong providing accurate numbers for our
coaches, athletes, and the public. For his 600th game at Shikellamy, the cheerleaders gifted him a game ball
and the following week against the Southern Tigers, Jose was an honorary captain as he went out for the coin
toss. In an interview about his milestone, Jose said “I’m already thinking about No. 700.” We thank you, Jose,
for over 600 games as Mount Carmel Area’s football statistician. ~Colin Herb `20
Coal Bucket Season! It’s MCA Football fans favorite time of year, the Coal Bucket game! The Coal
Bucket game is the most anticipated game in the entire regular season for MCA fans
and players. This year marks the 20th year MCA has the bucket and the 21st should
we win. This year the game will be played at Kemp Memorial Field in Shamokin. The
Coal Bucket Game, as every Tornado fan knows, has a lot of history behind it. This
game dates all the way back to October 28th 1893. It took a 6 year break from 1928
to 1933 and was started back up again in 1934 and has been played since. The all-
time record of the game is 44-15-2, Mount Carmel. MCA has an in school pep rally
before the game to get fans and players excited! The game will be played October
28th and will also be the feature Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) High School
Football Game of the week Courtesy of the WKMC TV students and staff. It’s the
best time of the year Tornado fans! Make sure you get out to the game and support
our Red Tornadoes! ~Bradley Shurock ‘20

Teacher Kick Ball Classic For the 2nd year in a row, Mount Carmel Area Education
Association and Southern Colombia Area Education
Association teachers came together for a good cause to
kick out hunger. This year MCA played kickball at
Southern to collect canned and boxed food items to give
to local food pantries. They collected more than 700
food items!. Southern won the game against MCA 2 to 1
and everyone had fun for a good cause. ~Tyler Krah `18

While the Frisbee teams took the
soccer field by storm, the Back to
School Fun Fair was in full swing!
Whether it was MCALive News
Reporting with their ‘photo booth’, or
Chorus, Reading, and Spanish clubs
with their nachos and desserts, the
Fun Fair seemed to be a hit again this
year! There was a sidewalk chalk
challenge hosted by the Art Club.
The TV studio’s famous buffalo
chicken dip was a hit with students,
since the spiciness warmed them up
quickly! The day was filled with lots of
laughter and fun and we’re looking
forward to next year’s annual Back to
School Fun Fair. ~ Alexa Collins `18
