Project 5 2 Hope Over Heroin Hope over Heroin was birthed in 2014 after we began to see the largest wave of over- doses our country had experienced in the previous 30+ years. An abundance of Heroin, Oxycotin, Fentanyl and other Opiates, as well as Cocaine and Meth had begun taking our region and a generation even further under its power. Our team, which has spent a large part of the last two decades working within the realm of Recovery Ministries, found that the spirit of addiction, and more importantly individual ad- dicts, became our collective heartbreak and mission – to proclaim and provide recovery and redemption. We agreed that it was time and season for The Holy Spirit to break chains and change the narrative that the enemy has always wanted for our country and world. As our Pastor and board member Cleddie Keith says, “…The Tide of history can be for- ever altered and changed by a few, or even just one.” We have taken that to heart every day since. Pastor Lawrence Bishop II and Pastor Billy Price partnered to form an in- credible team of technicians and workers that all have a simple goal – to take Jesus to the streets like we have never seen, and to never be content with doing church as usual. A gen- eration of addicts, who may never come to a regular Sunday church service while battling addiction, have been able to find a place of refuge, connected again to the Power of the Holy Spirit, right where they lived, used, and battled to stay alive. It quickly has become a national collaborative ministry, founded and led by pastors, and has since taken us all across the country, as far west as Montana and as far east as Metro D.C. It has been supernaturally fueled by the Holy Spirit! We humbly understand that we could have never accomplished even a part of this huge vision, without the Miracles of God! These weekend long events are filled with live music, free food, stories of transforma- tion, video and multi media presentations, all aimed at providing a spectacle, in order to connect people who need help the most, with the specific resources and care they are seek- ing. Hope Over HeroinHope over Heroin was birthed in 2014 after we began to see the largest wave of over-doses our country had experienced in the previous 30+ years. An abundance of Heroin, Oxycotin, Fentanyl and other Opiates, as well as Cocaine and Meth had begun taking our region and a generation even further under its power.

Our team, which has spent a large part of the last two decades working within the realm of Recovery Ministries, found that the spirit of addiction, and more importantly individual ad-dicts, became our collective heartbreak and mission – to proclaim and provide recovery and redemption. We agreed that it was time and season for The Holy Spirit to break chains and change the narrative that the enemy has always wanted for our country and world.

As our Pastor and board member Cleddie Keith says, “…The Tide of history can be for-ever altered and changed by a few, or even just one.” We have taken that to heart every day since. Pastor Lawrence Bishop II and Pastor Billy Price partnered to form an in-credible team of technicians and workers that all have a simple goal – to take Jesus to the streets like we have never seen, and to never be content with doing church as usual. A gen-eration of addicts, who may never come to a

regular Sunday church service while battling addiction, have been able to find a place of refuge, connected again to the Power of the Holy Spirit, right where they lived, used, and battled to stay alive.

These weekend long events are filled with live music, free food, stories of transforma-tion, video and multi media presentations, all aimed at providing a spectacle, in order to connect people who need help the most, with

God is good. God is faithful.

James 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit the or-phans and widows in their affliction, and to

keep oneself unstained from the world.

I read an article recently on the life of George Müller, a Christian evangelist, pastor, mission-ary and director of a large orphanage in Bristol England in the 1800’s. When I say large orphan-age, Mr. Müller cared for over 10,000 orphans in his lifetime. He ran the orphanages on what he termed the “grace of faith”, never asking anyone but God through prayer, for money. His purpose, was to display the love and glory of God to believ-ers and non believers through the way God provided for the orphans. To show them that God is real and He hears our prayers of faith and He is Faithful to fulfill His promises to us. George Müller heard and answered THE CALL to care for the orphan. Story goes that the orphans he cared for never went hungry, nor did he, and MANY, were the prayers answered of George Müller. He prayed and asked God for what they needed, then stood on the promises of God’s Word as he fed and educated upwards of 2,000 children at a time, no small task. God provided for the orphanage through PEOPLE whose hearts were influenced by the Holy Spirit to do-nate to the orphanage- their time, talents, money, food, etc. So as I read this article, I am humbled. As I read statistics of how many foster children and orphans are in Ohio compared to the number of churches in Ohio, could it be that the Holy Spirit is speaking and we are not hear-ing because we have been stained by the world?

When was the last time we reminded ourselves that we as believers were once orphaned? Or that our Heavenly Father has adopted us by His grace into His family. Do we even understand the place orphans and widows hold in our Fa-ther’s Heart? Psalm 68:5; Deuteronomy 10:18; Jeremiah 22:3; Isaiah 1:17; Job 29:12; What if He didn’t love us or provide a way for us to be

forgiven and adopted? Where would we be? John 14:8.

This past December, we were privileged to spend an amaz-ing day at the Sunrise Chil-dren’s Services headquarters in Mt. Washington, KY, a resi-dential program that “provides care and hope for hurting fami-lies through Christ centered ministries”. Project 5 2 had received a surprise donation of hundreds of stuffed animals from Kings Island in Decem-ber, and what better place for them to go we thought, than a

children’s home for Christmas! (Quite a few were given to ministries in Hamilton OH also). Along with the stuffed animals, the Lord pro-vided children’s clothes, toys, hygiene items, Bibles, new t-shirts, new socks, a load of canned goods and a full Chipotle dinner for all. The staff at Sunrise gave us a gracious welcome when we arrived and were oh so “polite” as they opened the back of the van only to see a 5 ft. pink, pur-ple and green gorilla staring back at them. We all had a good laugh as I’m sure it was a bit overwhelming! We met the Regional Area Direc-tor, Jake Pelfrey and the Volunteer Coordinator, Karlee Brewer who gave us a tour of the cam-pus. We got to hear of the amazing work God is

The process begins weeks, and even months ahead of the main stage event. An army of com-passionate servant leaders begin to pray, plan and reach out to a city/community through stra-tegic kindness outreaches prior to the event, and that outflow helps to propel momentum – street ministry feeds the hungry, shares the gos-pel and becomes a witness to the Spirit of God in real operation! During our weekend events, we then compile a group of local regional and national faith based, as well as clinical care to join our City of Resources – these ministries and facilities offer immediate detox, recovery programs, outpatient and residential treatment, small groups, therapy and well as educational, awareness and redemption services of all types.

Since 2014, there have been over 100,000 in attendance, over 5,000 salvations and 1,800 baptisms. Most importantly though – the Great Commission of Jesus is realized not just with initial salvations and baptisms, but by provid-ing critical care and connection that provides practical help for new, overcoming Christians to become real disciples – living, walking out and overcoming their addiction and their pasts, by the Power of Jesus. It truly has changed our churches by placing “bystander Christians” out-side their comfort zones and on the front line

of the battles that others are trying so hard to overcome.

Your involvement and support are critically needed. Please consider partnering with us!HopeOverHeroin.com 844-HOPE-777Project 5 2 is honored to be able to supply bak-ery items and Bibles for HOH events.

Life as a Happy Slave

Hidden in the hills, tucked between winding roads, abandoned places and forgotten stories

lies a town where depression and darkness hang like early morning fog. There’s not a lot happening in Jackson, Kentucky except to sit on the porch and watch car after car pass by with-out a second glance. So why did I choose this place? Why did I decide to spend my summer in a place where days are long and nights are heavy? I came because tucked on the winding roads, between hills and wild horses, there is a glimmer of hope; hope found at a place called the Happy Church; Hope named Jesus.

“Welcome to your first official staff meeting!” John exclaimed as we gathered in his living room the morning after I had arrived at the Hap-py Church. This place had become like my sec-ond home over the years, but for some reason I

doing there. We were doubly blessed to meet a few of the young male residents who lived at this location called Spring Meadows, a residen-tial facility for boys ages 12-18 who have been removed from their homes mostly due to abuse or neglect. One by one, the young men came up to us and introduced themselves. Of course my heart was overwhelmed, as we wondered what each of their stories were that brought them to

Sunrise. The boys were on a break from class but we had the opportunity to quickly encour-age them before we left. That’s when the tears started, and quite honestly, they didn’t stop all the way home as we pondered whether the boys thought we were potential foster parents. Even though I was told the children in the Sun-rise foster care program can’t live out of state, I called my daughter that night anyway to ask her what she thought about 6 more brothers.

I’ve had the opportunity to talk more with Jake Pelfrey about Sunrise Children’s Services (SCS) and the following are excerpts from our conver-sation:

Tracy: We know Who, but Jake, what brought you to Sunrise?

Jake: God had healed me at one point in my life and I knew I had Good News, not only of the Gospel, but that God heals brokenness. I know he can heal these children and their families.

Tracy: How did Sunrise get its start?

Jake: It was founded in 1869 by a group of women from the Walnut Street Baptist Church and was called the Louisville Baptist Orphan-age. Years later as it evolved, the name was changed to the Kentucky Baptist Home for Chil-dren and now is called Sunrise.

(Continued from page 1) Tracy: Is Spring Meadows one of a few loca-tions?

Jake: There are 5 Sunrise residential facilities across the state. Spring Meadows in Mt. Wash-ington KY, Crossroads in Elizabethtown and the Cumberland Adventure Program all house boys 12-18 years old. Morehead and Glendale loca-tions both house girls 12-18. The PRTF or Psy-chiatric Residential Treatment Facility in Dan-ville cares for children 5-11 years old. As for

babies, we have “standby” foster families who take them. Another program we have in London, KY is called Youth Support Services, an after school ministry that is fully staffed to help children with homework and studies.

Tracy: How many children are currently with SCS?

Jake: Well Kentucky has recently been ranked among the highest in the country for cases of child abuse and neglect. Our disci-pleship ministries serve to include family ser-vices and counseling also. Currently we have

approximately 800 children between the resi-dential facilities and the foster program. We have a foster care office in every county in KY.

Tracy: What happens to the kids who turn 18?

Jake: We are in the process of developing a new program here at Sunrise called Venture On. Its purpose is to help a child who is deemed ready at 18 years old to transition to independ-ence. We want to match them with a mentor who will walk through life with them until the age of 25. We are finding companies who will partner with us to offer entry level jobs and we encourage independent living in one of our apartment buildings we own in Paducah and Murray, which are near to colleges, towns and public transportation. Their mentor or advisor stays in contact to help in whatever is needed, for example, college applications, housing, budgeting, transportation, etc. At the age of 25, we ask the person to return to Sunrise if possi-ble, and become a mentor to someone else.

Tracy: Jake what was the biggest eye opener for you when you came to SCS?

Jake: I never realized that a 12 year- old could feel hopeless. I never knew what that looked like in a child… to never have anyone instill

If you pray and fast with a pure heart (Isaiah 58) as you feed God’s needy (Matt 25), God will assure us of opportunities to disciple (Matt 28). And when we begin to share resources (Acts 2/Acts 4) across denominational lines as The Church and take the gospel and the love of Jesus Christ to the streets, people will begin to see Jesus (John 3:16).

was still so nervous. The enemy seems to do a pretty good job at making people feel inadequate, ill-equipped and insufficient when they are thrown into new and uncomfortable situations and I was feeling all of those things in this moment. I listened to the ‘Terrible Trio’ (Mike, Randy, and John) and their beautiful, saint-like wives (Connie, Janet, and Chris) sort out details for the upcoming week. They discussed meal plans, bus routes, and planned detailed schedules for the incoming work groups. The calendars I was handed were covered in important dates and colored boxes, which meant lots of planning and lots of organizing. Being the free-spirited, lack-of-a-planner that I am, I was already feeling overwhelmed. Finally, the conversation shifted to me and my role for the upcoming summer. I got out a pen and paper to take notes and was prepared to write down all the projects, guidelines, dates and job descriptions thrown my way.

“You’re pretty much going to be our Happy Slave.” Randy blurted out. And that was all. We all laughed, and I shut my notebook, thankful for the comedic relief. I was already used to the word “Happy” being thrown in front of a lot of terms at this church, but I didn’t mind. I mean it’s pretty hard to com-plain about serving happy meals as a happy slave at the Hap-

py Church, ya know? Little did I know what a significant role this description would have on my time and my experiences in the following months.

If I have learned anything in my time spent as an intern at the Happy Church this past summer it’s that missional, Christ-cen-tered decisions are hard to make. It’s easy to be selfish, proud and feel entitled. It’s easy to sit in my air-conditioned home and waste my day away with meaningless novelties, pretend-ing my life is perfect and wonderful through my Instagram feed. It’s hard to wake up every morning in complete surren-der. It’s hard to not become exhausted and shut-off from days

with an endless to-do list and a constant flow of children who are broken, battered and in desperate need of True

Love. It’s hard to choose the Godly and uncomforta-ble thing over comfort and complacency. It’s hard

to admit my constant need of a Savior when I would rather pretend I had it all together.

It’s even harder to do what 1 Thessalonians 5:16 says and “Re-

joice Always!” Rejoice in lice checks. Rejoice in making one hundred

sandwiches. Rejoice when

I know the abuse these children go through. Rejoice in raking grass. Rejoice in hot days and hotter nights. Rejoice, rejoice, rejoice! Thankfully, Jesus calls us higher than “easy” living. By His grace, we are called to hard and holy things. And thank God He does, because through hard and holy things we are refined, molded and transformed into the likeness of Jesus himself. And shouldn’t that be our ultimate goal?

I can’t complain about being a Happy Slave for the summer, because here’s what I am sure of: There is more freedom in being a slave in Christ than living for myself and my happi-ness. Being a servant is the greatest and highest calling. And in that sense, isn’t everyone called to be a happy slave? I am blessed and thankful for all of your support and encour-agement, and I wouldn’t have traded this experience for an-

ything in the world. I am thankful I was given the opportunity to share the love and gospel of Jesus Christ to a town full of broken and hopeless, children. Thank you to all who helped financially to make this summer possible. Thank you to all who prayed for me. Thank you to all who love me. I’m trying to keep some relationships that I have made there, and I’m sure in the months and years ahead, I will know further why the Lord sent me to Jackson Kentucky this summer.

Love, Abby Reiner

Roanoke Gospel Mission

The Roanoke Gospel Outreach Center contin-ues to minister to the lost, disarrayed and those that need a touch from the Lord Jesus Christ. As we continue to be lights and salt in this dark world the Lord Jesus Christ desires to move by the Power that is in His name and through His Word. In this time and this season, the Lord has been speaking to us to be like Paul in the book of I Corinthians 2:2-5 For I am determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demon-stration of the Spirit and power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. Our hearts are knit with Paul’s heart which is to see the Lord Jesus Christ move by His power and through His Spirit. It is only when we crucify our flesh and allow the rivers of God to flow through our vessels that lives will be transformed by the power, which is in the name of Jesus. This requires us to have surrendered and obedient hearts so we are able to hear His voice.

For the past several months many lives have been touched by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ. Several weeks ago, while I (Scott) was picking people up for morning service. I had a then suddenly moment. While on the way to the outreach building, with a van full of eager people, I suddenly heard a strange noise at a stop light, I opened my window and looked and there it was I had a flat tire. At this point, I de-cided to run into a Stop Mart which was at the stop light. When I went into the little store, this woman came out and all of a sudden she began to say, “Pastor Scott, Pastor Scott, how are you, I have been trying to get in contact with you but I

did not have your number. Let me tell you what has happened in my life.” This woman began to rehearse the goodness of the Lord and how the Lord brought her out of her miry clay and set her feet upon the solid rock of Christ. During her season of homelessness, she came to the outreach center where we prayed and allowed the love of the Lord Jesus Christ to minister to her heart. This woman just was so thankful for all that the Lord was doing. She continued to tell me how she now has her own place and is currently working full time. For several months, she had been praying for the Lord to make a way to contact us once again. The Lord always makes a way for all his people. In this instance, naturally, the van had a flat tire, spiritually, the Lord had a divine appointment for this woman. This is the way of the Lord. He makes a way for His people and if we are sensitive to His Spirit we will be led in the midst of all situations and circumstances. Praise the Lord! Let us contin-ue as the Body of Christ to be sensitive to the leading of the Lord Jesus Christ and allow Him to lead, guide and direct our footsteps.

As we continue to evangelize and wit-ness on the streets of the Roanoke Valley, pray for the strongholds of the enemy be broken and people to truly come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. We count it an honor and a privilege to be servants for the Lord Jesus Christ, who enables us to bring forth the Word of the Lord, so lives could be transformed by the power and the demonstration of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us continue to glory in only the mag-nificence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. It is such a great blessing to partner with Project 5 2 and continue to believe the Lord for a great and mighty outpouring of His Spirit on all men.

1 Peter 4:10-11“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion for-ever and ever. Amen.”.

Loss or... Gain?

“To me to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Phil 1:21). Paul’s life was not a matter of seeking his own comfort or advancement. It was all about seeking the advancement of the Kingdom of God. Paul was “all in” and to live was tanta-mount to serving Christ Jesus. In fact, to die was seen as gain because it would mean that Paul would be freed from his trouble filled life on earth, to rejoice in Christ’s presence. (ESV Study bible commentary)

God continues to work on my heart and mind, especially the last 2 years. He is retraining me and transforming me from the inside out. In a world, and especially in America, where ‘more’ appears to be better, and newer versions of everything are coming faster and faster with people waiting in lines for them, and to gain ‘recognition, status, and stuff’ is where it’s at, and where the U.S. household debt figure has had it’s seventh straight quarterly rise (currently at 12.25 trillion), it appears that contentment is a lost virtue. Or is it?

It causes me to wrestle sometimes with God and with my flesh. Here are a few questions to ponder with me: 1. Can we pursue the Ameri-can Dream and still pursue God’s Kingdom ef-fectively? What does Matt 6:33 look like in that? 2. How do we let God work on the inside of the cup, when all that is marketed is the outside of the cup? Image image image! 3. What are the “gains” in our lives that keep us from seeking a deeper abiding relationship with our Heavenly Father through His Son?

These past 2 years, God has shared with me some nuggets

of truth about loss or gain through people who have had loss. For example, Mother Teresa. This woman forfeited a life as an ordinary nun/teacher in a comfortable convent, to walk the streets of Calcutta and start the Sisters of Char-ity and impact India for all eternity. She lived as a modern day ‘minimalist’, and ministered pow-erfully in God’s Love, power and strength to a culture who did not even want her there. (See the movie, The Letters, for the full report).

My friend Pastor Rick has lost eye sight in both eyes over the past two years, but is one who sees clearly the things of God and can bring the Truth when it comes to Bible knowledge and wisdom. Rick is a true man of God, who we’re honored to call friend. Watchman NEE forfeited his freedom. He spent the last twenty years of his life in prison for his faith in Jesus Christ, which sparked revival in China as well as the prison where he served time. Dr. Osborne Richards is one of the holiest men I know. He is currently in South America with 4th stage Par-kinson’s Disease. He is still able to hear from heaven, and make shudder the gates of hell when he prays, even in his condition.

Moses forfeited his birthright. He lived a life of a slave by choice, as opposed to a life of luxu-ry and privilege. God used him mightily to free His people from slavery in Egypt, when Moses was 80. Danjuma, a thirteen-year-old boy from Nigeria- I wrote of his testimony in a past news-letter. Due to a savage attack, he lost a limb, an eye and genitals. He was still able to forgive his attackers. (I need help in this area, as I’m not sure I have this level of love and forgiveness with those that persecute me). Danjuma’s testi-mony is still being written, but God has used him as HIS poster child for love and forgiveness.

My mother has a dear friend, we’ll call Jane. Her husband and his partner were Cincinnati police officers and were murdered in the line of duty in 1979. Through this difficult loss, not to mention the recent loss of a son in law, God has enabled Jane to minister in a local bereavement ministry to comfort dozens of people on a weekly basis, as they go through grief and loss of loved ones. She is full of compassion and agape love, and what has been burned out of her is judgment. She is Jesus to all, during their darkest hours on earth. I attended that funeral in 1979 by the way, and remember Jane standing at the casket with her then, three small children.

Finally, my mom. Mary Reiner has lost much of her freedom to come and go over the past 3 years due to dad’s failing health and dementia.

Even in her struggles, she continues to bless and love people, pray for all who have needs and is the most generous and selfless person on the planet. (Mom, Tracy and I think you are a saint of saints!)

Looking back over the past 20 years, Tra-cy and I have had our own share of losses. We have had Job losses, title losses, health issues and friend losses. Is God making a statement here? Paul got it. Do we? The loss-es that have been stripped from me and our family have always driven us to our knees. They have and continue to bring us closer to Jesus Christ-giving God the glory in all sea-sons. So whether like Paul, we have plenty or in a season of less or loss, He teaches us contentment. These testimonies and the peo-ple who God has placed in our lives inspire us to hang on to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. They inspire us to hold onto His divine-ly inspired Word like Romans 8:28, Philippi-ans 1:21 as we pursue Him and the spreading of His gospel and Love to all the broken and downtrodden around us.

I leave you with this, Philippians 3:7-8: “but whatever were gains to me I now consid-er loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the

surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ Jesus.” -Jerry and Tracy
