Month 2 of the Leadership Keweenaw program started with participants gathering over a quick breakfast meeting at the chamber office. Following breakfast, we carpooled over to the Great Lakes Research Center at Michigan Tech for a fun filled day of leadership exercises, presentations, and also to learn more about our area’s natural resources.

The first presentation of the day – Effective Presentation Skills! Cheryl Fahrner of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce took us through the materials as we learned the value of properly preparing and setting up a presentation so that all participants can get the most out of it. We reviewed several different types of formats and presentation styles so that one can tailor their material effectively for a given audience, subject, or venue. She also gave us some valuable tips on personal presence and how to keep your audience engaged while presenting or giving a speech.

Bill Rose discussing Geo-Tourism with the

participants of Leadership Keweenaw.

Our chamber is indebted to Cheryl for the work she has done for our community. From the formation of the Regional Chamber Alliance to the inception of the Leadership Keweenaw program, she has created opportunity for the members of our economy to grow and collaborate. We wish Cheryl the very best of luck in all her future endeavors. The chamber board of directors will take this opportunity to evaluate staffing needs before commencing a search for Cheryl’s replacement.

Brian Donnelly, Chamber Board of Director President.

September 28, 2016

Dear Board of Directors & Chamber Members,

It is with regret that I will be resigning as Executive Director of the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce effective

Friday, October 28, 2016. I will be returning to Stevens Point, due to some recent family issues that are pulling

me home. I assure all of you, the Chamber has strengthened relationships in the community and has helped

implement significant projects to strengthen the area. I am proud of the work that has been accomplished by

the Chamber since joining you in July 2014.

Some of the accomplishments include:

• Community Champion for ConnectMI Broadband for Houghton and Keweenaw Counties, receiving

Technology Action Plans with goals, project description, benefits and action items to take the area to the

next level.

• Collaboration with the Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau to create a joint “Welcome Card”. Jointly

winning the ConnectMI Community Project Award which featured the card and the KCVB Keweenaw

mobile app. Bringing national exposure for the Upper Peninsula and need for expanded Broadband

services in rural Michigan at the state conference. Michigan received 30 million each year for the next six

years to expand broadband services in rural Michigan.

• Establishing a Regional Chamber Alliance for the Western U.P. Chambers to share best practices and

building collaboration on moving the Western U.P. forward.

• Chamber information was upgraded to a new ChamberMaster database system. The company utilizes

best practices for Chambers and has created the necessary tools for Chambers to run as efficiently as

possible with their limited resources. We also created a new website and utilize the system to integrate

the two together which allows Chamber members to maximize their benefits with the Chamber website

exposure.

• Hosting the Connecting Entrepreneurial Communities Conference in October 2015 to bring entrepreneurial

resources to the Upper Peninsula with multi-state promotion and recognition for the Keweenaw.

• Area involvement on community committees to facilitate great ideas and opportunities for promoting the

Keweenaw.

• Establishing the Leadership Keweenaw program to develop future leaders for the area. Strengthening the

Chambers Foundation, the Portage Lake Enrichment Foundation.

I want to thank the Chamber members and Board of Directors for putting their faith and trust in me, as your

Executive Director for the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber acts as a collective business voice in

the area, as your local business resource and clearinghouse of business information for Houghton and

Keweenaw County businesses. It is with sincere gratitude and pleasure to have served all of you. Thank you!

And, as always – Wishing you all GREAT Business Success!

Sincerely,

Cheryl Fahrner

Executive Director

Next, Mary Jane Hatton of Finlandia University shared her experience and some basic tools for conducting productive meetings. We learned about “Roberts Rules of Order” and how to conduct meetings in a formal manner, including examples of how motions are managed. We reviewed some basic meeting structure tools and templates that are effective for meeting management such as, setting an agenda, tracking minutes, and organizing notes.

Following lunch, we were treated to three separate Natural Resource presentations.

Starting us off, Dr. Mark Rudnicki of the Michigan Tech School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science gave us some valuable insight into Michigan’s Forest Bio economy. He shared some examples of new developments in wood fiber innovations, mass timber building structures, and wood recycling developments. Next, Murray Gilles, Houghton County Mine Inspector, taught us about the different types of mines, both in our local area and throughout the region. He covered many facets of mining history, modern mining techniques, reclamation, and safety. Lastly, Professor Bill Rose of Michigan Tech’s Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Dept. led us on a ‘Geo-Tour’ of the Portage Canal aboard the Research Vessel Agassiz. During the tour, Bill was able to share with us some of our local area’s important geological formations, such as the Jacobsville Sandstone formation and the Keweenaw Fault. He explained how they came to be, and the significance of their presence. Thanks to all for the great information and thanks to Captain Stephen for taking us on the Agassiz!

We wrapped up the day with another presentation and exercises from Mary Jane Hatton on emotional intelligence. We learned that appropriate levels of emotional intelligence and “soft skills” are required to function, flourish, and ultimately be a leader within a society. We learned how to assess our own levels of emotional intelligence, or EQ and that while IQ is a measure of intelligence; EQ is more closely associated to overall success in life. Thanks to Cheryl and Mary Jane for their time, materials, and insight provided throughout the day.

All in all, it was a great day and we are all looking forward to next month’s meeting to learn more about Government and Community.

Somero Enterprises, Inc.

The Somero® Laser Screed® concrete screeding machine was developed in the mid 1980s based on patented

technology to provide a highly accurate, mechanical method of screeding concrete for slab-on-grade floors.

The introduction of the Somero® Laser Screed® machine coincided with increased demands for flatter and

more level industrial/warehouse floors. Some additional benefits of using Somero® Laser Screed® equipment

quickly became apparent to contractors and building owners; such as substantial labor savings, fast-track

production through wide placement methods, and stronger, higher quality floors.

Proud Community Supporter

Our roots run deep in the Keweenaw, going back to 1884, just five

years after Edison’s incandescent bulb put electricity at the fingertips

of people. That year, Peninsula Electric Light and Power Company

was organized in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Because Peninsula

Electric Light and Power was our original predecessor, you might say

UPPCO grew up with the electric utility industry. From the Edison

bulb to high-tech electronics, our company has been providing energy
