Pastor’sMessage

Here we are in October. I love October. My Dadand brother were born in October. The weather isusually good during the day and the nights are alittle chilly for good sleeping. Then, of course, thereis Halloween; it has become a very popular holidayin recent years—where children get dressed up andgo out and go house to house trying to get as muchcandy as they can. Then, they go to a party at ahouse of a friend or perhaps even the local church.Adults also dress up on this day and attend allkinds of parties, and play spooky tricks on theirfriends. The history behind Halloween starts with itbeing an ancient Celtic holiday known as “Sam-hain.” Samhain was the beginning of a new spiri-tual year and the idea was to obtain good fortunein the upcoming year. On October 31 the veilbetween the earthly world and the spiritual worldwas said to be at its thinnest. Ghosts were said tocome back to where they lived to find an earthlybody to inhabit. In the 8th Century the CatholicChurch decided to take this holiday into theirMass. But, instead of October 31, they chooseNovember 1 to honor their dead. They called thisday “Allhallowmas”, or Mass of the Hallowed. Theevening before then became All Hallows eve. AllSaints day has become part of the Christian land-scape ever since. We will have our All Saints service on Novem-ber 6 for members and loved ones who have passedaway in the past year. So, for the month of OctoberI would like all of you to remember the specialpeople in your life who have affected your faith ina positive way and have gone on to heaven. Secondthought, even think of people who are still living, who have affected your faith and life in a positiveway. God bless you all and have a great October.

The Dollar Fund

As for the money maker, “The Dollar Fund”—for the first six months of this year we havecollected $432, compared to $518 in 2015, and$632 in 2014. So we have 4 months to catch up alittle. It would be nice if we could get $700. Thatwould mean about $70 a month.

We also have a wooden cross outside on thechurch now and a light that shows up the cross inthe evening. The money to pay for it came fromthe Memorial Fund. I have heard some people ask, “Why so manyfundraisers?” Well, if we don’t have fundraisers, our church would not survive. If any one has anyideas on fundraisers, let the council know.
