SPOTLIGHT08

Trivia’s enough of a treat in itself, but when you’re winding down and giving back? Bonus! Enter the Junior Welfare Association’s (JWA) eight annual fundraiser, Trivia or Treat, set for Saturday, October 25.

This year JWA offers the opportunity to treat thousands of area families who might not otherwise have a Thanksgiving dinner – proceeds from Trivia or Treat benefit the Judy Mason Thanksgiving Basket Project, which last year provided 4,000 food baskets to families in Macon County who need them most.

The event’s a great example of what JWA is all about, says Trivia or Treat Chair Jenny Beals: “We’re having a good time, but we’re also doing a lot of good things for the community.”

It’s motivation to keep it interesting, and JWA always has a few tricks up their sleeve on Trivia or Treat night. Master of Ceremonies Paula Thornton of WAND-TV hosts 10 rounds of trivia covering topics ranging from sports and entertainment to local facts, haunted Decatur and reality TV. Contestants compete in teams of four or eight, and individuals can also register and be placed on teams.

A silent auction and 50/50 keep things moving, as do giveaways, costume contests for groups and individuals and a cash prize for first place in the trivia competition. Beer, wine, soda, water and Papa Murphy’s pizza are sold, with a portion of the proceeds going back to JWA for their signature programs.

“We’re a service organization, and we’re focused on doing good things for the community through things like our grant programs and our signature programs, which provide shoes and athletic clothes for kids,” Jenny explains.

Last year nearly 25 teams participated; this year the goal is 30. “If every member signs up a team, that alone will get us there,” says Jenny. To help further the cause, the group is selling Nelson’s chicken dinners, available October 9 – and each dinner includes a coupon for $10 off trivia registration.

No tricks here – only treats for the community and trivia lovers!

ART SPEAK10 by Jerry Johnson

Jerry Johnson is the Executive Director of the Decatur Area Arts Council and may be spotted pretty much anywhere art is happening.

Monty Python’s Spamalot is coming to Decatur in October...or should I say it is being created for Decatur by some of the area’s most talented artists. Because Spamalot is a major musical (acting, singing and dancing), it requires A LOT of talented people to bring it to the stage, and talented people are always in demand and always busy. That makes partnerships and collaboration between local organizations and artists even more important in a city the size of Decatur.

Musical theatre is particularly challenging because it includes artists from virtually every one of the arts. A musical play is a combined piece of literature, poetry and music created by writers and composers that’s ultimately intended to be performed. That’s where our local artists take over:

• Set designers combine architecture and sculpture to create the set and props.

• Visual artists paint sets and backdrops and sometimes create projected images.

• Costumers design and craft the costumes.

• Musicians play the score/accompaniment.

• Choreographers add movement to the words and music.

• Lighting and sound designers enhance the show and the audience’s experience.

• Directors and actors combine all these elements and perform the show.

For Spamalot, these creative people were drawn from several of Decatur’s most established community organizations. The show is a cooperative production of Theatre 7, Decatur’s community theatre, and the Theatre Department at Richland Community College.

These two organizations complement one another well with the resources that they bring to the project. Theatre at Richland Community College brings the expertise of college theatre professor

Michelle Stephens and the talents of eager students. Because the show will be performed in Richland’s Shilling Auditorium, early access to the performance space for rehearsals and technical work is a big advantage. Having support from the college’s administration, marketing and technical personnel is also a major plus.

Theatre 7 brings its share of resources to the show as well. Veteran performers like Doug Bishop and Jayson Albright provide leadership for those with less stage experience. Many of the production personnel are Theatre 7 members with years of experience, such as costumer Dina Fryman and set designer Jerry Johnson. Theatre 7’s downtown facility also offers a central location for rehearsals, set construction and an impressive costume shop.

Other significant artistic partners on Spamalot are the Decatur Park District (DPD) and the Decatur Municipal Band. The show’s choreographer, Marie Jagger-Taylor, is the DPD Cultural Arts Manager with many years as a professional actress/dancer/choreographer/director. The lighting designer is DPD Cultural Arts Supervisor Jennifer Theis.

The show’s Musical Director, Jim Culbertson, has led the Decatur Municipal Band for more than 35 years and has recruited many of its members to play in the pit orchestra.

A strong team of creative, imaginative artists make shows like Spamalot happen. This collaborative process is what I love most about theatre. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to work shoulder to shoulder with some of Decatur’s most creative, passionate people. Bringing all this talent and experience together for Spamalot has been a lot of work (and fun) and will definitely be worth the energy when these “partners in art” bring it to the stage.

GET THERE: You can see Spamalot October 17-19 and 24-27. For more details and tickets, visit theatre7.net/home/order-tickets.

$65 Art in Central ParkBy Ceramic Artist Shirley Kramer

Just a little something we ran across and wanted to share.

I discovered this whimsical little teapot at Arts in Central Park this year. Ceramic artist Shirley Kramer doesn't often show in local galleries, so making the rounds at this great art event put on by the Decatur Area Arts Council really paid off. Shirley teaches ceramics at Richland Community College and can sometimes be spotted on Richland's campus at the Farmer's Market or the Art Bazaar.

TapRoot Time!

12 | October 2014

by T. F. DUDE

The Food Dude is not a professional food critic. He just really, really likes food. And occasionally squeals over thick-cut bacon.

THE FOOD DUDE12

Downtown lunch competition has grown a little stiffer! TapRoot on Merchant is open for lunch 11 am-2 pm every weekday, and we paid them a visit to see if their delicious dinner translated well into luscious lunch. We were greeted by the same neighborly staff and were served in the same rustic, cozy dining area. The tables were set to the nines, and patrons of every flavor joined us in our midday experience.

TapRoot is known for contemporary comfort food. Somehow they’ve managed to find a warp zone and produce the same Grandma-fixed-it-and-I-licked-my-plate-clean goodness with speed and accuracy. That’s right, same deliciousness in your belly and back at the office, energized to take on the seventh inning stretch…or if you ordered heavy, nap on your keyboard.

Sandwiches, soups, salads and unique add-ons line the lunch menu. TapRoot even caters to the mini-mes with a diverse kids’ menu including choice minor staples like mac-n-cheese, pita pizza, chicken strips and corn dogs. During our lunchtime, we happened to be kid-free, so we elected a beef and poultry option to give us a good sampling and partnered them with TapRoot’s signature fries and quinoa salad.

The namesake TapRoot burger is a 70/30 custom blend of beef, blanketed in thick-cut smoked bacon and dressed to your liking.

We topped ours with cheddar and dragged it through the garden. Do some mouth stretches before you leave the office, though, because this burger is a doozey! The taste is just as big as the size: fresh, juicy and savory. And when we say “thick-cut bacon,” we truly mean false teeth need not apply. This bun-sized slab of pork is crisp and tender at the same time, packed with flavor that doesn’t just make pigs squeal. The salt and pepper fries that are partnered with this monster burger are anything but ordinary. They’re straight-cut potatoes with an array of dipping sauce choices. Who needs ketchup when you have dynamic choices like roasted garlic aioli, white cheese, rooster mayo and buffalo bbq? Ours landed in the bbq, which partnered well with the slabs of bacon on our burger. This plate was not for the faint at heart, but if you’re hungry — this is your solution.

Lunchers who prefer a lighter option should check out the chicken gyro. This white meat option is wrapped in a warm, soft pita loaded with fresh tomato and cucumber salsa and drenched in an original tzatziki sauce. The flavor is refreshing, making any garden-getter hungry to duplicate the recipe. TapRoot’s quinoa salad, full of texture, prime veggies and unique flavor, rounds out this healthy choice perfectly. For anyone who counts calories, this option is an almost-guiltless pleasure.

Sounds fantastic right? The good news is that all of this rang up the register at under $20! While the clean, rustic-contemporary scene and taste-bud spoiling bites may make you feel like a million bucks, you’ll walk out knowing you got a great deal. Want to spoil a colleague or impress a client? Lunch-it-up at the top of the stairs (or elevator) at Merchant Street’s fresh take on American cuisine.

Ready to get your spook on? An extra 5,300 square feet of fright await you at The Scream Haunted Adventure. This year’s Zombie Adventure tacks on even more terror with a Bates Motel replica, monster museum and sewer, on top of its quintessential spine-tingling tours.

“We’ve revamped 75% of the house,” says Event Manager Nick Kriener. “More detail, more fun, more things people will remember. The clown room in particular we’re hoping will be one of the most memorable.”

Without giving too wide a peek into the coffin, Nick promises this year’s Scream will take terror to a new level, with new attention to detail, more actors and more ghostly goings-on. It’s all courtesy of Decatur Celebration and The Creatures of the Night, whose members have honed their talents studying Halloween events across the Midwest.

They practice their craft in not one but two eerie locations: The Scream Haunted House and The Scream Haunted Warehouse that strive to scare the bejeezus out of over 6,000 attendees. The Haunted House promises 13,800 square feet of fright including 30 horrifying scenes, double vortex tunnels, a grave crawl and a squeeze wall, all built inside an empty warehouse inhabited by zombies, beasts, monsters and roaming sinister characters. Meanwhile over at the Haunted Warehouse Tour, small groups of explorers take a Ghost Adventures-style flashlight tour of the reportedly haunted old Mueller warehouse, visiting the creepy remains of a once buzzing cafeteria, kitchen and locker room.

It’s easy to see why The Scream has been voted a Top 10 Best Haunted Event by the HauntedIllinois.com. Want to truly test your mettle? Hit the über-popular Glow Light

Haunted House Tacks on More Terror for 2014

Page 15: October 2014 Thrive Entertainment Guide

Night, when you tour Haunted House with just a glow stick to get you through your super-freaky adventure.

Options for your ticket to terror abound and also allow you to roll in multiple experiences. Choose from general admission ($10), the Speed Pass that lets you skip to the front of the line ($14), the Haunted Warehouse Tour ($12), the Fright Pass that gets you The Scream Haunted House and Terror on Washington in Clinton ($17) or the Murder on Mercer Pass that gets you The Scream Haunted House and The Scream Haunted Warehouse Tour ($20, billed as the best value).

Editor’s note: They’re always looking for victims, er, volunteers (actors, set designers, makeup artists, costume designers and more), to help run the joint, so if you’re interested in a behind-the-scenes experience, give them a scream.

Good news, Decatur! We now have a brand new way to burn calories with family and friends, meet new people and have an hour or so of fun…all while learning a new sport. This fascinating new activity merges soccer and golf into one. It’s called FootGolf, and it’s become quite the hit in our area.

Many of you have probably never heard of the term “FootGolf” before, but while it’s brand new to our area, it isn’t new to our country and other parts of the world. The exact origins of FootGolf are unclear, but it is known that the

first 9-hole FootGolf tournament, played as it is played today, took place in the Netherlands in 2009. It was introduced to the United States by the American FootGolf League, AFGL, in 2010. It’s a serious and recognized sport, complete with a World Cup that took place among eight countries, including the United States, in Budapest, Hungary, in 2012.

Colin Bonner, Midstate Soccer Coaching Director, teamed up with the Decatur Park District to kick off FootGolf here in our community. Colin’s enthusiasm is evident, and he hopes this activity thrives here. He said, “The only areas near us that offer FootGolf are Peoria and Chicago.” We can participate in all of this excitement and become FootGolf athletes, right here in Decatur, Illinois!

Are you ready to play? You can leave your golf clubs at home, but grab your soccer ball and head to the golf course. FootGolf is currently offered at Hickory Point Golf Course. The course you’ll play on has nine par 3 holes and varies in distance from 28-60 yards. Score is kept similarly to golf as players kick soccer

balls down the fairway. The goal is to kick the soccer ball toward the checkered flag and into a cup in as few shots as possible. This sport can be played by teams or as individual competitors. Do you want to hear the best part? It’s completely free! Bring your own soccer ball, or rent one with a $3 deposit. When you return the ball, you get your money back. Score cards are available on site.

Colin has received positive feedback about the sport and the course. He says a family of four can complete a game in about 45 minutes, which is similar to a round of mini golf, and anyone can play this game. The rules are easy to follow, and it’s something families can participate in together and anyone can win. Although FootGolf in Decatur is still in its infancy, Colin hopes that it will really catch on here and expansion will be necessary. If that’s the case, he has a plan. “In the future, maybe we’ll have an 18-hole course.” He’s also considering having a FootGolf tournament in the spring.

the ruleSLet’s cover a few basic rules. Clearly mark your ball before play so that there’s no confusion as to which ball belongs to you. The ball is to be played in a single movement, which means your foot must be clearly behind the ball before your first kick. Once the ball has come to a complete halt, then play can begin.

Balls can be kicked up to 2 meters behind the round markers, and the player farthest from the hole is the first kicker after the kickoff. The only time a ball can be lifted and a spot marked is if it’s blocking a competitor’s kick. If your ball happens to land in water, it may be retrieved; however, you’ll receive a penalty stroke. Lastly, a ball can only be picked up for cleaning or replacement when it’s on the green.

Now you’re ready to play ball. You’ll get a kick out of this new-to-Decatur sport, and be glad you gave it a shot!
