COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Once again the Counseling Department is here to support the personal, academic, spiritual, college and career de-velopment of each student. During the month of October, we will be coordinating three very important events to help accomplish our goals:

Wednesday, October 15th is standardized test day for our freshmen, sophomore and junior classes.

Freshmen will take the ReadiStep, which measures the skills students need to be on track for success in college and careers. It is the first step on the College Board’s College Readiness Pathway, an integrated series of assessments that will include the PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT in the future.

Sophomores and Juniors will be taking the PSAT with writing in preparation for the SAT. The juniors will also be participating in the National Merit

Scholarship Program.

Counselors will be speaking to the students in early October to prepare them for Testing Day. At that time, students will receive a practice test and their testing room assignments. The English and Math Departments will also spend some time in class helping to prepare students for the tests.

On Testing Day, ->All freshmen, sophomores and juniors will report directly to their assigned testing room at the regular time. ->Students must be on time; in accordance with test-ing guidelines, students who arrive after the 1st Period bell will not be permitted to test.

->Room assignments will be posted throughout the school and on the counseling page of the BMHS website in the week leading up to the exam. ->Students must be in full uniform with two sharpened #2 pencils and their calculators. ->Students should be well rested and have eaten a nutritious breakfast. ->Testing will end at approximately 11:30a.m. and stu-dents should arrange to be picked up immediately after school. If you have any questions please call the Counseling Center.

Tuesday, October 7th at 6:00pm is the Sophomore Parent meeting. Please join us in the Fine Arts Theatre for an introduction to your student’s new counselor, Ms. Dannel Wilson, who will talk about the PSAT test-ing, college planning with Naviance and the specific chal-lenges facing your sophomore student.

Tuesday, October 14th at 6:00pm is the Freshman Parent meeting. Please join us in the Fine Arts Theatre for a meeting with Ms. Erica Di Clemente, our

freshman counselor. Ms. Di Clemente will discuss the transition from middle school to high school,

the ReadiStep standardized testing and college planning with Naviance. We hope as many of you as possible will attend.

Please check the Counseling Center page on the BMHS website for

student enrichment opportunities, college and career fairs and workshops.

Delivery of Messages to Students In order to prevent disruptions to classes, no MESSAGES will be delivered to students except in extreme emergency.

Attendance Office Notes 301-735-8401 x149

Correct procedure for absent or early dismissal stu-dents: Contact Attendance. Attendance will notify all teachers concerned. This is a system that has worked for many years, please follow.

Early Dismissal—if your child needs to leave early for an appointment, please call beforehand or send in a note in the morning. Early dismissals without advance notice are very disruptive to the classroom routine.

Absences—please contact the Attendance office to report absences by 10am. Students should bring a note to the At-tendance Office when they return from an absence. Students will be allowed to make up any missed work upon their re-turn from an Excused Absence. Travel and vacations are not excused absences!

Tardies/Absences—All students arriving to school at or after 8:00 must sign in at the Attendance Office. Each tardy and/or absence your student incurs appears on their college transcript.

Sick Students If your student is sick (fever and/or vomit-ing) in the morning, please do not send them to school. They can make up all their work upon their return. Students who become sick during the day will call a parent/guardian from the Attendance Office to be picked up.

HOLY CROSS SERVICE PROGRAM

Service Agreement & Action Plan: All students must complete and submit the Service Agreement & Action Plan. Without this, student service hours will not be recorded. The document is being distributed in Theology classes and is available through the Holy Cross Service class in Maccess. Once this form is completed, it should be turned in to Campus Ministry.

Updated Contract Format: The Christian Service Contract has been modified. Please make sure students are using the most updated version, which is available for download through the school’s website.

Summer Service Hours: Students who did any 2014-2015 Holy Cross Service hours during the summer must submit their completed Christian Service Contracts by October 6th to the Campus Ministry office.

Service Reflection Papers: Every student is required to complete a reflection paper about his/her service experience, each school year. The assignment instructions are available through the Holy Cross Service course in Maccess. The completed paper is due by April 27, 2015. To submit the assignment, students will upload their typed paper into the DropBox on Maccess.

Service Sites: Pre-Approved Lists: Each grade level has its own list of pre-approved service sites, which provides a good starting-point in finding a place to volunteer. Students may choose to volunteer with any of these pre-approved sites (for their grade level). Lists can be accessed through the school’s website through the Faith & Service section. Approval of Sites not on Pre-Approved Service Site List: If a student wishes to volunteer with an organization that is not on their pre-approved list, they can submit it for review via the Approval Request Form. This on-line form is accessible through the school’s website in the Faith & Service section. Campus Ministry reserves the right to reject the hours for credit if the request is not completed in advance. Requests for approval cannot be submitted through email.

From our Athletic Director, Tony Johnson

Welcome to the 2014 Fall season. This year br ings about the hope of new beginnings. Each of our fall ath-letic teams have prepared with great vigor for what hopes to be a promising athletic season. While victories on the field remain the primary goal of our school com-munity, we also recognize there are victories that come off the field that excite us as well. What you do in the stands sets the tone for how our community is repre-sented. Let us together strive to celebrate our victories with humility and deal with our defeats with dignity. Good sportsmanship from our players, parents, stu-dents and fans is a necessary ingredient for success with integrity to be achieved. You can help us create a “competitive exhibition of skills in a Christian educa-tional setting” by being supportive of our players and coaches. The athletic fields are an extension of our classrooms and our coaches are an extension of our faculty. We come together with you to provide our stu-dents-athletes with the support that they will need for a successful season. We look forward to an exciting sea-son of play and a year that we can all enjoy. Good luck and GO MUSTANGS!
