The Church can represent a variety of organizations Protestant,
Catholic, denominational, nondenominational. Whats meant is that
people we trusted as representatives of Christ betrayed us in some
way.
Almost every churchgoing Christian has been treated badly
by people in their church at various times in their lives. Churchgo-ers are first and foremost human beings. And human beings do stu-
pid and hurtful things. Hence, the need to be in church, confessing
sin and seeking forgiveness.
When a person is hurt by clergy or a Diocesan group, the
blow is even more severe and difficult to recover from. We expect
our ordained leadership and our Church institution to represent
Christ if not perfectly, at least faithfully. And when we perceive
that this is not the case, its painful and disturbing.
Both recently and over the years, St. Francis has discerned
among our members a call to ordained ministry. We, as a congrega-
tion, have said yes. And weve been distressed, angry, and hurt
when the Diocese has said no. Why is there a disconnect? What
is being done about it?
Bishop Smith has convened a group to look at the entire
process of discerning a call to ordained ministry. The group com-
prises members from the Commission on Ministry, including our
parishioner Michael Booker; the Board of Examining Chaplains;and the Board of the Episcopal School for Ministry. When

Ive been hurt by the Church.
Weve all heard people express this senti-
ment. Perhaps weve said it ourselves.
Different words may have been used. And

Test Drive Sunday Update
On Sep 8, St. Francis held Test Drive Sunday, where we in-
vited folks to come kick the tires and take us for a spin. We had 18 visi-
tors that day. And we had 4 visitors the following Sunday. Eight of our
Test Drive Sunday visitors have joined St. Francis Church. Kudos to all who worked so hard
to make this happen. Vroom, vroom!
Our Music Director Paul Ullrich
October 6 is Paul Ullrichs first Sunday as St. Francis Music Director. Paul lives in Ditt-
mer. He has extensive experience as an organist and choir director. Most recently he played for
the Christian Science Church in Godfrey, IL. Paul sang tenor with the St. Louis Symphony Cho-
rus for 4 years. Hes sung and played for United Methodist, United Church of Christ, RomanCatholic, and Episcopal Churches. We welcome Paul!
November Book Group
The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny
Readers: For a really great time with your friends from church, just do two things: Read The
Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny; mark your calendar for6:30 p.m., Thursday, November 14st
at the Parish House. Youre set!
This will be the first book in the mystery genre that St. Francis book lovers have read to-
gether. The mystery in the title refers not to the unfortunate murder of a monk that could only
have been committed by another monk. It refers to the beautiful mystery of near-perfect Gregor-
ian Chant, performed as worship by the monks of an isolated monastery in rural Quebec. Yes, one
of the holy men, devoted to worship of God, is a murderer. But which one? How will we know?
If this story seems familiar, it might be because it was used in a sermon at St. Francis,
preached by the Rev. Dr. Warren Crews this past summer. The book is fascinat-
ing, fast paced, and full of intrigue, even set in this quiet, isolated, peaceful abbey.
The book is full of wonderful characters, moral issues, and looks at good and evil.
Well have a great conversation.
Easy copies at Amazon.com, (hardback, paperback, audio and Kindle) aswell as at St. Louis County Library. All are welcome. Give yourself a treat: read, enjoy, talk.

What do we like about being human?
It doesnt matter if were Black

Consecration Sunday Is Coming
Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not viewthe money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congrega-tions see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship withGod by supporting their churchs mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes.
Our congregations finance committee has selected theNewConsecration Sunday Steward-ship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stew-
ardship education emphasis this year.
New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver togive for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. In-stead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat peoplelike followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship.NewConse-cration Sunday encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the
question, What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?
During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our attendees and mem-bers to make their financial commitments to our churchs missionary, benevolent, and educational
ministries in this community and around the world.
Every attendee and member who completes anEstimate of Giving Carddoes so voluntarilyby attending morning worship on Consecration Sunday. We urge people to attend who feelstrongly opposed to completing a card. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels per-
sonal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card.
We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worshipour guest leader will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members
making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.
We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the ConsecrationSunday team and Bishops Committee members. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask
people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone
to attend Consecration Sunday worship.
Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events.
Senior Warden,
Sue Schmidt

July and August financials are now available.
We are currently down in terms of pledge income. The plan is to prepare quarterly statements
for September so everyone can see how close they are to being on track for meeting their pledge.

Jerusalem next year.

The Food Pantry is serving
more and more families each week
and are in desperate need of toilet-
ries (tooth paste, tooth brushes, tis-

Food stamps do not cover anything
that is not edible, thus the need for
these items.
As far as actual food, Cheer-

very popular and always needed.

Consider This:A Time for Every Season
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under
heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up
what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time
to build up; ... Ecclesiastes 3
Now is the time for us to harvest the last of our tomatoes. Now is the time to
share them among ourselves and with the clients of the Eureka food pantry. Now is
the time for our gardens to lie fallow, restoring energy, preparing to grow food for us
in the spring. Now is the time to give thanks to God for the bounty of this season,
for good healthy food that we can share with our neighbors.
Perhaps now is also the time to turn our food-growing attentions to those
whose hunger is never-ending, the families whose perpetual hunger is a sort of col-
lateral damage in the wars of poverty, of politics, of oppression.
In adult forum during the next two weeks hunger and social justice will be the
topic of our learning and of our conversation. October 6th, Pastor Sally will lead us
through a viewing of the film A Place at the Table, which focuses on hunger in
America. October 13th, Steve Strathearn and I will lead our fourth annual lunch dis-
cussion around Oxfams World Hunger Day.
Perhaps what well be doing on those two days is planting seeds of under-
standing that will grow into actions in our community and in the world, actions that
will help to end the endless battle against hunger. Perhaps well find those seeds
have already been planted and need only a booster of compassion to grow into ac-
tions of real social justice.
Knowing that God wants us to care for all of Gods creation, care especially
for those in need, this season could be for us a flowering of the time for every pur-
pose under heaven.

A Bit of Humor
A tiger was walking through the jungle one day and saw two men relaxing under a tree.
One was reading a newspaper, and the other was working feverishly on a manual typewriter.
The tiger leapt on the man with the newspaper, and ate him up. The tiger did not bother
the other man at all. Thats because any predator knows that readers digest but writers cramp.
