President’s Updateby Steve Williamson - Club President

Hello everyone! I guess you know the time of year right? College football and our fall event season is here! Checking our upcoming sched-ule, we should have something for everyone. From social events like Octoberfest, Brumos Museum Tour, monthly membership meeting and dinner, and the Panamera Launch Party, to driving events like our Daytona PCA Club Race and DE, Citrus Region DE, and a resumption of our autocross series, we’ve got a busy calen-dar. Through our website http://flc.pca.org, our Facebook page,Porsche Club of America Citrus Region, emails, and the calendar in the Spiel, we try to keep everyone informed.

This time of year also opens doors of opportuni-ty to those who wish to enjoy the PCA Citrus Re-gion experience on an even higher level. All of the events above are conducted only with the direction and leadership of many talented and selfless volunteers. Without their efforts, none of this would be possible. I have thoroughly en-joyed working with each and every one of them over the past four years that I have served on the Citrus Region Board. First as Secretary, and now for the last three years as President. It has been great fun and has opened doors of op-portunity that would have never been available to me had I not volunteered. I want to thank everyone who has chaired or has otherwise participated in organizing events. The experi-ence for me has been, at times challenging, but always rewarding and I have enjoyed it all. For you,now is the time to consider being more than just a participant in Citrus Region and to begin thinking about the possibility of chair-ing an event or becoming a Board member. We have vacancies in several areas that will need to be filled for next year. If you have any interest, please contact me or any other current Board member and we will be happy to discuss the possibilities with you.

You may have noticed that the Spiel has a se-lect few advertisements strategically placed as to not interfere with your reading pleasure. We do not want to become a publication of ad-vertisements, so we have chosen a select few businesses of only the highest level of quality and reliability to be allowed to advertise in our Region’s Spiel. If you have a chance to patron-ize any of these organizations who support our Region with their advertising dollars, I am cer-tain they would appreciate the business. And please mention you saw their ad in the Spiel.

If you have a business that you think would benefit from some additional exposure in our demographic, we would be willing to consider you as one of our elite advertisers. Please con-tact our Advertising Manager and Secretary Lyn Perez or myself for details.

We are interested in what you have to say. If you can write (or even if you can’t look at me for example!) you can be published. Write an ar-ticle, preferably Porsche related, or if you have photos from an event, our national award win-ning Spiel Editor, Travis Young, would be the one to contact. It seems we always have room for more than content than what we have.

Anyway, enough from me this month.....GO Ga-tors! :-)

Enjoy you Porsche!Steve WilliamsonPresident - Florida Citrus Region

From the Editor A special thanks to our former President, Chuck Hennings, for his recap on the Pebble Beach Concours this summer. Its a great read and could serve as a pre-guide for next year’s Porsche Parade in Monterrey.

As always, we welcome and need articles and photos from our member of Porsche or car relat-ed events that you attend. It is those articles that make the Spiel so great!

Among our many events this fall, be sure to start planning for our 2nd annual Octoberfest Cookoff which will be held Saturday October 26 at Porsche of Orlando. Bring your best October or German themed dishes - similar in format to the Chili Coo-koff. Be sure to check your In Box for more details.

Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance 2013

By Chuck HenningsDon’t wait until a trip to the Pebble Beach Concours is on your ‘bucket list’ like I did. Start saving frequent fly-er miles now and book it at least 6 months in advance including lodging and rental car. And it’s really a full week of related auto events leading up to the Sunday Concours on the 18th hole of the Pebble Beach golf course. The beauty of the Monterey Peninsula, mega car events and meeting many interesting people in-cluding celebrities makes this event so special. We flew into the San Jose International Airport rather than San Francisco which saves you an hour or so to the Monterey area. Of course, if you have your own plane or use Net Jets you can fly into the Monterey airport! The ride from San Jose takes about an hour and a half depending on traffic of course.

The pictures speak for themselves re the area and events but here’s a synopsis of the week:

Monterey Area – Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach and Carmel/Carmel Valley each provide won-derful sights, wineries, eateries, galleries and shop-ping.

Carmel Auto Show – first event of the week. We ar-rived in CA that day and didn’t get to attend. But a few days later, many of the judged cars and others partici-

pate in a Tour of the Monterey Peninsula concluding in Carmel. With great fanfare and large crowds, they enter Carmel and park along Ocean Avenue for spec-tator viewing before returning to Pebble Beach.Auctions – there’s the Russo and Steel, RM, Mecum and Gooding and Co. auctions. Russo and Steel worked the lower end of the range of cars while the others handled the pricier ones. If you’ve ever watched ‘Chasing Classic Cars’ with Wayne Carini on TV, he’s taken many of his cars to these events and they’re great theater. A Bugatti went for $8 million at the Gooding auction we attended but I heard a Ferrai went for $27 million at another auction. The bidding at Gooding was spirited and most cars went for more than the advertised range. Only a few did not meet the reserve.

Car Memorabilia/Art - posters, car art/art objects, clothing, jewelry, abounded at several venues at Peb-ble Beach.

Car Shows – the first show we were able to attend was the McCall’s Motorworks Revival at the Monterey airport. We didn’t know that the event was akin to the Festival of Speed, common in Florida but cost-ing a significant sum. However, being a “bucket list” trip I pulled out the plastic, took my glass of cham-

pagne off the server’s tray and walked in. After the tour of the Gulfstream G5, nice wine and power hors d’oeuvres we became OK with the entry fee. The Legends of the Autobahn in Carmel Valley featured Porsche, Mercedes and BMW. All the National PCA Of-ficers were there as well as Porsche racing great Vic Elford. The Quail, also in Carmel Valley, was sold out way in advance and not knowing that, we couldn’t get into what appeared to be an Amelia Island type of event. We heard tickets were around $500 per per-son. Concluding our week of shows leading up to The Concours, we attended the Concorso Italiano, where the largest number of Ferraris, Alfas and Lamborghi-nis I’ve ever seen were assembled. A nice couple from Oakland, whom we met at our B&B, won a trophy for their Ferrari Dino.

Racing – Laguna Seca had 2 days of vintage racing events and a few were only running at 30-40mph due to their age (see photos). We camped out at the fa-mous ‘Corkscrew” turn to watch the cars navigate this treacherous turn and dive. Jay Leno was in the pad-dock working on an old truck being shown there. The Concours d’Elegance – the jewel of the week was the Concours where impeccably prepared cars from

all over the world are parked on the 18th hole at Peb-ble, one of the most divinely prepared pieces of real estate I’ve ever laid eyes on. Proud owners stand be-fore their works of art or sleek racing machines await-ing judges and chatting with the crowd.

Honorary judges included Sirs Jackie Stewart and Stir-ling Moss and celebrities Jay Leno, Edward Herman, Barry Meguiar and Wayne Carini also participated. A few folks in period attire added to the atmosphere. Many awards were given but the best of show went to a 1934 Packard. The Porsche 901 prototype also won a special award in this 50th year of the 911.
