ANCHORAGE FIRE BOARD APPOINTS NEW CHIEFIn September, Fire Chief Walter Lage announced his retirement after serving the Anchorage Fire Protection District for the past nine years.

Following candidate interviews, the Anchorage Fire Board promoted Bill Rockwood to fill the vacancy. The public announcement and change of command took place last Tuesday evening at AnchorFest, allowing Anchorage residents a chance to thank Fire Chief Lage for his years of dedicated service to the community, and to congratulate Fire Chief Rockwood on his appointment.

Rockwood is a proven leader with 38 years in the Jefferson County Fire Service. He began his firefighting career in 1975 as a Firefighter with the Harrods Creek Fire Protection District. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1980, Station Captain in 1985, and Assistant Fire Chief in 1993. Rockwood joined the Anchorage Fire Protection District as a Shift Captain in 1998 and

has served as Captain for 15 years. He has been on the Fire District Board of Directors, and is an Anchorage resident.

FORESTY BOARD FALL CANOPY CAMPAIGNThe Forestry Board thanks those residents participating in the Fall Canopy Campaign. Everyone who ordered trees will receive their flags – listing the type of trees ordered –around November 5th. If no one is at home, the flags will be left in the newspaper tube or by the front door. Place the flags in the locations where you want the trees planted. Tree locations must be marked before the Board contacts “Before You Dig” to locate utilities. Once in place, please make sure the flags are not removed by service personnel. No flags, no trees!

Trees will be planted before Thanksgiving. If you will not be home between November 5th and Thanksgiving day, please call Diane McAllister at 244-8139.

2014 Forestry Calendars

All Anchorage households receive one free forestry calendar. Again this year, the Forestry Board plans to deliver calendars before Thanksgiving. If you will be out of townbetween November 11th and Thanksgiving day, please call City Hall at 245-4654 and your calendar will be held for you to pick-up when you return.

After December 1st a limited number of calendars will be available for purchase at City Hall for $6. These beautiful Anchorage calendars make wonderful holiday gifts for family and friends.

Ridge Road Walking Path Mayor Hewitt and the Anchorage City Council extend their sincere thanks to the 14 property owners along Ridge Road that granted easements to the City in order to complete this project. The walking path was moved further away from the road’s edge, and the width increased to make the route safer for families and children walking to Anchorage school.

High School OptionsThe Anchorage Board of Education and the OldhamCounty Board of Education have entered into an agreement that allows Anchorage high school-age students to attend anOldham County high school. At this time, this is an open-ended agreement that provides a wonderful benefit to residents who pay school taxes to the Anchorage School District. For more information, contact the Anchorage Board of Education at 245-8927.

FALL YARD SALESaturday, October 26th

Wednesday October 23rd is the final day to register! Please call City Hall at 245-4654 or Diane McAllister at 244-8139 to be added to the list of participants. Residents are asked to contribute $5 to cover the cost of the 3-day ad in The Courier-Journal. AN IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE From Anchorage Police Chief WindersBreak-InsBurglary involves someone unlawfully entering a building or residence and committing a crime. Burglars often commit these crimes to support an illegal drug habit, so their motivation may be more than monetary gain. If burglars need to make money to support a drug habit (possibly as high as $100 to $150 per day), they are going to find someone to victimize.

Burglars choose their target the same way as other criminals do; they look for the easiest target. Most burglaries occur when people are away from

their home, often during the day or working hours. The physical security of your home, therefore, is essential when trying to avoid becoming a victim of a property crime. As a potential victim there are a few things you can do to make your home as difficult a target for a thief as you can.

Alarm SystemsA burglar alarm is the number one defense against intrusion into your home. No alarm system will make your home 100% safe from an intruder but a good system can deter and/or detect most non-professional burglars and give you some peace of mind. Also, the signs that you place on your windows, doors and in your yard can do as much to deter a burglary as the alarm itself. Many burglars have stated that they will bypass any house that has alarm signs posted and will go to the next easiest target.

If your choose to install a burglar alarm, here are some things to consider: who is notified of an alarm and in what order are they notified, do you want silent or audible alarms, and

what time delays are you utilizing on your alarmed areas. In Anchorage we recommend: an audible alarm set to call the Anchorage Police Department first, and time delays set to instantaneous on all alarm areas possible.

Alarm notifications are usually made via phone, cable, cellular or radio systems. Ask your alarm company about any backup notification should your primary source of notification become inoperable. Your alarm must be registered with the Anchorage Police Department where a record of your emergency contact numbers and any specific information about your alarm system, such as specific alarm codes and how they correlate to home, are kept.

Most alarm systems use call centers to receive notification of alarms and to call alarm owners and/or police. This can lead to delays in response if alarm call centers call anyone other than the police department first. Some people prefer to be notified first before a call to the local police department is made so that they can ensure that the alarm has not been set off accidentally before police are

dispatched. That is a personal preference, but we suggest your alarm company call the Anchorage Police Department first. There are also some alarm notifications that come directly into the police station without going through a call center and print out for our dispatchers to dispatch immediately. You may check with your alarm service to see if this is available through them.

An alarm system can be a valuable investment for you and your family and help protect your home. Remember to register your alarm with the Anchorage Police Department with a list of emergency contacts, what zones on the alarm correlate to specific areas of your home, and the name of the alarm company for the police to contact, if necessary. Discuss the available alarm options with your alarm company and don’t forget to check with your insurance company to see if you qualify for a discount because you have an alarm.

Burglary Prevention Basics:• Make your home look occupied.• Leave lights on when you go out at night or use automatic timers.

• Install deadbolts on all outside doors.• Lock all windows and doors before you leave or go to bed.• If you have an alarm, use it!

• Keep your garage door closed and locked.• Trim trees and shrubs to reduce hiding places.
