have their selections by the mid-dle of October.

The All School Reading Pro-gram has been quite successful since its inception in 2006. Reading scores on the NMSBA and NWEA have risen and li-brary circulation numbers have increased.

Feel free to ask your son or daughter about their school wide reading choice and when their done with the book, enjoy it yourself!

The All School Reading Selec-tions are off to a great start this fall semester.

There are a total of 10 selections with 2 of the books being the same book that both San Juan College and Ft. Lewis College are both doing with One Book, One Community Programs. We are still waiting for all of the books to come in from ama-zon.com and students should

Help, Parents and Guardians of

Chemistry Students!!

The students in my Chemistry I and

II classes are required to have a cal-

culator with scientific notation ca-

pabilities. This is noted in the syl-

labus they received on the first day

of class. As of the 6th week of

school, several students in each sec-

tion of these classes still do not

have a calculator and it is beginning

to have a detrimental effect on their

classwork.

I encouraged them to, if financially

possible, get a graphing calculator.

I know these are quite expensive

but they will be all that is required

even through their college classes.

If the graphing calculators are too

expensive, I have checked and

Walmart, Target, and the business

type stores have at least 2 smaller

version calculators that cost under

$15 each. Both Texas Instruments

and Casio have these smaller ver-

sions and they have the necessary

scientific capabilities.

Another option might be, if your

student has an IPad or IPod, to

make sure they download either a

free or low cost scientific/graphing

calculator app onto their machines.

There are some free or low cost

apps but I am not familiar with any

of them and am not sure how well

they would work.

Please, as soon as possible, either

purchase a calculator for your

chemistry student or insure they

download an app. These really are

needed for their classwork and lab

calculations as well.

Thank you,

Betty Strong

Mountain Day is scheduled for Wednesday, October 2nd. The entire school will be partici-pating in this event. The Freshmen and Seniors will be traveling to Dinetah with a guide to learn about culture and the ru-ins. The Sophomores and Juniors will be traveling to Narbona Pass with a guide to hike and learn about the historic events in that area. This a great opportunity for our students and staff to get outside and enjoy the changing of the seasons and learn about their culture.

On a Musical Note…

Several Advanced Band students

will audition for the Northwest

New Mexico Music Educators

Honor Band at Tse Bit Ai Middle

School on November 6, 2013. If

they are successful, they will per-

form with area Student Musicians

at Shiprock High School on Janu-

ary 31, 2014. A special guest con-

ductor has been contracted to lead

them.

The Beat Box Club is going very

well, and has many new members.

Chris Olonovich, Beat Box

Club President, is also doing his

Atsa project on Beat Boxing. The

members are having lots of fun

learning how to do drum sounds

and rhythms with their voice. Plans

include club members performing

at Open Microphone Nights.

ness and determination students share is

admirable. Being around the positive

educational environment is what I appre-

ciate most about Navajo Prep.

Most activities I enjoy doing occur out-

doors. Horse riding is something I like

doing because I can discover new things

about myself and learn other lessons. I

also like caring for livestock such as, my

sheep and cattle. For me minding these

animals is remunerated with tranquility,

humbleness and apprehension. These

pleasured activities I do shape my senti-

ments and outlooks.

When I gradu-

ate I plan to go

into a pharma-

ceutical col-

lege to become

a pharmacist.

I am also inter-

ested in be-

coming an

equine veterinarian. My current future

plans are in favor of a pharmaceutical

degree, but my plans are not decisive.

Owning a functional cattle and horse

ranch is my ideal goal. To benefit my

family with my academic aptitude has

always been my main hope.

My name is Kelly Lee. I live in Aztec,

New Mexico, but I am originally from

Sweetwater, Arizona. My maternal clan

is Hashk’22hadzoh7. My Step-father has

been raising me since I was six so out of

respect I go by his clan, Kinlichii’ii. My

biological father’s clan is Toaheedlinii.

Tachii’nii is my maternal grandfather’s

clan. My nali is !sh99h7, but my natural

paternal grandfather is Totsohnii.

High academic standards and independ-

ence are reasons I became interested in

Navajo Prep. I believe Navajo Prep can

be a challenging school completely worth

the commitment and effort. The willing-

The following stu-dents were elected dorm officers for

their dorm for the 2013-2014 school year:

Arthur Hall: Adreyan Pete-President Adriano Tsinigine- Vice President/Secretary Manuelito Hall: Quencavis Dodge-President Frank Moreno-Vice President Juwan Tsosie-Secretary Zah Hall: Crystal Stewart-President Jazmine Kinsel-Vice President Shundeen Martinez-Secretary

Bates Hall: Tristan Barbone-President Rainy Fox-Vice President Mya Greyhouse-Secretary Garrett Hall: Hannah Atone-President Brittany Arviso-Vice President Serena Grey-Secretary Dorm meeting facilitator: Averil Manuelito-Lee Residential Counselor They had their first meeting on Sep-tember 10, 2013 where they set rules for future meetings. The meetings will be bi-monthly to ad-dress dorm concerns. The meet-ings will be held on Sundays at 7:00 p.m.

My name is Frankie Moreno, I am four-

teen years old and I am from California. I

am Humming Bird People and born for

the Zuni-Water Edge. My maternal

Grandparents are People of the West and

my paternal grandparents are Lakota and

Sioux.

I enjoy riding BMX, because it’s cool,

Drawing, Learning with Computers and

Technology, and Listening to Music. The

main BMX trick I like is the 180 hop

because it’s fun rolling back. I mainly

like Rap and Hip-Hop music. The art I

enjoy learning and drawing is Graffiti art.

But the thing I enjoy the most is being

myself.

The things that I like about NPS are 1:

Everybody aren’t cheap wanna-bes like

my old school, 2: There’s fun activities

such as the Wal-mart trip and other stuff,

3: Because there’s juice dispensers in the

cafeteria and there’s pizza almost every

day.

When I graduate I want to go to a good

school and either become an Aerospace

Engineer or a Financial Manager. This is

The NPS Library welcomes Stephanie Billy as the

new assistant librarian for the year. Steph is the

mother of a NPS student, Nizhoni Jake. Please come

in and get acquainted with Steph and make her feel

welcome.

The school year is starting well with an average of 77

student visits per day in the library. The library was

closed for three days in August for NEWA testing,

but otherwise is providing student services from 7:00

am to 8:00 pm Monday through Thursday and from

7:00 am to 4:00 pm on Fridays.

Teachers are bringing classes to the library for re-

search and computer use as well. In August we had

19 class periods in the library.

New books are arriving. We have received over 130

books since the beginning of school, with more to

come. Come check out the new books. Please come

to the library for after school study and tutoring as

well. We have writing, math and science tutors avail-

able each night from 3:30 to 8:00 pm Monday

through Thursday.
