Mission Drift

I recently stopped by the Luther Seminary Bookstore. Pastors are permitted two addictions: coffee and books. While I’ve successfully made the transition to decaf coffee, I’m still a bit of a book junkie. I start to shake and cough if I have-n’t read a good book lately. As I brought a fat tome to the cash register, the man behind the counter asked me if it was assigned for a class at Luther Seminary. When I assured him that it was indeed a class requirement, the salesman told me that he could not sell me the book. Like any ad-dict, I grew incredulous when I found out that my reliable book dealer was refusing to take care of my fix.

It turns out that Luther Seminary is trying

to save students money by granting an online bookstore the exclusive right to sell discount text-books. As part of the non-compete clause, the school bookstore may stock assigned readings… they just can’t sell them to students. I could buy a coffee mug, a preaching robe, bulletin paper, or any one of the fine editions on the shelf that were not required for the class. I just couldn’t buy as-signed textbooks. As the bookseller and I chuck-led at the absurdity of the situation, I asked him if it would be okay if my wife came in and bought me the book. He hemmed and hawed and ac-knowledged that some students were using that loophole in order to buy books. I smiled and thanked him for his time and went home to order the book through Amazon. It turns out that you can’t judge a bookstore by its covers.

¹1 Corinthians 15:12-14

A hundred years ago, maybe more, some enterprising young student or some thoughtful old professor decided to open a bookstore at Luther Seminary. Presumably the founder wanted stu-dents to have easy access to affordable books. They never could have anticipated the dramatic changes coming to the publishing world during the age of the internet. But whoever started Lu-ther’s bookstore would surely be puzzled to dis-cover that students were no longer permitted to buy textbooks. That’s like Burger King going vegetarian. That’s like Dairy Queen selling cool whip instead of ice cream. That’s like Mel-O-Glaze Bakery giving up donuts and only selling gluten-free bran muffins! Times change and so do tastes, but you have to wonder about the future of any organization that dumps its original vision and mission.

Like Dairy Queen or Luther Bookstore, if

the Christian Church doesn’t cling to our original principles we will surely fade into obscurity. In his first letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul writes, “How can some of you say there is no res-urrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised, and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclama-tion has been in vain and your faith has been in vain.” ¹ As far as Paul is concerned, the mission

of the church is rooted in the resurrection of Je-sus. Vanity, vanity, all of this church stuff is van-ity unless we proclaim the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the promise of resurrection of all who believe. Come see Godspell Music Direction by Dianne Jelle

Our organist, Dianne Jelle, is musical director

of a new production of Godspell to be per-

formed in May. Godspell is a fun-for-all-ages

musical comedy based on the Gospel accord-

ing to Saint Matthew. It begins with John the

Baptist announcing the coming of Christ fol-

lowed by the baptism of a community of be-

lievers who then act out the parables and sing

songs of praise. With an upbeat, memorable

score by Stephen Schwartz, the parables of

Jesus Christ are brought heart-warmingly to

life. Some songs you might recognize from

this 1970’s off-Broadway show (which has

since become popular on Broadway) include

“Day By Day” and “Prepare Ye the Way of

the Lord.”

Strategic Plan and the Spiritual Life Commission

The Spiritual Life Commission provides many opportunities for all to connect spiritually

with others within our congregation, through prayer, communion, visitation, listening and

welcoming.

We have had a chance to look at the Strategic Plan of the church to find ways that we can

contribute to the critical success factors. We feel that the best way we can contribute to the

Strategic Plan at this time is to focus on Critical Success Factor #1, Reading the Bible,

and Critical Success Factor #2, A Conscious Dependence on the Holy Spirit, through

prayer.

One way to join others spiritually at Bethlehem is through prayer. Here are three

ways you can be involved at this time.

• Gathering for Prayer - Tuesday Nights at 6:30 at church

• Prayer Chain – The prayer chain is a way to share prayer requests with

other church members. To join either a phone group or an email group contact the church

office— (email) [email protected] (phone/voicemail) 612-721-5768.

Prayer Requests – Contact the church office to request prayer be shared via the prayer chains.

In the coming year we will be exploring other avenues to highlight prayer practices for

individuals and congregational enhancement.

The Spiritual Life Commission will also plan to organize a scripture calendar for 2014, “A Year

through the Gospel of John.”

If you would like to learn more about the commission, become a member, or assist in any

individual ministry, contact Juli Swanson or Rhonda Isaacs, co-chairs of the Spiritual Life

Commission.

Wonderful Wednesdays and the Hospitality Commission

May 1 Serving Group A (Marj Ramgren and Ruth Dahlgren, co-leaders)

May 8 Serving Group B (Anne Malachway, leader)

May 15 Serving Group C (This will be our final WW Meal until we resume on Sept. 11.)

Many thanks to all who have helped prepare, serve and clean-up our weekly meal. In particular, we’d

like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Beth Goblirsch for her wonderful, too-often-taken-for-

granted work. She plans our menu, shops at Cub, delivers many sacks of groceries to church, makes

sure that the perishables get stored in the refrigerator, does all the prep and finally turns out a wonder-

ful meal for the entire church on a weekly basis! Thanks also to Andrew who has a wonderful, warm

smile and is a willing helper. You are loved and appreciated. Thank you.

Please join us as we pray for the children of our church.

We will meet each third Saturday of the month from 9:30-

pray for all of our children, focusing on one topic per

month (such as protection from harm, discernment, find-

ing Godly friends and role models). We will also pray for

specific children whose birthday is in that month, as well

as other special prayer requests.

Please note that our first meeting will fall on May 25th

(the 4th Saturday) because of the Confirmation Brunch

on May 19th. In June we will move back to the 3rd Sat-

urday. The June meeting is June 15th, 9:30-10:30

Music Sunday

Join in the singing on May 5th! Both worship services will highlight the important role music plays in all our

worship, as we celebrate Music Sunday at Bethlehem. Worship Pastor Matt has planned a full morning of con-

temporary worship for the 8:30 service, and the 11:00 service will include a Festival of Hymns, with Clyde and

Theresa Lund sharing the stories of the hymn writers. The St. Anthony Brass will return, and the children’s

choirs will also participate. Whether you like hymns or praise songs, there’s reason to invite a friend to join you

in worship on May 5!

May 12 Congregational Training/Commission Fair

Would you be willing to serve as an usher, greeter, child care provider, coffee server, scripture reader, or sound

board operator – if only someone would teach you how? Join us on Sunday, May 12 at 9:45 for a time of congre-

gational service training! Several simultaneous workshops will be presented throughout the building, each last-

ing about 15 minutes, to give you an introduction to the ministry tasks that make worship possible each week.

You can attend two or more of these workshops to acquaint yourself with the basic requirements for each assign-

ment, then sign up at the Commission Fair to help in these areas throughout the year. Are you an expert who can

teach the basics of one of these ministries in an expedited format? We need your help! Contact Pastor Jo Anne

for more information.

Summer Worship Schedule

The summer schedule begins on May 26. The Contemporary worship time moves to 9:00 am, and the Classic

worship shifts to 10:30 am each Sunday except for one (see below). We will enjoy a combined coffee time be-

tween services, so folks from both services can have time together each week. There is no Sunday School dur-

ing the summer months.

Worship at the Park!

Mark your calendar now for June 30, when we will move our worship to the Minnehaha Falls band shell! Wor-

ship begins at 10:30, and we can picnic in the pavilion after worship. This endeavor is a product of our Strategic

Planning process, and an opportunity to connect with others who may not be familiar with Bethlehem.

Working Woman’s Bible Study

Join us in the narthex on Sunday afternoons at 3 pm, as we read and discuss the sermon text for the following

Sunday! For more information, contact Pastor Jo Anne.

Summer Music

Pastor Jo Anne is seeking musicians to provide special music during the 10:30 Classic Worship service through-

out the summer months. This is a great way to share your musical gifts with the congregation (without a long-

term time commitment)! Please let Jo Anne know what Sunday works best for you. Organist/pianist Dianne

Jelle is available to accompany instrumental or vocal soloists, if she gets the music at least two weeks in ad-

vance.

Dearest Bethlehem Family,

Thank you for the beautiful wedding

was great for making snow forts and snowmen since most of the snow this winter didn’t lend itself to the crea-

tive endeavors of children in the winter. Of course, we will welcome spring as soon as it gets here!

Once again our summer registration is online and has worked pretty efficiently so far. This summer we will of-

fer soccer on Thursday at Cooper field as well as continue the tradition of taking the children to swimming les-

sons on Fridays at the YWCA and, of course, multiple field trips. The school age children have a new opportu-

nity to work weekly with a group of artists at the Driftwood Community Arts Center in St. Paul. The staff has

already been making plans for field trips, studies to focus on this summer and plans for organizing our days. On

our webpage you will find a description of the weekly themes for which activities are planned. If you know of

families wanting to sign up for summer care remind them to do so soon, we want to plan staffing to meet the

need in each classroom. Sign up is online at www.bethlehemkids.org, click on the “Summer 2013” link in the

upper right corner.

Our Beginner and Pre-K staff will meet with families for the third time this year in a conference format to share

what the staff has observed. We look forward to showing off the growth each child makes in a variety of areas:

physical, emotional, academic, and social. So much of what these precious children learn in the give and take of

playing involves incredible social skills. How do I ask someone to play with me? How do I negotiate so I can

play with that toy next? What language do I use to say how I’m feeling? How do I get the attention I need in an

appropriate way? If we can teach these young children the skills of getting along with others now, imagine what

a difference it will make as they make their way through the various life lessons they are sure to encounter.

On May 21st our children will be participating in our annual “Wheel-a-thon” to raise money for World Vision.

The children will bring their bike, trike or scooter to school and we’ll all go to Cooper field together to ride

around a predetermined path. The children have always had an enjoyable time during this fundraiser, raised

more money for World Vision, and practiced their bicycle safety skills.

On May 31st the preschoolers will have an end of the year celebration in the BCC Sanctuary. All of the children

will participate with their class in singing songs they have learned this year. We also have a power point slide-

show of all of the children throughout the school year. Following the program, families are invited to stay and

share a picnic lunch. We’d love to have you come celebrate the end of another fantastic year; the celebration

begins at 11:00.

Your continued love and support of the center is noticed and appreciated!
