GREEN FAIRWAYS FOR THE WINTERCateechee Golf Club is one of the few golf facilities in the region that overseeds fairways for the winter. The list of reasons for doing this is quite lengthy, but the benefit to you is playing on fairways that are emerald green during the slowest part of the golfing season. As it does take a little time for the rye grass to grow in and become established, we must install a CART PATH ONLY policy for a good portion of the month of October. This gives the grass the best chance of becoming well established for winter play. We will get back to our normal cart path rules just as quickly as Mother Nature allows. We appreciate your patience and dedication for helping in the effort of keeping Cateechee in the condition of which we are all accustomed.

GEORGIA PGA JUNIOR TOURCateechee hosted the Georgia PGA Junior Tour the weekend of September 8th & 9th. In all, 40 junior golfers and their parents from around the state visited us for the weekend of competition. The weatherwas just as perfect as the golf course conditioning, which was appreciated by all who participated. Cateechee was represented well during the tournament by three of our own members: Alex Malcolm, CJ Griffin and Eli Scott. Alex played well enough to finish in 4th place in his division. We look forward to hosting this event again next year and hope that even more of our area juniors will be participants.

WITH BUCK WORKMAN, CGC SUPERINTENDENTON THE GREENThe annual report to Audubon International has been completed and approved. Cateechee Golf Club has now been a certified signature sanctuary for 13 years and is the only golf club in Georgia with that distinction. A major part of certification is completing annual projects that contribute significantly to improving environmental sustainability on the property. Our projects this past year included pesticide reduction research, tree replacement and improvements to the aeration system in the effluent water holding pond. We offer many thanks to all the volunteers who make Audubon International Signature status possible.

The Bentgrass greens at Cateechee survived the summer of 2012 very well. This result was obtained in part by improved maintenance techniques employed by the turf care team. The use of portable fans, careful disease management and diligent hand watering during periods of extreme heat were the main contributions to a successful summer season. The greens are scheduled to be aerated and top-dressed with sand on September 24th and 25th. The Bentgrass surface will be in optimum condition soon after.

Tees and fairways are to be over-seeded this fall with winter ryegrass. These areas will have to be irrigated throughout the day until germination and establishment are achieved. The end result will be beautiful green color during the winter and spring.

The clubhouse landscape team will be busy planting fall flowers in October. The lawn areas will be over seeded with winter grass. We expect a magnificent display of color in that area. The landscape team is also responsible for the clay tennis courts. They have been doing a lot of rolling and grooming in an effort to get the courts in top condition.

Cooler fall weather creates a perfect time to come out and enjoy all the amenities at Cateechee Golf Club.

Thanks to everyone for such a warm reception! Being at Cateechee Golf Club as the General Manager is a fantastic opportunity for Salley and I. Let me share some “words of advice” and comments I have already gotten from members:

“Keep the beer cold and the chicken wings hot!”

“We need different bar snacks.”

“There is no toilet paper in the bathroom.”

and my favorite,

“They couldn’t find anybody taller?”

The pace is fast and furious with many changes happening. The Fall menu should be debuting very soon, the Cateechee/Currahee Golf Club “Play and Stay” program is underway, and Fall is the best time of year to play golf, tennis, or start your new exercise program. Please let me know if I can make your Cateechee Golf Club experience better; my direct phone number is . . . hold on, I have to look . . . 706-856-3327.

Cheers,

Michael McInerney
