National President Peggy Thomas’ theme for 2012-2013 is “Soaring to New Heights…for God and Country” and her membership theme is “Angels in Service.” Every Auxiliary member is an angel hon-oring the veteran(s) in her life through her membership and service. Be proud of your membership and soar!

Veterans Day is a time to remember and honor all veterans of the armed services. If you would like to honor a special veteran in your life, consider purchasing a commemo-rative button from the national membership team. Each customized button contains a photo of the veteran (supplied by you). Please see the button order form on page A3 or on the department website and order one today. What a great opportunity to en-gage new members or share the Auxiliary’s

The Homeless Women Veterans Program provides assistance in the form of fi nancial grants to homeless or at-risk of being home-less women Veterans and her family.

We are thrilled that President Diana Sirovina has selected this program for her “special project” this year. The Homeless Women Veterans Program is an opportu-nity for the Auxiliary to continue to honor the service of women Veterans and to offer a hand-up of support as many struggle to put their lives back together.

Last year more than forty women Vet-erans received grants from the American

mission when people ask who is pictured on your button!

National Headquarters mailed 2013 Membership Renewal Notices on Septem-ber 15th. Anyone whose dues were not pro-cessed at Department Headquarters by Au-gust 20th should have received a notice.

Many members have expressed concern about the Join By dates printed on their membership cards. If your date is off by one year, do not worry. This date refl ects when your membership was processed by Nation-al Headquarters and has no connection to your Continuous Years. If your Join By date is incorrect by more than one year, please notify your Unit Membership Chairman who will submit a correction form so Na-tional can update their system before 2014 membership cards are printed next year.

THANK YOU! to everyone who has al-ready responded to our annual calendar fundraiser. Your donations support our vet-erans, the military and their families. Con-tact Department Headquarters if you need

Legion Auxiliary. In the last two months this program has awarded over twenty grants, mostly for rent or security depos-its. Your donations have helped keep over 60 women Veterans from sleeping on the streets in Wisconsin!

“I cannot thank you and the American Legion Auxiliary enough for your assis-tance during this time. I appreciate it so much that I cannot tell you. It will help me greatly as I am trying very hard to get more hours of work (hopefully full time) in the next 60 days. I have been scrambling trying to stay afl oat for almost a year now. Honestly, this is the fi rst time in my life that I have not felt completely alone.”

The above note was received from a

additional entry forms. They make great birthday, Christmas, and anniversary gifts (hint-hint). There are 365 chances to win because winning entry forms are returned to the barrel every day, allowing you the chance to win more than once! The last day to enter is December 31, 2012. Daily draw-ings start January 1st.

The IRS requires all non-profi t organiza-tions whose income is less than $50,000 to fi le an IRS 990N ePostcard on an annual ba-sis at www.irs.gov. The IRS is revoking the tax-exempt status of organizations that have not fi led for three consecutive years. If your Auxiliary unit is in jeopardy or has ques-tions regarding their tax-exempt status, you must contact IRS Customer Service at 877-829-5500 for assistance. Neither Depart-ment nor National Headquarters can restore a Unit’s tax-exempt status. However, Judge Advocate Onderdonk is compiling a list of Units whose tax-exempt status has been un-fairly revoked, so please notify Department Headquarters if your Unit has been affected.

She was recently diagnosed with PTSD (post trau-matic stress disorder) and MST (military sexual trauma) and is now receiving care at a VA Medical Center.

Unfortunately, grant funds are run-ning low and your support is needed now more than ever! Wisconsin Women of the Year

The Camo Quilt Project start-ed in 2006 when Linda Wieck made a camouflage quilt for her son-in-law prior to his deploy-ment to Iraq. During training, the other soldiers in his unit also requested a quilt. Linda scrambled to complete the ad-ditional 48 quilts before the unit deployed. Since then, the Camo Quilt Project has made and dis-tributed 17,600 quilts to troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan. At this time, the Camo Quilt Project needs contributions to fulfill requests for 800 quilts. Donations for the Camo Quilt Project may be sent to Depart-ment Headquarters by marking #4850-Camo Quilt Project on the General Fund Suggested Donation Sheet available on the

department website.Julie Stuhlmacher was honored

as Wisconsin’s Unit Member of the Year for her involvement with Trees From Home, Inc. Their mission is to send a piece of the holidays to service men and women who are far from home. Members of the military receive a fully decorated 12-inch artifi-cial Christmas tree and handmade tree skirt, along with a Christmas card from the donor and tree dec-orator, Christmas candy, a tooth-brush and toothpaste and other goodies. To date, Trees From Home has shipped over 5,000 trees and treat boxes. In 2012, they hope to ship an additional 2,000 boxes to our heroes over-seas.
