From the Editor

It’s not often that the editor’s phone buzzes with hot news but that was the

case recently when the Wakes Committee stood down, leaving the future of Wakes in doubt. I’m sure there’s no one in the village who wants to see it’s demise but a successful Wakes doesn’t organise itself.

The old committee have done sterling work over the past few years against a backdrop of rising costs, poor weather and an expectation from many, that Wakes and volunteering is for other people.

Even if you’re not into sport, you can’t have failed to notice how it was the volunteers who made London 2012 the success it was. Now is your chance to step up to the plate. The more people that come forward, the easier the new committee’s job will be.

Pop the 9th October into your diaries and come along to Fountain Square at 8 pm and volunteer for something, however small.

VILLAGE EMERGENCY?

Having just been to the Annual General Meeting of the Wakes

Committee and find that we are, for the first time in many years without a carnival Committee which means....

NO TIDESWELL WAKES 2013.

The instant reaction to this news is that it has been said before and it always does go ahead, but this year is different –the committee have stepped down and, after many years of hard work are not willing to be re-elected. Without a committee there is no Wakes. We are sure that the majority of the village don’t want Carnival week celebrations to end, so we need you to come forward and help to prevent this.

There will be an Emergency Meeting at 8.00 on Tuesday the 9th of October at Fountain Square Church. At this meeting we need to elect a new committee.

NO COMMITTEE – NO WAKES.

Please, please, please come along. You do not have to join the committee, although if you do that is great! All we want is for anyone who doesn’t want to see wakes die, to come along and offer support in any way that they can. Anyone who would like to attend but are not able to on that day, try to let someone that is attending know of your interest so they can pass it on. You could also join the Tideswell Wakes group on Facebook and express your interest on there. If you are not sure what is needed then come along and find out.

See you on the 9th and let’s SAVE TIDESWELL WAKES.

HARVEST TIME

It’s been a tough time for farmers this year with so much rain, but at least there

has been some late sun to make it easier to get the harvest in. Most of us don’t see our food till it arrives in the shops, so are unaware of the struggles to get it there, but we know we should be grateful that even in hard times, we are unlikely to starve.

Harvest Festivals are an opportunity to express our gratitude for all we have, and you are invited to join the congregation at the Parish Church on Sunday 7th October at 10.30 am, at our short Service for All. At the same time, we will be remembering those who have little, and in particular the people of Rwanda in Africa.

TIDESWELL CINEMA

This month’s film is “The Woman in Black” starring Daniel Radcliffe, is

at Tideswell Cinema, on Thursday 25th October at 7.30 pm in The George.

It tells the story of a young widowed lawyer who is sent to a remote village to settle the estate of a deceased eccentric woman. He is not welcomed, as the villagers are trying to conceal a deadly secret - a secret he is soon to discover. This is a stylish Gothic story that marks the return of the famous Hammer film stories.

Guest members are welcome (£4.75), to take their seats after 7.15 pm. Members are encouraged to arrive before then, or to reserve their seats in advance. (872327)

TASC at Half Term

Summer was very exciting at Tideswell Holiday Club and

thanks to funding from Derbyshire Community Foundation there was a great programme of activities including trips to Carsington Water, Millhouses Park and Chatsworth. Transport was provided by Bakewell and Eyam Community transport and their excellent team of drivers. The children were also kept entertained on site, with Disney Day, the TASC Olympics, a Magic Show, and a morning making fresh pasta and a healthy sauce, which the children enjoyed for lunch, under the tutelage of the wonderful Michelle from Tideswell School of Food.

We are now looking towards the October half-term and the Holiday Club staff, the lovely Carol and Lauren, will no doubt be arranging some equally exciting activities, especially some spooky Halloween celebration. As well as having access to exciting games, toys, excellent sporting and outdoor facilities the club offers superb child care and engaging activities for 10 hour, 5 hour or 2 hour slots for children aged between 4 and 11. Half term opening times are: Tuesday 30 October, Wednesday 31 October and Thursday 1 November. For more information, please contact staff between 3:20 pm and 6:00 pm on 07792 075486.

Darkbrook & the Tideswell Brook

It is 10 years since Darkbrook last wrote to the Village Voice regarding the flow of

Tideswell brook through the site.

As Tideswell folk will know, the brook is culverted through the village until it opens at Darkbrook and then, at the boundary with “The Croft”, its flow is restricted by a large gritstone lintel fitted across the culvert by former occupants years ago. As the brook descends in height through the village, the pressure and volume of water, in times of flood, can be seen to be immense when it expands into Darkbrook, where the man-made damming of the brook’s flow by the lintel downstream means that an unnaturally high back-up expanse of water seeks a downhill exit.

Nature has coped with the blockage for many years by repeatedly forcing another waterway through the boundary wall and sending boulders down Buxton Road. The precaution was taken many years ago of not

replacing the two metres of wall constantly affected.

Darkbrook copes by taking all possible alleviating action and precautions to protect the brook’s flow, given its restriction off site down the culvert. Recently we have removed years of accumulated silt from the brook and grounds to help keep the flow free and clear.

A solution would be to culvert the brook in accordance with the rest of the village, but this would have colossal ramifications in terms of the further pressure and volume of water sent back up and down the village culvert, already suffering as village growth and climatic changes continue to increase surface water and pressure on it.

The brook is allowed to expand at Darkbrook (which thereby relieves problems for everyone else) and to oxygenate which keeps the trout and water voles happy!

Gardens R Us

If you haven’t visited the Kitchen Garden recently you are missing a treat. All the

areas not being used for cultivation are now covered in gravel, thanks to The Stone Warehouse who kindly donated the gravel, to Markovitz for transporting it, and to Bushey Heath Farm for getting it to the garden, and to the stalwart volunteers who laid and raked it. It makes the garden behind the Institute a pleasure to visit.

The weather has not been great but we have made headway with growing a variety of vegetables this season, and we were delighted to have won 3rd Prize for our onions in the Allotment Association Show.

It’s a lovely place to spend time and we would dearly like to add a bench or two to the Garden but we have no finance so if anyone has a garden bench they would like to donate, we would love to hear from you.

And that’s not all, the flower gardens in Fountain Square and Bank Square have been full of colour all through the summer, thanks to the villagers who donated the plants and the volunteers who have tended, dead-headed and weeded them. Long may it continue.

If you have would like to make any donations or would like to become involved in any way. Please contact Mary Landon - Tel 871817(Flower Gardens) or Judy Cooke - Tel: 872408 (Kitchen Garden).

Table Tennis

Is there anyone out there who fancies a game of table tennis, particularly any

golden oldies, remembering the days of their youth?

Nicholson Court are particularly interested in such an idea. There is a large comfortable lounge to set up an almost new table tennis table, all necessary equipment and facilities for tea and biscuits.

Anyone interested may call one of two ‘star’ players in Terry Hooley (871169) and Bob Eyre (872670) or call the centre manager Claire on 0370 192 4164.

Dog fouling

It has been noted that despite clear signs stating that dogs are not allowed on any

part of the sports complex and school playing fields, certain dog owners are wilfully ignoring the notices and allowing their dogs onto the area with the resultant deposits of excrement.

Some owners do clear up after their dogs but deposit the waste bag into one of the bins on site. The bins are not for this purpose and it is not an acceptable practice.

We would like to remind dog owners that there are health hazards connected with such mess being left on the grounds, and this is particularly so in respect of children.

We do not wish to take action against these dog owners but if this practice does not stop we will have no alternative.

Tidza Ramblers

Last month’s walk up Mam Tor and along the ridge was a familiar route to most

of us.

‘Wonderful!’ said the one person who didn’t know it as she admired the views from the top. It was indeed and that included the weather. A kestrel hovered and alighted at one point. People of all ages were making the most of a glorious day. Special mention must go to the gentleman attired in kilt and sporran.

Never had a Bradwell’s ice cream tasted so good as at the end of this walk.

Calling all Audio Typists

We are the Tideswell Living History Group and are making a record of

our village’s recent history. Over 30 people so far have told us of their experiences of celebrations, of growing up, and of working in Tideswell and Litton. We have their recordings and will put them into the local history archive for future generations. But we have a bit of a problem, we need a written copy of their recordings and that means listening to them and typing up what they have to say to us.

If you can audio type, have access to a PC and can find a few hours a month your help will be invaluable, we have all the other things you need. We just need your time and skill. Please get in touch; email [email protected] or call Judy Cooke on 872408 or Mary Landon on 871817.

Over The Border

For one of our field trips this year, the History Club visited Casterne Hall near

Ilam. Not many of our members had even heard of this Hall, but it turned out to be a real eye-opener and an absolute gem. In Ilam village you turn up the Manifold Valley and after a longish drive through beautiful pastureland and some steep tricky bends you come to this superb looking Georgian house. This is the ancestral home of the Hurt family going back to the late 1400’s, and it is so nice to go round a place where the furnishings and decoration are very much in keeping with the age and style of the building.

Charles Hurt, the present incumbent, welcomed us with a completely encompassing introduction and nearly all the rooms - even the family rooms were open for our inspection. But it hasn’t always been in this beautiful condition - Charles’ parents had to buy the place back in the 1950’s and then dedicated the rest of their lives to restoring it from being in a pretty dilapidated state to the “Grandeur in Miniature” we experienced that evening. It was quite humbling to see the trust that the family placed in us - because there were family trinkets left around everywhere for our appreciation.

The front of the house is authentic Georgian, the rear has some Jacobean, there are Roman remains in the foundations and the hillsides are littered with iron-age, bronze-age and new stone-age remains.

Because of its position and unspoilt nature, the Hall has been used many times by film and TV crews.

Being a sociable, as well as an enquiring bunch of pilgrims, we ended the night with beer and sandwiches at the Jug and Glass.

Many thanks are due to Julia Walker for finding the place for us and to Elaine Chapman for being the “whipper-in”.

Holiday Cottage Debate

Dear Sir,

The debate in Village Voice about holiday homes has been, thankfully, very measured and thoughtful. However the fact remains that about a third of our older cottages have gone this way. This is at present, sustainable - but if you visit some of the more remote villages in the Yorkshire Dales, then the figure can be far, far higher, As you walk round these villages mid-week in winter, you realise that they have become merely fossils. They have had all the local life sucked out of them and no longer will they be able to hold a sports day, a gala day,or even a harvest festival.

Tideswell, being much closer to Southern England, is even more attractive, because a cottage here at only £160,000 seems like small change compared to what the good folks of London have to pay for their accommodation.

What’s to be done? There’s nothing much that can be done in a free market, but maybe a decent rise in the rates that they pay might slow the stampede down a bit.

Parish Council Matters

No members of the public attended the September meeting of the Tideswell

Parish Council.

Amongst the mundane and routine tasks, the councillors have also undertaken some pleasant duties. The bolts from the “Lightning tree “ have been passed on to Tony Hill, local historian, for safe keeping.

The Tideswell Living History Group had also received confirmation that the parish council has obtained the old telephone box for the grand sum of £1 and work may now be commenced on the new projected use. Watch this space for more.

Residents have agreed to donate plants, which will be planted in the Pot Market flower beds, after parish council staff have dug the area. The upgrade will make that area much more pleasant for people who live here.

On the garden theme also, the council has agreed to give up the allotment, so that a resident from the allotment waiting list may use it. The polytunnel will be sold for £500, please contact the clerk for details.

The clerk has requested minutes of a DDDC meeting which discussed the public toilets in Tideswell, as no information has been received about the projected cost of refurbishment. It was agreed that no action be taken until such costing is available.

During the better weather, families have enjoyed picnics in various areas of Tideswell, which is enjoyable for all concerned. However, the council is obliged to remind

people that cars should not be parked on Common Land. Picnic yes, Car Park No.

There is currently a vacancy on the council, and permission has been given for a new member to be co-opted. Those interested should apply to the clerk for details

The chairman will update the list of councillors on the parish notice board shortly.

The current team comprises:• Clerk : Lesley Bramwell 01298 872000• Chairman :Philip Swarbrick 871862• Vice Chair :Sue Barber 871644• Councillors:• Mary Landon• Kath Lees• Gary Newton• Sarah Noble• Marie McGuiness• Julie Walton• Sue Willis

Members of the public are most welcome to attend any of the parish council meetings which meets on the second Monday of each month in the Tideswell Library at 7.15 pm.

Live Arts from Tideswell Cinema

The National Theatre Live screenings at Tideswell Cinema continue with

Timon of Athens at 7 pm on 1 November 2012. This production will be screened at our usual venue at The George Hotel, Commercial Road, Tideswell.

Simon Russell Beale takes the title role in Shakespeare’s strange fable of consumption, debt and ruin, written in collaboration with Thomas Middleton.

Wealthy friend to the rich and powerful, patron of the arts, ostentatious host, Timon of Athens is surrounded by free-loaders and sycophants. He vastly outspends his resources but, finding his coffers empty,

reassures his loyal steward that all will be well.

When he calls upon his associates, instead of offering help, they hang him out to dry. After a final, vengeful banquet, Timon withdraws to a literal and emotional wasteland, living off roots and pouring curses on a morally bankrupt Athens.

Tickets, priced at £10, can be bought from 8 November by emailing [email protected] or calling Tony Wilson on 01298 872379. Take a look at our website www.tideswellcinema.org.uk for our full programme of events.

At the time of writing there are still a handful of seats left for the screenings of The Last of the Haussmans on 11 and 13 October and also for Swan Lake on 23 October.

Money for Alzheimer’s

After the Summer, the Soroptomists have started the new “term”.

Plans are well advanced for the annual Charity Christmas Card shop, which benefits many charities. The event will be held at the Parish Church, Buxton in the first week of November.

During the break we held a clay pigeon shoot, raising a total of £1,060.00 to help Alzheimer’s sufferers.

Tideswell Youth Club

The Club has been operating very successfully over the last few years

with major funding of our Youth Leaders through a Sport England grant. This grant will be used up by the end of 2012 and we are in discussion with Derbyshire Youth Service about the future the Club. For it to continue, we will need volunteer helpers to assist the professional staff. If you think you could help, please contact Anthony Gill on 07895 773031

Funeral Notices

There has been a stream of correspondence on the Tideswell

People Facebook page about the way that notices of the death of loved ones are displayed in the village.

Whilst there is no criticism implied at all about Philip at the Post Office, indeed it’s appreciated that he does display them, the debate has been fuelled about where is appropriate.

Is this a case for a new notice board, somewhere prominent in the village, or is there an existing space that would be acceptable?

The bard of Tideswell, Dave Greenan, offers us his view below but please contact Tina Edwards on 872257 or on the Facebook page if you have your own thoughts.

IN PASSING.

When I depart this mortal coil,And decamp for heavenly bliss,

I have but one request to make,And that my friends, is this:-

DO NOT announce my sad demiseIn the cabinet used to advertiseOdds and sods, and junk galore,Affixed to the Post Office door. * * * * * * * * *As in……..

Villa for rent in Cal-a-Dor,Kittens to good homes,Barbells, used just once before,And moulds for garden gnomes.

‘Gardening services’, handyman needed?Pathways cleared and gardens weeded,Hedges trimmed and lawns re-seeded.Fences painted, ponds de-reeded.

The running club, that should be fun.Or pay to get your ironing done.Baby sitter?, ring this number.Fitness classes?, ‘Spin’ or ‘Zumba’?

Bunk beds for sale, house to rent,A curtain rail, a four berth tent.A trouser press, a chest of drawers,A party dress, internal doors. Some ‘bric-a-brac’,……And by the way,Dave Greenan died the other day.

* * * * * * * * *When loved ones from this life depart,We don’t post the news in ‘Exchange & Mart’.And yet, in Tidza it’s placed aroundThe ‘Wanted Ads’ and ‘Lost & Found’??!

I wonder then, is it just meWho feels the lack of dignity,And total, blatant, disregard,In placing a black~bordered cardIn amongst the dross?Could we not find a quiet spaceTo mount a small glass fronted case.A formal, ‘designated’ place,To announce a neighbour’s loss?

Leather and Willow News

2 Sept – TCC 137 vs Fir Vale 170-79 Sept – Sheff. Waterworks 220-6 v Tideswell 101-916 Sept Baslow 92-6 v Tideswell 89

Three defeats for Tideswell in slightly improved weather as the season draws to a close. Choosing to play Sheffield Waterworks in 2012 might have been tempting fate, but in fact it was a sunny afternoon and the main problem was that the hosts, whom we’ve never played before, were very good. Their 220 (Matt Jellis taking 2 of the 6 wickets to fall) was too big a target. Mike Sayers and Tim Pepper saw off the opening bowlers, and Dave Waining (26) and Sam Smith (22) consolidated, but once they were out there was little to follow.

The Fir Vale game, the last home game in 2012, took place on another fine day, but it wasn’t Fir Vale that turned up. The Sheffield side have strong links with the Sheffield University Staff XI, and

the team that came to Tideswell was largely made up of the latter - whose 1st XI won the Yorkshire & Derbyshire 1st Division this year, while their 2nd XI topped the 3rd Division. Their total of 170 wasn’t that large, and credit here is due to Matt Peakman, making his TCC debut with 8 overs for 30 runs. His Dad, Tim, hit a 50 in the Tideswell reply, but from 131-5, with the last 5 wickets going down for only 6 runs, it was the academics who took the laurels.Of the scheduled four fixtures v Baslow this summer, only the last was actually played. On a soggy pitch, Tideswell could only manage 89, largely thanks to 43 from Ben Rooke. Ben’s 8 overs with the ball only went for 17 as Baslow also found conditions difficult, Greg Taylor taking 3-15. In the end, as the rain started, Baslow crept home with 6 wickets down.

With thanks to our match ball sponsors: Elliotts Fish & Chip Shop – M.Markovitz Ltd – Tideswell Stores
