Explore YOUR MSU Resource in Glacier County Dear 4-H Members, Parents, & Leaders, It is beginning to feel like fall outside and as such it is time to gear up for another exciting year in 4-H. We are hoping that this year will be both exciting and challenging for all of you and help you develop leadership skills. Speaking of challenging this year, we were selected to be part of a test group for a new online 4 -H enrollment process. Unfortunately it is not ready to roll out right now, when all of you are anxious to get started. The State 4-H Office is working on getting this program up and running in the next couple of weeks. We had a great discussion at the recent 4-H Council meeting about what it is that youth should be getting out of 4-H, and many leaders are concerned about the service and community involvement of many youth. In addition another concern that came up was the participation of the youth enrolled in 4-H participating in the club activities. After a very thought provoking discussion it was determined for this year that as leaders, all of us will strongly encourage club participation. The 4-H pledge is, “I pledge my Head to clearer thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to larger service, and my Health to better living for my club, my community, my country and my World.” The challenge then is what as participants are you doing to reach those objectives? Are you reaching out and giving back to the world around you or are you just enjoying the ride? Speaking of giving back, 4-H has established a great presence in the area and many people are willing to donate to help a service oriented organization succeed. We need to make sure with the fundraising that we are doing, that we give back to the community. Not necessarily monetary donations but one of the great things we can give is our time. It may be as club participation in community cleanup days or finding unique ways to volunteer. Also, many clubs are starting to accumulate sizeable funds and those funds are for the kids. One quote that I like about those funds is “they were earned by the kids for the kids and not for their retirement.” Let’s use those funds for fun things that the kids would like to do and include community service projects as an option. By giving back to the community both it and us will be better people because like the 4-H motto says, “To make the best Better.” I’m excited to see what new education growth we can make this year and let’s make this the best year so far. 2013 MONTANA 4-H CITIZENSHIP SEMINAR

The 2013 Montana 4-H Citizenship Seminar is scheduled for March 2-4, 2013 in He-lena. The days have been changed to Saturday-Monday to minimize the number of days youth miss school.

Activities will take place in the State Capital building, other state buildings, and the Bill Hamilton Building at the Lewis & Clark County fairgrounds.

The Leadership Team will determine an appropriate service-learning project and each delegate and county will be given the opportunity to contribute. Each delegate is expected to sponsor one potential “bill” suitable for the 4-H Legis-lature to act on. This should be submitted, electronically, to Stephanie Davison ([email protected]) or Torie Bunn ([email protected]) by Febru-ary 1, 2013, along with your other registration materials. Prior to the event, the bills will be reviewed and grouped appropriately into committees in order to determine the first phase of committee work.

History Bowl– counties may send teams of two individuals to compete in the Mon-tana History Bowl. A preliminary written test given on March 2 will determine the teams to participate in the final event.

Eligibility: 4-H members must be 14 years of age by October 1, 2012 and must NOT have previously attended Montana 4-H Citizenship Seminar. It is recommended that participants are older youth who have had education and experience in vari-ous components of citizenship. Each county will be allotted two delegates if regis-tered by the February 1 deadline. After February 1, registration will be open to al-ternates on a first-come, first-served basis. Past experience show alternates have been able to attend.

Returnees: Several Returnees will have the opportunity to serve as the Leadership team. The application deadline is December 1, 2012. The Leadership Team will have one face-to-face meeting in Bozeman prior to the Seminar.

Chaperones: Each delegate is expected to have an adult as a designated chaper-one. Chaperones are asked to “act” as lobbyists during the legislative process.

Housing: Each county delegation must make its own housing arrangements.

Fees: There is a $70 registration fee for each adult and youth to offset program costs as well as delegate and guest meals. The Montana 4-H Foundation is contrib-uting $2000 to the event.
