from the RABBI Steven L. Silver, Rabbi OCTOBER 2012 TISHRI/HESHVAN 5773 VOL. 68 NO 8 WWW.TEMPLEMENORAH.ORG Dear Friends, On Yom Kippur I challenged our congregation to get more involved in Jewish activism in various ways; specifically with regard to Israel advocacy. I believe that it is essential to visit Israel so we can see for ourselves what is at stake. As I said in my Kol Nidre sermon, as long as we have not personally walked Israel’s streets, tasted its food, drunk its water, smelled its soil, Israel is an idea only, not a reality. How can we claim to love Israel when we have not made the effort to experience Israel personally? To that end, Cantor Jessica and I will be leading a Temple Menorah Mission to Israel this July. Further information will be available on-line soon. On Yom Kippur morning I focused on the terrible situation of our public school system, which has the highest student-teacher ratio of all 50 states and is 47 th in per pupil funding. How can that be when California is by far the richest state of the 50! I urge you to look at Proposition 30 this November 6 th which will restore a portion of the massive budget cuts made to our state schools in the last five years. In the same sermon I challenged our congregation to personally get more involved with community projects, particularly in the area of mentoring at-risk children. Our own Tikkun Olam-Social Action Committee (TOSAC) is partnering with the prestigious Children’s Law Center (whose CEO is our member Leslie Heimov) to offer mentor training. Every school district has programs to place community volunteers with individual children as math and English tutors. As the People of the Book how can we tolerate the waste of a child’s mind? For additional information please email [email protected] . Lastly, we have arranged for the two major candidates for the newly apportioned 33 rd congressional district to meet with our congregation. Businessman and community activist Bill Bloomfield (I) will address the congregation on Saturday, October 13 and will speak about the Genesis of a Political Activist. Thank you Harvey & Joan Roth and Gerry & Valerie Hale for co-chairing this program. Congressman Henry Waxman (D) will address the congregation on Friday, October 19 and will speak about Iran and the Oil Embargo. Thank you Rascha Hall (chair) and Geoff Hirsch, Cliff Numark and Nelson Zager co-chairs of this Program. Please join us for our first Community Shabbat Dinner of 5773 following the service. There is a $22 per person fee for the dinner with reservations before October 9 ($30 ppn from October 10). Reservations should be made with Paola at [email protected]. Dear Friends,

On Yom Kippur I challenged our congregation to get more involved in Jewish activism in various ways; specifically with regard to Israel advocacy.

On Yom Kippur morning I focused on the terrible situation of our public school system, which has the highest student-teacher ratio of all 50 states and is 47th in per pupil funding. How can that be when California is by far the richest state of the 50! I urge you to look at Proposition 30 this November 6th which will restore a portion of the

massive budget cuts made to our state schools in the last five years.

For additional information please email [email protected].

Lastly, we have arranged for the two major candidates for the newly apportioned 33rd congressional district to meet with our congregation.

5773 Temple Menorah Gala Honorees Leslie Friedberg became active in the Tuvia Parent

Committee in 2006. She served as Kindergarten Room

parent, Tuvia Committee Chair, Tikkun-Olam Co-Chair

as well as President of the Parent Committee from 2011-

2012.

Leslie became a member of Temple Menorah in 2009

and is off to a fast start contributing to our community.

For example, she recently Co-Chaired and produced,

along with Megan Cotugno, the Charlotte Diamond

Concert which brought hundreds of people beyond Temple Menorah community

and was a key fundraiser for the Tuvia Playground project.

Leslie has enjoyed taking adult education classes at Temple, including Judaism

101 and 102 and plans to tackle Hebrew with Cantor Jessica. She enjoys

spending time with her family — husband Russell, Hunter in 3rd grade and

Hamilton in Kindergarten. Her hobbies include gardening, running and yoga.

Before becoming a full time Mom, Leslie was a math teacher, specializing in AP

Calculus. She fits in to our Temple equation perfectly!

Faith Goldman has been a Temple and Sisterhood

member since 1980. She served as Sisterhood

Program VP, along with Bonnie Leopold from 1985-

1988 and has also served as Sisterhood

Corresponding Secretary and Sunshine Committee

Chair. Faith received the Sisterhood Women of Merit

Award in 2009. She has been Chair of the Sisterhood

Bereavement Committee for over six years, facilitating

approximately 30 funeral receptions. Faith

serves on the Bikkur Cholim Committee and recently accepted a position as a

Trustee on the Temple Board.

Faith produced the show, Slow Boat from China; a journey finding Robert’s past,

that was a successful Sisterhood fundraiser in 2005. She is very involved in the

Rosenberg Cultural Center; as a participant, presenter and committee member.

Faith also brings Shabbat light and joy to the Pacific Inn residents weekly and

reaches out to Temple members who are unable to get out of the house.

Faith treasures her daughter Naomi, her son Sam and his wife Melissa, and

Harry who has been the love of her life for the past 17 years. Her hobbies include

cooking—she baked and donated 2000 slices of mandle bread for Purim in

2008. In short, Faith is one of Temple Menorah’s key ingredients!

Alissa Materman has been affiliated with Temple

Menorah since 2002, when her daughter Maia, who will

become Bat Mitzvah next year, began Tuvia preschool.

From the beginning, Alissa took on various positions in the

Tuvia Parent Committee, becoming Co-Chair of the

Committee in 2005.

In 2009 she became bat mitzvah along with 8 other

fabulous adults with whom she still shares a special

bond. In 2010 and 2011, Alissa was the chairperson of the Religious School

Committee, a position that came with a Board seat — a small fact that was not

uncovered until after she accepted the role! In 2012, Alissa stepped up to

organize our first-in-a-long-time Temple Menorah Congregational Retreat and

Family Camp this year at JCA Shalom, where we had more than 50 Temple

members for an amazing weekend.

Between Temple activities, volunteering at the kids’ school, working at UCLA,

and being an active member of her high school’s reunion committee, Alissa

does not have much spare time. When she finds a free moment, she enjoys

reading and drinking wine with the book group girls, theatre-going and other

artistic endeavors.

She learned the importance of volunteerism and giving back from her parents,

in-laws, and grandparents and is proud to demonstrate to her children how they

can also make a positive difference through actively engaging with the Jewish

community and causes that are important to them.

Alissa, along with her very supportive and understanding husband Dan,

daughter Maia, and son Darin, who is now in 4th grade Religious School, feel

an amazing kinship with Temple Menorah. They truly feel like it is their home.

PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENT UPDATE

Tuvia and the Temple Menorah community celebrated the completion of the new Tuvia playground, Maureen Liner Memorial School Yard, with a dedication ceremony and Kiddush lunch after Shabbat services on September 15. The playground is named in memory of beloved Tuvia teacher Maureen Liner and the Kiddush lunch was hosted by Maureen’s parents Judy and Mort Liner. About 150 Menorah community members were in attendance as well as family and friends of the Liners.

The Liners gave a short speech and Leah Ackermann thanked playground committee chair Evy Jacobson and committee member Peter Cotugno for their efforts with framed hand-made art she created. Peter’s construction industry expertise has been essential to the project. He has also secured $90,000 worth of in-kind donations in materials and skilled professional service to build the bathroom and oversee construction of the playground.

As you may know the full scope of the projects includes Phase One, the playground remodel, which is complete, and Phase Two, building a two-stall bathroom adjacent to the playground. This bathroom is important as it helps potty-training children (no walking down a very long hallway) and aids teachers in staffing and supervision while on the playground.

Since the dedication ceremony, the Playground Improvement Committee has raised almost $5,000, which covers the cost of sealing the roof and installing the windows. The project still needs $7,000, which will make installing the toilets and sinks possible and then the bathroom will be usable! You can help by purchasing a tile for the dedication wall or by making a direct donation to the playground fund.

The deadline has been extended to October 8. Contact Evy Jacobson with any questions at (310) 701-9541 or [email protected].

TIKKUN OLAM SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE

upcoming meetings Sunday, October 14, 9:30 am Temple Menorah Sunday, October 28, 12:00 pm Temple Menorah

During the past year, the Social Action Committee, under the direction of Gail Rodkin, committee chair, has been focused on making the Committee a more vital and integral part of the Temple Menorah family. We are striving to create events that both benefit and connect with our three core areas of interest: the synagogue community, our local community, and the Israeli community.

foster kids need your voice! Educational Advocacy Training October 14, 2012 at 1pm

Nearly three quarters of children in foster care currently perform below grade level, and nearly half have been held back in school. Forty-six per cent of foster youth fail to complete high school, compared with 16% of non-foster youth. Once they leave the foster care system, typically around age 18, more than half of foster youth are unemployed, almost a third will become homeless, and one in five will be incarcerated within two years. To addresses this need the CLCC Children’s Advocate program trains individuals to serve as a child’s advocate at their schools to ensure the requirements of the child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) are being met and that their education needs are being taken care of. Join us and make a difference in the life of a child!
