Dear Family of Faith Members,

During our September Stewardship Committee meeting when we were finalizing plans for this month’s campaign, one of the members repeated this comment made to him over the summer: “It seems like all we talk about around here is money!” It was not the committee member’s sense

that the comment was meant as a compliment! I had to admit that it was true, partially true anyway. I’m pretty sure it’s not “all we talk about around here.” But it is something we talk about quite a bit. And it will continue to be, not only in October but during the rest of the year, too. Why? Because one of the clearest ways we express our love for God is through the sharing of our most treasured resources, money being one of them. Because the church can only serve Christ’s people when we have the resources necessary to do so. And because good stewards find joy in sharing those resources. Stewardship is not just about money. It is also about the commitment of our time, our talents, our compassion and our love for one another in the strengthening of the body of Christ, his church. I hope that this stewardship season will encourage you to reflect on all dimensions of your commitment to our family of faith. And I sincerely hope that you will speak with me if you think we talk about money too much! In Christ’s peace, Bill

EVERYDAY MISSIONYou are invited to join in as we answer Christ’s call to care for others. Some of our mission activities call for a bit of expertise but most require nothing more than willing hands and open hearts with no experience or special skills.

God has blessed each of us with different gifts. You never know what you can do until you try.Your personal touch could make all the difference in the world to someone in need.

• Continue to bring canned goods every Sunday. Baskets will be near the doors to the sanctuary and chapel when you arrive for worship.

• Place food, clothing, hygiene products and household items in the open “white” closet on the first floor so our volunteers can deliver them to those in need. Please no toys at this time- no storage space.

• Collect travel size shampoos, soaps, toothpaste, lotions and other toiletries. Place them in the small, wire shelves in the open “white” closet on the first floor. The various groups who collect these items throughout the year are cooperating so you may bring them in as you get them and not wait for special collection dates.

• Join others from our congregation to prepare food for needy people in Camden. Come cook with us in the church kitchen or be part of the Sweet Eats Club and send in desserts to top off the meals. Contact Sharon Hoobler at [email protected].

• Think ahead before overloading your schedule. Make time for mission all year long. Learn about programs for tutoring and mentoring. Play bingo at the Haddonfield Home. Take that big leap and commit to crossing the road into Camden to meet the people and learn first hand about programs like New Visions, Urban Promise, South Jersey Food Bank, Cathedral Kitchen or Kids Alley Cafe.

• Scholarships for Kids Alley Café and Urban Promise are needed now more than ever.

• The Guatemala Milk Fund needs donors to continue to provide for the medical and nutritional needs of babies with no other hope.

• Caring Hearts Ministry has many ways you can help. Please call first (confidentiality). Contact Ilyse at 428-2273 or [email protected].

• The Clinic at St. Wilfred’s Church will need doctors, nurses, receptionists and translators. At this time FPC members are holding the clinic every other month. For information contact Melinda Lamb at 428-3325 or Jill Mascena at 428-7342.

• Emergency Clean-Up Buckets are a good project to do with family, friends, neighbors or co-workers.

• Potential mission trips to ravaged areas in the U.S. and even an international mission trip are in the planning stages. Contact Rita Brown (see below) to express your interest.

• Keep your eyes and ears open for special opportunities to participate in mission activities as part of a group and/or individually.

The weekly pew bulletins, monthly Glad Tidings, and the mission bulletin boards (outside the sanctuary and Fellowship Hall, as well as, on the first floor stairways) will have information for you. A real effort will be made to place updates on our new web page. The Mission Notebooks on the shelves at the end of the hall between the parlor and the sanctuary offer more information about PC(USA) mission, past and present FPC Haddonfield’s mission activities and our partner organizations.

Find the call that fits you best and answer it.

Thank you to all those dedicated members of our congregation who have served others so faithfully over the years.

New ideas and leaders are always welcomed.

If you have any questions or comments please contact the mission committee chairperson, Rita Brown, at 856-768-3293 or [email protected] or drop a note in the “Mission/R. Brown” mailbox with the yellow label outside the church office. Leave your contact information and every effort will be made to respond to you within a week.

Preschool News

Thank You to Andy and Brian from the Preschool!!

Thank you to Andy Reinicker and Brian Needham for their hard work this summer to improve several areas outside our church. They installed the new wooden fence in

between the Manse and the playground, which was in great need of repair. The new fence will help keep children on our playground safe, and it looks beautiful! They also installed the pavers outside the church doors by the Masonic Lodge. Some of these pavers will be replaced with engraved pavers. Engraved pavers may still be ordered through the preschool.

SENIOR MINISTRY How many times have you sat in the same pew or the same section of the church and seen the same people, old and young. Then you notice two or three weeks have gone by and the older person you always saw is no longer there or is now struggling to walk.

The Senior Ministry is looking for seniors in our congregation who need assistance getting to church, someone who is homebound and would like visits or calls. Perhaps this is your parent or a neighbor. Or that person who sat in your pew.

Please let Betsy B. in the church office know of any needs or concerns of any of our senior members. Nearly one-quarter of our congregation is in this category. We are here to help them.

Megan Mascena Now Associate Producer for New Fox ShowIn Hollywood, Megan Mascena, who grew up in our church, is Associate Producer on the Fox series NEW GIRL, which premiered September 20, at 9 p.m., on Tuesday night. She supervises all aspects of Post Production, from filming through delivery of the show. Megan was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Producers Guild of America and, more importantly, as an Elder at Silverlake Community Church, in Los Angeles, which has her parents, Tony and Jill, dancing with glee!

According to one of her bios: "Since her Emerson College days of running around Boston with a 20 pound video camera, Megan has spent her career working in all aspects of production. Involved in producing content for all the major networks, Megan found her niche in Post Production.

For a more creative roll she has teamed up with Robert Gaston to produce the independent film '2 Minutes Later' and the short film 'Will You.' "

NEWS FROM PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN

The “Purpose for Presbyterian Women” states, among other things, that members support the mission of the church worldwide. One of the projects taken on by the group to fulfill its commitment has been to support Church World Service through their Blankets+ program. Thanks to the generous support of our congregation, PW has been able to reach that goal.

Blankets+ is a special mission of CWS which provides funds for people in need around the world. During the past sixty years, Church World Service has worked in partnership with local communities to identify their needs and access the resources they need to build a foundation for a better future. Some of these resources include blankets, tents, food and other emergency supplies after a disaster has struck; tools and seeds for refugees; wells for drought areas; and literacy training for women struggling to realize their potential.

Presently an Emergency Clean Up is in progress for those affected by Hurricane Irene from North Carolina to New England. Items being distributed include not only blankets but also buckets, supplies for food banks, hygiene kits and school kits.

Presbyterian Women recently received a letter from the Rev. John L McCullough, Executive Director of CWS, thanking us for our generous contribution. As he writes “…Thanks to caring donors like you, we can provide food, water and other necessities to families displaced by natural disasters… I remain hopeful because of the creative, resilient women, men and children we assist around the world, and because of caring people like you who empower us to act on your behalf.”

Once again, Presbyterian Women thanks our congregation for its generous support which gave us the opportunity to send $869.00 to Church World Service.

Crop Walks are interfaith, community fund-raisers to support Church World Service’s ministry for hunger and disaster relief, development, and refugee resettlement. Church World Service will receive 75% of the funds raised to provide food, shelter, water, and necessities for survival around the world. In our community, Cathedral Kitchen and Kids Alley Café will receive the remaining 25% of the funds raised. Ask friends, family and co-workers to walk or sponsor you as you spend two hours of your Sunday afternoon to make a difference for people here in Camden and all over the world. Let's make Haddonfield a Community Responding to Overcome Poverty (CROP)!To sign up to walk, or sponsor a walker, stop by the church parlor after any worship service during October. Virginia Ritchie
