As I am sure you are all aware, Niamh Dickinson, a Year 7 pupil at Brockington passed away suddenly just prior to the half-term holiday. I would like to offer, on behalf of the college, our sincere condolences to all the family and we pray that God will give them the strength to work through this awful period in their life. Niamh was a lovely girl and had made a fantastic start at Brockington College. She was popular with countless pupils and staff across the college and a pupil of whom we were very proud, as indeed were Pastures Primary School, Niamh’s previous school. The last Friday of the half-term was a distressing day for everyone at Brockington, but pupils and staff were wonderful in their care for one another and I would like to record my thanks to everyone at the college, as well as Reverend Taylor, who supported us on the day and hosted our Harvest Festival, held in Niamh’s memory. I would urge all parents to attend the Parents’ Forum event on Wednesday 23rd November from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm. There will be a presentation on Academy Trust Status which will include information about what differences this status brings to schools and the process involved in conversion. As you may be aware, many schools across Leicestershire have already converted to Academy Trust Status and it is something that the remaining schools must and will seriously consider. The Governors of the college have made a commitment to considering the implications of remaining as part of the Local Authority or to converting to Academy Trust Status, but will not make a decision on which path to choose without full consultation with staff and parents. However, they feel that at this stage it is important for staff and parents to have full access to all facts, hence the meeting on Wednesday 23rd November. As you will be aware from the letter issued prior to the half-term holiday and from the information on page 2 of this bulletin, we are introducing a new punctuality policy from 24th October. It is an essential part of our role to encourage and insist upon high standards of punctuality, to prepare pupils for their future. We do appreciate that this is more of a challenge for some pupils than others, but other than in exceptional circumstances, all pupils must arrive by 8.35 am at the start of the school day.

Punctuality At Brockington College we are proud of our high levels of attendance and punctuality. Please remember the school day starts at 8.35 am when all pupils need to be at their lockers. There are a very small number of pupils who are regularly arriving to school after 8.35 am. As a result, from 24th October we are introducing a new punctuality system in the mornings. At 8.35 am the Green Lane gate is automatically locked to prevent intruders from entering the grounds. Any pupil who is late to school will need to come on to the grounds via the Mill Lane gate (opposite the Leisure Centre) or down the main drive. They must then enter the building through the main doors and register at reception. The following process will then begin: 1. The pupil will be issued with a late slip informing them that they have a detention at break time on that day. The detention will be for the amount of time that the pupil was late that morning. They will be informed where to go to complete the detention. 2. The pupil must arrive at the detention promptly at the start of break time. 3. If the pupil is late to school on more than three occasions in a week, they will receive an after school

detention on Friday afternoon. If the third occasion of lateness is on a Thursday, the detention will be the following week to allow sufficient notice to be given to parents.

The existing arrangement of sending parents/carers an SMS text message to notify them of lateness will continue. We do understand that on occasions a pupil may reasonably be late for acceptable and unavoidable reasons (an appointment, unexpected traffic, etc). Under these circumstances please note the circumstances in your child’s Student Planner. In the case of changes to service bus (Arriva, Centrebus, etc) timetables, we must ask that pupils take a bus to school that allows them sufficient time to alight from the bus and make their way to school in good time, allowing them to be ready at their lockers for 8.35 am. Thank you in anticipation of your support.

The Pastoral Team.

ECO – Schools

Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life. There are 46 countries around the world that run the Eco-Schools programme, linking more than 40,000 schools – from the UK to France, from Morocco to South Africa. Eco-Schools is administered in England by Keep Britain Tidy. Pupils at Brockington are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the Eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community, it is our pupils that decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to do it. Brockington College has already received two prestigious Green Flag awards in July 2007 and in January 2010, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity. We are now working hard towards our third renewal and are positive that we will again be successful. Our main environmental themes concentrate on waste reduction, developing biodiversity around the college, healthy eating and recycling of paper, plastic and cans. Each form has one or two Eco – warriors who are responsible for monitoring of the form’s recycling of paper and plastic bottles. They also attend regular meetings and feedback to their form about all Eco-schools projects, activities and achievements. Those pupils and staff who are even more interested in our Eco – schools programme have the opportunity to be part of the Eco – committee that is the driving force behind our exciting eco – schools programme. We would love to meet our new Year 7’s on the team!

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY Enrichment Day October 2011

As part of the whole school enrichment day, the Design Department invited pupils from each

house to take part in a cooking challenge. Based on the Olympic theme, the pupils had to

prepare and cook a meal for an athlete of their choice. They had to research and justify the

reasons for their choice of meals and how it would benefit the athlete; the food was then judged

and scores given. The groups were competing for their houses and did an excellent job.

Well done to:

Science Rewards The Science Department is focussing this year on “Doing the Basics Well”. We want all of our students to help us improve the quality of their learning and development of their skills by ensuring four simple things happen every lesson:

They arrive on time

They arrive equipped for the lesson

They arrive to ready to work – resulting in not being given more than one consequence in the lesson (C1)

They arrive having completed homework

All students who manage to do these four things for every Science lesson in a half term will receive a small token of thanks and praise – a congratulations fridge magnet, colour coded to match the colours of the spectrum. We will write to parents, however, if students have persistently failed to meet these basic expectations.

I hope you all find a nice, red fridge magnet in your kitchen very shortly!

Mr D Fenney, Curriculum Team Leader for Science

Congratulations to Phoebe Lewis (8T) GKR Karate World Cup Journey On Sunday 10 April Phoebe entered the World Cup Selection Tournament at Cocksmoor Wood in

Birmingham, where she won two gold medals and was selected for the World Cup Squad. The

GKR Tournament took place on the 9 & 10 July 2011 at the NIA Birmingham. The event showcased GKR’s

best competitors from the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the USA who were all vying for the title of

‘World Champion’ in their respective divisions. Phoebe had some hard rounds and suffered a few knocks,

bumps and bruises but took the top points on the day and is now GKR World Champion (12-13 years). The

event was spectacular and the atmosphere was electric. Another former Brockington pupil also won

Gold. Kieran Gohil took the gold in his division which was a brilliant achievement as he has only recently

started his Karate journey.

There was no rest for Phoebe as training continued because on Saturday 17 September the GKR British

Champion Qualifiers were held, where Phoebe once again took double Gold. She is now training hard and

is hoping to compete and hopefully add British Champion to her World Champion title. The event takes

place on Saturday 19 November at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield. Her success so

far has seen Phoebe picked for the GKR British National Squad, which will give her the opportunity to

travel all over the world competing in many tournaments.

Everyone at Brockington College would like to offer Phoebe congratulations and their support for her

upcoming events. We hope you win Phoebe and do us, your parents and yourself proud!!

Brockington Bake Off Are you in Year 8 or 9? Do you have a parent or an adult that is a superb baker?

We are looking for 8 pairs to compete for the Brockington Bake Off trophy on 2 December.

If you are interested please put your name forward to Mrs F Clarke by email. You will need to be available from 4.00 pm for a 4.15 pm start.

You will need to bring your own ingredients and the brief can be obtained from Mrs Clarke. Selected pairs will be notified as soon as possible.

Forest of Dean

Study Visit

Just before half term, forty five of our year 8 pupils took part in the Forest of Dean Study Visit. The combined History and Geography trip has taken place for a number of years and has always been popular with the pupils, and this year was no exception. The group stayed in St Briavels Castle YHA, the former hunting lodge of King John, and visited a variety of attractions within the Forest of Dean, including Chepstow Castle, Clearwell Caves, Symonds Yat and the Dean Heritage Centre. The visit builds on topics studied in History including castles and the Industrial Revolution and those studied in Geography such as the study of river processes. This year’s trip proved extremely successful, with the pupils being praised for their attitude and behaviour by the staff at various attractions. Throughout the trip, the pupils displayed a great enthusiasm for all the activities and put a lot of great effort into their costumes for the traditional medieval banquet held on the Thursday evening. The medieval murder mystery was done exceptionally well; those playing key roles did so with lots of enthusiasm. Well done to all who went!

Kenya 2012

With less than 5 months till departure, the Kenya Team are busy fundraising to ensure that they reach their £40,000 target. Over the half term week the Team went to Asda at Fosse Park and

did some bag packing. It was another successful weekend, totals for the event are yet to be confirmed, but all signs are looking good. Thank you to everyone who supported them and donated to the cause.

The Kenya staff team also completed a walk up Mount Snowdon. What started out as a fun activity in an effort to fundraise and team build,

quickly turned into an Epic Adventure. The adults involved were warned on arrival at the Pyg Path, that conditions were poor at the top and that it would be advisable not to complete the walk. Never ones to let the Kenya Team down, they continued on with no idea of what they were about to face. After an hour of walking and ascending the mountain, the fog dropped which made visibility very poor; the winds picked up to 80 mph; the temperatures dropped to minus figures and the hail showers began. After a long and gruelling 3 hour trek, the team finally made it to the top, relatively unscathed and proud of their achievements in such adverse conditions. The winds continued to cause issues on the descent, but eventually they made it safely back to ground level, all in one piece! Thank you to everyone that supported the Small Change Challenge. We raised £350.05 in total. The winning forms were: 8R - £42.44 8C - £38.86 8K – £29.29 7O – £29.11

Their prizes will follow shortly, but congratulations to those forms for a fantastic fundraising effort. Remember to shop using www.easyfundraising.org.uk. This website allows online shoppers to access hundreds of top name company sites e.g. Asda, Boots and Easyjet. If these websites are accessed through easyfundraising and purchases are made they donate a percentage of what is spent directly to Kash4Kenya, without any additional cost to the consumer. It’s simple and easy to use and for every pound spent money is donated to charity! For more information, or to find out how you can help visit our website at www.kash4kenya.com or contact us at [email protected]

Meal Aid

The Meal Aid programme is still going well. Staff and students have the opportunity to donate each time they use the canteen at break and lunch time. They can donate anything from 2p upwards. This money is then used to fund a lunch programme in Sagail Nursery School in Kenya. This feeds15 needy young students who would not eat during the day without the programme. Please continue to support Meal Aid, every penny counts! 38p will pay for one meal for one child, this is less than a flapjack or a pizza from the school canteen. We also sell our Alternative Gifts Vouchers. These make an excellent alternative to birthday, Christmas and Easter gifts and every pound spent is donated to the Meal Aid Fund. As well as the vouchers, a certificate is provided explaining where the money will be spent. Please contact the school office for more details.

spaces in the timetable permit) for casual pay and play use, as well as weekly team training. The pitch

can be hired by the third or in its entirety, (our thirds are approximately three times the size of

some operators’ small sided pitches). We also hire out the facility on Saturday and Sunday too if you

need a surface that won’t get muddy in winter! Whether you want a pitch for a one off football game

or need a pitch to train on a weekly basis, we offer competitive prices and a state of the art playing

surface to suit your sporting needs.

For more information, please contact Steve Buck ([email protected]) or 0116 286 3722 for availability and prices.
