Parish Feast Day—Perunnal It truly was an auspi-

cious and blessed day on

September 11, 2011 when our parish celebrated its

annual Perunnal which

commemorated the feast

of the Nativity of the Blessed

Virgin Mother Mary. Alt-

hough our parish was not named after the Blessed

Mother at the time of in-

ception some twenty-five

years ago, it is evident she

always had a special hand

in the formation of our parish here in Toronto and therefore it comes as no

surprise as our church is named after

her!

In the early years of our parish

under the great leadership of Rev. Fr. Peter Kochery, Holy Qurbana was cele-

brated once a month at St. Margaret

of Scotland Church with a parish com-

munity of hardly ten families. Today,

twenty-five years later our parish com-

munity has grown immensely in number, where we now celebrate weekly Sun-

day Masses, run an active Sunday

school program, have a vibrate, young

MCYM group and organize many great

spiritual events like retreats and

youth conferences all under the lead-ership of many great vicars including

Rev. Fr. Peter Kochery, Rev. Fr. Anthony

Chethipuzha, Rev. Fr. Gigi Philip, Rev. Fr.

Cherian Mambrakuzhiyil and our cur-

rent reigning vicar Rev. Fr. John Kuria-kose.

This year’s Perunnal seemed to

bring back everything in full circle of all

that has happened these past twenty-

five years. We were privileged to cele-

brate our Perunnal this year at our very first church St. Margaret of Scotland

Church.

One day Parish Retreat

“The word of God is living and active.

Sharper than any double-edged sword, it

penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit,

joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts

and attitudes of the heart.” Heb. 4/ 12.

As we know, the word of God

can change the life any person who lis-

tens and opens their hearts to it. It was a

wonderful experience to almost the en-

tire congregation of our parish to spend

a day in listening and reflecting over the

word of God on Saturday, September

10, 2011 at St. Margaret School, Toron-

to in preparation to the celebration of

the Nativity of blessed Virgin Mary, the

heavenly Patron of our parish and the

parish feast.

In fact, the parish was in a mood

of a renewal by observing Ettu Nombu

with prayer meetings, fasting and so on.

The parish community has been prepar-

ing for a while for the retreat with ardent

intercessory prayers especially to Moth-

er Mary for the renewal of our people

and the smooth running of the day. The

well known Charismatic preacher, Rev.

Fr. Kurian Puramadathil, the associate

pastor at St. Thomas Syro Malabar Mis-

sion in Toronto, was the preacher, along

side with Mr. Johnson Chakkalakal and

with music accompaniment by Mr. Ron.

The main theme of the retreat

was family. There were four sessions

dealing with various aspects of the fami-

ly life in the light of the word of God.

The truth that we can lead a peaceful

and holy family life only in relationship

with God, the source and founder of the

family, has been affirmed. The im-

portance of strong positive relationship

between family members was stressed.

The entire day has been observed in a

spiritual

atmosphere. A temporary set up of a

church was made in the School hall. The

Blessed Sacrament was present all

through out the retreat, which brought a

calm, spiritual, and peaceful environ-

ment. The day was concluded with Holy

Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sac-

rament, which was the high point of the

retreat. A close nit feeling was brought

to the community when the retreat end-

ed with a Blessing of the Holy Eucha-

rist.

This retreat was truly a renewal and

spiritual experience for all who attended

and a perfect way to end our Mother

Mary’s Ettu Nombu and celebrate the

parish feast. Thanks to Achan and parish

council members for having arranged an

excellent retreat for the parishioners to

renew themselves and glorify God.

Praise the Lord.

Saint of the Month — Jean De Brébeuf.

October 19th is the

feast day of St. Jean de Brébeuf.

He was born on March 25, 1953

in Condé-sur-Vire, Normandy.

In 1617, he joined the Jesuit

Ministry, and later travelled to

Canada to continue his mis-

sionary work there. Having

quickly accustomed with the

Huron natives near Lake Hu-

ron, he became an expert in

learning and understanding

their customs and languages.

However, his effort to convert

the local natives came with lit-

tle success.

Due to the war between

England and France, he was

forced to return to France in

1929. When the peace treaty

was signed in 1933, he returned

to the Huron Natives. The next

sixteen years he dedicated his

life to converting the natives

despite the pain and suffering

that was inflicted upon him.

Brébeuf and the other Jesuits

were frequently blamed for

crop failures, epidemics, battle

defeats etc. and at times were

physically assaulted by the na-

tives. Despite these obstacles,

by 1647, he converted thou-

sands of Hurons.

During the time when

he was in Quebec to take care

of the Indians at the reservation

is Sillery, the Iroquois had be-

gun their war with the Hurons.

On March 16, 1949, the Iro-

quois captured several Huron

villages and seized Brebeuf and

fellow Jesuit Gabriel Lallemant.

Both of them were fastened to

stakes and tortured to death.

Brébeuf was a Jesuit Mis-

sionary who experienced in-

comprehensible suffering dur-

ing his mission preaching. Be-

cause of his conviction in the

face of adversity, he was canon-

ized as a Saint and a Martyr in

1930. He still remains as one of

the most cherished early mis-

sionaries in Canada.

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Sept 8th

`In a loud voice, Elizabeth exclaimed:

“Blessed are you among women, and

blessed is the child you will bear. But

why am I so favored, that the mother of

my Lord should come to me?" Lk 1:42-

43

The Nativity of the Blessed

Virgin Mary is celebrated on Septem-

ber 8. When Mother Mary was born,

there was a little light, and hope for the

world that was covered in darkness and

sin. Mother Mary lived her whole life

without sin,

and con-

ceived a

child, named

Jesus. It was

through the

Blessed Vir-

gin Mary,

that our world

was saved from

death. She

taught, loved,

and drew us

closer to her

Son. Mother

Mary was our direct connection to

God. If you called out Mary, she

would call out God. Mother Mary was

beautiful, pure, modest, chaste, hum-

ble, and obedient. Without Mother

Mary, our life would be completely out

of control. She helped us through eve-

rything. She prayed for us, pleaded for

forgiveness to the Lord, and protected

us with her shield. To give her thanks,

our Church had special prayers in the

East and West side. We also fasted on

the first 8 days of September to prepare

for the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin

Mary. With fast and prayer, I am sure

that Mother Mary has blessed each one

of us in a special way. Thank you

Mother Mary! Please pray for us.

Thy birth, O Virgin Mother of God, heralded joy to all the world.

For from thou hast risen the Sun of justice, Christ our God.

Destroying the curse, He gave blessing; and damning death, He bestowed on us

life everlasting.

Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

For from thou hast risen of Sun of justice, Christ our God.

The Perunnal festivities be-

gan with Morning Prayers, followed

by the Holy Qurbana, where the

main celebrant was none other than

our very own Rt. Rev. Msgr. Peter

Kochery [who now holds the position

of Vicar General of Syro-Malankara

Catholic Exarchate in the United

States] who was gracious enough to

join us on this special day all the way

from New York, USA. Our main cel-

ebrant was also joined by Rev. Fr.

Paul Vellukunnath and Rev. Fr. John

Kuriakose to celebrate the Holy Mass.

A grandiose procession was held af-

terwards commemorating the feast of

the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin

Mother Mary, with traditional chen-

da mellam leading the parishioners

around the entire block of the

church. Festivities came to close with

an evening sadhya for the whole con-

gregation.

We are thankful to our Be-

loved Mother Mary for continuously

interceding for our parish, especially

on this day. Through her prayers our

parish has been showered with many

blessings from the Heavenly Father.

As she continues to intercede for us,

we pray that we attain her virtues

and quality so that we may grow as a

church in accordance with God’s will

and grace.
