Special points of interest:
SPRING DANCE QUIZ NIGHT LUNCH PHOTOS CHRISTMAS PARTY
Dear Members Hasn’t time flown! We are approaching the middle of Spring and soon Christmas will be upon us once again. Apart from our October lunch on Sunday 9th October, the other high-light in October is our Spring Dance on Satur-day 15th October. The band Passion Works will be taking us back in time when the pas-sion was for love and peace and flower power reigned. I hope to see many of our members on that night reliving their youth and
donning the clothes and hairstyles of that era. It is going to be a fun night so if you have not purchased your tickets, please get them as soon as possible.
I would like to make a couple of special requests of you good members and please give this plea the consideration it deserves. Firstly we are desperate for members to volunteer their services to cook for our monthly lunches. Finding cooks each month is proving to be difficult and we have had to resort to catering dishes from outside the Association. It has always been a tradition and a privilege to taste and enjoy traditional and hawker dishes made so expertly by our own members and we hope to continue this prac-tice but unless we have more volunteers from the membership, we will continue to struggle to maintain the success we have had in previous years.
Secondly, some of our Management Committee members will be stepping down from their positions in April next year and it is im-portant that these positions are replaced by members eager to continue the high standard of service that the present committee and past committees have provided to the Association. Please consider this request seriously and I would be more than happy to provide more information to any member who would like to serve on the Management Committee or other sub committees. You can either speak to me at the Lunches or phone me on 9398 5375. The wellbeing of our Association will depend on members giving some of their time and talent to ensure that the vision of the Association continues well into the future and that our unique heri-tage is promoted and preserved.
I would like to take this opportunity of wishing the Malacca Portu-guese Eurasian Association a successful celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Portuguese landing in Malacca. A detailed itin-erary of the celebrations is included in this newsletter.

Twenty Seven members and friends some more thirsty than the others gathered excitedly at the main gate of the Swan Brewery in Canning Vale at 7pm for a conducted tour. We were met and greeted warmly by Roz a senior guide who turned out to be a ball of fire an indefatigable lady with a razor sharp sense of humour that kept us entertained throughout the tour lasting an hour or so. The facility was ideally designed to enable viewing down to the ground floor where various activities were in motion. Very few personnel appeared to be on the production line which is understandable due to a large degree of auto-mation and we were proudly informed that the Swan Brewery was the first fully automated brewery in the world commissioned in 1978 with a capacity of three million hectolitres. In 1992 it became part of the Lion Nathan family and now produces one hundred million litres of beer annually
The brewery is named after the captivating Black Swan which is of course synonymous with WA and has been a local icon for more than one hundred and fifty three years having been established by Frederick Sherwood in 1857. Some snippets which may be of interest :-
• Staff include a team of qualified beer tasters (don’t get excited extensive training is required to become fully qualified).
• Testing is physical, instrumental and microbiological. Different parts of the mouth detect different tastes e.g. bitter, sweet, sour and salt. An adult has nine thousand taste buds. Shelf life under normal environment is between six and eight months.
• Spent grain (hops and other solid matter known as trub) is subsequently sold as cattle feed. In my next life I want to be part of the bovine family
• Yeast (old strain) is sold off to farmers as pig feed. I still fancy being a bovine.
• A work force of three hundred work a two by twelve hour shift and three by eight hours with the onset of Summer.
• Stock in the warehouse represents a two week turn around with sixty per cent for metropolitan consumption and the balance to country WA.
• Clear glass bottles seem to be in vogue instead of the traditional dark brown the difference being in the sen-sitivity to light of the hops currently being used.
On conclusion of the tour we were led to the brewery bar which I dare say was the main objective of the ma-jority or at least the grown ups and we were treated to a selection of hot finger food and a variety of eight dif-ferent beers served personally by Roz at the draught fountain. A very interesting and thirst quenching expe-dition very many thanks to Joan and Roz. Ernie Lopez
