The weatherman cooperated and summer officially closed out with tennis players and golfers enjoying a beautiful day on the courts and course, as did everyone that attended the Labor Day Pool Party. Great fun for everyone! 60 people had an absolutely wonderful evening at the Wine & Gourmet Dinner last Saturday. Executive Chef Joel Bueno prepared a fabulous 5 course meal which was accompanied by some interesting wines (wasn’t the port outstanding?!!). Thanks to Alice Rana and the Social Committee for arranging this special event… with a special “thank you” to Laverne Baldwin who worked so hard pulling everything together. October has some special events that you won’t want to miss including:
Touchdown Thursday is the theme for Cocktails with the Council on Thursday, October 14th. Some Dallas Cowboy players will be in attendance.
Our Halloween Bash is on Saturday, October 30th
. Dress up your goblins and come to Thorntree for a great night of fun!
If you haven’t meet our new PGA Head Golf Professional, Bert Walker, be sure to stop by the golf shop and do so. Bert is a graduate of Southwest Texas State University and has been a PGA Class A Professional since 1998. His resume includes being the PGA Head Golf Professional at Prairie Lakes Golf Course, Tangle Ridge Golf Club, and Hackberry Creek Country Club. Our new golf carts have arrived! Our new E-Z Go carts look similar our old fleet except they have a better electrical system. Reminder: help minimize wear & tear… please “double-up” with 2 golfers per cart whenever possible. Mark your calendar for these golf events in October: the 25
th annual Lady Thornbird Invitational
Tournament October 5-7; the men’s Fall Member-Member on October 16th and 17
th; and the
Couples Club Championship on October 23rd
. For details and to signup, check with the golf shop or call them at 972-296-7317. Have you noticed all the new faces around the club? Since introducing the new membership program, over 50 new members have joined their friends as an “Associate” at Thorntree. If you’re a Full Privilege Golf Member and would like to reduce your dues by over $100 per month, Contact Rhonda Whisenant, Membership Director for details and assistance. Social or tennis members, now is the time for you to upgrade… bring a new member with you and enjoy the fantastic savings! I look forward to seeing you at the Club – bring a prospective member as your guest!

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest (Oct 7): Late Swedish writer Stieg
Larsson’s final novel in his Millennium Trilogy is said by reviewers, once
again, to be an exhilarating demonstration of “Larsson’s mastery of the
unexpected.” Lisbeth Salander, the unorthodox young computer hacker
involved in a long-distance (online) relationship with publisher Michael
Blomkvist, lies in her hospital bed, recuperating from serious injuries she
received during events at the end of Larsson’s previous novel. From this
hospital bed (where she spends most of the third novel), Lisbeth puts her
brilliant mind to clever use in outwitting the long arm of the Swedish Secu-
rity Service, her silent but most mortal enemy. The film version of Hor-
net’s Nest enjoyed a popular European debut in November 2009.
The Big Rich: The Rise & Fall of the Greatest Texas Oil Fortunes (Nov 4)
“...profiles the Big Four oil dynasties of H.L. Hunt, Roy Cullen, Clint Mur-
chison and Sid Richardson, along with their cronies, rivals, families and, in
Hunt's case, bigamous second and third families.” NYTimes book re-
viewer Mimi Swartz suggests that this book, like Tommy Thompson’s
“Blood and Money” and Edna Ferber’s “Giant” is required reading in order
to understand the Texas need for money, for bigness, for power. In light of
the current economic downsizing in American households, these Texas
excesses, though historically accurate, begin to feel almost fictional in the
enormity of their size and scope.
Cutting for Stone (Dec 2): Set primarily in Ethiopia and New York City,
Abraham Verghese’s first novel Cutting for Stone is a saga told from the
point of view of Marion Stone, one of the twin sons of British surgeon
Thomas Stone and a beautiful Indian nun who dies during childbirth. A
physician himself, author Verghese develops his characters against a back-
drop of detailed medical procedures and harrowing wounds, both physical
and psychological. True, there is blood. But there is so much more. Cutting
for Stone is an “unforgettable story of love and betrayal, medicine and
ordinary miracles - and two brothers whose fates are forever intertwined.”

to RSVP) before each meeting, so if you wish to be on the mailing list,

On The Spot Putting
How many times have you been out on the golf course and struggled with putting?
Putting is one of the most difficult aspects of the game. It's very difficult to get the speed of the green in combination with the slope of the green. And please, let's not forget about different grasses on different courses, different times of the day, not to mention weather conditions. Let's face it, putting is hard!
Several years ago I spent a week with the putting guru Dave Pelz at his Austin, Texas test facility. Mr. Pelz gave me a tip that I still use to this day. Too many players aim for the hole based on how much they guess where the putt is going to break (i.e., the putt is two balls to the left of the hole). If a player putts over that exact spot, more than likely they are going to miss the putt! The reason that they are more than likely to miss the putt is that the player becomes too focused on a spot equal with the target. The ball has no chance to go into the hole.
Mr. Pelz believes what I term APEX putting. APEX putting is picking an exact spot before the hole, putt over the ex-act spot, and let the slope and speed of the spot take the line towards the hole. One way to practice this is taking some coins to the practice green, placing where you think the break will occur, and begin to feel the speed and slope of the green.
If you still have problems, give me a call for a brief lesson to help make your game better. Have fun on the course!

Thanks also to our Interclub chairpersons: Sherry Boles, Sondra Swan, Kaye Askew and Collette Diedrich, who worked hard coordinating the competitions. Walnut Creek took the TriClub trophy back to their course this year, but we’ll be ready for them next year when Rolling Hills also joins us. Mark you calendar to play in the Metroplex closing day at Thorntree on October 13
