The 2009/2010 year has been an exciting year for REBs with the move to the Saturday Riverside Traders Market helping raise public awareness of the organisation. The new gazebo and flags all help attract people to our stall and also the array of goods and produce we have for sale. Our presence at the market has also helped increase REBs' membership. I would like to thank the following committee members for their help and support and making my life easier as President: Donna my able vice-president for her support and making her home available for committee meetings; Peter for his unrelenting drive to help build the REBs membership and encouraging people to join, and also for manning the stall week after week; Ngaire, treasurer, for keeping REBs solvent and also for helping man (or lady) the stall; Michael our capable secretary and for his help in manning the stall, and Doug for his help on the committee, and more recently Katie for her help on the committee. And a big thanks to Daniel for his help at the market every week. As REBs continues to grow we are constantly thinking of ways to help get the members involved, as often we are only names on a piece of paper and quite often never get to meet unless we Trade with each other. So one idea has been to hold more social events: one such event was a Soup Evening at the Environment Centre which was a success. We will hold another toward the end of the year. This will be a BBQ at my place to christen my new deck. Another change you will have noticed is that the REBS newsletter is now called the River Exchange and Barter System News Exchange, with interesting articles and happenings as well as the ads making the newsletter interesting reading. Thank you to Merania Karauria who has stepped in as our new-look News Exchange editor and graphic designer Nathanael Scurr who redesigned our mast head. If you have an interesting story or information you would like to share with the membership, please contact Merania: [email protected] . She would like to hear WHAT’S UP @ REBS? Who is Thomas Greco? He's a director of the Community Information Resource Centre and helped establish the Tucson Traders currency in his home town in southern Arizona, and consulted on many others. Thomas is a former engineer, entrepreneur and professor of business and spent 20 years studying money, banking and community currency systems around the world and throughout history. His book is a fundamental look at money, both the legal tender and the innovative forms that have been developed to promote local currencies in communities around the world. Money explains the mysteries and realities of currency, interest and barter and reveals the alarming fragility of the world's fragile financial system. It is also a practical and inspirational how-to manual for creating a vibrant and effective community currency system. Money is the truth about how money is created and what it actually represents, why we're in debt, how the financial system is structured to inevitably transfer wealth from the poorto the rich and – how to start a financial revolution in your local community. In the foreword Vicki Robin wrote: Having new road maps for healthy money in a healthy world isas vital to our souls as food, air, and water are to our bodies... .Money is a fascinating account of how money and commerce could work for our deeper values of justice, caring, community, and theEarth. I have not read the book in its entirety –it is more an oracle. At the moment I'm reading about interest.. Thomas says the present official monetary regime is founded onthe charging of interest which creates an instability in the system and leads to economic inequities. Most of what today is called “interest” is actually usury. Thomas says three of the world's great religious traditions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, all have prohibitions against the practice of usary. But of these, only Islam today makes an issue of it. “My arguments against usary and interest are not religious or ideological, but economic and practical.” In earlier chapters of Money Thomas showed that the foundation of our monetary system on interest- bearing debt creates a cancerous growth in debt which in turn leads to a “growth imperative” for the entire economy which causes both ecological devastation and social decay. Thomas says he believes it would be generally beneficial if we worked toward economic and financial arrangements in which interest was minimised. Most important, he says, is that we establish an exchange (monetary) system that avoids the imposition of interest on the medium of exchange at its creation. He said he believed that this might be done without resorting to legal prohibitions . “The objective of economic equity can be achieved by menas of better monetary and financial arrangements that are voluntarily applied.”

Understanding andCreating Alternatives

to Legal TenderMoney

by Merania Karauria

REBS is one of 23 exchange systems that isoperating in New Zealand.

We just have to look at Thomas Greco'sUnderstanding and Creating Alternatives toLegal Tender Money to see why these systemscontinue to sprout.

I met Thomas when he visited Whanganui lastyear, brought here by Laurence Boomert when theEnvironment Centre was in residence on TaupoQuay.

Thomas dedicates his book to the champions ofjustice, equity and freedom, everywhere.

It is a prescriptive book that details in three parts:Monetary Realities and Official Illusions,Complementary Currencies, Past and Present, and Monetary Transformation and CommunityEmpowerment.

Who is Thomas Greco? He's a director of theCommunity Information Resource Centre andhelped establish the Tucson Traders currency inhis home town in southern Arizona, andconsulted on many others.

His book is a fundamental look at money, both thelegal tender and the innovative forms that havebeen developed to promote local currencies incommunities around the world.

Money explains the mysteries and realities ofcurrency, interest and barter and reveals thealarming fragility of the world's fragile financial

system.

It is also a practical and inspirational how-to manualfor creating a vibrant and effective communitycurrency system.

Money is the truth about how money is created andwhat it actually represents, why we're in debt, howthe financial system is structured to inevitably transferwealth from the poor to the rich and – how to start afinancial revolution in your local community.

In the foreword Vicki Robin wrote: Having new roadmaps for healthy money in a healthy world is as vitalto our souls as food, air, and water are to ourbodies... .Money is a fascinating account of howmoney and commerce could work for our deepervalues of justice, caring, community, and theEarth.
