FFRROOMM TTHHEE PPOOTTEENNTTAATTEENobles and Ladies, I’d like to

start with a public apology toBarb Cook and Fred Wulff forthe delay in getting my article inthis month. I wanted to hold offuntil we returned from our SaltLake City Caravan.

We have another memory toadd to our 2010 book and thiscomes from our recent trip toSalt Lake City and our ShrineHospital. What a wonderful fa-

cility and experience we had. While we only had 14 peo-ple travel with us, it was a pleasure spending time withthem, as many don’t travel on a regular basis and wegot to learn more about each other. We also had 10from Pueblo, CO and Al Kaly Shrine join us for our trip. They brought wheel chairs down and joined us for allof our activities. We thank Ill. Sir Steve Jordan for join-ing us. We shared hospitality and had a great time.

A special thanks to Bill Wright for setting up the trip.He did a fantastic job and had everything well organ-ized, including rooms, transportation, meals and thehospital visit. Our hospital staff is 2nd to none and ourpatients are the best. We learned about the Un-limb-ited program that provides camping experience toyoung people who’re either missing limbs or have lim-ited use of their limbs. They help them experience fish-ing, kayaking, skiing, and many other experiences.Best of all it allows these young people to get togetherand share experiences, feelings and reactions to manydifferent things, so they can better cope with life. It’svery similar to the burn camps and is a wonderful pro-gram, and something we don’t know about withoutgoing to see them.

A special highlight after Saturday evening dinner atRodizio’s Restaurant, which had all the meat you couldeat carved at your table, was the visit by 2 of our Shrinepatients. They shared dinner with us then came back tothe hospitality room for a visit. One young man sharedhis experience of having no arms and his experiencewith our hospital. He even demonstrated how he putshis prosthetics on by himself and how they work. It wasan amazing presentation and even better that we got tospend time with him and his family. We were all trulyblown away.

I know we all worked together with our hospital, thehospital staff, the patients, the El Zaribah and Al KalyNobles to put together a wonderful weekend. Jerry San-ford and Lady Lorie even drove in from Wyoming tospend time with us and brought toys and gifts for the

hospital, along with helping to stock the hospitalitysuite. Keith Seplak, the first arrival, got busy setting upfor those of us getting there later. Truly, a teamwork ef-fort and thanks to everyone. We hopemore of you will go in the future!

Since our last article was written, much has happened including a GolfMarathon. We had 18 Nobles, 1 Ma-sonic Candidate, 1 Shrine Lady and afew of our children come out and beinvolved. It was a long day, with eachperson playing 100 holes of golf forthe pledges made to support our or-ganization. We did very well for our1st attempt at such an event. As thelast one off the course, I can say forcertain that this is NOT easy. It is,however, fun to spend time with thoseothers who participated as we laughed a lot, made funof each other, shared stories of our successes, our de-feats, and other stuff that just couldn’t be made up. Allin the name of fund-raising for El Zaribah and with mostof the donations coming from people outside our or-ganization. Again, we’re working together to make a dif-ference.

We also had the chance to visit our LA Hospital inAug. at the Board of Governors meeting. They did anice job presenting information about what’s going onat that hospital. While I’ve mentioned this a couple oftimes, the Board’s working hard on determining if we’llbuild a new facility, retrofit the current one, or what-ever’s necessary to continue our presence in this com-munity and area. Considering the challenges they haveand timelines to be meet, you should say thanks toBoard members Doc Hayes and Jim Grone, for the workand time they put in. They deserve it.

We’re rapidly approaching our Fall Ceremonial inLake Havasu. We’re looking forward to a good time, bringing in new members and creating even more mem-ories to cherish. We’ll honor the memory of Vince Cas-tronovo by holding the Ceremonial in his name. Heworked hard for the Shrine and loved the organizationand certainly left behind a trail worthy of following.

There are many more events taking place and I en-courage you to look at the calendar on our website tosee what’s going on. Please attend those things thatinterest you and stay involved. Your support is neededto keep us going.Yours in the faith,Phil Houghton Potentate 2010

Congratulations to Ill. Sir Jack Garrett for another great Cir-cus. It was one of the best and biggest we’ve had. For thosewho weren’t able to be there, you really missed seeing Ill. SirJack’s portable office.

Everyone enjoyed getting out of the heat to spend the week-end in Show Low and Pinetop. We had a great Parade and sawa lot of old cars and hot rods, then had the White MountainShrine Club OV at a wonderful steak house.

A lot of you will be going on the Pote’s trip and we knowyou’ll have a wonderful time. See you when you get back.

Don’t forget the Motorcycle Ride and also the Mounted Pa-trol Fall Ride.

Flu shots will be at the Shrine again on Oct 12th from 10-12:30. Please come by and get shot.

We’re really looking forward to being in Lake Havasu againfor the Fall Ceremonial. Everyone always has a super week-end.

On the road again. For those of you who’d like to spend aFULL weekend, please join us for Mohave Shrine Club OV onthe 23rd and then travel to Prescott for the Prescott Valley, Brad-shaw Mountain and Yavapai Shrine Club OV the next day.On Oct. 31st we’ll be having a Pork BBQ, Halloween costume

contest and games at the Shrine. Bring your pre-carved pump-kins for judging.

BOY, I’M TIRED JUST WRITING THIS!I guess that’s all for now. Stay safe.

Welcome back, Nobles and Ladies! What an amazing yearwe’ve had so far! But as great as it’s been, I’d like to concentrateon what the future looks like in the Shrine.During our Imperial Session this summer, the delegates voted

to change the Shrine’s official name to Shriners International. This change is part of the Shrine’s rebranding and complementsour new recruiting websites www.beashrinernow.com andwww.shrinersvillage.org. Even the Imperial First Lady’s projectis “Membership, the heartbeat of the Shrine.”

As you can see, Imperial’s putting a lot of effort into mem-bership. They’re giving us all the tools we need to revitalize ourShrine. This year, for the first time in memorable history, wehave the opportunity for a positive membership gain! This isan amazing accomplishment, but we still have some work to do.Lake Havasu Ceremonial is just around the corner and we canstill do a “Cold Sands” if need be. “Together we can” accom-plish this achievement.

But we can’t stop there. “Together we can” become mentorsfor our new Nobles and encourage them to be actively involved.

You can sign up to be a mentor on the www.shrinersvillage.org website.

As you can see, our future is bright, and “Together we can”make our fraternity better than ever before! Yours in the Faith, Gerry Massey, Oriental Guide

Greetings from the bucket closet. Happily, I have all goodnews regarding our restricted accounts and our General Funds. Please come to a Stated Meeting or into the Office to see and ap-preciate what we have.

The Divan’s been very frugal with your money and our Hos-pital Chairman has also done a great job of holding down costs. We’re looking for guest speakers to liven up our Stated Meet-

ings and once again, we extend our invitation to send in or callin any suggestions you may have for the betterment of Shrine-dom.

Equally important, please keep your eyes open for a goodpotential Mason/Shriner. Our Membership Committee Chairmansaid it very well when he said, “each and every one of us aremembers of the Membership Committee.” Get involved.

Try to make it to as many events as you can, your presenceand participation is what make us successful! The Bucket Man

Nobles, well, the summer of 2010 isover and everything is back to normal.Clubs and Units are again holding theirmeetings and the Red Fez is now openalmost every night. As you all know, the CornFest and the

Shrine Circus were huge successes thisyear. All our fellow Nobles who partici-pated in making these venues the suc-cess they were should be congratulated.

A lot of hard work goes into these events. We completed the first, but certainly not the last, 100 Hole

Golf Marathon endeavor. Several Nobles and guests played ahundred holes of golf in one day and in 100+ degree tempera-tures. They all went out and got outside sponsors and I’ve beentold the net for the General Fund will be sizeable. Great job, guys and thanks, Tom, for getting this started!

El Zaribah Shrine is making plans to send the monthly Arabian Tales viaemail to those members who request it.

This will speed the delivery of the monthly publication and help the

Temple manage it’s expenses. If you’re interested in this program, call the Office at 602-231-0300 to sign up. Thank You

The Night of the Child is well on its way and by all indica-tions it will be another huge success this year. However, yourparticipation is very much needed.

We’re again in the process of developing the 2011 Budgetand Tom Calvin’s goal is to be able to present the completedbudget at the February Stated Meeting. More on financial num-bers as we get further into the process.

The Arabian Tales is now on our Shrine website, www.el-zaribah.org, and it’s my understanding that you’re ableto read the magazine page by page, the same way you read thepaper version. Nobles please give this a try for a few months and then if you

like it this way and are willing to forgo the written copy, it will en-able us to cut our delivery costs down significantly. We can andwill email anyone who wishes to receive it in that manner. Please let the office or members of the Divan know your feel-ings. Yours in the Faith, Paul Reynolds, Recorder

It seems like such a short time ago theonly refreshment available while workingthe Shrine Circus was to sneak away to the

south side of the Equidome and visit the motor home of Jim andJudy Hoover, Temple Guard.

Judy’s wonderful chili and other snacks were always a hit.Getting away from greasepaint and the roar of the crowd for afew minutes was great.

Now, the Temple Guard and others who stay at “The West40” have morphed this break time into a relaxing, efficient socialgathering with food and drink for all the hard working Noblesand Ladies. The people who put this event together deserve aHUGE thank you from all of us. THANK YOU.

WOW! WSA was such asuccess thanks to our Poten-tate Phil and a lot of the Past

Potentates and their teams who spent longhours organizing the many events.

The Band had a small concert to kick off the opening on Fri-day morning. Then Friday evening we had a short concert bythe pool, with Ed White kicking off the Nightshirt Parade whilethe Band played “When The Saints Go Marching In” which re-ally stirred things up!Saturday morning we played in the Parade down Mill Avenue

to a small but really happy crowd. Potentate Phil and lots of others gave us Kudos for the work

we did to make WSA a great time.On another note, thank you all so much for the cards and

calls during my recent illness. It made me remember what agreat organization we belong to.

We’re ready to roll again for the rest of the year! Remember,it’s music that keeps us young. J.

The Culinary Unitlost one of its mostdedicated and beloved

brethren to the Black Camel Aug. 25th. LarryKelly was a native Arizonan and a long time

member of El Zaribah and the Culinary Unit. He was ever pres-ent on the serving line and always had a good word and warmgreeting for everyone he encountered. Larry was always up-beat and never complained or criticized the actions of others. He cherished his relationship with El Zaribah and the CulinaryUnit, and he’ll be fondly remembered.

Please try to make it to our regular Unit meeting October21st at 7:00 pm. This is a busy time of year and there’s a fullagenda of items that need the input of all.

The CIF Barbeque is set for Halloween Day, October 31st.Culinary members will be preparing and cooking the meat theday before, Saturday morning starting at 7:00 am. We’ll servethe meals on Sunday, and we should start preparing the serv-ing lines about 9:30 am. We’ll be cooking and serving pork thistime, and proceeds will go to the General Fund.Regular events to remember include the Unit and Club meet-

ing the 1st Tuesday, the Stated Meeting the 2nd Wednesday andthe Culinary meeting on the 3rd Thursday. The Culinary Unitworks all three of these functions, so please plan to attend allof them you can if you’re a Culinary member.

Plan to attend the Fall Ceremonial at Lake Havasu the week-end of October 16th if you can make it, and don’t neglect to voteNov. 2nd.

Also, keep Saturday, November 13th open for The Night ofthe Child, and Friday, Dec. 31st open for the Fiesta Bowl Paradeand other festivities in the Red Fez Room immediately after-ward.

Over the yearsthings changewithin the Shrine

and stories are told. Some of the best stories are ofevents that happen to others. We challenge other

Units to share some of their great tales. Our tale this month is about Ceremonials at the old Shrine

Temple, downtown Phoenix. The Old Shrine Temple is now theAZ State Mineral Museum. The auditorum had a balconyaround it and during the Ceremonials, the Director’s Staff hadseveral stunts for the 2nd Section which used the balcony. Onewas a slide that went from the balcony down to the first floor. As a Shrine Novice I rode the slide and let me tell you, it really

got your heart going in a fun way. Well, in about 1983, we weregetting complaints from the Nobility that the slide wasn’t fastenough, that is to say the Novices weren’t going FAST enoughdown the slide. So at a work party, the Director’s Staff got somepaste wax for cars and polished up that old slide and then wetested it. It seemed to work pretty good. What we hadn’tplanned for was multiple people sliding down the slide andpolishing it with the gunny sacks they were given to ride on.

Well, at the next Ceremonial, we pulled out the slide and setit up and started using it. It worked great for the first fewNovices and then the FUN really started! Those Novices werecoming down the slide, then hitting the wooden floor andpolishing it. Before long we had to shut it down because theNovices were bounching off the wall on the other side of thehall and we were afraid someone would get hurt. But the lookin their eyes was great and boy, did the Nobles enjoy the rides. When we moved to our current location we had to get rid of theslide but the fun it provided still lives on in our stories.

Our next dinner meeting is October 27th with social hour at5:30, dinner about 6:45 and the Unit meeting following. Hope tosee you there with some of your own tales of the Shrine. A Red Coverall

the flag salute to be maintained while National Flags are dis-played during the National Anthems and as they are posted.Failure to hold the salute during the entire Flag Presentation isa lack of courtesy for our Flag as well as the other NationalFlags. Let’s encourage our members to be courteous of ourflag during Flag presentations.

The Legion of Honor in the WSA Parade

Well, by the timeyou read this, we’llhave hosted the

2010 “WE RIDE SO KIDS CAN WALK” Treas-ure Hunt Run on Saturday, October 2nd. Wechecked in at Johnny Rockets (Westgate),

rode about 100 miles and stopped along the way to play a gameof “Treasure/Scavenger Hunt.” With valuable prizes, raffleitems and a great time at the Red Fez (thanks to all the volun-teers), we sure are grateful to all who helped make this a VERYBIG EVENT. I’m sure we’ll have many interesting photos in fu-ture issues.

As always, the El Zaribah Motorcycle Unit (EZMC) will bemeeting the 2nd Thursday of each month (Oct. 14th, Nov. 11thand Dec. 8th) at 7:00 pm and look forward to welcoming all ourmembers who were “back home” for the summer months. Howdyya’ll, hopethis finds

you well. The big item on this month’s notesis the Fall Ride coming up very soon, Oct. 14thto 17th. Chances are it’s not too late to getyou in, but you have to hurry ‘cause we have

to get the count in for the caterer and such. As I’ve said before, you only think you’ve had a chance to

enjoy Mother Nature until you take the time to visit the beauti-ful EZ Ranch in Cordes Junction. The splendor is only out-shone by the lavish hospitality Scott Smith extends to us all.

To add to that, we have all kinds of activities to entertain alldesires, topped off with a great catering company to satisfythose hunger pangs. Come on up with us, you’ll be glad youdid. After that we have a little rest period before our next function.

Don’t let the Holidays slip up on you without planning on beingat our Christmas Dinner Party in December.

Till we meet again, Vaya Con Dios.

Once again, we worked hard and got a huge amount of en-joyment while arranging and providing food for all the Shrinersand Ladies at the Circus. The motor home corral is growingevery year. Our thanks to every Noble and Lady who stayed thenights and helped with the food and menu. in good shape (for the shape we’re in). In casesome don’t know, one of our Past Presidentsbecame a pastor, so congrats to Bill Stewart.

I’m sure he’ll be a good one. Moving on, we’ve been fortunate to gain 2 new members.

Welcome to our Unit! And by moving on, I mean they have 1new tractor-trailer and 1 monster truck, so now we have threeand a half tractor-trailers.

It was sure refreshing to see old members at our Sept. meet-ing. Thanks guys, much appreciated for your support.

Once again a great turnout for the Payson Parade, and as al-ways, it was fun - short but fun. Pinetop, I’m very proud to say,was another great showing for Transportation. The folks withvehicles are sure getting them out, and what a difference itmakes, showing our support to the Shrine and our Potentate.

For those who worked the Circus ticket booth, a sincereTHANK YOU. Remember when we had to build our own? Andwe thank the Clowns and Chris Olson for their part at the Cir-cus. I know they had fun, and it’s always a pleasure to haveMax.

Watch your Parade calendar for Oct., we have quite a fewcoming up, all are great fun. Jim has all the info for them. We’ve made a great effort to update the membership list and

it will be proofed at the Oct. meeting. This will be current goinginto next year, so if someone calls to update, please help, itwould be appreciated.

One other note to keep in mind is the Fiesta Bowl Parade. We’ve arranged to have a group picture with a photographer atthe church prior to the Parade line up, so mark that time andwe’ll keep you all posted.

As a safety measure in Parades, try to stay in your Unit, soif something breaks down, at least we can get to you to finishup, not leave you behind.Yours in Faith, John

The Drum& BugleCorps per-

formed at the intermission of the 3:00 pm SaturdayShrine Circus performance. We had a good timeplaying for the crowd at the Circus and hope theyenjoyed hearing us. We then traveled to Show Lowthe following weekend for their OV weekend. Weperformed around the Hospitality Suite Friday nightand Saturday at the White Mountain SC OV.

The Lake Havasu Ceremonial is upon us. The Drum & BugleCorps plans to be very active during that event in October. Youshould see us performing multiple times throughout the week-end. The entire weekend promises to be a Shrine event to re-member.

The Joint OV of the Drum & Bugle Corps plus the Patrol,Roadrunners, Band, DeMolay, Sandbaggers and possibly theOriental Band and Computer Club will be held Friday evening,November 5, at 6:00 pm. We’d like to see a lot of guests thereto join us in our celebration, especially the other Unit & Clubheads. Contact Jack Garrett or the Head of any of those Unitsand Clubs for additional information.

Last month I shared some information about our Club for-mation. This month I’d like to talk about a couple of our per-formances. After forming as a group, our first performance atthe Shrine was when we were asked by Ill. Sir Otto Loven toplay at the Shrine Installation of Officers on Jan. 8, 1993. We re-ceived lots of applause though I’m sure it was because we wereso new to El Zaribah. After our 3 numbers, we couldn’t play therequested encore, as that was all we knew.

The event that stands out in our early history was beingasked by Imp. Sir Tony Bukey to lead the Imperial Parade inDenver, CO, July 3-4, 1994. We had 25 members present whomarched and played in that long, long Parade. I believe we had23 who finished it! It was a great honor for us to represent ElZaribah by leading that Imperial Parade. A picture of our Clubin that Parade is on the West wall in the Band Room for anyonewho’d like to view it. Alto Bugle

Hi there, Noblesand Ladies. I apolo-gize for missing the

past several issues, but there really wasn’t toomuch going on but the heat here in Bullhead City.

A lot of work’s been done as far as maintenance of our build-ing. The carpet in the dining area was removed and replacedwith tile. This will make for easier clean up as there’s often a lotof food spilled during dinners. Speaking of dinners, we’ve hadsome super meals and the turnout’s been great. Dinners servedby the Shrine Club, as well as the Blue Lodge, have been su-perb. The word’s evidently gotten out, as the number attendingthese feasts have been steadily increasing. The Shrine ClubPres. as well as the WM of the Blue Lodge have been goingabove and beyond to see the food’s the best quality. Please at-tend our meetings, as the meals and camaraderie’s really great. We were all glad the Tales was given such a high rating at the

Convention. The people who work on this are the BEST anddeserve your thanks. It’s always a pleasure to work with them. There are several Parades coming up which our minis will at-

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN . . .ORIENTAL GUIDE MUST BE SELECTED WISELY

When the members of a Shrine Temple elect a Noble to the Office of Oriental Guide, they are virtuallystarting that Noble through the Divan Line on the assumption that he will prove qualified for and worthy of advancement to the high office of Illustrious Potentate.Hence it is quite evident that the nomination for Oriental Guide should be based on a thorough and accurate evaluation of character, ability, prestige, interest and experience.A Noble can be a good fellow, a hard worker, and a loyal Shriner . . . and yet lack the qualificationswhich make a good Potentate. Unless a Noble is fully qualified for the job, he is unfair to both himselfand his Temple in seeking the Office or in permitting his fellow Nobles to support and promote hiscandidacy. Each Shrine Temple needs and requires able, high-type leadership. The normal starting point of thatleadership is the Office of Oriental Guide. The following checklist may prove helpful in evaluating potential candidates for the Office of Oriental Guide. However, no thinking man would be so naive orpresumptuous as to believe that any one Noble could embody all of the talents and qualifications setforth in this checklist.Nevertheless, the list has practical value . . . for self-evaluation by the Noble whose ultimate aspirationis the Office of Illustrious Potentate . . . and for advance evaluations of potential candidates by the voting members.Leadership Understanding beforehand with wife & familyExecutive Ability Possess Social GracesBusiness Sense Financially SecureCommunity Standing & Influence Energy & VitalityWell Poised Free to devote ample timeGood Health DiplomacyStage Presence Good habits & Moral CharacterCompetent Organizer & Promoter Interest in the Shrine & Masonry in TotalAbility to give & get cooperation Capable of delegating

Capable of building good Public and Masonic RelationsMany Temples have placed definite limitations upon their progress and standing in the community asa result of hasty, ill-considered judgment in connection with nominations for the Office of OrientalGuide. Every Noble is a good Noble . . . but it does not necessarily follow that every Noble is fitted tomeet the rigorous demands imposed upon Divan Officers and the Potentates. So let’s be fair, honest and wise in the all-important matter of electing to Office only men who are eminently qualified for the job! We all know that with honor comes responsibility. And while there ishigh honor associated with a Divan Office, the ensuing responsibilities entail a lot of time-consuming,energy-consuming WORK!We are genuinely grateful that our Temple has been favored with sincere, honest, able and devoted lead-ership through its elected Officers. However, eternal vigilance must be wisely and thoughtfully exer-cised by the voting membership in order to perpetuate a high caliber of leadership.

As everyone iswell aware by now,we lost our Caddy

That’s a tall task.I was asked to write this one article because within the Sand-

We started the Shriners Golf Classic together in 1997. Asmall little tournament at the time that he and I said we’d loveto see grow into something as we downed a cold beer after thatfirst tournament. We also started the Sandbaggers Golf Club in1999. Not only the governing body of the Shriners Golf Classic, but a Club to promote golf and have a fun time within El Zaribah.

I know that whoever takes over writing this article will begintelling you about the 2011 tournament soon. Don would havewanted that. It’s hard to believe that the CornFest, Hospital Caravan andthis year’s Circus are over. Kudos to Mark Lueck for a job welldone with the CornFest. Bill Wright’s to be congratulated fororganizing a great Hospital Caravan. Once again Illustrious SirJack Garrett, P.P. has surpassed even his own past efforts asCircus Chairman. It always amazes me that when any job, bigor small, needs to be done, there’s a Shriner out there some-where who is willing to step up and do whatever’s necessaryto get the job done.

IMPORTANT: Recently it’s come to my attention that manyShriners and Shrine Clubs keep hospital applications on handfor quick use. If you or your Club are still using an applicationwhich pre-dates our current revision dated 5-11-10, please de-stroy those earlier revisions. Due to changes in HIPPA regula-tions, it’s actually illegal to use ANY of our previous revisionsof the application Form 1036. You can get an updated Form1036 from this office by calling 602-231-0188 or on the www.el-zaribah.org website.

FYI - El Zaribah Shrine now sponsors 2096 patients from allover Arizona and north/central Mexico. This figure is even moreimpressive when you figure in the fact that we’re accomplish-ing this with a smaller membership base and in a depressedeconomy. David Scrimager, Hospital Chairman

UN-LIMB-ITED: AMPUTEE TEENS FIND A PLACE TO FIT IN WITH RAFTING TRIP TO GREEN RIVEr

Surrounded by red rock & blue sky, Nathaniel Carter smiles at hisnew found feeling of inclusion as he floats down the Green River.“Other than in the hospital, this is the first time I’ve met others miss-ing a limb, & it makes me feel like, hey, it’s not just me,” the 14-year-old says as the raft churns through the water. From the depths of Desolation Canyon on this hot July day, it would

appear that Carter & the 14 teenagers with him are like any other youthgroup that treks here for adventure. And in most ways Carter & hisfriends are normal teenagers. But in one key respect, they’re unique— each is an amputee.

They’ve come here from around the country for the 3rd Annual Un-Limb-ited Amputee Whitewater Rafting Camp, which is sponsored byShriners Hospital for Children.

The camp is the brainchild of Matt Lowell, a physical therapist atShriners, who recognized that when amputees became teenagers, theyoften needed more intensive intervention, treatment & attention. Tohelp fill that need, Shriners, under Lowell’s direction, started a wintercamp 7 years ago where kids learn to ski & snowboard.

From the winter camp’s success & Lowell’s previous work at theUniv. of Utah Intermountain Burn Clinic, which has run a similar campdown this same stretch of river, the Un-Limb-ited Amputee camp wasborn.

The 6-day, 89-mile river-rafting trip starts at Sand Wash & ends atGreen River. The camp consists of teenagers ages 12 to 18, mostlyfrom the Intermountain region, but guest campers from around thecountry are also invited. Burn Camp & Holiday Expeditions providethe river guides, gear & food, & Shriners & its donors provide direct do-nations to the camp, resulting in a very minimal application fee. Mosttimes, if there’s financial need, that fee’s waived.

The fact that Maj. John Wesley Powell, the first man to navigate theGreen & Colorado rivers in 1869, was missing his arm from an explo-sion in the Civil War wasn’t something the organizers of the Un-Limb-ited Camp had in mind, but it’s provided a great role model & aninspirational piece of history to share with the campers.“Teaching a child to walk or use a prosthetic isn’t the goal. It’s sim-

ply a step in the process,” Lowell said. “Our goal is to get them backinto life, pursing their dreams, goals & aspirations. Having them walk10 feet down the hallway in a clinic isn’t life.”Marina Ivie, 23, is 1 of 2 “counselors in training” at this year’s camp.

Ivie lost her leg in an automobile accident near Payson 9 years ago. While recovering at University Hospital, two amputees stopped by herroom & talked to her about what it would be like to live with one leg.One of the amputees was a teenage boy. The other was a nurse. See-ing their success gave Ivie hope.

Last year, Ivie quickly learned the impact she could also have onother amputees when she picked up a camper from Tampa at the air-port. Ivie recalls that after introductions they sat to wait for another ar-rival & started talking. When the teen learned that Ivie was married &had a son she “kind of stepped back, got this look on her face & said‘Wait, you’re married?’ The girl couldn’t believe it. “Someone lovesyou & married you?” the girl asked again. And again Ivie said yes.“With your leg like that?” the girl asked. Ivie replied, “Yes, because heloves me for me & the person I am, & my leg doesn’t make any differ-ence to him.”

Listening to the young girl’s questions was bittersweet. “She did-n’t know. She thought she was the freak & that no one was going tolike her because she wasn’t the perfect model, that she didn’t haveeverything there,” Ivie recalls. “But she had more in her heart, & that’swhat she had to learn — she had more to give inside.”

In almost every way, the campers on the Green River seem like anyother teenagers trying to navigate the choppy waves of adolescence.About half have been without a limb since birth. Others lost limbs toaccidents, cancer or, in one case, infected chickenpox. As 15-year-oldJessica Nordstrom explains, “I think I’m blessed because I was bornwith what I have, because if later on in life I had to get my leg ampu-tated, I don’t think I’d adapt to it as well.”

What all share is that they’re different — at an age when conform-ity is the norm. As Koyla Arnold, the oldest of the campers, explains,“When I was younger, everybody was saying, ‘Oh man, you’re differ-ent, you’re different,’ & I knew there were other amputees, but when Icame in contact with Shriners, I knew I wasn’t different — just unique.”

Take 15 teenagers with that uniqueness in common, many of whomhave never been camping or unplugged from their cell phones oriPods, mix in the grandeur of Desolation Canyon, & you have the in-

gredients for what campers refer to as a “life-changing experience.”After walking off the bus at Sand Wash where the rafts are ready to

load, Lucas Slusher, who’d never left Ohio, simply stares at his sur-roundings & exclaims to the others, “I don’t know about you, but I couldstay here all day & look at that rock.”

Each day’s filled with water fights, kayaking, swimming down theriver & white water rapids. Afternoon is generally some type of craft orhike. At night, everyone gathers in a circle, sometimes around a camp-fire, to share the highs & lows of each day. The lows tend to fade withthe current, quickly banished & forgotten.

One high for all was hiking about a mile up a steep canyon to an oldmoonshine still. For the adults who help run the camp, it’s hard toimagine a more inspiring sight than watching 15 amputees climb, manyfalling along the way, but continuing with perseverance until reachingthe top. “I don’t know if they realize it, but they’re the ones that aresuch an inspiration to me,” said Rick Coriell, a guide with Holiday Ex-peditions. “I don’t know how else to explain it, other than it’s kind ofunbelievable. I‘m so used to going up these canyons & just not think-ing about the little things. They give me so much more than I will ever, ever, ever get or will be able to give.”

After the hike back down the canyon, the campers share the hu-morous side of traversing life without a limb. Kristine Littlefield, 13,from Centerville, laughs while admitting that she “used to shark a lot,”joking about a fabricated story of having her leg ripped off by the jawsof a shark. A collective, knowing “yeah” comes from the group.

Logan Spencer recalled how he was walking through the Wal-Martparking lot when a car drove past him, he fell down, took his leg off &started screaming. A chorus of “Oh, that’s bad” comes from the groupamid the laughter. Daniellia Jimenez talked about her leg falling offwhile doing cartwheels & a couple of campers add, “Yeah, mine did, too.”At night, under the stars, there are more serious discussions - ques-

tions about myoelectric arms, limb transplants, phantom pains & resid-ual limb pains. Several campers talked about what it feels like whenpeople stare at you. “I just wish they’d ask,” said Luke Lish, who at 17is a high school wrestling champion in Idaho.

Littlefield, a competitive butterfly swimmer, says when people stareat her foot when she doesn’t have her prosthetic on, she smiles at them& waves with her foot & toes, which are where a knee would normallybe (she has a Van Nes rotationplasty amputation).

Jessica Nordstrom, who lost her left leg at birth, admits she’d neverreally worn a skirt or a dress before. “After listening to all the othercampers & coming to this camp, I’ve thought a lot about it & I’m goingto buy my first dress or skirt — I’m not sure which. I’m pretty stoked,”she said.

Ivie, the camp counselor, offers some dating tips to the teenagersmissing a leg: “If they can’t get comfortable with your leg, they aren’tgood enough for you.”

Lowell’s been fortunate in seeing quick, big results from the camphe started 3 years ago. “We get letters from teachers & parents whowitnessed changes in the kids over the years that have been prettyamazing,” he said. “We’ve seen kids with significant confidence is-sues where their own best friends in school didn’t even know they wereamputees & they’ll come back to camp the next year wearing shorts, talking about trying out for various sports teams, going to the dance &participating in activities that before camp they were a little too intimi-dated to pursue.”

As much as the campers get out of the experience, the volunteers, guides & counselors get that & more from the river. “I won’t lie to you,”said firefighter Mitch King, who’s volunteered on many burn camps &all of the Un-Limb-ited camps. “I’m just selfish — I get so much out ofit, I keep coming back.”

Lacie Tye, the camp nurse, agrees. “Working in the hospital, I don’tever get to see kids get well,” she says. “So to see these kids, when Iknow what it’s like for them to be in the hospital & what they’ve beenthrough, come out & do absolutely everything, it’s just amazing.”

Much is shared: Sunsets, rolling thunder, lightning strikes, bighornsheep sightings, the thrill of the rapids & the stark beauty of a canyonthat in some places is deeper than the Grand Canyon. But nothingcompares to the sharing of each other’s lives.

The river’s a journey. At first, many campers are simply trying to fitinto where they feel most comfortable. By the middle of the trip, all arefriends, sharing intimate details about their lives. By the end, a lot ofthe teens say they’ve made friends for life, even though they may neversee each other again. While saying goodbye, emotions are over-whelming. Long embraces are exchanged, often with very few words, other than “I love you.” Tears flow like a river.

2010 “The Night of the Child”Our Committee Chairmen and members continue to meet on

a monthly basis with a lot of great decisions and ideas comingout. Each year we learn from the previous year. We’ll have theCasino again and it will be a little different (you have to comesee and enjoy). Along with the Casino we’ll have live and silentauction, raffles and blitzes. In addition, remember the wonder-ful dinner included with your ticket.

Our goal this year is to increase the value of the items wehave. If you attended last year, we had some great items butthis year we want to top those.Again, it’s not a night of many speeches but a night of a cou-

ple of short speeches, great dinner, video slide show on whatwe do, lots of fun and a goal to help raise money for our ShrineHospitals from outside the Shrine. We want folks outside theShrine to understand WHAT we do and WHY we do what we dofor the kids. We know we have the passion; we need more peo-ple helping us and understanding what and why we do what wedo.

We’ll have Sarah Cramer back to sing the National Anthemand three (3) other Shriner kids with us in attendance. W.Steven Martin will be our emcee for the evening. Now the guestspeaker, we can’t tell you at this time. You’re just going to haveto come see who it is.

The cost for the evening is as follows: $40 Individual ticket (includes 1 meal, doesn’t guarantee whattable you’ll sit at) SOLD OUT, DOING WAIT LIST. $300 Reserved table (includes meals for 8 and works out to$37.50 per person) SOLD OUT, DOING WAIT LIST.

problem this year. We’re sold out of Individual and Reservedtables at this time. We’re doing a wait list. If you’re still inter-ested, get your name on the wait list. If someone cancels, we’llcall you. You can go online to our website to purchase ticketsat www.nightofthechild.org or contact the office. We take Visa,MasterCard, American Express and Discover. If you wish to payby check, you can download the form and send in a check tothe address at the bottom of the form. Along with the applica-tion is a list of names that will be sitting at your table. You don’tneed to fill out the name sheet attached to the application butcan use that for personal use on who’ll be sitting at your table.Don’t wait till the last minute and not be able to get a table. Un-fortunately it happened to some last year. We’re looking for donations for the live and silent auction, raf-

fles and blitz’s. If you can help us in that area, please let usknow. If you also know of a Corporation or company that you’dlike to see attend and purchase a Sponsor table, please let usknow. We have all the information you need. Give anyone onthe committee a call if you need anything. We could really usesome help in this area.

Thank you again for helping make the 2010 “The Night of theChild” a success. Mick Degn, Benefit Chairman [email protected] 602-312-4554
