Kudos to our 1st place winners that were published in the recent Porsche Panorama Sep-tember issue! From concours, autocross, to Re-gion of the Year. You can now purchase the shirt to keep the memory of Region of the Year in a choice of four different colors- please have a look online at the Roadrunner web site so the orders can be placed for those of us that want to enjoy the memory or share it with others. I had the pleasure of joining our long time members Bob Blackwell and Bill Oaks for a drive to the Dixon Apple Orchard on “drive your 356 for Ferry Porsche’s birthday,” September 19th. Since we started on a Saturday, Bob put together the idea to make the pilgrimage to the off-the-beaten- path of Pena Blanca located just above the town of Cochiti. It was lovely drive, with 3 appropriate 356’s- one red, one white, and one blue. I had always heard about the place and was interested to see what it was all about. There were many regulars that showed up all at the same time, but the lines moved quickly enough in as others loaded up quickly with apples and moved out. For me it was well worth the wait, as I found a great source for seasoned apple wood to smoke trout with, as well as the famous Champagne green apples they grow along with 3 other varieties. Special recognition is in order for one of our fellow Roadrunners for his ongoing efforts and donations of carpet cleaning to help our charity- The Barrett Foundation. Michael Galaviz, owner of Four Seasons Cleaning has taken on the task and donated a lot of time and his energy towards

their cause. Thank you Michael for your ongo-ing support beyond the call of duty with a redo of carpet cleaning after they had a water leak prob-lem. Dennis and Joan Ledbetter are in full swing to have the next years Fiesta planned and ready, well in advance. Many thanks to them for holding planning meetings and providing food and bev-erages. Sponsorships/volunteers are wanted for help with our next Viva Fiesta next year. Also on the immediate horizon are annual events held at Bruce Phillips’ lovely home- The Chili Cook Off- not to be missed on October 10th, Followed by the Oktoberfiesta put on at Arroyo Seco by the friendly Carrera Region of the El Paso area held near Deming, N.M. on October 23-25th. As always, thanks to all our participating members and volunteers that makes our club a great one!

Roadrunner Region veterans all know about the annual Chili Cook Off in the fall of every year, but we have quite a few new members who have yet to be initiated into our club ritual!

This year’s event is once again hosted by Bruce Phillips at his wonderful home in High Desert (for the newbies, just a look around the garage is worth it!). The date is Saturday, October 10, 2009...mark your calendars!

The Chili Cook Off is a “pot luck” type of event where everyone brings a dish that includes chili of some type. In the past, we have seen some pretty wacky, yet edible, chili dishes and we expect this year to be just as crazy. Prizes are awarded for the hottest, cheesiest and most creative, just to name a few . The prizes will be unique and surprising! Look for food categories and directions on the Road-runner Website.

If you are a recent addition to the club, this is a great opportunity to meet fellow Porsche enthusiasts in a fun, casual and social setting. We hope you will join us! For more information, call Bruce at 505-821-9218 or write [email protected]

Don’t miss it. This is one of the greatest traditions of the Roadrunner Region!

Is Now Open!

Now’s the time to get in Roadrunner style! We have several items featuring the custom-embroidered Roadrunner logo: polo shirts, denim shirts, twills, and fleece vests. Prices for these items range from $25 for the polo shirts to $35 for the fleece vests.

If you want to lighten up on the layering and just go for a sweatshirt, we have 3 styles to choose from: 1/4-zip black sweatshirts with the Porsche script in small lettering over the left breast, or in larger, out-line lettering across the chest; sweatshirts with the large Porsche crest; or sweatshirts with the Porsche script in outline lettering across the chest. All of the sweatshirts are priced at $30 each.

We are also featuring pins for you and badges for your car. You can order the Roadrunner pin by itself, or order a name badge with the pin on it. The pins are $5 each and the name badges are $10 each. Car badges are $25 each.

And for those wintry days when you don’t want to drive your Porsche in the white, fluffy stuff, pull up a chair by the fire and open up a great book. There’s Fred Puhn’s “How to Make Your Car Handle” and Stephan Wilkinson’s “The Gold-Plated Porsche”.

DS#7+8: Farmington Fun Autocrosses

A weekend of autocrossing in Farmington is always a good weekend and this one lived up to its tradi-tion. Jo Irwin and I co-sponsored both days and this was the first time either one of us had sponsored an autocross. We’ve both helped out quite a bit at other autocrosses but when you’re in charge, there’s a lot more to do! We had themes for both days but that sort of got lost when we were so busy just setting up the courses, etc. Saturday’s theme was “Autocross Rocks!” and all of the turns and features were named after rock bands. Sunday’s theme was “Porsche Racing Legends” and several famous Porsche racers were listed on the course map. When we had our last autocross in Belen, there were some timing equipment problems so I was glad to have Spencer Smith on hand to make sure everything worked properly. Because of the small group (only 18 drivers), we decided to do 8 practice laps in the morning and 6 official timed laps in the afternoon. Although the huge parking lot could have handled 3 cars on the course at the same time, we limited to it to 2 cars because the corner workers needed time to shag cones.

Jo and I were very pleased to have some new autocross drivers among us. Karen Maurer au-tocrossed at Sandia track this summer, but that was in her Audi. This time, she brought her 911 Cab. Karen’s becoming quite the autocrosser and her lap times weren’t too far behind Kirk’s. Another newbie was Jo’s boyfriend, Marc Martin. Marc’s been help-ing us all season with timing and we finally got him behind the wheel. The grin on his face was HUGE! Scott Beckstead came over from Durango and this was only his second autocross, but he did very well by the time Sunday’s laps were done. Scott brought his Boxster on Saturday and his Turbo on Sunday. Someone who’s not new to autocrossing but who is improving every time, is Harvey Dayhoff. Top time of the day on Saturday went to Da-vid Seybold in his Lotus Stalker and fastest Porsche was driven by Billy Sapp. Same thing on Sunday, although Billy finished a little closer to David’s time. The expert Miata drivers were there, and all of them finished with very respectable times. On Sunday afternoon, Brian Leduc claimed that the cones were

“jumping out at him” but it was really a scheme for the corner workers to get more exercise running out to reset the cones. On Saturday night, our Safety Chairperson, Jo Irwin, held a Safety Steward training session at Bill Clark’s office in Farmington. There wasn’t a big crowd, but both Jo and Brian Leduc reviewed several aspects of autocross safety and it will be a training session that will be offered again. We had some good discussions, especially about the chain of command, and handling an emergency situation. Although the crowd over both days wasn’t large, everyone had a great time and it was a safe event. We especially want to thank all the people who pitched in extra to help out. Jude Richey and Margaret Galaviz helped out tremendously with the timing and Jude also collected money for the 50/50 drawing. She also won the drawing and generously donated her winnings back to the Barrett Founda-tion.

Annual Roadrunner Regional Awards

Each year the Roadrunner Region of the Porsche Club of America salutes it’s outstanding mem-bers with a small plaque or trophy to recognize service and achievement. The Roadrunner Region is recognized as a Class III sized region, meaning that it has between 200 and 500 primary mem-bers (not counting associates in this total for classification). Though our region is growing faster and faster and is now over the 300 member level, it is a small group of dedicated and enthusiastic vol-unteers who keep the region going and growing. Voting to recognize those dedicated volunteers is your way to recognize the people who work to allow everyone to have fun. So please take the time to fill out the ballot on the opposite page, cut it out, stick a first-class stamp on it and mail it in.

Better yet, get involved. Going to an event is fun, but getting involved is even funner! Sure it might take a few hours out of your month, but what better way to get to know the group of people who understand your Porsche fixation! There are all kinds of ways — large and small — to get involved in one of the fastest growing and most active PCA regions in the country. Just call or e-mail any of the people whose names and contact info is listed on the Officials marquee on page 3 of this newsletter.

Award Descriptions: here’s what you’re voting for….

Enthusiast of the Year: Awarded to the individual who shows great enthusiasm and dedication to the Region, the Marque, and to the Porsche community.

Kim Harmon Instructor of the Year: Named for one of the great enthusiasts and participants in Region activities in the 80s and early 90s, this award is given to that instructor who demonstrates skills in teaching driving skills and safety to new and experienced participants in the Die Serie.

New Member of the Year: This award has been given sporadically in the Region’s history. It is designed to reward the energy and activity of a member in Region activities over the course of a year by a member who has not previously been active.

Event of the Year: This will be awarded to the organizer of the best event of the year, it can be a drive out, autocross, social event, etc.

Worker of the Year: This award is presented to the individual who is always there helping at any type of event i.e., social, driving etc. not necessarily as a participant but always there to lend a hand.

2010 Candidate BiographiesCandidate for President: Liz Shaw. I joined PCA in early 2002 when I bought my 1993 911. I was living in northern California at the time and I became a member of the Loma Prieta Region. I got involved with the club immediately, going to many of the events they held. For the next two years, I was the Membership Chairperson, plus I was the registrar for a Drivers’ Education group. I also started participating in autocrosses and found that this is one of the things I enjoy most about owning a Porsche. I moved to Santa Fe (my hometown) in 2005 and was fortunate that the timing worked out so that I could attend Fiesta del Porsche. I found out that the Roadrunner Region is similar to Loma Prieta Region in many ways: both Regions have a variety of events for their members and are very active with surrounding Regions. I took over the Roadrunner Region website in late 2005 and have continued main-taining it ever since. I also served as Vice President in 2007, Fiesta Chairperson for 2007,

and President in 2008. I enjoy being so involved in a great club like PCA and I would like to continue with that in 2010 as President. We have a lot of momentum going and I have some ideas on how to get more participation at our events. I would also like to work with the new board and the general membership to start new traditions and to continue helping with all of the events we have throughout the year.

Candidate for President: Tony Richey. I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1963. My family moved to Albuquerque in 1970. Except for a couple years traveling as a professional tennis player, I’ve lived in Albuquerque ever since. I graduated in 1980 from Albuquerque Academy, and got a Finance degree at UNM. I founded my current business eleven years ago. I used to own a 1979 928, and now I own a 1990 964 Cabriolet. I’d like to be the President of the Roadrunner Region for two reasons and to promote two projects: (1) I want to engage members who are less active in the club, and see what we can do to make them more active; and (2) I want to investigate what we can do, and promote those activities, that will make our region the best candidate to host Porsche Parade in 2012. Thank you for your vote.

Candidate for Member-at-Large: Michael Galaviz. I would first like to say thank you for the Member at Large nomination. For those who do not know me, I have been a proud member of PCA for over 10 years. For 22 years I have been a small busi-ness owner. In the past I have been Jr. Civitan District Governor, Sr. Civitan President, and a Board Member of Albuquerque Sales & Economic Growth Association. Many years ago I had a ride in my first 914-6. First amazed then hooked. I’ve owned a 914-4, early 911, and currently my turbo bodied 914-6. Hot rods and muscle cars are nice, but as my fellow members know, nothing feels like a Porsche. Many think that PCA is about Porsches, but when we come together it becomes about the people. Drive outs and gatherings that bring us together, auto-x where competitors give one another advice, helping one another in our personal lives, and bettering the community with service projects. This is a group I would like to give more of myself to.Candidate for Member-at-Large: Russ Kelso. I’ve been a member of PCA since 1990, and involved with the club in some official manor since 1993, I’ve served as VP three times, President twice, Fiesta Chair three times, Chief Driving instructor, Chief Steward and Member at large. I have always been infatuated with Porsche’s and racing as long as I can remember. I was first introduced to engine building by my Father an aircraft mechanic and inspector. He could often be found building small aircraft engines in our garage. My fa-ther helped me build a VW powered off road racer long before I could legally drive and I was hooked on racing. I bought my first Porsche in 1978, it was a 71 914 rust bucket with a bad transaxle. I have been restoring and building Porsches since. My first profession was in the aircraft field thanks to my fathers help. My college degrees are in Health Care and Business. In 1989 I officially started PMCI as a business. I am lucky to be married to my best friend Karen and we have three great kids who have all been raised in and around our club.

Porschemaniacs were in abundance at the 39th Annual Corrales Roundup at Ann and Dave Stinchcomb’s beautiful adobe home under the cottonwoods along the Rio Grande bosque in late August. A record-setting 60 Porsches showed up for the event which usually marks the end of summer in a grand and friendly fashion for PCA members. There was a great collection of 911s, 914s, 944s (including one with a Corvette engine), newer 996s and 997s, including at least one GT3 and the ever-present collection of increasingly valuable 356s. Dave and Ann were once again the perfect hosts, gracious to all the members and yet-to-become members, regaling everyone with great stories of Porsche adventures over the

years. During the break, Dave asked a contingent of Durango attendees to come to the front to be rec-ognized for their long drive to the roundup. He also asked current Roadrunner Region President Steven Stacy, Past President Liz Shaw, and Zone 9 Rep Sean Cridland to come up to talk about the Road-runner Region being recognized by PCA as the

2008 Region of the year. Cridland talked about the many activities the Roadrunners have put on over the years and all the work done by so many members to make the region successful, lead-ing up to last years, PCA Escape, which brought in so much attention to the region from all over the country this past year. Liz Shaw talked about the feeling of being at the awards ceremony and realizing that the emcee was talking about

the Roadrunner Region, especially when he men-tioned the long tradition of the Corrales Roundup. Steven Stacy then pre-sented Dave and Ann with a special Roadrun-ner plate for their years of service to the club. Indeed the Stinchcombs have been involved with the Region from its very beginnings, with Dave serving in a number for roles over the years and Anne being very support-ive and patient with his fascination of all things Porsches. Then it came time for the annual visit to the 904 shrine. If you’ve never been the Corrales Round-up, then you’ve likely not seen the 904, or Carrera GTS, as it was called. The 904 was Porsche’s early 60s racecar with sleek, flowing lines and was powered by a number of different engines, including those from the 356 Carrera and the early 911. It is regarded by many as one of the

most classic Porsche race cars and is an im-mediate predecessor to those more powerful and famous cars the 906, 908, and 917. Every year Dave is gracious enough to give everyone a peek and even to sit in it and try it on. It’s truly an amazing car and it’s lines remain classic to this day. All in all it was a great day and every-one enjoyed seeing the cars as well as all their

Porsche friends. There were even a few new addi-tions. Doug Brosveen had finally parted ways with the ubiquitous Red Devil 928 and was present with his new Cayman -- red, of course -- nicknamed Ruby. As everyone parted it was agreed that this years record turnout would most likely be eclipsed by next years 40th Anniversary event. It’s sure to be one for the record books. Put it on your calendar now so you don’t forget!

Remember When? From the Archives of the Roadrunner Ramblings, by James Hume Roadrunner Region Historian

30yrs ago. Ramblings editor Joan Christensen wrote of a road trip to San Francisco in her Pumpkin 911E. The RRR wished Dr. Ferry Porsche a happy 70th birthday on September 19th and received confirmation from Dr. Porsche that “There is no sensible alternative to the automobile as a means of transport.” RRR’s own Larry Hooper

wrote of his 1960 356 1600 purchased from the original owner in 1964. The 2nd annual Los Alamos Caravan combined with a fun rally to straighten-out the switchback and chicanes on the 2 hour drive to the atomic city. Carole Steinkruger reported that she did not blow her transmission during the September DE at the Digital parking lot.

25 Years Ago Bill Swope was planning a hayride to the balloon launch site. Bernie & Anne Butterfield were calling for all Porsche drivers to chauffeurs VIPs to gourmet diner benefitting the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Shades of the future of Porsche and VWOA/Audi with separation animosity when VW corporate issued written orders for

personnel to destroy anything with “Porsche” on it. Cal Hanson wrote of a recent autocross on a long course requiring use of 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear! He reminded all that a better prepared and maintained car will always result in better times. Jim DeBlois asked RRR members to keep an eye out for a 1953 America Coupe just brought into New Mexico by the new owner. Porsche USA reported that the average purchaser of a new 928 was 45 years old and had annual earnings of $113,000; the average 911 owner was 38 and earned $88,000; the average 924 Turbo driver

was 35 and earned $54,000; and the average 924 driver was 30 and earned $38,000.

20 Years Ago No edition in file.

15 Years Ago Ramblings editor Tom Leavitt hoped to see all at the Oktoberfest in Angel Fire. RRR

President Randy Bartell reports that the city of Las Vegas is backing the RRR 2-day autocross at the airport but the FAA was obstructing citing a policy prohibiting non-aeronautical use of airports. Ever see Indy cars run on the tarmac in Cleveland? DEs 6 and 7 were run in Santa Fe with close times on good tracks. Fourteen RRR members gathered at the Harmon home to learn about detailing the Porsche from the experts at Professional Paint Supply. Bet you wish you had: Gary Smith offered three 914s for sale each with 6,000 mile warranties, track set-ups optional.

10 Years Ago RRR President Neil Alessio lead a group of RRR members to Las Cruces for Oktoberfest with the Carrera Region. The folks in Colorado were asking RRR members to come up to Pueblo for the last DE of the century. $110 got you two days on the track. It didn’t matter that the morning group ran in the sunshine

and the afternoon group ran in the rain, Porsches took the top times at the Porsche / BMW Challenge DE#7. Tech Chair David Gardner reported on his week in Monterey at Laguna Seca and preparations made for driving his 911 across the Mojave in the daytime. Bet you wish you had: Dan Miller wanted only $500 for brand new Weber 40IDAs w/K&N cleaners and covers, never installed, and Dan Thero offered a ‘76 912E, good body, all glass and complete running gear but minus engine, perfect for restoration or the foundation of an autocrosser, for $2,995.

5 Years Ago RRR President Russ Kelso wrote of the 50+ Porsches on the lawn at the Stinchcombs. The 10th annual Porsche / BMW Challenge, was run for the first time on the full 1.7 mile road course at Sandia Motorsports Park. Porsche 10, BMW 0. Art & Sony Shanks ran a fun, safe and successful DS#6 up in Santa Fe

that offered seven runs per driver. Besides trophies for best red or green chili dish, November’s Chili Cook Off will include the “Hot German” award for the dish best integrating German and New Mexico ingredients. Bet you wish you had: Sarah & Philippe offered their award winning 1978 911SC with 3.0CSI for $15,500.

Nuts and Volts by William Agnew

John, who runs Rex goes racing up here in Santa Fe, had mentioned to me that he’d been seeing a lot of CV joint boot failures on Boxster S’s, ones just like my wife Flo’s 6 speed. The boots he was talking about are those corrugated rubber donuts surrounding the flexible joints that transfer power from the tranny out to the axles and the wheels. They contain a big glop of grease that constantly lubricates the precision CV joints, and they keep the muck and grit of the open road out of the system. Because I’ve found Boxsters to be reliable cars over seven years of ownership, I didn’t pay much attention to John’s low key comment. Alas, when I was changing the oil on the car last month I spotted two ripped boots, the inboard ones on each axle, their interiors still glistening with grease. The good news was that the joints weren’t dry, so unlikely to be damaged, and the genuine Porsche parts to repair the problem would cost less that a couple hundred bucks. But the bad news for this home mechanic, the big bad news, was that a good part of the rear suspension had to be pulled apart and pried away to get at both axles and their

torn boots. I knew all those big bolts with big torque settings were going to be a big pain to work with. The Bentley Publishing manual and Pete’s Boxster Board mentioned nary a word of dealing with springs and preloaded suspension bushings, making changing CV joint boots seem like a breeze that any bozo could do. What a laugh. It was all out war down there in my shop for a good 25 hours of my time, over a period of a month. Nothing, and I mean nothing, was going to come apart, or go back together easily for me. By the time I had the axles on my work bench, ready for the easy job of replacing the boots, my garage floor was littered with hammers, drifts, pullers, splitters, cheater bars, and a couple of empty cans of Liquid Wrench. I’d taken two special trips to Albuquerque for tools and parts at Porsche of Albuquerque. I’d lost sleep over the parts I might have damaged as I bashed away at control arms and wheel carriers. I’d even contemplated the ultimate defeat of putting the thing on a truck and taking it in pieces to Rex’s. But I did finally fix the car, and all it needed was an alignment after I’d put it all back together. I’d learned something about a Boxster’s rear suspension, I’d saved a few bucks, and I reminded myself that I could still stick with a mechanical problem until it was solved. It was all worth it, mostly.

August and early September have been a great time in Zone 9. I had a chance to reconnect with some old friends and meet some new ones. On August 30 I attended the 39th annual Corrales Roundup at the home of Dave and Ann Stinchcomb of the Roadrunner Region. For anyone who’s been in the PCA for some period of time, you’ve probably run into this amazing couple who have hosted one of the Zone’s longest running events. Always gracious and wildly enthusiastic about Porsches, Dave was very instrumental with getting the Roadrunner Region going and has attended many Parades, 356 Registry events, and many, many other Porsche events of all kinds. Their home is a traditional New Mexico adobe home nestled amongst large cottonwood trees in the Rio Grande bosque. It’s just a perfect setting for a late summer Porsche event. Not a judged event, it’s just a nice get together where owners come and chat and look at the cars and share stories. This year the Road-runner Region used the event as an op-portunity to show off its Region of the Year trophy. Region president Steven Stacy presented Dave and Ann with a beautiful Roadrunner plate in appreciation for their many years of dedication to the PCA mot-to: It’s not just the cars, it’s the people. Another great opportunity to meet with some Zone 9 members came when I visited the Llano Estacado Region over in Amarillo. The Llano Estacado Region was at one time a large and very active re-gion. But when the Air Force base closed, many of its members followed their job assignments and the region shrank to a small, but very enthusiast core of dedi-

cated members. It was great to visit with them at their monthly breakfast meeting and hear both the new and the old stories. You may have seen mention of current president Joe Papp and his father and past-president Joseph Papp in a recent article about Porsche Parade in Excellence magazine. They had a few problems with their 911T on the trip to Parade and found the perfect remedy once they got home: get a new 997S! Of course they still have the 911T and they look great together. It’s fun to be in a Zone where we have one of the largest regions in the country (the Rocky Mountain Region) and the smallest (Llano Estacado). It really does confirm that regardless of the size of the Porsche community, the enthusiasm and dedication remain the same to the best marques on the planet. One last note. I’ve found that many PCA members are up-to-date with contemporary commu-nications technology and social networking. I’m refer-ring now to Facebook. At first I was like many of you and thought of it as a “kids” thing, but some of my fel-low zone-reps strongly suggested that I sign up. Duti-fully, I took the suggestion. But then I found that many of you in Zone 9 and across the country are members and regularly sign in and make posts. So, if you are on FB please look for me as add me as a friend. I love to keep in touch with our membership anyway I can. I’m not one of the Twitterati just yet, but you never know….
