The first time I met Malon Manyape, she had arrived at Riverside Farm

Institute desperately seeking assistance. It was that time of year when food supplies were almost depleted and a lot of peasant farmers were battling to find the next meal to put on the table.

Despite her many trials, at the age of 83 Granny Malon always wore a big toothless smile on her face. Besides fending for herself, she was also the guardian of two orphaned children. When supplies ran low in her household, she would go and labor in neighboring farmers’ fields in exchange for some food. I came to know this dear lady as someone who loved Jesus and who had a heart for helping those in need.

Like Granny Malon, Riverside Farm Institute stands as a light in the community. Situated in a rural area south of Lusaka, Zambia, the institute offers a glimmer of hope to the people of this central African country.

As our name suggests, we are essentially a farm. Our agricultural activities provide a vital source of income to support all of our other activities. It also gives us the opportunity to get close to the community, since all of our laborers are from the surrounding area and most of our produce gets sold for local consumption.

However, our central focus is uplifting the people of Zambia through training and by sharing the gospel. We offer four training courses, support 60 Pioneers (Bible workers), and have just begun a literature distribution ministry.

We also support those in desperate need by sharing food and resources. This is how I got to know Granny Malon, a dear lady with a kind heart who carried a heavy load. She now rests in her grave, waiting for Jesus to call her home. p

Fad diets. Increasing obesity. Body image.

All of these factors contribute to the growing need for principled personal trainers. In response to this need, Black Hills Health and Education Center has started a personal training certification course.

With an extensive fitness facility, a steady supply of wellness guests, and a successful community outreach program, the parameters were in place to start a successful personal training school. The goal of this new program is to provide workers who will teach people how to exercise properly, avoid fad diets, and most importantly teach people to train for the glory of God.

Many from the surrounding community are taking advantage of the opportunity. “I chose Black Hills because of the comprehensive approach to wellness,” says one student, a member of the nearby Lutheran church. “I truly appreciate the spiritual support along

with the incredible health and wellness education received here. The entire staff is kind, very knowledgeable, and professional. I’m blessed to learn and spend time here.”

Personal training provides an excellent opportunity to connect with people while helping to meet their physical needs. While Jesus was on earth, He met people’s physical needs first, which opened the door to evangelism. That is the goal of Black Hills, to send out workers to prepare people for the kingdom, one at a time. p

Training for Eternity

$30,000 will upgrade the aging exercise equipment at Black Hills, improving both the training school and the lifestyle program.

Students gain practical experience by helping with Black Hills’ community outreach program.
