THANK YOU GRADE THREE

The Afternoon Tea held at the Geelong West Community Garden

last Thursday was very successful, largely due to the efforts and

enthusiasm of the Grade Three students from Ashby.

It was wonderful to see their interaction with the Seniors. Many

remarked on how polite the students were, so they are to be

congratulated.

This was an event which was part of the City of Greater Geelong's

October Seniors Festival. Some of the people who had come

along had left their nursing homes for the day, and were thrilled

to be able to sit in the garden and chat to the students, who also

were very helpful in serving food and handing out free raffle

tickets.

Visitors came from many parts of Geelong and were pleased to experience the community garden. In many cases the

growing of vegetables, herbs and flowers reminded them of the gardens they used to have and enjoy when they were

younger.

I found it hard to see these wonderful visitors as "Seniors" as they seemed remarkably spritely and energetic, which I

put down to them all being keen gardeners.

Interestingly, research has shown that interaction with a garden, even just visiting, reduces a person's chance of

dementia by 36%.

I believe that Ashby students, therefore, had a part to play in improving the health of some of the older people in our

community so, on behalf of the Geelong West Community Garden, I would like to say a very big thank you to these

students and their teachers.
