Mass Intentions for the Week
October 15th & 16th, 2016
In today’s Gospel parable, the widow elicits great empathy from listeners and readers. The Hebrew word for widow is related to a word that means “one who has no voice.” but her voice is her only hope to achieve the justice she desires. This parable is often presented as a teaching on the effects of persistent prayer. The thinking is that if we ask, God will eventually answer and grant what we ask. But this would seem to equate God with the unjust judge, and it casts us as pious whiners. That may not be what Jesus intended. Through her persistence the widow persuades the judge to grant her request, though he does so grudg-ingly. He is unlike God, who desires to see that jus-tice is done “speedily.” The First Reading offers another insight into the ef-fects of prayer. With Moses, it is the support of oth-ers that allowed him to be in touch with God. The role of the community is an important element in the prayer of the people of God. For Paul, keeping in touch with the Lord happens by being faithful to the Word of God, which imparts wisdom. This wisdom is then expressed in action; especially in preaching and doing “every good work.” The purpose and result of prayer is not just for personal gain, but is intended to give strength to others who would become disciples of the Lord. Rather than changing God’s mind, prayer changes us, little by little, even when it seems that the chal-lenges (inner and outer) are too much. We do not lose heart, much less turn to injustice ourselves. We do not become weary, for we are constantly in touch with God. Ultimately the unjust, whether one person or many, who neither fear God nor respect human beings will not withstand the power of God working through us. How do these readings help you understand the dy-namics of your own prayer life? In what circumstances have you been or encountered the widow? What is the biggest challenge to praying without be-coming weary?
