It might not feel like Spring yet (more like Winter really), but, the HRCAV financial year is only a week from its end! That means that this is the final newsletter for the 2015/16 BARC membership.

We hope that everybody has enjoyed their year with BARC, in-cluding the friendships, instruction, social events, special meals and camaraderie at competitions.

The Committee has worked hard, as all BARC’s committees have always done, to try to provide a positive and welcoming environment. I will take this opportunity to thank them for their dedication, effort and energy in providing this for all of the club to reap the benefits of.

The thanks also have to go to the other helpers, the ones that always put their hand up when assistance is asked for, or just see something that needs doing, and get on with doing it. These members are worth their weight in gold, and their ef-forts do not go unnoticed! Everybody pitching in, whether it’s to help out with a few dishes (everyone should be doing their own, btw), sweeping the clubrooms, bringing along food, emp-tying bins, picking up rubbish that’s blowing around the grounds from previous events, cleaning up manure left by oth-ers........., oh how the list goes on, it all helps. So, if you’ve done any of that, or more, THANK YOU!

It’s also really nice to see members helping each other out. It might be holding a horse while someone has a last minute ‘nervous one’, or while they get a second horse off the float, or helping to load a horse, and just by being encouraging and supportive. These kindnesses go a long way, and it’s such a joy to have people like that in our club.

What’s Coming Up?

IMPORTANT EVENTS, expanded upon!

All current members should have received the membership forms for the 2016/17 HRCAV financial year, by email from Ian, in the last couple of days. The forms will also be posted

on the club’s website and facebook page soon.

Please note that the annual HRCAV disclaimer must be signed and provided at time of join-

ing/renewal EACH YEAR, as outlined by the HRCAV.

You also need to ensure that you get your green membership form stamped, signed and dated. This is your job - nobody else’s responsibility. Without the necessary verification, you will be unable to compete (without paying day insurance, if the host club allows it).

Much easier to get it done straight away and not risk it!!

The Treasurer has requested that if you are paying by direct deposit, could you PLEASE

date it to happen on or after November 1st (for ease of book keeping). Your insurance and membership lapses after October 31st.

BARC looks forward to having you along for another ride in the new HRCAV financial year!

NB: Lea Mullins has kindly advised us that the best BSB number for our account is the 633 000 one.

On most occasions the 633 108 works but for some members that one doesn't. Anyway to avoid any

delays or problems please use 633 000. Ian is going to change that detail on the membership form and resend

NOVEMBER RALLY AT WOADY YALOAK EC

BARC will be holding the first rally of the year at Woady Yaloak EC in Smythesdale! The club has been very lucky in being able to book the Woady grounds for this rally, as our usual grounds are

now unavailable on our rally day (Sunday 27th November 2016).

Page 3: october 16 news - Ballarat ARC · means that this is the final newsletter for the 2015/16 BARC membership. ... • December rally will be held at BPC on Saturday 10th December

NOVEMBER RALLY AT WOADY YALOAK EC cont.

Our usual grounds are being used that weekend for the Horse Trials that were cancelled ear-lier in the season. Unfortunate timing, especially if you want to go to riding club and the

HT’s! But, with the unseasonal rain, many competitions have been cancelled or postponed this year (insert sad face here). If you are one of the members who usually volunteers and helps out at these Horse Trials, maybe you can volunteer to help on the Saturday and still

join us at the rally on Sunday?

There are some up-sides of this turn of events however! Ballarat PC are waiving our ground hire fee for our December rally, (as a thank you for the inconvenience caused with our Nov. rally) which saves us some pretty big $$, plus, we pay less for the ground hire at Woady

than we do at Ballarat! Hopefully the cross country will be open at Woady, and you die-hard CC riders can enjoy a hoot around a different course!! We’ll have to wait and see on that one though.

Lessons should run pretty much the way they usually do, but, we will need to set up the show jumping on the big sand arena at the start of the day. Please allow some extra time in

the morning to help out—remember- many hands make light work!! If you are not able to help in the morning, you can catch up in the afternoon with pack up instead!

Parking is in the lower car park. The steel yards are there for your convenience. ALL POO AND MESS NEEDS TO BE CLEARED AWAY, including car park and yards.

If you have any questions about this rally, please see an Executive club member.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM)

The club’s AGM will be held at the November rally (at Woady Yaloak EC).

ALL positions will be declared open/vacant and ready to be filled!

All current 16/17 BARC members will be able to nominate and accept positions on the Execu-tive and General Committees. Proxy forms are available to be filled in for anyone unable to attend on the day who would like to be represented.

If you would like to be nominated for a position, any club member can do so, but you are also VERY welcome to speak with the exiting committee members to find out more about the role/s

you’re interested in. They will be very happy to share their knowledge, expertise and time in helping members who are willing to take on new positions.

If you’re not quite ready this year to take on a position, why not start attending the monthly meetings to get a better idea of how it all works? The club encourages ‘new blood’!!

DECEMBER RALLY—SATURDAY 10TH!!

Here’s a fact you might not know: BARC used to only ever have 10 rallies a year! To squeeze in an extra couple, we hold one earlier in the month of December, so that it doesn’t get too

close to Christmas! (and there’s one in January as well now)

We will be back at our usual grounds for December and the club will host a special Christmas

Lunch, like we did last year!! Those ham/turkey and coleslaw rolls went down a treat last time, as did the shared sweets provided by members. See next newsletter for more info.

FINAL ROUND OF THE DRESSAGE MINI COMP

This rally has the final round of the Dressage Mini Comp running!

Thank you to Kristy Irons for running the competition for us this year, and thank you also to everyone who participated in any or all of the rounds.

Another thank you to the people who set up or took down letters, pencilled, called tests or helped in any way.

Kristy is pencilling this round, and Deidre Matthews is judging it for us.

Please ensure you maintain a 10m CLEARANCE AROUND THE COMPETITION ARENA, as per HRCAV rules. Access to arenas will be via the driveway in the morning. Your consideration will be appreciated.

For a full list of the MC rules, go to the club’s website and learn all about it!

Presentations will be made at the end of the AGM at Woady in November.

THINGS WE TRY......

There was request to have a greater range of jumps available in the show jumping area for our show jumping lessons.

It was decided to bring the jumps trailer out next to the arena for this purpose. Unfortunately, we don’t actually have access to the ‘exciting’ or ‘scary’ jumps, and there was a distinct lack of

volunteers to put the trailer out and in each rally, so it was determined that this is not a feasible option.

We tried.........

DRESSAGE ARENA CHAINS

Members may recall that some years back we hosted our Golden Spurs Dressage Jackpot day at a couple of different venues, as we needed access to arenas with HRCAV approved surrounds.

We went to Elcho Park in Lara once, and the next year was at Woady in Smythesdale.

After realising that we also needed to conform to official HRCAV rules at our rallies as well as

competitions, the decision was made to purchased the necessary chains so that we could use our own grounds. It was a little while later

that we agreed to leave the chains on the arenas for everyone to use.

If you were at the lunchtime meeting last rally, you would have heard the request for volunteers to help take down those chains.

Pony Club are replacing them with some new lengths.

Thank you to everyone who got in and helped remove them.

We shall be collecting them this rally and storing them for future use.

BOOKING LESSONS– in case you’ve forgotten

It appears that our Vice President and Rally Co-ordinator, Kristy Irons, is still encountering the problem of members booking lessons according to their time preference and not their level.

When booking your lessons, there are 3 things that get considered-

• Choice of instructor

• Time of lesson/s

• Level of horse and rider combination

In previous years, we have allowed members to jot their name down in a slot that suited their needs and wishes. This generally worked out okay, but some members were disadvantaged.

Some disadvantages noted in this system were-

• Too much variation in rider/horse combinations in one lesson. This makes it hard for in-structors to give maximum benefit to everybody in the lesson, and also makes it difficult for them to plan lessons in advance

• Some members continuously got to have their preferred time/s, as they were able to access the rally plan early, while others consistently missed getting their

first choice

• Some members often got to have a lesson with their preferred instructor, while others

found those spaces already full when they went to book

The club attempted to reduce these inequities by adding a Level guide with each riding place. The levels and times were put on a rotating system so as to be fair. For example, if you choose to ride with Instructor A each rally, and are a level 4 combination with your horse, one month

you would have the choice to ride at 10am, and 2.30pm. The next month it would have rotated to 11am and 2.30pm. This is to allow a fair system. Some members were consistently having to ride at 10am and 2.30pm, making for quite a long day and with an early start EVERY rally.

So, from now on, you will need to contact Kristy directly to book your lessons . You will need to give Kristy-

• Your level assessment for that horse (if you are not assessed, a guess will be made)

• Your preferred instructor

• Your preferred time/s to ride

Every effort will be made to accommodate these preferences, but members will no longer be al-

lowed to put themselves in whichever lesson they want regardless of the Level guideline.

This system is being put in place to allow fairness for ALL members.

If you have a better idea of how to make everyone ‘play nice’ then please come along to a meet-

ing and share your thoughts!

SJ SUB-COMMITTE FOR COMPETITIONS??

Are you interested in Show Jumping? Are you interested in BARC hosting a/some SJ competi-tion/s? Then, you’re needed on a SJ committee!

Someone with jumping and competition knowledge, expertise and energy is required if the club is going to put something together.

Is it you?? If so, talk to the Committee PLEASE!!

2017 GOLDEN SPURS DRESSAGE JACKPOT DAY

The 2017 Golden Spurs Series will be upon us before we know it. Our fundraising committee member, Carrin, has been hard at work securing sponsorship and prizes for our big day already!

The booty is lookin’ good!

We are trying something different next year. We are piggy-backing with Smythesdale ARC and

hosting a weekend of Dressage at Woady Yaloak EC! The goal is to have more entries and a shared workload.

Ballarat will host their leg on Saturday the 28th of January, and Smythesdale will be on Sunday 29th. There is a rather large number of cross over memberships between our two clubs, so

combining our events should provide one big weekend of fun!!

Please be aware that with the anticipated increase in entries, we will require more pencillers

than usual. If you have a friend or relative who could help us out, please ask them!

We will also be having working bees on Thursday and Friday to set up the pipe arenas on the

big sand arena and on the lower grass fields. Thursday is a Public Holiday.

As always, EVERY SINGLE MEMBER is required to help out. This is a HUGE fundrais-ing event for our club, and it is this event that keeps our fees down. Please don’t leave it to everyone else to do the work that keeps our club afloat, and costs down.

Members can ride and help out on the day. Jobs will be allotted around riding times.

Mark the event on your calendar now!

And, you can always rope in a helper or two!!

Agistment also available

Medical Armbands You will be aware already that it is a requirement to wear your medical armband whilst mounted at the BARC rallies.

But, have you checked to make sure your details are still correct?

Have you changed vehicle or float since you filled in the details?

Have you moved?

Have you got a new phone number (or has your contact person)?

Might be a good time to check it out and make sure everything’s still up to date and correct.

In response to the review of the EN1384 standard for equestrian helmets the HRCAV has amended the rules relating to approved helmets.

General Rule 9.2 now reads:

Insurance cover is voided if an accident occurs whilst mounted and the rider is not wearing an approved equestrian helmet with a fixed harness. Approved equestrian helmets must comply with the following standards: AS/NZS 3838 (AU), ASTM F 1163 (USA), PAS 015 (UK) and VG1

(Europe). The EN 1384 (Europe) standard is only acceptable for helmets which were manufac-tured prior to 2016.

Event Rule 9.3 now reads:

An approved equestrian helmet with a fixed harness MUST be worn at all times whilst mounted. The required standards for helmets at HRCAV competitions will be AS/NZS 3838 (AU), ASTM F 1163 (USA), PAS 015 (UK) and VG1 (Europe). The EN 1384 (Europe) standard is only acceptable

for helmets which were manufactured prior to 2016.

Members are reminded that helmets should be replaced following a fall and that the

generally accepted usable life of most helmets is 5 years. Please check the label in your helmet to ensure that it complies with the new rules.

The helmet approved standards list has been updated in the Equestrian Australia (EA) General Regulations as from 19 October 2016.

Current American standard SNELL E2001 and British standard PAS 015 have been added to the list of approved safety stan-dards to offer a wider range of choice for our members.

The new Australian ARB HS 2012 standard has been added to the ongoing and current AS/NZS 3838 Australian standard. This

standard has been published by Racing Australia in 2012.

EA’s responsibilities include maximising safety in our sport. That is why from now on, except where Sport Rules allows other-wise, riders and drivers competing in an EA competition, must wear an approved helmet with the chin strap fastened at all

times. The same is recommended when riding a horse at any time.

Judy Fasher, Chair of EA says “Equestrian Australia is pleased to have aligned our rules with international standards for riding

helmets. The new rules offer variety, combined with the most advanced technology available in the production and design of riding helmets.”

Following the withdrawal of the safety standard EN1384 in Europe during 2014-2015 EA had followed the movement in Febru-

ary 2016 by informing members that the EN1384 standard would not be permitted as of 1 January 2017 and that in addition, the new VG1 was a new approved standard on the list. The year notice gave riders time to purchase new helmets if necessary.

See the February 2016 statement

As per the EA General Regulations, Article 122.2: Dress and Salute, the following will apply:

Except where Sport Rules allows otherwise, riders and drivers competing in an EA competition, must wear an approved helmet with the chin strap fastened at all times. The same is recommended when riding a horse at any time.

Protective headgear must conform with one of the current approved safety standards:

- Current Australian standard AS/NZS 3838 (2006 onwards) provided they are SAI Global marked.

- New Australian standard ARB HS 2012 provided they are SAI Global marked - Current American standards ASTM F1163 (2004a or 04a onwards) provided they are SEI marked, or SNELL E2001.

- Current British standard PAS 015 (1998 or 2011) provided they are BSI Kitemarked. - Interim European Standard VG1 (01.040: 2014-12) provided they are BSI Kitemarked

great little fundraiser for the club.

The Haymarket are on the corner of Market St (opposite the Library) in Ballarat, and are also on La Trobe Street (James and Son/Castlegate). Look for the

banners and flyers out on the front fence!

They sell all sorts of stock produce, dog and cat food and supplies (including a huge range of dog beds, toys and equipment, things for chickens/poultry, horse sup-plements, herbals supplies etc. They are also part of the

Tucker’s Place group and have regular catalogue sales.

Saddleworld Ballarat are also now donating a gift voucher ($20) to our club to be raffled at the lunch

time meetings!

All proceeds from our raffle go straight back to our club

and help pay for our expenses.

Members have been getting into the winning spirit and we’ve had lots of happy winners.

Thank you to the members who are remembering to contact Kristy if they need to cancel their rally lessons. Doing so in a timely manner allows us the opportunity to best utilise funds and lessons. It also helps to keep the day run-ning smoothly. If you are unable to attend lessons that you have booked, PLEASE CONTACT KRISTY ASAP (even if it is the morning of the rally), by text is fine. Doing so might save the club money, or provide better access to instruction for our members. Your communication is very much appreciated.

Yep, POOP! Unfortunately not everyone cleans up after their horses, which means that sometimes when you go to put your horse in a yard, it is already dirty :(

Thank you to those members who are taking the time and care to clean up, not only after their own horses, but also taking care of the mess that less considerate people have left behind.

There was previously an obvious place to put the manure, but that seems to have been missing in action the last couple of rallies. You might need to just find a pile that other people have been constructing, and add to it. Please avoid putting your horses’ poop on the fenced-off trees. This might have a detrimental effect on them, and we’re looking forward to the shade these trees will one day provide.

Please also clean up any mess your horses make when tied up in the parking area.

TOP TEAMS TROPHY EVENTS TTT events are a great opportunity for members of our club to come together, form one or more teams and

compete both as an individual and as a team. Teams consist of either 3 or 4 riders whose individual scores

are combined, using a formula, to reach a team score.

It is a great chance to get out there with your fellow club members, have fun and compete at the premier

teams based equestrian competition in the state.

Over the years many a memorable moment has been enjoyed by members of BARC competing at TTT

events. A hot tub at TTT Dressage many years ago is one such moment that springs to mind. The partici-

pants will no doubt still be chuckling over it for many years to come.

Entries for TTT events are submitted by the club so if anyone is interested in participating in any of the

events listed below then speak with Teresa Grove, our TTT Co-ordinator, by the date specified.

Listed below are the TTT Events on the HRCAV calendar as they currently stand on the HRCAV Calen-

dar.

THANK YOU!! A MASSIVE thank you to Nadine Gass for yet again organising our wine fundraiser for BARC!

Although only a handful of our members took up the challenge, which is rather disappointing, the club will still gain from the efforts of Nadine and those who put in orders.

The money raised is sure to help with our continuous efforts to keep our membership costs down. Thanks Nadine (and no doubt Chris who I am guessing is doing the pick up). You guys

AM7 with an unlucky rail and had a rail on fence 3 in the power and speed for no

placing but still managed to pull off champion level 3 for the weekend. Love our

new Hamag halter.

Phone Alert!!

One member recently required attention to her frequently used phone ! Thinking she needed to splurge on a new one as the old faithful was dying ... She visits the pristine sterile Telstra shop where it became obvious that carting your phone in your pocket while tending horses eventually the battery connection fills with chaff , carrots and horse shit !! Great work SC xx Always grateful for contributions to the newsletter, Ed

Sending out a MASSIVE thank you to Christine Christie for filling in and doing the

newsletter for me while I was away last month. You probably didn’t even notice the

change, and typically of Christine, she got on and did the job without any fuss. Chris-

tine has held so many positions in our club during the last (almost??) 20 years, and she

has been super proficient in all of them, and I knew she was up to the task, because for

a few years there, we used to share the role of getting the newsletter done together!

Thank you my sweet!!
