Club members are supporting Women’s

Empowerment by donating clothing to the

women they serve. They need items in good

condition such as: coats/jackets, dresses, suits,

pants, tops, skirts, jeans, sweats/activewear

and accessories, i.e. scarves, knit hats, gloves,

belts, shoes, etc.

With Fall in the air, our thoughts turn to

changing around our closets from Summer to

Winter. If you have any items you don’t want

anymore, bring them to our weekly meetings

and Mo will take them at the end of each

month to Women’s Empowerment.

Thanks to Marilee Monagan, Maureen

McBride, Sharon Stone and Diane

Wright for their donations to our project.

Happy Thoughts. PP Bob Spears donated

$20 to Marilee for PolioPlus. The $20 had a

long history—Bob told Dominic he had been

undercharged for lunches on his September

tab. For being so honest, Dominic paid for

Bob’s lunch today, Bob then gave the $20 to

PolioPlus.

PE Patrick Magnani had a Happy Thought.

His brother’s house in Napa survived the

recent fires. He spun the wheel for $4.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS

WEEK’S PROGRAM

PP Mo McBride introduced our speaker

Ken Wilson. Ken is a native Californian

having grown up and residing in Clarksburg

for most of his life. He attended Sac City

College from 1969-1971 and then headed to

U.C. Davis in 1972 where he studied

Viticulture 101 while growing grapes for

Wilson Farms in Clarksburg.

He currently serves as President of the Fourth

Generation Family Farming Operation and

since 1972 has grown his family's vineyard

holdings from 60 acres to over 1,000 today.

He joined the Rotary Club of West Sacramento

in 1994 and served as President during the

2014-15 Rotary year. He is also his club's

Scholarship Chairman for high schoolers in

both West Sac and at Delta High School in

Clarksburg.

Ian Riseley, the current President of Rotary

International, has asked every Rotarian in the

world to plant a tree over the next year

through Earth Day which occurs in April 2018.

District Governor Sandi Sava has asked

our speaker to take the lead with a district-

wide tree planting effort where each Rotarian

in the district will plant a tree.

Rotary District 5180 Tree Planting

Campaign

We are excited that Rotary District 5180 is

supporting Sacramento Tree Foundation's

programs through their 2017-2018 tree

planting goal. To facilitate participation, we

have created a description of each of our

programs and how Rotary Clubs would

interaction with them.

Learn — Sponsor a classroom for the Seed to

Seedling Program.

Seed to Seedling is a fun and interactive program

for 3rd and 4th grade classrooms. Sacramento

Tree Foundation supplies oak tree acorns,

growing supplies, growing instructions and

curriculum to teachers, who can integrate the

program into their lesson plans to teach young

people about natural science and stewardship.

Teachers will guide the students through as

much of the curriculum as they would like to

use, as well as the planting of the acorns, and the

ongoing care of the seedlings.

At the end of the program, the growing seedlings

will be delivered back to the Sacramento Tree

Foundation’s office. Those trees will be part of

future plantings performed by Tree Foundation

staff and volunteers.

Plant — Get trees for your home through the

Sacramento Shade program.

The program is specifically offered to SMUD

customers; therefore, residents in Sacramento

County and in a small portion of Placer County

are eligible to participate.

Tree Foundation staff will consult with each

resident to determine the best tree planting

locations and types of trees to plant.

Depending upon space, participants can receive

up to 10 free trees for their homes. There are

generally 30 different deciduous trees to choose

from. Once the consultation has occurred, trees

will be delivered to the home. The resident is

responsible for planting the trees in the locations

agreed upon.

Volunteer — Participate as a group at a

Sacramento Tree Foundation event. The Tree

Foundation has volunteer events nearly every

weekend of the year. Each event has its own

start and end time; but typically, they begin

around 9 am and last until 12 pm. Participating

Rotary Clubs would be linked to events that are

already scheduled joining other volunteers and

groups that are also participating.

Join — Lead a Community Shade Planting

event. The Tree Foundation supports local

community groups who are interested in

organizing tree planting events in their

neighborhoods through the "Community Shade"

program.

The Tree Foundation can supply the trees, tools

and expertise for the planting day. Planting

locations are typically public spaces — such as

schools and parks, though churches, businesses

and parking lots could be considered.

Any group that plants trees through the

Community Shade program is responsible for

ensuring the long-term survival of the trees —

meaning that the trees will receive regular

watering and care for three years after the

planting.

In Sacramento County, trees can be acquired for

free through the SMUD Community Shade

program. If the proposed planting is outside of

Sacramento County, the trees would need to be

purchased by the Rotary Club.

Community Shade plantings typically take three

months to complete, from application

submission to planting day. Throughout the

year, scheduling on specifically desired dates can

As is our usual custom, President Roland

gratitude for his informative presentation.

glasses and join him in a toast to Rotary
