"Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven" (James 5: 14-15). This Scripture passage is just one of many that point us toward the ancient practice of what we, as Catholics, now call the Anointing of the Sick. Over the years, the Church has continued to pray for people who were ill. This Sacrament is our way of entrusting those who are sick into the faithful love of God. The Anointing of the Sick is not a superstitious cure all for illness, but it does and can bring much comfort to people suffering and to the people who love them. For years, anointing was reserved for patients who were near death. In her wisdom, the Church came to understand a broader view of this Sacrament of healing. Though anointing does often happen in hospital beds and under emergency circumstances, which is entirely appropriate when the situation is dire, the church now understands more fully that there is also a communal component. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that when the sick are anointed they should be "assisted by their pastor and the whole ecclesial community, which is invited to surround the sick in a special way through their prayers and fraternal attention" (#1516). "Like all the sacraments the Anointing of the Sick is a liturgical and communal celebration....It is very fitting to celebrate it within the Eucharist (#1517). Our parish will be celebrating the Anointing of the Sick at all Masses on the weekend of October 22 nd and 23 rd . If you have a serious or chronic illness of mind, body, or soul or will be undergoing surgery, please consider allowing your community to gather and pray for you in this sacrament of healing. We will also be offering the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at our Friday Mass with the school community on October 28 th . For information on the celebration of the Sacrament at the October 28 th Mass, please contact Mr. Chris in the school office. If you have any questions about this Sacrament, please contact the parish office. Remember, the anointing of the sick is not only for emergencies. All who are suffering serious illnesses such as arthritis or cancer, or addiction or depression, or kidney disease, etc. please join us for Mass and this sacrament of healing.

LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends,

I thank all the women who took part in the Women’s Christ Renews His Parish retreat. Their dedication and openness to the Lord always produces more than the moment good fruit. For some it will be a new beginning in faith; for others, it will be a deeper exploration of companionship. The two annual parish retreats continue to be a blessing for the parish.

With that in mind, our parish will welcome Fr. RB Williams OP the week of November 7th-9th, 7:00pm for our annual Parish Mission. Fr. RB will lead us in All That We Have to Live On: God’s Gift and Our Response. This mission is designed to remind us of our baptismal commitment and its practical challenges. Fr. RB recently gave the diocesan priest retreat. He is dynamic and insightful in the spiritual life. I look forward to having him in the parish and hope you will keep that MISSION week a priority in your calendar.

AWAKENING FAITH Representatives from Awakening Faith/Catholics Come Home at SJV Outdoor Mass—October 30th People have a need to talk about their faith with other people. Making connections with other Catholics is one of the goals of SJV’s Awakening Faith Ministry, an extension of Catholics Come Home Program. The ministry seeks to provide a casual, nonjudgmental setting where Catholics who have been away from the practice of their faith can share, listen, and learn from one another. We meet every Monday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at CC’s on Coursey Blvd. If you know some family members, friends, and neighbors who could benefit from reconnecting with the Catholic faith, INVITE them to the SJV Picnic and Family Fest on October 30th. ENCOURAGE them to come with you to the outdoor mass. LEAD them to the tables to get a name tag and pick up a reminder of Awakening Faith opportunities. OFFER to come with them to CC’s. HELP renew someone’s faith.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY NEWS

Elizabeth Ministry Rosebud Program Our parish’s Elizabeth Ministry is expanding to include the Rosebud Program, a unique way to show dignity and worth for all life. During the month of October, Respect Life Month, in Mary’s Chapel, you will find our display with instructions about how the program works. It will help us to identify, pray for and support those who are pregnant, celebrating birth and adoption, grieving miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion, infant/child death or those wanting to conceive or adopt. If you have one of these special needs, please select the appropriate color-coded silk rose and place in the vase provided. Each week, we will pray for one of the needs according to the color of a live rose, which will be in a separate vase near the display.

The closing mass celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Diocese of Baton Rouge will be held November 6, 2011 at 3pm at the Baton Rouge River Center. All parishioners from throughout the diocese are invited and encouraged to attend. If you are interested in

A REFLECTION ON THIS WEEK’S SCRIPTURES

What particular injustice to people who are poor or marginalized in our society do I feel passionate about? This Sunday’s gospel touches on the pairing of discipleship and politics. It is usually those who are poor and powerless that are the least represented at our nation’s political table. The elderly and those in nursing home facilities have always reminded me about the fragility of life is and how dependent will can be upon others as we become older. While special interest groups mind the welfare of this segment as a whole, I try to mindful of these people as individuals and try to see where I can enter their lives and remind them that they are valuable and loved by God. Lord this week let me…….
