A word from the principal and welcome to the second week of term 4
Our camp to Mile Creek was very enjoyable as well as educational.
The photos on the last page give you an indication of this. Our MARC Cluster Day
was also a lot of fun. Thank you to all of the students who embraced the spirit of
the day and dressed up. For the first session, Melbourne based actor Tony Bones,
created and performed in a play from the story “The All New Must Have Orange
430”. The story’s theme about Reuse, Reduce and Recycle was a pertinent
reminder of how we need to think twice when purchasing items: do we really need
these?
A reminder that tomorrow, Tuesday is a pupil free day to enable staff to visit
other small primary schools and look at and share best practice in literacy.
After a term 3 of fairly high absenteeism, I am hoping to turn last term’s
attendance rates around. The strong link between school attendance and student
outcomes has been reinforced by a new report from the Australian Institute for
Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). The report states that the negative
correlation between absence and achievement is cumulative and can affect student
outcomes well into the future. The school already praises attendance, and relies on
parental explanations of absences but there is still work to be done together to
ensure consistent attendance. Of course, if your child is ill, then staying home
until well is the obvious choice. Attendance really does matter and we all have a
duty of care to provide students with every opportunity to reach their potential.
The 2020 Portsea Camp will run from Sunday, January 19th to Saturday, January
25th.The cost is $350 for the 7 days and it is coordinated by the Rotary Club of
Numurkah. Transport to and from Portsea will be by bus from Numurkah. Children
between the ages of 9 and 12 years of age are eligible to attend. If your child is
interested in attending this camp, please see me for an application form.
Completed forms must be submitted by the first week of November.
Have a great week everyone,
Susan Olley
