    FREQUENTLY CALLED NOS. +SCRIPTURE GUIDE+

pagdadamayan at pagmamahalan bilang mag-kakapatid.

at magkaisa.

    CATHOLIC FAITH:

Homily delivered by His Eminence Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla,

DD, Apostolic Nuncio to Korea on the occasion of the 16th anniver-

sary of the El Shaddai Prayer Partners Foundation Inc Korea Chapter

at the Tongsong Auditorium on September 28, 2008.

I wish to thank Fr. Alvin for this opportunity to be with you atthe anniversary of the intuition of El Shaddai movement in Korea. The name el Shaddai is indeed very fascinating it is the name ofGod Almighty.

In fact the Jews, or even in the present Hebrew languagetheJews never had a direct name of Godthey had two words thatindirectly meant GodYahve which is unpronounceable be-cause it was made up of all consonants and had no vowels in theHebrew dictionary because Gods Name is the one who is un-

pronounceable. Yahve can be translated as HIM WHO IS UN-PRONOUNCABLE. Siya na hindi masabior better in Ce-

buanosiya nga dili malitok. In fact, there is an instruction fromRome that tells us not to use the name YAHVE or JEHOVA

because the word itself is intended not to be said or pronounced.

The other word God is El or EloyI am who amwas usedat Mt. Sanaimaybe in Filipino or in Cebuanothe translationcan be Siya na palagi siya - or in Cebuanosiya sa kanunay.Later El; was used in its plural form lohim, out of respect for Hewho is. El means Godand he is the God of Shaddai. What doesShaddai means? There are many interpretations.

But I think that Shaddai, at the time of the prophets was a bigcity, probable located now in Syria or Iraq. Some ruins are foundin a place in Syria called Thadbayenwhich probably was partof SHADDAI CITY. It was a city where Abraham, Isaac andJacob lived for a while. So when we say EL SHADDAIwerefer to the Almighty God of the city of Shaddai where Abraham,Isaac and Jacob lived. So He is the God of Abraham, the God ofIsaac and the God of Jacob.

This is the Old Testament. But in the New Testament. There isa new element that entered into the history of our salvation. Godthe Father Almighty of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, sent his onlySonJesus Christto redeem us and free us from our sins. Weare baptized in the name of the God who became man. God be-came man in Jesus Christ.

Pope Benedict XVI, in many of his homiliesoften insistedthat Christianity is not a historical event that happened in Bethle-hemChristianity is an encounter with the person of Jesus. Thiswas the Christianity of St. Paulit way on the road to Damascusthat he was struck by lighting, and there he met Jesus and hisconversion followed.

This Sunday we are treated to one the most beautiful passagesin the Bible. It is found in theLetter of Paul to the Philippians.Paul begins by telling us to be kind, and loving and merciful toeach other. We are two put the interests of others above ourselves. And then he tells us about Jesus. He says that we should have thesame attitude in life as Jesus had. He was forever God, but he didnot regard this as something to be grasped. Instead He emptied

Himself of His Divinity. He became a human being. More thanthis, He became a slave for all of us. And He obeyed His Fatherfor our sakes, even when this obedience led to His death on thecross. In the mystery of our faith, El Shaddai became man.

St. Paul follows with a Christological hymn:Because of this, Godhas bestowed on Him the name that is above every other name; so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, both in

heaven , on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confessthat Jesus Christ is Lord to the Glory of God the Father.

It is difficult for us to explain our belief in Jesus. He is not justa theory, an intellectual doctrine. He is a living person. We havea personal relationship with Him. We go through days speakingto Him and listening for Him to speak to us. We know that He isthe Eternal Son of the Father, the Word of God present from the

beginning of creation. But that is not how we relate to Him or Heto us. He is our closest friend, our deepest love. We look at theCross and are amazed at the extent of His Love for us.

He is God, and yet, He became one of us, more than that, Je-sus came to serve us. He came to free us from the grasp of mate-rialism. He came to renew the quest for spiritual within us. Hecame to restore us to that place in creation that we deserted out of

    pride and selfishness.

Be like Him, St Paul says in the first reading. Serve others.Stop being selfish. Look at the others as more important thanyourself. This is difficult. We would like to think that the worldrevolves around us and our wants. But it does not.

With the Grace of God, we can do the work of God. But this iswork, and work is hard. Work takes time and strength. Workmeans exhausting ourselves to be understanding, in your case, ofyour husband or wife, your children, your parents.

We are called to work in the Fathers vineyard. The vineyardis your house and my house. The vineyard is your life and my life. The vineyard is that place where others are reaching out of us,seeking the love of Christ in us. They long for Jesus. And theycan find Him. They can find Him within us. Within us as Churchand within us as individuals.

What is the reality of Jesus in our lives, in my life? How realis He to you? How real is El Shaddai to you? How real is thisGod made man for us? We all realize that through the Grace ofGod, Jesus presence is stronger and His life is more meaningfulnow than ever before? This is not a matter of feeling, it is a mat-ter of recognizing reality. Everything is for Jesus. Everything thatmatters in the world flows from Him and leads to Him.

St. Paul put it so beautifully in those closing words of todayssecond reading: God has bestowed on Him the name that is aboveevery other name; so that at the name of Jesus every knee should

bend, both in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, and everytongue confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord, the Glory of God theFather. The name of Jesus is a name which is above every name.May this name bless us now and forever.

    Karunungan: Bro. Allan Rodriguez

Nakakainis! Nakakaawa! Nakakaiyak!

Dumanas ngkasuklam-suklam at di-makataong kalagayan.

    Michael B. Balba

    Nandito lang ako kaibigan,

    Kung kailangan mo ng masasandalan,

Di ko magagawang ikaw ay iwanan,

Lalo sa sandali na ika'y luhaan.

    Huwag mong isiping ika'y nag-iisa,

    Pagkat naririto ako sa tuwina,

    Ako kaibigan lagi mong kasama,

Lagi mong kapiling sa saya o dusa.

Tulad mo marami rin akong iniisip,

Marami ring nadarama na mga pasakit,

Kaya wag isipin na mundo'y kaylupit,

Pagkat may bukas pa sa ating sasapit.

    Kailangan lang nating maging matatag,

Sa mga problema wag tayong patinag,

Sa Poong Maykapal hingin nati'y lakas,

Upang sa pagsubok di tayo mabuwag.

Nandito lan ako lagi mong isipin,

Ang ika'y iwanan hindi ko gagawin,

Ang lahat ng bagay ating kakayanin,

    Basta kapit kamay na mananalangin.

    MGA PAGSUBOK

    Amie Sison

    alam.

Loaded na ang memory ng utak ko

Sana isang click sa pagdelete nito

    Refresh ko man walang epekto

Bagong program kaya ang i-install ko.

Ngunit sa lahat ng mga hamon

    Kailangan pa rin nating bumangon

    Scarred People Are Beautiful

    Rev. Charles Cooke

    Man speaks:

    Ive been hurt, Lord.

I have trusted and been betrayed at

    times.

I have loved and received nothing in re-

    turn.

I have tried hard to care and failed of-

    ten.

I have shared my secrets and, heard

    them whispered to others.

I have been warm and received a cold

    shoulder.

I have been through it, Lord.

    Ive fallen on my face.

    Ive banged my shins.

    Ive been bruised.

Look, Lord, Im all covered with scars!

    The Lord Speaks:

    Maybe you havent understood enough.

Maybe you havent learned that human

    life is like that.

    All saints are scarred.

Young love isnt the highest form of

    human love.

The greatest love comes from scarred

    people.

I know that many people stop loving so

    they wont be hurt again.

But those people who do start over

again, who continue in spite of all, who

leave themselves open to the possibility

of being hurt again These people are

able to love again in a deeper way, a

more understanding way, a richer way.

    Mans response:

I think I know what you mean, Lord.

Ive met people like that and knowing

    them gives me courage.

The great people are those who con-

tinue to love with their scars.

    I like scarred people, Lord.

    They are beautiful.

    The Wounded Healer

    Emely Dicolen-Abagat, Ph.D.

    It takes a wounded person

    to heal another wounded person.

A few months after I went back to Koreaas a missionary, one priest asked me, Whydid you leave your work and position in thePhilippines? Why did you return to Korea and be a missionary? My spontaneous answerwas, Father, Jesus, the wounded healer in-spired me. It takes a wounded person to healanother wounded person.

My first encounters with the Filipinas mar-ried to Koreans together with their children atthe Philippine Catholic Center were reallyhurting deep inside. I remember them cryingwhile telling their stories; their children, so innocent and no knowl-edge at all of what was happening were traumatized by their experi-ences with their father; women who were almost out of their minds, confused; hiding in the rooms and bathrooms when their husbandscame to forcibly bring them back home. These situations were reallyimages of myself, of the experiences I went through.

I tried to listen to them, comforted them, encouraged them to bestrong and pray, pray hard, and pray even harder for the grace of theLord is so immense. There is a compassionate and merciful God

who will always guide them. I have always told them dont worry,

everything will be all right. They didnt realize that while I wastelling them these words of encouragement, I was at the same timetelling them to myself because I was also, at that point in my life,

shattered and confused like them, that these words were exactly whatI needed too. After sharing their stories and pains with me, I madesure that I hugged or embraced them.

I imagined and felt that it was Jesus whowas embracing and hugging me. His armswere so comforting, so soothing, and so ac-cepting. These Filipinas may have felt thecomfort of my arms too, they may not haverealized that Jesus has used me as an instru-ment to assure them of his healing power, much as He used them too, to make me ex-perience His healing power.

Our woundedness does not make us lesserin the eyes of God. In fact, these woundsmake us more beautiful, more attractive, moreunderstanding, more compassionate, more

merciful, more forgiving, more self-giving, and even stronger. Then,we can be healers, too. We can be more effective healers becausewe, ourselves have experienced the pain. Jesus was not spared of the pain and of the wounds thats why He perfectly understands ourpains too. Let these wounds give us more courage to go on living, accepting lifes challenges and being a Christ, a healer to otherstoo. Let this poem remind us of our beauty:

    Return to Self

    By: Bevi Tamargo

Its my second day of work here as thePublic Relations Officer of RAKSO TravelCorporation. One of my key jobs is to man-age their website, www.onfino.com. It is awebsite for the Filipino community. I like it because it allows me to do something otherthan teach English. Ive been teaching Eng-lish for about a year now, and I feel like I

have reached my saturation point. I mean, Istill like it, but I think I am ready to do some-thing more. I find that life here in Korea canbe quite challenging because of the languagebarrier. I found that there are lots of opportu-nities to teach English, but I also found thatthe opportunities are also pretty limited tothatto teach English. What I do like aboutit is that it makes it my job to meet and talkto different people in the Filipino community.I think that community is very important forany foreigner living abroad. As the sayinggoes, no man is an island.

To be honest, I was very shy when I was

in the Philippines. So to be engaged in some-thing that basically involves always having todeal with people is quite...unexpected. WhenI was in the Philippines, I was always tryingto prove to myself and to other people aboutthe things that I can do. Perhaps it was be-cause I was born into a family that didntappreciate me, or always marginalized myachievements. And noticed and magnified allof my faults. That I felt my goal in life was to prove to other people that I was worthy ofrespect. So I became defensive in life. And

so, life became hard for me. It was like abattle all the time.

But here in Korea, things changed some-how. Maybe its because Im far from thethings that make me defensive. Maybe be-cause in here, I dont have to fulfill other peoples expectations of what or who Imsupposed to be. But suddenly, instead oftrying to prove myself to others, I startedtrying to discover myself. I started discover-ing about the things that I really wanted, about the things that made me feel happy andalive. And who wouldve have known that I

would end up being a Cultural Ambassador

on TV, a Public Relations Officer, and anEnglish teacher. Many people would say thatwhat Im doing is so far off from what I hadstudied so hard for and for so long. I gradu-ated from law school in the Philippines, and Idid it because I wanted to be like my father.Because I thought it would make him proudand that it would make other people respectme.

I guess I can say that I had found peace inKorea, somehow. I especially found the Fili-

pino community very helpful. I feel greatevery Sunday whenever I go to the center. Itgives me a feeling of home. A sense of be-longingness. I still dont know what liesahead. I have my plans but then again, Goddoes have a way of changing our plans inways that we dont expect. I realized that Idont have to push too hard. I just have to domy best with whatever is given to me. Wemay search for things and chase after thingsthat are wrong for us. And yet the very thingthat we need is right before us, unnoticed. Its all up to him. All that I ask is that Hecould help me and guide me to discover more

and more of myself each day.

My Compassionate God, my healer and

my doctor, thank you for using me as

your instrument to touch and comfort

    others despite my woundedness. Thank

you for making me beautiful despite the

scars that were caused by pains and trau-

matic experiences in the past. Continue

using me, give me more courage, make

me more compassionate so that I may let

others know that they, too, are beautifuland that they can be wounded healers as

    well. Amen!
