“I doubt if I could love anyone who did not wish to see Look Back in Anger.” The Observer on Look Back in Anger at the Royal Court, 1956

In a cramped flat in 1950’s Derby, Jimmy Porter is angry, bored, and frustratedwith the limitations of life and increasing political decay. He finds release forhis pent-up emotions by attacking his upper class wife Alison, whose loyaltyto her husband is seemingly at odds with his cruelty towards her. Thecouple’s close friend Cliff provides the sounding board that they both sodesperately need to gain perspective on their tragic, co-dependentrelationship.

Jimmy Porter embodies the frustrations of a generation of working class menyearning for something they never had - lamenting the fact that “there aren’tany good, brave causes left”. A celebration of linguistic vigour, JohnOsborne’s seminal play changed the way theatre presented working classvoices on stage, coining the phrase ‘angry young men’ to describe an entiregeneration of disillusioned artists and working class young men in post-World War Two British society.

2016 marks the 60th anniversary of Look Back In Angerwhich was firststaged at the Royal Court Theatre in 1956. In 1959 it was brought to life onfilm by a cast of iconic and charismatic actors, including Richard Burton andMary Ure.
