On August 18th, after their Quiet Day, the Daughters of the King and guests walked from the chapel out to the new bench next to the columbarium where Mother Miriam said a blessing. The bench was made from that wonderful old tree that used to grace our courtyard. The tree was given to St. Andrew’s in 1950 by Mary Fane, a member of our parish and Jack Miller’s aunt. The tree survived the catastrophic fire, but finally had to be taken down. Our Junior Warden at the time, David Stidham, had the tree milled and had crosses made and sold at the first Truckin’ event. He saved some of the larger pieces to make into a bench. The Daughters of the King were honored to be able to give the making of the bench in thanksgiving for the lives of three Daughters who died in the past three years, Saranne Gehring, Shirley Lewis, and Mikala Stephens.

BLESSING OF THE BENCH

St. Andrew’s Church is continuing its participation in the Angel Tree Project, although due to the pandemic, it will look like last year rather than the previous years. We have requested 50 – 60 children to sponsor, each of whom has an incarcerated parent or parent-figure. Each prisoner applies to the prison chaplain, who passes the names on to the Angel Tree Project, a national non-profit organization. Angel Tree works with churches and other groups to find sponsors for these children. Sometimes we can’t sponsor a child because we can’t communicate with the caregiver, the caregiver does not want the child to participate, a court order prohibits the parent from having contact with the child, or the parent has been released from the prison (the best reason). For each child who can participate, members of our congregation purchase a present or presents that cost in total between $25 and $35. We give these presents in the name of the incarcerated parent, not in our names. We are just the servants of God, connecting the prisoners with their children.

You can participate in one or more ways:

• contacting caregivers to determine it is okay for children to participate and, if so, what presents the children would like; • sponsoring one or more children, buying presents, wrapping those presents, and delivering the presents to the church; • donating money for others, including the EYC, to buy presents; • buying presents with the donated money; • wrapping presents others have bought; • delivering presents to the children in December.

In November, we will set out a sign up list and make that same information available online. Unfortunately, like last year, we are not planning on having an Angel Tree Christmas party due to COVID-19. We hope to renew that tradition in 2022 because it is a fantastic experience. Thank you for everyone supports this restorative justice ministry, which makes such a difference to these children, their parents, their caregivers, and to our church family. – Deacon Chris Wrampelmeier

STORYBRIDGE/DOLLY PARTON IMAGINATION LIBRARY UPDATE

Oh man, do I have news for y'all!! Words fail me as I realize what, collectively, you have made possible. Currently, and after ONLY 6 MONTHS in existence, our little Potter/Randall County Imagination Library is providing a book a month to over 2,000 children!! Wait, there's more... There are currently 32 nonprofit organizations in the great state of Texas that have partnered with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to become a local affiliate. As you know, Storybridge became the local affiliate for Potter/Randall County in February of this year. The largest of those affiliates has been the United Way of Williamson County, providing Imagination Library for children in the NW Austin area. But as of this past Thursday, Storybridge has surpassed that affiliate and is serving more children in DPIL than any other nonprofit in the State of Texas!!

Your generosity has allowed us to say a BOLD YES to every child under 5 that we can find. Your heart to provide early literacy for children has taken many of you to festivals in the park, tailgate parties, and church meetings to help me and Jim enroll and fundraise. Your enthusiasm for this mission has inspired curiosity in your circles. YOU have made these numbers and this milestone possible!! If you are in need of some reason to celebrate today, may I humbly propose - this is SUCH a good one. I'll leave you with a recent picture of our Amira - the first Amarillo baby we enrolled back in March. In each New Book Day picture she looks a little more grown up and I realize again how fast those years go by. This group is NOT WASTING A MOMENT to help impact her future and I am so thankful! CHEERS and GOD BLESS YOU!!Chandra PerkinsStoryBridge Amarillo

NEWS FROM THE BELOVED COMMUNITY GROUP: We are taking a break from reading to focus on a few projects. The biggest one is working with Margaret Wills Elementary School. Kudos to Sharon Stone, our procurer in chief, for getting donations from WT and AC of banners, to decorate a van for their back to school event on September 9th, and getting the chips that she and Barbara Jensen passed out at that event. We will be taking snacks for the teachers monthly, and as soon as the teachers are ready for us, several volunteers will tutor or read with children at the school. Please let us Mary or Lil know if you are interested in doing that, or doing office work for the teachers (running copies, etc.) [email protected] or [email protected].

No word yet as to when the Afghan refugees will arrive in Amarillo, but there will be about 60 families, split between Refugee Services of Texas and Catholic Charities. Two specific needs there are furniture and people to welcome the families and help them get settled, which involves getting them to appointments, introducing them to Amarillo (especially Walmart) and just being a welcoming presence, including greeting them at the airport on arrival. A number of churches have volunteered teams to do this. Let us know if it would be your ministry to be part of such a team. We are planning to meet this fall on the first Sunday evening of the month (October 3, November 7, December 5) at 7PM.

Parents night out is back! PNO will be the 3rd Friday of every month. We will have pizza and a movie, and would love for your children to join the fun! The price is $10 for the first child and $5 per child after. The time is from 5:30-9:30PM. Please RSVP as we want to have enough food for everyone! If you know people that are unaware of parents night out, please spread the word.
