Living it up in Lagoi Southeast Asia’s emerging resort destination Bintan Resorts’ newly conceived Lagoi Bay is poised to enliven the largest Indonesian Riau Island’s most valuable coastal area

The Bintan Resorts enclave found in the northern part of Indonesia's Bintan island is already known for its award-winning resorts, designer golf courses, and popular recreational facilities and attractions. Being

located 45 minutes – by ferry – away from Singapore the island is a go-to getaway for many residing in mainland Singapore as well as for foreign visitors to Singapore. And now five years following Lagoi Bay in northern Bintan broke ground, business and leisure visitors alike can finally look forward to the opening of beach and lakeside resorts, upscale residential clusters, Bintan Resorts’ first beach village mall and state-of-the-art recreational amenities that will boast some of the region’s first, which will begin in Q4 of 2013. These launches firmly establish Bintan Resorts as one of Asia's leading resort and leisure destinations with sustainability and biodiversity conservation at its core, and further reinforces the ‘twin holiday destination’ status shared between Bintan Resorts and Singapore. Bintan Resorts was founded in 1990 as a collaborative initiative between the governments of Singapore and Indonesia. Mr Chia Tek Yew, Executive Director, Strategy & Marketing, Bintan Resorts International, said, “All great resort destinations offer vibrant high quality lifestyle experiences, and Bintan Resorts is certainly no exception.” “For those who have enjoyed the old and rustic Bintan, welcome to the new Bintan— a perfectly balanced haven of modern delights amidst our natural environment and old world charm. And the best part is it’s only 45 minutes from Singapore.” "By developing Lagoi Bay as a residential and commercial nucleus, we not only assure the economic sustainability of our own endeavours, but also provide for our ongoing efforts in the surrounding community to curb destructive practices and support local people who have been living harmoniously within these coastal-jungle environments for decades,"added Mr Chia. "By cultivating positive tourism in this region, we hope to pave a path for its future as a place worthy of exploration for years to come."

Mr Yeoh Hock Thye

going tHE DiStanCE WITH DELTA AIRLINESAn exclusive interview with Mr Yeoh Hock Thye, Country Manager Singapore, Delta Airlines

IRST PERSONf

Delta Air Lines is no stranger to Singapore. Having commenced services to Singapore in September 1984 (Delta Air Lines was known as Northwest Airlines then prior to the merger), are you able to share some key highlights of this near 30-year history?

We started our services to Singapore as a 2x weekly freighter flight in 1984, and introduced an additional 3x weekly passenger flight in 1989; both operated with B747-200s. Today, Delta operates a daily Singapore to US flight via our Narita hub with a B777 aircraft, equipped with full flat bed seats with direct aisle access in our Business Elite cabin and state of the art, personal in-flight entertainment in every seat throughout the aircraft.

With travel demand booming in Asia, what are your views on the regional traffic potential in 2013? Also, what is Delta Air Lines’ vision and growth plans for Singapore market?

There is undoubtedly a strong growth in regional traffic. For the Singapore market, Delta is leveraging on our hub in Narita, which positions us well for the growth in traffic between Singapore and Tokyo and Singapore and the US. We have an interline partnership with Jetstar Japan that allows us to leverage on the traffic between Singapore and interior Japanese cities beyond Tokyo. Moreover, through our hub in Narita, we are able to offer convenient one-stop flights to eight US gateway cities, namely Seattle, Minneapolis, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Detroit, Atlanta and New York . From Narita, we are also conveniently connected to Honolulu, Guam, Saipan and Palau.

What part do you see Changi Airport plays in Delta Air Lines' sustained growth in the region and the development of SIN-US market?

Singapore is a key business city in Delta’s network. The business traffic between US and Singapore is significant. Changi Airport is a great industry partner to work with to help develop the leisure and MICE market segments for the traffic between Singapore and the US.

What do you think are the key selling points of Delta Air Lines’ products & services that allow the airline to truly differentiate and stand out from others?

Over the past few years, Delta Air Lines has made significant investments in all areas that touch our customers’ experience, ranging from digital and mobile technology, reservations support,

full flat beds in Business Elite on all our wide-body aircraft, Economy Comfort seating, personal on-demand in-flight entertainment in every seat throughout the aircraft, improvements in in-flight experience, newly introduced Westin Heavenly bedding product and Tumi branded amenity kit, celebrity chef’s menu and wine selections by a master sommelier, new airport terminals and facilities including Delta Sky Club. Unlike Asian carriers which can only bring passengers to the US gateway cities, our difference is that we are able to bring customers conveniently to the interior US cities such as Salt Lake City, Milwaukee and Phoenix in one single ticket at one price; with the customer’s luggage through checked-in all the way to their final destination. For a flight from an interior city, say Milwaukee, via Minneapolis, customers are able to make a connection back to Singapore (via Narita) with an hour’s connection in Minneapolis and without having the need to transfer at different terminals and go through repetitive security screening. It is therefore really convenient to fly on Delta Air Lines from Singapore to an interior city in the US and it saves lots of time as well in transit.

Having served the airline industry for more than 23 years, what is the greatest satisfaction that you derived from your current role as General Manager of Delta Air Lines’ Singapore branch office?

Undoubtedly the greatest satisfaction I had was helping to set up the Global & Asia Pacific Call Centre in Singapore six years ago, resulting in Delta Air Lines now having 500 staff in Singapore, which offers 24/7 in selected languages to our customers in Japan, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Thailand as well as operational support to our Reservations offices in the US.

"Singapore is a key business city in Delta’s network. The business traffic between US and Singapore is significant. Changi Airport is a great industry partner to work with to help develop the leisure and MICE market segments for the traffic between Singapore and the US."

CHANGI GEARS UP TO HANDLE135 MiLLion paSSEngErS pEr annuM

A series of upcoming developments will pave the way for Changi Airport to handle 135 million passengers per annum (mppa) by the mid-

2020s, in the hope of augmenting its air hub status in the region. These developments, which will see the construction of two new passenger terminals, a mixed-use concept code named Project Jewel and a third runway, will more than double Changi Airport’s existing passenger handling capacity of 66 mppa currently housed in three terminals and supported by two runways.

TERMINAL 4In February 2013, Changi Airport announced Terminal 4 (T4), a larger and enhanced terminal which will be built on the old Budget Terminal site. With a planned capacity of 16 mppa, the new terminal is in the final stages of planning, with construction to begin by the end of the year, and operations slated to begin in 2017. Terminal 4 will be a two-storey terminal covering a gross floor area of about 190,000 square metres and will have a look, feel and ambience comparable to Changi’s existing terminals. It will primarily be designed to enable quick turnaround of flights. The airside transfer of passengers and baggage between Terminal 4 and the other three terminals will also be provided for. To cater to the future needs of airlines as their business models evolve, T4 will be designed with the flexibility to meet the operational needs of both

regional full service and low cost carriers, as well as enable airlines and ground handling agents to increase productivity and improve efficiency of processes. For example, in line with the trend of self-service options at airports around the world, T4 will provide more kiosks for self check-in, self bag-tagging and self bag-drops. In addition, departure and arrival immigration control, as well as pre-boarding security screening will be centralized for more efficient deployment of manpower and equipment. Concurrent with the development of T4, major airfield works will also be undertaken to increase the number of aircraft parking stands to support the needs of all airlines operating at Changi. A 38-hectare land plot south of Terminal 3 will be converted into an aircraft parking area to house 17 narrow-body and nine wide-body aircraft stands. Including new aircraft stands to be constructed at T4 itself, the number of parking stands at Changi Airport will be increased by 24% to more than 180.

PROjECT jEWELAnother upcoming infrastructure development, announced by the Prime Minister during his National Day Rally speech on 18 August 2013, is an iconic mixed-use complex to be built on the car park site in front of Terminal 1 (T1). Codenamed ‘Project Jewel’, the new complex is envisaged to be a world-class, signature lifestyle destination that will enable Changi Airport to capture tourism mindshare, and strongly boost Singapore’s appeal as a stopover point for global travellers. The complex will offer aviation and travel-related facilities, a wide range of retail offerings, as well as unique leisure attractions. As part of the redevelopment, T1 will also be expanded to allow more space for the arrival hall, baggage claim areas and taxi bays. These enhancements will increase the passenger handling capacity at Terminal 1 to 24 mppa. To be seamlessly connected to Terminals 1, 2 and 3, Project Jewel will serve as a node linking the terminals, improving inter-terminal connectivity. There are also plans for the complex to provide a central communal facility for the 32,000-strong airport community.

THREE-RUNWAY SYSTEM TO bE IMPLEMENTED AROUND 2020 To support the increased passenger handling capacity at Changi Airport with the development of the new Terminals 4 and 5, a three-runway system will be implemented at Changi Airport around 2020. The existing Runway 3, currently used by the military, will be extended from 2.75km to 4km to handle larger passenger aircraft. Almost 40km of new taxiways will also be built to connect the runway with the current airport and to allow for efficient aircraft movement. New facilities such as navigation aids, airfield lighting systems and a fire station will need to be built as well. Planning and preparatory works for the project have already started. For example, consultants are being appointed to advise on the specific land preparation works needed and to carry out various engineering studies. In the meantime, Changi Airport Group (CAG) will continue to work closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) to further optimize Changi Airport’s existing two runways. A study commissioned by CAAS last year, conducted by UK air navigation service provider, NATS, revealed that the two runways at Changi could handle around 32% more flights if there was better utilisation. Some recommendations had already been adopted, such as reducing the minimum interval between take-offs by aircraft of the same wake category from 2 minutes to 1.5 minutes, and reducing the duration of scheduled runway inspections by leveraging IT systems and beefing up resources to improve the efficiency of these inspections. Flight routes have also been reconfigured to increase air traffic predictability and speed restrictions have been applied to more air traffic sectors, in order to better regulate air traffic flow.

LAND EARMARkED fOR INDUSTRIAL fACILITIES Singapore’s logistics and aerospace industries are projected to continue growing robustly, driven by growing intra-Asia trade, expanding fleets of Asian carriers, as well as Singapore’s strategic location, strong connectivity and efficient infrastructure. To support the long-term growth of these sectors, land has also been set aside to the north of the new Terminal 5 for facilities for airfreight and air express operators, as well as MRO activities.

HEADROOM fOR fUTURE GROWTHThe infrastructure development plans above will bring Changi Airport’s passenger handling capacity to 135 mppa by the mid-2020s when T5 is completed. This will provide adequate headroom for passenger growth over the next few decades from the 51 million passengers currently passing through the airport. These development plans further demonstrate the strong commitment of the Singapore government and Changi Airport, to provide our airline and aviation industry partners, as well as our valued passengers, with the best possible airport facilities and superiority in connectivity for decades to come.

1,350ha current airport land

1,080ha earmarked for future airport development

Project Jewel is designed to be architecturally iconic, with a stunning glass and steel façade that presents an impressive view of the complex – from both Airport Boulevard and the sky. Designed by a consortium of design consultants led by world renowned architect Moshe Safdie, comprising Benoy and local architects RSP, a key feature of the complex is a large-scale, lush indoor garden with a breathtaking waterfall. When completed in 2018, Project Jewel, together with T4, will boost Changi Airport's handling capacity to 85 million passenger movements a year, to cater for Changi's growth into the next decade.

TERMINAL 5Over and above these developments, in late-August 2013, the Changi 2036 committee, led by Senior Minister of State Josephine Teo, announced yet another development project, this time the development of a new mega terminal at Changi Airport, to be named Terminal 5 (T5). Based on current planning, this terminal will be ready by the mid-2020s and be able to handle 50 mppa initially, making it one of the largest terminals in the world. Two conceptual options for the layout of Terminal 5 have been developed with various considerations such as passenger convenience and airfield and terminal operations efficiency in mind. T5 will be linked to the other terminals at Changi Airport. This will allow the expanded Changi Airport to be operated as a single, integrated airport for ease of transfer between different terminals, maximum passenger convenience and airfield operational efficiency. For good ground connectivity, the road infrastructure will be improved to ensure convenient access to T5. The terminal will also be connected to the Singapore underground (MRT) network and bus services to the airport will correspondingly be enhanced to ensure that all airport users and staff are able to travel to the airport easily and conveniently.

CO-HOSTING OF pEriSHabLES anD pHarMa EvEnt IN THAILAND

On 15 August 2013, Changi Airport Group (CAG), and Supply Chain Asia organized the Cold Chain Logistics Round Table discussion in Bangkok. The discussion involved

panelists, including SIA Cargo and SATS, to share on the issues faced in the transportation of temperature sensitive products such as perishables and pharmaceutical cargo. The aim of the event is to raise the awareness on Changi Airport’s cold chain handling facilities and highlight the ability for CAG’s business partners to

address the issues in handling perishables and pharmaceutical cargo. The discussion was well received, with a turnout of more than 60 participants. Following the round table discussion in Bangkok, CAG is also organizing a similar event during the Air Cargo Logistics Asia Conference (16 to 18 October 2013). This is part of CAG’s bigger efforts to boost perishables and pharmaceutical traffic between Singapore and the region.

On 2 August 2013, dnata Singapore officially launched its latest cold chain handling facility, named "dnata Coolchain". Located

within dnata's airfreight terminal (in Changi Airfreight Centre), the new facility comes in a timely manner as Changi Airport registered a 6.0% and 13.5% year-on-year growth from January to June 2013 for pharmaceuticals and perishables respectively. The completion of the new facility would boost Changi Airport’s total perishables handling capacity to more than 300,000 tonnes and provide logistics players more options when it comes to handling temperature sensitive cargo. of Singapore’s latest attractions seemed higher in Buenos Aires, and several outbound travel agents shared that they were recently in Singapore, albeit mostly for business. Nonetheless, most of the travel agents in both locations expressed interest to develop Singapore tour packages. Following the road shows, CAG, together with Singapore Airlines, also took the opportunity to exhibit in the 2013 ABAV Travel Trade Show held in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 4 to 7 September 2013 with a 100sqm booth. It was CAG and SQ’s third time participating in ABAV together, and in addition, a Singapore contingent including four other trade partners participated as well (GTMC, Siam Express, Tour East and Travel Central). There was encouraging response from visitors to the booth, some of whom displayed good knowledge of Singapore’s latest tourism attractions and are handling large MICE groups interested to Singapore. The market insights gathered from the road shows and trade show were valuable, and CAG plans to explore similar events in this region and expand our reach to other parts of South America next year. Despite the long distance, the interest of the above markets in Asia as a leisure destination is growing. More South Americans seek out cultural and unique travel experiences in Asia, and CAG is keen to tap on the rising trend.

From 6 – 29 Sep 2013, Changi Airport Group partnered with Switzerland Tourism to organise a fun-filled event at Terminal 3 entitled “Simply Switzerland”. The event gave

visitors a unique Swiss experience by presenting the diversity of food, culture and festivals that Switzerland has to offer and an exciting winter playground for the children to enjoy. Visitors also

had a chance to take part in a cow stacking challenge where the winner walks away with a trip for four to Switzerland and a unique one-time opportunity to 'own' a cow during the 2014 Summer and the cheese it produces that season. The grand prize is jointly sponsored by Switzerland Tourism and Swiss International Air Lines.

rEaCHing out TO SOUTH AMERICA CONTINENT

CAG made its first and recent contact with two big outbound markets in South American through the joint organisation of travel agent

road shows in Santiago (Chile) and Buenos Aires (Argentina) with Singapore Airlines (SQ) on 2 and 3 September 2013 respectively. The road shows were meant to raise awareness of Singapore as a refreshing Asian travel destination, Changi Airport as the preferred gateway to Asia Pacific, and to provide updates on SQ’s new products. The Santiago road show welcomed the participation of 55 outbound travel agents. During the session, it was observed that the Santiago outbound travel agents were particularly interested in attractions and tourism products such as Marina Bay Sands, Free Singapore Tour and cruises from Singapore to the region. Likewise in Buenos Aires, the event was well attended by 65 outbound travel agents. Awareness

EAST AfRICAOn 19 and 22 August 2013, Changi Airport Group (CAG), together with Singapore Business Federation (SBF), organized a business seminar in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and Kampala (Uganda) respectively. The business seminars aim to raise awareness about Singapore (as both a leisure and business destination), and Changi Airport as the preferred gateway to Asia Pacific amongst the East African business and travel trade community. On the cargo front, Changi Airport’s role as a cargo transshipment hub in Asia Pacific was highlighted as well. Other than CAG, Ethiopian Airlines (ET) also shared about their upcoming service to Singapore. Each seminar had a successful turnout of more than 100 high-level participants, ranging from local government officials and businessmen to tour operators and cargo agents. Following this initial round of business seminars in East Africa, CAG plans to also explore similar events in this region. This is also part of CAG’s bigger efforts to boost connectivity and traffic between Singapore and the African continent.

SOUTH AfRICAOn 13 August 2013, Changi Airport Group (CAG), together with Singapore Airlines (SQ) and South African Tourism (SAT), organized the inaugural South African tourism networking seminar in Hilton Singapore. This was the first of a series of events aiming to promote outbound leisure traffic from Singapore to South Africa after the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) amongst the three parties on 4 June 2012. This seminar also serves as a precursor to the parties’ participation at the recent NATAS Travel Fair 2013 as an exhibitor. Both events were supported by the South African High Commission to Singapore. Graced by the South African High Commissioner to Singapore, the seminar saw over 40 participants, representing over 25 top tour agencies in Singapore. The keynote speaker was Mr. Sadiq Dindar, Manager (Trade Relations) from SAT who specially flew to Singapore to deliver a presentation about South African tourism.

On 26 August 2013, the Singapore Tourism board (STb) launched the “In Singapore Incentives & Rewards” Programme (“INSPIRE” for short) in Mumbai. The rewards programme, catering to the Indian corporate incentives

outbound travel segment, is a partnership among STB and major Singapore tourism industry partners, such as Changi Airport Group, Gardens by the Bay, Resorts World Sentosa, Sentosa Leisure Group, Singapore Airlines, Singapore Turf Club and Wildlife Reserves Singapore. Under the INSPIRE programme, STB and its partners will leverage on Singapore’s unique, world-class attractions to boost the destination experiences of these corporate incentives groups from India. This will be achieved by providing tailored, value-added experiences for these travelers, the extent of which depending on the number of visitor-nights generated by each incentive group. Some of the possible customized experiences

for these groups include complimentary meals at the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay, sensory experiences in the Marine Life Park at Resorts World Sentosa, cocktail reception and live viewing of races at the Singapore Turf Club plus much more. Commenting on the programme, Mr Chang Chee Pey, Executive Director, South Asia, Middle East and Africa, STB, said that discerning Indian business travelers increasingly seek differentiated experiences as part of their incentive travel programme to reward top performers. INSPIRE was thus created to appeal to this growing segment by developing a selection of personalized programmes and exclusive offerings. Singapore has experienced strong growth in visitor arrivals from India over the past few years. In 2011, Singapore welcomed 870,000 visitors from India, a growth of 5% from 2010. For the first 9 months of 2012, Singapore welcomed 670,000 visitors from India, a further growth of 5% compared with the same period in the preceding year. It is hoped that the INSPIRE programme will entice more Indian incentive groups to head to Singapore for an enriching and memorable time, and further boost visitor numbers from India to Singapore.

Changi Airport and participating airlines. The ATA is aimed at encouraging the greater development of visual arts amongst the more than 400,000 students and youths in all Singapore schools. Taking on the theme of ‘Countries, Cultures & Festivals', the contest requires participants to showcase the 12 listed destinations across the globe in the form of art. Artwork can be either two-dimensional or three-dimensional and a variety of mediums can be used such as coloured pencils, inks, watercolour or acrylic paint, to name a few. Destinations include Brunei, Changsha, Chennai, Delhi, Hanoi, Helsinki, Iloilo, Istanbul, Kaohsiung, Lombok, Mumbai and Vientiane. To participate in this competition, Picasso-wannabes need to only register for an account on Achieve Thru Art’s website (www.achievethruart.com/singapore), take a photograph of their masterpiece and upload it by 21 October 2013. There will be a winner per age category for each destination, where they will win return air tickets to the particular destination. “It has been a really great opportunity to meet all the interline partners from South and North East Asia, and Australia via the bilateral meetings. Besides this, the conference has been a good chance not only to exchange commercial ideas with the registered carriers, but also to do some networking with all colleagues from different airlines in such a short time.”
