CO-LOCATIONFIONA MARRON

21 SEP - 16 NOV

GALLERY 2

PREVIEW 27 SEP, 6PM - 8PM

‘Co-location’ is a solo exhibition of new work by Fiona Marron completed while on residency at RUA RED. The exhibition encompasses elements of video and sculptural installation, which together, through a number of researched histories, examine value systems and probe the dynamic infrastructure behind current international channels of trade.

Through engaging in a process of enquiry surrounding a transformational period in Chicago’s trading history, the crossovers between the worlds of science fiction and global finance are considered within the exhibition Co-location. In focus is a key figure of that history, former chairman of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, who accredits the major changes he implemented in computerising financial trading to ideas first imagined in his sci-fi writing of the eighties. Alongside his several published titles in the line of finance, his only published sci-fi title can be seen as the catalyst for the worlds first future electronic trading platform, and a consequential step towards the proliferation of trades made globally today.

In the course of following up one such history, other tangential histories have emerged and are explored within Co-location.

Fiona Marron was born in Co. Monaghan in 1987. She graduated from Fine Art at Dublin Institute of Technology in 2009 and is currently completing an MA in Visual Arts Practice, IADT Dun Laoghaire. Solo exhibitions include ‘Last and First Men’ at The Joinery, Dublin (2011), ‘As Topic and Tool’ at The Joinery (2010) and ‘For Who Knows What’ at FOUR, Dublin (2009). Recent group exhibitions include ‘At the Level of Entity’, The LAB, Dublin (2013) ‘Construct #1’ at Monster Truck Gallery, ‘Portrait of Space’ at Clonlea Studios, Dublin (2011), ‘Hidden Memories, Lost Traces’ at Sinopale: Third Sinop Biennial, Turkey, ‘Switch: As Process’ at Catalyst Arts, Belfast (2010) and Reverse Pedagogy III, Model Arts & Niland Gallery, Sligo (2009).

The advancement of fibre optic technology has been paramount to the developments in global trading, facilitating the current widespread practice of high frequency trading (HFT), a volatile and contentious activity. As a system, its operations are internet dependent and thus rooted in a physical network of sub-sea and earth optical fibre cables, an infrastructure which also becomes relevant in the exhibitions manifestation. With questions around the importance of geographical specificity another fundamental concern, the work engages consideration around the nature of time-space compression.

BECOMINGIMPERCEPTIBLEMOLLY O’DWYER

5 OCT - 16 NOV

GALLERY 1

PREVIEW 4 OCT, 6PM - 8PM

“The Cosmos is an abstract machine, and each world has an assemblage affecting it. If one reduces oneself to one or several abstract lines that will prolong itself in and conjugate with others, producing immediately, directly a world in which it is the world that becomes, then one becomes-everybody/everything.” *

*Gilles Deleuze. Felix Guattari. A Thousand Plateaus. (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1987)

The sculptural works created for this solo exhibition by artist Molly O’Dwyer are fabricated using everyday materials such as floorboards, tiles and fencing; each brought together into an assemblage form. Some works are illuminated internally casting shadows upon the walls of the space, others are themselves projected upon. Light here is an animating force, infiltrating the structure and projecting from the assemblage forming phantoms; projections of an ephemeral landscape. Time exists in the abstract, present in the texture of the found objects and the moving image; the perception of time manufacturing a multiplicity of perspectives.

Molly O’Dwyer (b.1980) is a visual artist from Dublin. She holds an MFA from NCAD, Dublin and a first class B.A. in Fine Art from D.I.T. Recent exhibitions include: Sites For Temporary Witness at The Ballina Arts Centre, Co. Mayo,(2013) Awaiting Movement at The Werkstadt, Berlin (2012), Incubarte Festival at Museo Valenciano De La Illustración y Modernidad Valencia, Spain (2012), Les Concordances Du Temps, The Darling Foundry, Montréal, Québec (2012). She is currently artist in residence at RUA RED 2012/13.www.mollyodwyer.com

The artist here uses the materiality of the works to transect the narratological into vibrating particles of past present and future. The frame of reference therefore is essentially one of becoming: becoming-molecular, becoming-assemblage, becoming-imperceptible.

This exhibition is curated by Dr. Hilary Murray.

WINTER OPEN

PREVIEW 22 NOV, 6PM - 8PM

RUA RED is pleased to present the Winter Open Show in Gallery 1, an annual exhibition of work chosen from an open submission call. We received our largest ever amount of submissions and after a tough selection process the work of over 30 artists were chosen.

This year’s selection panel consisted of independent curators who have significant experience in the field of contemporary art; Paul McAree (Director and curator FLOOD), Grace McEvoy (Visual Arts Co-ordinator, Block T), Karen Phillips (RUA RED Executive Director) and Claire McAree (Independent Curator). They have further selected a shortlist for the RUA RED Art prize, the winner of which will be awarded a solo show to take place during 2014.

This year sees the introduction of the People’s Choice Award, sponsored by The Square Shopping Centre. The winner of this award will be determined by visitors to the exhibition, who will vote on their favourite piece. The prize of €1000 will go to the artist with the most votes.

At this year’s exhibition you will discover sculptures, wooden and plastic installations, stunning photography work and exceptional prints, drawings and paintings. (All works for sale.)

Garrett Power’s first Solo Exhibition entitled Spectrum, is comprised of a large scale sculpture installation accompanied by some recent paintings that explore elements of colour and light perception. The piece, a large pyramid structure consists of hundreds of coloured batons of wood. Structural elements including weight, balance and tension are fundamental components in this work.

Using “chance” as a method for the selection process of each colour, the artist aims to remove himself from his own preconceived notions of colour. Constructed using a void system that allows natural and artificial light to pass through and create a temporal shift of colour perception as the viewer passes by and around the sculpture, the construction of the installation is an intrinsic part of the work just as the visual aspect is. Garret Power was the winner of the Winter Open Show 2012 for which he was awarded this solo show.

HB: Who are you? / What are you all about?JC: I am an audio/visual artist. In my work I often make sound, visual and text compositions that explore aspects of language, voice and narrative.

HB: What are you working on right now/what projects are you currently involved in?JC: I’m making a sound and text composition at the moment. It is titled The Words Beginning With A, With the Sounds of Their Beginning. I’m hoping to show this at Tulca Visual Arts Festival in Galway in November this year.

HB: How did you get into this line of work?JC: Em I guess I always loved to draw - so thought maybe I’d go to Art College. Knowing very little about contemporary art at that time I’ve since been fascinated with making and thinking through and about materials.

HB: What are your favourite medium/materials to work in?JC: I mostly end up working with sound, text or video. Sometimes I draw but more as a way of thinking through something. Sound is often where I’ll start - I carry a sound recorder with me most of the time.

Page 27: Oct dec online

24

HB: What is a normal day in your studio like? / Where were you working from before RUA RED studio?JC: Before RUA RED I had a studio with Pallas Projects/Studios based in The Coombe, in Dublin. My day in the studio varies; sometimes I’m out and about recording sounds or video. In the studio I spend time listening, watching and editing material and sometimes researching. I usually start the day in the studio at 9am if possible and stay until I’m not getting anywhere or Ill sometimes go off and come back in the evening.

HB: What are some of your favourite projects you’ve worked on?JC: I don’t think I have favourite projects. I guess though I’ve made a few works based on the subject of laughter that I’ve really enjoyed and it’s something I keep wanting to return to play with more.

HB: Have you ever worked with any famous people? JC: No, I don’t think so.

HB: Who are you? / What are you all about?PB: I am Peter Baxter a musician, songwriter and artist and I founded Songschool 13 years ago and Createschool 4 years ago. These projects encourage creativity via music and digital multimedia respectively.

HB: What are you working on right now/what projects are you currently involved in?PB: We usually have several projects and workshops on the go at any one time so life is never dull. I am finishing two cross border school projects for Cooperation Ireland at the minute, preparing for some workshops in The Ark in October, finalizing some evening courses called “Digitally Creative” in RUA RED starting in October and a Halloween Songschool in The National Concert Hall. In the meantime our schools based workshops have already recommenced so we are visiting schools all over Ireland between now and June.

HB: How did you get into this line of work?PB: I grew up in Australia and was a singer / songwriter touring my second album in the Northern Territory, supporting an Indigenous Australian Songwriter called Archie Roach, when I had an idea to gather some songs together by established and emerging artists based on storytelling and to put together a workshop for schools. It took a lot longer to research and put the project together and then not long after I came to Ireland on tour got offered a record deal and stayed. The workshop idea

was then adapted and modified when I was asked to deliver a workshop to a TY group in a local school. It worked and soon after Songschool was born! Createschool came about when we started using technology in our music workshops. We try to use a lot of open source software and various mobile devices and to encourage participants to explore the creative capabilities these offer. Apple saw the work we were doing in schools with their technology and invited me to become involved in their Distinguished Educator and Professional Development Programmes.

HB: What is a normal day in your studio like? PB: Usually pretty hectic as I tend to be in the studio on average 1 - 2 days a week and in schools the rest of the week. It is very easy and normal for a studio day to be taken up with meetings and then following up on those meetings as well as some admin. I try and have some time devoted to doing something fun like trying out an app, recording a song or piece of music or making something.

HB: What are some of your favourite projects you’ve worked on?PB: There have been so many projects and workshops that it is hard to select some. I always enjoy The National Concert Hall and we are in there several times a year, I love working on projects in The Ark in Temple Bar, I really like our Createschool Project each summer in El Prat De Llobregat (Barcelona) which is now in its 5th year and I genuinely still love walking into a school and meeting the teachers and students. I am lucky to sometimes get to travel to places I wouldn’t have otherwise been to and deliver workshops, places like Croatia, France, Germany and Spain. Createschool’s DIGItales Digital Storytelling project in The Riverbank Arts (Kildare) and The Visual (Carlow) this Summer was really enjoyable and involved lots of work with iPads which can only be fun. HB: Any upcoming projects you want to plug? PB: Yes Createschool are running a series of short courses each Wednesday evening in November called Digitally Creative. It will run in two time slots - one for teenagers and one for adults. It takes place in the Mac Lab in RUA RED and will be hands on and enjoyable! (See listings section for full details.) We ran some successful drop in sessions and workshops for both The Gathering and Culture Night in September.
