20th Annual Hotel Security Award Presentation Ceremony 2015
TheAnnualHotelSecurityAwardPresentationCeremonywasheldon22October2015atNovotelSingaporeClarkeQuay.
The Guest-of-Honour for the event was Mr. Amrin Amin,ParliamentarySecretary,MinistryofHomeAffairs.
A record number of 83 hotels were recognised at the 20theditionoftheannualawardceremony.67hotelswereawardedtheHotelSecurityExcellenceAwardwhileanother16hotelsreceivedtheHotelSecurityAward.

Celebrating 21 Years of Kindness in the Hotel Industry
The SHA/SKM Service Gold - The NationalKindness Award Ceremony, took place on 24November 2015 at The Ballroom, Raffles HotelSingapore.
This edition of the event marked 21 years ofcollaboration between SHA and the SingaporeKindness Movement (SKM). The event wasgraced byMr HengChee How, SeniorMinisterof State, Prime Minister’s Office and was wellattended by close to 200 award recipients andguests.
87award recipients from52participatinghotelswererecognisedattheawardceremonyandeachofthemreceivedacertificateandcollarpinfromtheGuest-of-Honour,MrHengCheeHow.
The Gracious Guest recognition, which wasinauguratedatthesameeventin2013,receiveda total of 6 nominations from hotels for 2015.Thisawardseekstoappreciateguestswhohaveexhibitedexemplarygraciousness to theservicestaffatourlocalhotels.
3 of our overseas guests nominated for theGraciousGuestrecognitionreceivedtheirawardpersonally at the ceremony. These guestsweresingledoutfortheawardforshowingappreciation,empathy, understanding and thoughtfulnesstowardsservicestaff.
Following the successful partnership last year,theSHAandSKMonceagaincollaboratedwiththeBoys’Town toorganiseaneducational visitto SHATEC on 3 November 2015 where 14 oftheirresidentslearnedtobakecookiesandmakesimple sandwiches. This year’s visit was alsoextendedtotheoutreachcentreofBoys’Town.

SHATEC took part in theWDA’s Lifelong Learning Festivalheld on 7 and 8 November 2015 at the Lifelong LearningInstitute.

SHATECInstitutescelebratedits30thGraduationCeremonyattheUniversityCulturalCentre(UCC)on20November2015.TheceremonywasgracedbyGuest-of-Honour,DrKohPohKoon,MinisterofStateofTradeandIndustry.Theceremonyhosted more than 500 attendees, including graduandsscholarship recipients, board directors, industry partners,parents and guests. Mr Harmil Singh, SHATEC’s alumnusand now President and CEO of Compass Hospitality, alsotook timeoff hisbusy schedule togivean inspiringspeechencouraging the graduands as they embark on their nextchapteroflife’sjourney.

1) What is your most memorable experience whilst as a student at SHATEC?
The friendship, camaraderie, team bonding formed throughproject works, group discussions, practical trainings, classgatherings, etc during SHATEC days are something that Ivalue to this day and such is the spirit that any successfulorganizationshouldhave.
2) Share with us your success story and how SHATEC has played a part in your career development through the years.
Having an education at SHATEC provided me with thetheoreticalandpracticalknowledgeofthehospitalityindustry.Thevaluableknowledgeearnedthroughmyattachmentintheindustry was the most important knowledge learnt throughhands-onlifeexperiences.Thepracticaltrainingalsofuelledmy passion in the service industry as being operationallyinvolved allowedmeto interactwithguestsandstaff,whereI could continually seek feedback and improvements.This provided me with a better insight of hotel operationsand helped to mould me into a customer-centric person.Additionally,itgavemeapersonalsenseofsatisfactionwhenI put a smile on customers’ face or when my service wasreciprocated with customers’ compliments even up to thisday.
SHATEChasprovidedmeaheadstarttomyhospitalitycareeras it opened up new opportunities for me to meet peoplefromallwalksoflifeduringmyone-yearattachmentandgavemeampleopportunitiestogrowandtryoutdifferentrolestounderstandthehoteloperationsbetterandrealisewheremypassionandtalentlies.
3) What is your advice to current SHATEC students on how to be successful in the hospitality industry?
Alwayslovewhatyoudo;thisinnatepassionwillsustainyouthroughthetoughestoftimesandhelpgetyouthroughchallengesthatyoumayface.Thisappliesgenerallyinlife.Ofcourseithelpsifyoustayexcitedandwelcomechangesthatcomealongaschange is truly theonlyconstant. Inhospitality,wewill continueoffering regularserviceextraordinarilywell, insteadofoverdoinglotsofextraordinarythings.

STB-Commissioned Research Highlights Four Distinct Profiles and Country-Level
Differences of Travellers in Asia
Singapore, 22 October 2015 –AsianBusinessTravellersarenowenjoyinggreaterautonomyanddemandingmoreflexibletravel policies, according to the findings of a commissionedreport on “Asian Business Travellers” released by theSingaporeTourismBoard(STB)today.MorethanhalfofAsianBusinessTravellersviewworktripsfundamentallyasatravelexperience,with69percentofthemexercisingmorefreedomwhenchoosingtheirairlinesorhotels.
Conducted by McKinsey & Company, the “Asian BusinessTravellers” report surveyed over 2,500 people across fivekeymarketsinAsia–Singapore,India,Indonesia,JapanandChina,which representmore than78.8%ofAsia’sbusinesstravel spend. The research also analysed booking andspendingpatterns fromdataprovidedbyAmadeusandVisarespectively, which revealed further behavioural insights ofmodern-dayAsianBusinessTravellers.
Asia’s Empowered Travellers – Where Business Meets Leisure
Withtravellersplacingastrongassociationbetweenbusinessandleisuretravel,keytothestudyishowthebusinesstravelindustryhasbecomesusceptibletothesamedisruptiveforcesof the leisure travel market. For example: both online andmobiledigitalplatformsaregainingpopularityastravelbookingchannels, sharing economy accommodation is increasinglyconsideredas lodgingoptions forcorporate travel,and low-costcarriersarecapturingagreatershareofbusinesstravelexpenditures–some41percentofAsianBusinessTravellerssurveyedhaveevenindicatedtheirwillingnesstoflylow-costcarriersforbusiness.
Empoweredbytheseevolvingtraveltrendsandinfluxoftravelchoices,53percenthaveacknowledgedconvenienceas theprimereasonfordeviatingoutsideofcompanytravelpolicies.In fact, convenience supersedes other factors for AsianBusinessTravellerswhenplanningtheirbusinesstrips,andisatoppriorityacrossvariousages,culturesandcompanytypes.
Asian Business Travellers – Distinct, Diverse, Dynamic
While the riseofAsianBusinessTravellersposes significantopportunitiesfortheindustry,travelcompanieswillfirstneedto understand the distinctive characteristics of the region’sheterogeneous markets. The study revealed four distinctarchetypes of Asian Business Travellers, eachwith differentmotivations of travel. Differences between travellers fromemergingordevelopedmarkets,whosehabitsandpreferenceswere largely influenced by their home country and culturalbackground.
Stereotypical Suits: Thesemadeup32percent ofthosesurveyed,andweretypicallytravellersover35years old (61% of Stereotypical Suits) who valuedconvenience above other factors. This archetypeismorepronounced in India than in othermarkets,where travellers aremore adept at adopting digitalplatformstofacilitatetravelprocesses.
Service Seekers: Accounting for another third ofthose surveyed, Chinese and Indonesian businesstravellersformthebulkofthisgroup(59%ofServiceSeekers)whoplaceahighpremiumonserviceandother ‘feel good’ factors. These travellers tend tolook for distinctive travel experiences,with 94%ofthe segment willing to pay for additional services–making them themost lucrative targets for traveloperators.
Points Maximisers: Comprising a majority ofSingaporeansandJapanesebusinesstravellers(67%ofPointMaximisers),thisgroupseestravellingasanopportunity tomaximise loyalty rewards,prioritisingcomfortovercost–only25percentofthemarewillingto fly low-cost carriers. Interestingly, Singaporeansand Japanese are more budget-conscious thantravellersfromothercountries.
Belt Tighteners: This segment of travellers (17%of those surveyed) is the most value-conscious,73percent ofwhich travelmostly arounddomesticmarkets.
Travel operators will thus have to offer more individualisedtravelexperiences,whilstensuringgreaterlevelsofserviceandconvenienceatthesametime.
