AUGUSTON TRADITIONAL ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER OCT 4, 2013 AUGUSTON HTTP://AUGUSTON.SD34.BC.CA Last Friday night our school, once again, became a hub for building community within Auguston. Thanks to a committed group of parents we were able to pull off one of the most successful Fun Fairs I have ever been a part of. It was a true example of the power of teamwork. It was an evening that reflected the direction we are headed as a school . . . building community through collaboration, commitment and collective efforts, and doing it all for kids. I want to thank everyone for showing your support by attending the evening and giving such wonderful feedback through gestures of appreciation and thanks to the committee members who organized the evening. This event does not just happen ‘over night’ ~ it has been in the works since we completed the first Fun Fair at the end of last September. As we pass this legacy forward, we are looking for new parents to step forth and support this event for the 2014/2015 school year. Please make it a point to come out to one of our next PAC meetings to find out more about the successes we had with Fun Fair this year, what it will look like in the upcoming years, and how you can become involved. On Friday, we had Cops For Cancer come and visit our school to send the message about the need for all of us to continue to raise money to find a cure for cancer. Our leadership team introduced our guests and Mr. Lande made the connection between Cops for Cancer and the Terry Fox Run. In the afternoon, Mr. Lande led our school in an organized run for Terry Fox. The purpose of the run was again to raise awareness and support the research that is going on to find a cure to cancer. Thank you to all our parents, students and staff for your support.

Last Friday night our school, once again, became a hub for building community within Auguston. Thanks to a committed group of parents we were able to pull off one of the most successful Fun Fairs I have ever been a part of. It was a true example of the

power of teamwork.

Lande led our school in an

organized run for Terry Fox. The purpose of the run was again to raise awareness and support the research that is going on to find a cure to cancer. Thank you to all our parents, students and staff for your support.

We continuously look for examples of excellence that represent the vision we have as a traditional school. There is no doubt that the community events (i.e.: Fun Fair) are examples of things that are pushing us in the right direction. So also are the new experiences we are offering to our students, in terms, of extracurricular experience. Our Grade 4 and 5 Cross Country runners were given the chance to take part in the Lafarge Cross Country Meets. We have finished up week three and have one more to go before we move on to another sport. We have not only participated, but we have also competed. We have climbed to the top of the charts and are sitting in first place going into the final week. We are very proud of the work our Cross Country team is doing, the results they are achieving, and also of the fantastic leadership of Mr. Lande, Mr. Lawson and Mr. Ketelaar a s t h e t e a m ’ s coaches. Good luck in the last race, C ro s s C o u n t r y Team!

Over weekends and during after school times we would like to ask for everyone’s cooperation in keeping our grounds clean. Please make sure any garbage you see is picked up and placed in our garbage cans. Should you have a dog, and are taking it for a run on the weekend, can you please make sure no mess is left behind. Our goal is always to have our playground cleanliness reflect the standard we have in keeping things orderly. Thank you for taking the time to help with caring for and looking after our grounds.

Each week o u r s t a f f members are w o r k i n g together to

come up with plans for teaching different skills and strategies around social responsibility. This is our goal direction for the year as a school. We want to give kids the knowledge and get them to apply their learning in situations that require them to think for themselves. The term ‘Critical Thinkers’ is a concept that describes individuals who can look at a problem and work through it by themselves because they have the necessary skills. Each grade group has selected specific areas from the curriculum that they are going to focus on. Through classroom and school newsletters, we will be sharing i n f o r m a t i o n a b o u t o u r s o c i a l responsibility goal in the months ahead. We are looking forward to continued success in our school goal as the year moves forward, and to having you, parents as our partners, in the process.

At our monthly PAC meeting our executive does a wonderful job of bringing forth many topics for discussion. Being effective at communicating is something we strive to be highly competent at with all our families. At times, things go out in electronic form in emails as reminders of events coming up or things that we would like people to be aware of. We try our best to link these with the things going on with our PAC so we are in alignment in communicating together as best as we can. We would like to encourage parents to come out to our PAC meetings to share your thoughts and feelings about things. Once PAC meetings are done, a recap and Minutes are sent out for people to read through. Please take the bit of time needed to read these as well as keeping up to date by reading our biweekly school newsletter. Your help in making sure everyone is ‘in the loop’ about things is appreciated. Thank you.
