As Catholic Christians, we are the Body of Christ. Jesus said, “You are salt of the earth and the light of the world.’ It is our civic responsibility to vote. Thomas Jefferson stated, “We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” The Church calls us to vote with a well-informed conscience. “The con-science is the voice of God resounding in the human heart, re-vealing the truth to us and calling us to do what is good while shunning what is evil.”* In last week’s bulletin letter, Fr. Rey stated that the Church calls us to set our eyes more on moral principals than on the latest polls; the needs of the weak than on the benefits of the strong, the pursuit of the common good than on the demands of the narrow interests.” As you walk into the polling booth or prepare your write-in ballot, will you re-member first to pray? PEACEMAKERS We are Peacemakers In this election season, we are called to be peacemakers. We dream of a better, more peaceful world for our families. Fear sometimes inhabits us as we seek to move forward. But imagine our ancestors – Moses especially – who was told to send his people into the unknown. He was standing on a precipice, looking into the unknown future, needing to make a choice. Making the right choice may seem difficult, but it is not. Moses said, “Uvarcharta Chayim” Choose Life. We stand on a precipice, as Moses did. In order to find peace, we need to choose life. Martin Luther King stood on the same precipice looking to an unknown future. He said, “We are now faced with the fact that the future is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this life we have a choice and we must not neglect to make the moral choice.” We are at a moral crossroads and we must not let fear inhibit our pathway to peace. We need to safe-guard our Christian values - that ours is a just society wherein all must be assured of their fundamental rights. It is the teaching of the ancient prophets that “few are guilty but all are responsible.” We need to re-member that we must act for justice to occur because if we are silent, greater atrocities can occur. We must all stand together to reaffirm the values we hold dear, to empower one another, to embrace hope, and to Choose Life.
