Whites Needed What Are You Doing...with your white pants and shirts that won’t fit again by next wearing? Do you have a college-bound student? Whites left at home, taking up space? Bring ‘em in! Barely squeezed that growing child into their whites for Fair? Bring ‘em in (the whites not the child of course). Please bring them into the 4-H office soon, so someone else can use them (and I don’t mean next August). There are events throughout the year for which our kids can wear their uniforms (Achievement Night, Presentation Day, Draft Horse Classic to name a few. I know many of us have enjoyed the use of the extra whites kept at the office, because last time I was there...there was one pair of pants left. That’s free-cycling at it’s best! Way to go Nevada County 4-H keeping our county GREEN! Anonymous 4-H Parent

LARGE GROUPS GOING TO DC AND CAL FOCUS TRIPS Twenty delegates and chaperones means this will be the largest group ever to go on the citizenship trips. They already started fundraising at the Draft Horse Classic Food Booth. A special thanks to Joe Lester and members of the Penn Valley and Chicago Park clubs who helped fill shifts. It will be very difficult to make enough money for such a large group-so we are asking for your help.

How you can help us raise the money for the trips: 1. Buy a calendar - at the office, at Achievement Night, at County Council or your own club meeting, Calendars make great Christmas gifts - everyone needs a calendar! 2. Donate boxes, wrapping paper, tape, ribbons and bows, tissue paper for Christmas gift wrapping 3. Plan now to attend the Spaghetti Dinner and Cake Auction Saturday March 10, 2012 4. Donate or purchase a cake or silent auction item 5. More ideas are in the making - stay tuned Thank you for your continued support year after year!! Sue Ramey, County citizenship coordinator

Misty Mountain 4H 9/26 Club Meeting This month we held our meeting at Round Table in Grass Valley. We started at 6:30pm on Monday, September 26th. After the formalities we were excited to introduce five new members: Preston, Shelby, Jewel, Jonas, and Ezra. We moved on to discuss the window display "Revolution of Respon-sibility" and we are all writing how we have helped our community and how we will continue to help in the future. We get to decorate the window in Foothill Mercantile. I was happy to hear how well our projects did at the fair. We had lots of firsts and best of breeds as well as Best lightweight and Reserve. Jacob Ferguson got Best in Show and Courtney McCullough got Best Opposite Lightweight and won the Breeders Class. In the Costume contest for rabbits and poultry we had 8 entries and lots of awards for most humorous, original, and peoples choice. Sally Shilling, Eli, Chana, Jared Ferguson, Ashley, Courtney, and Brittany McCullough won various catego-ries including peoples choice, most humorous, most original, and look alike. Eli got first in Jr. show-manship and 2nd in Sr. for rabbits. Ashley got 2nd in Market Eggs. The McCulloughs incubated eggs for the Eggubator display for the public to watch chicks hatch. Misty Mt 4H has decided to go for GOLD! The gold seal that is. Our leader read the requirements that must be met in order to get it. We also talked about new projects which include Cooking and Cake decorating, Astronomy, Pulp engineering (paper crafts), Outdoor Adventure. It will be an excel-lent year for club members! There are fundraisers coming up like Trick or Treat so Others Can Eat (TOTSOCE) where we collect food and money for the Nevada County Food Bank. We are also selling bags of Mandarin oranges. I am sure we will want to do caroling for the seniors again. They really enjoyed that as much as we did. Other topics of discussion included presentations, snacks, meeting dates, and enrollment. We also plan to do our swim party again this year and invite another club to join us. Thank you, Kiah Hadley Misty Mountain 4H 7/9 End of Year Pool Party On July 9th our club Met at the pool in Pioneer Park, Nevada City. Before we swam we gave out pins and had a candle lighting and officer installation ceremony for the new officers. President: Cody Lip-pold, Vice Pres: Kaitlin Williams, Secretary: Elizabeth Lippold, Treasurer: Courtney McCullough, Re-port: Kiah Hadley, Sergeant at Arms: Ashley McCullough and Max Lippold, and Historian: Eli Fergu-son. Everyone brought some food to share and the club provided chicken and drinks. I brought cup-cakes. We enjoyed swimming but the lifeguards were strict. I guess they were just doing their job. The food was good and we had fun being able to play and swim with each other. One cool thing that happened was that there was a fledgling bird, someone thought it was a sparrow, that would eat right out of our hand. It was so cute! Thank you, Kiah Hadley Bi-County Officer Training By Rachel Bousfield Hi my name is Rachel. I just went to the recent Bi-County 4-H Officer Training on October 1 . Become a part of the Guide Dog Puppy Raising team! Lisa McClelland (530) 432-0445 [email protected]

Qualified raisers receive pups when they are approximately 8 weeks old. While puppies are placed in homes, puppy raisers house train the pups, teach them basic obedience and good manners, and above all socialize them to the world. As a Guide Dog puppy raiser, no prior experience is necessary, because you will become a part of a Guide Dog puppy-raising club, receive instructional materials and have local expert guidance. The contribution of our raisers is paramount to the success of our dogs as guides. Becoming a puppy raiser has many rewards, among them the reward of helping to prepare a Guide Dog for someone who is blind or visually

impaired. Are you interested in learning more about the Guide Dog puppy-raising program? Call or email Lisa for more information..

Calling All GRASS VALLEY GRASSHOPPERS!!! We are starting our new chapter in our Jr. Master Gardening book. We will be doing more exciting things with plants and soils. Last years group really enjoyed eating some of their projects that were made at our meetings. Ask them about how they like JMG Riley Sether, Derik Godfrey and Catherine Snook. Our last meeting we made sunflower seeds. Took them right off the flower, baked, salted and ate them. Yummmmy!! Soon we will be making rain gauges, become spiders and made webs, make toad homes and many more project thru the year. We try to meet twice a month on Saturdays. As long as you make the minimum project

required hours you can count this as a project in your green book. Remember Achievement Night (October 22nd)is coming and our first year Grass Valley Grasshoppers will be getting their first pen for their hats. This is a county group so anyone can join. Please call or email if you are interested in joining. 268-0812 [email protected] Jr. Master Gardening Coordinator Connie Godfrey

FABRIC NEEDED: Meadowlarks Sewing Group is going to sew children's, older babies and young teens hospital gowns and donate them to Sierra Nevada Hospitals children's ward. The teens are having to wear the adult gowns, not cool! I'm asking our clubs and their families to look in your closets and if you find suitable children's material that no one ever got around to sewing up & if you would like to donate them to us it would really be appreciated. We could also use buttons, snaps and bias tape too. One of the nurses has already loaned me a couple gowns to make patterns from, I've got nine cut out and started so far.

My suggestion is to bring items to your Community Club meetings, I can come pick them up or maybe someone in the club can deliver the items to the 4-H office. Or my home near LOP, 10708 Sierra Rose Court, off W. Hacienda Dr., Grass Valley. Anything you think would look good on little children and teen agers. You can call me at 268-2214 or the 4-H Office 273-4563. Thank you so very much, Doris Dixon
