WATCH “Ghost Hunters,” “Ghost Trackers,” “Ghost Adventures,” and all the other ghost shows on TV. I scan through the channels until I can find something

relating to the paranormal. Yes, this is called addiction. My first ghostly encounter was when I was about 10 or 11. Of course, it was a dark and stormy night…or not…he was standing over my bed wearing a trench-like coat and a fedora-type hat and reminded me of my Uncle Charlie (who was still liv-ing at that time). It was brief, fleeting, and a few seconds later when I dared to peek out from under the covers, the apparition was gone. I later wondered if it may have been my paternal grandfather who died in his 30s, many decades before I was born; his name was Charles, too.

DOn’T gO up THE STaIRS My dad bought the old log cabin—built most likely in the late 1800s—on the property next door to our lake cabin. I remember visiting Old Man Lars who lived there when I was really young and he used to say, “Don’t go up the stairs [out-door stairs which led to a loft bedroom] because there’s an Indian up there.” I later thought he just didn’t want us to play on the rickety stairwell. We eventually tore down the log cabin and my parents built a fancy new home and we moved from town to live at the lake. It started early after we moved in: The knocking from inside the upstairs bathroom, the steps on the stairs, someone turning the door handles to our bedrooms, and the cold spot at the top of the stair-

well just outside the bathroom and our bedrooms. My mother experienced several frightening experiences in her downstairs bedroom where she was held down, para-lyzed, and the bed covers were removed. I freaked out one day when I was taking a shower in the upstairs bathroom and I dis-tinctly felt two hands massaging my neck and shoulders. I hated being alone in the new house because sometimes I felt like someone was in there watching and my hair would stand on end. HOuSE OF DIvORcE Everyone in the family experienced paranormal stuff. It was the beginning of the end for my parents…they were divorced several years later. The next fam-ily that bought the home also divorced, and the next and the next. Remember: We still had our original lake cabin next door to this property so we witnessed an

unusual number of divorces associated with house selling. I believe that psychic sensitivity comes through one’s lineage. My maternal grandfather told us of seeing little people in the forests in Finland where he was born. My mother was psychically gifted as is my sister Dee, co-publisher of Essential Wellness. When my daughter was three, she said she saw little angels surround-ing her bed. At about five or six she com-mented on the little balls of light that had followed us into the house from outdoors and at 12 she unwittingly magnetized her camera film with images of tree spirits, river spirits lined up over the river to get their “head shots” taken, as well as other non-descript ghostly images from the out-door area of our home. In recent years she was visited by an other-worldly entity who she emphatically asked to leave saying she

wasn’t interested in dealing with this kind of visitation. It, of course, did leave. We do, after all, have some choice in who we want to hang out with. The family on my father’s side was very conservative Methodists. However, appearances can be deceiving. When sorting through my dad’s sister’s belongings after she died, we found a set of fortunetelling cards, worn soft and dogged-eared by, per-

haps, daily use. Who knew? This said to me that societal conditioning against the para-normal and psychic cannot contain a soul who seeks answers from within and is driven to explore unconventional knowledge. My aunt was most probably gifted psychically just like the other side of the family. I was with her when she was dying and she told me she was talking to Jesus. I believed her. I believe it’s important for us to develop multidimensional awareness at

this time. All the TV shows and films about the paranormal are readying our mass consciousness for the next great fron-tier: The expansion into space and other-dimensional realities as well as for the mutations of life needed for survival and evolution of our species on this planet.

E ARE amidst the perfect storm of economic chaos and individual reawakening. The world as we knew

it, businesses built upon the manpower of “unthinking” individuals, will never be the same. People all over the world have reinvented themselves as a result of unex-pected layoffs and life transition. The days of mass corporate exploitation are over and the dawn of the extraordinary individual has begun. Amanda Svedarsky spent her career in leadership positions building high-per-

forming teams for corporations. A driven advocate for the extraordinary potential in every employee she created Angels and Emails LLC, a career and empowerment services company, and designed The Foot-prints Forward Program to ignite the hid-den potential within individuals and insti-tutions around the globe. Her work for institutions includes: Performance improvement, management, & operational excellence; consulting; insti-tutional reinvention and logos; empower-ment workshops; personal & professional coaching and for individuals: Personal logos; industry-targeted resumes and cover letters; career coaching.

Svedarsky bridges who indi-viduals are as people (angels) with what they do professionally (emails) to align organizational strategic objectives with the personal and professional performance goals of indi-viduals. Her motto: “Formalize what you stand for. Focus on your vision. Footprint on your tomorrow.”

AUTUMN IS my favorite time of the year. I love the colors and scents of the season, the cool weather, and very much enjoy preparing for Hal-

loween festivities with my family. Hal-loween itself conjures up fond childhood memories of trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins, and, of course, telling ghost stories. I remember when I was little, one particular late autumn night when my aunts, cousins, sisters and I, sat around the candle-lit living room of the little house I grew up in. I was nestled snuggly in my Aunt Jeanne’s arms as the grown-ups talked about experiences with ghost hunting, Ouija boards and spirit sight-ings, stories of paranormal phenomenon and psychic ability that reached back generations through our family history. I was fascinated by stories of my great grandmother who reported encounters with the apparition of a f loating nun she often saw, hanging invisible clothes on an invisible clothesline. My mother shared stories of hearing music before family members passed on and of hear-ing disembodied voices. She discussed vivid, prophetic dreams and many of them came to pass within a short time

of her having had them. I was thrilled to learn all of this as I, too, had visions of the dead, found them in my dreams and often woke up to find them stand-ing beside my bed. I seemed to always have goose bumps the size of small dogs running rampant across my body from feeling things I could not see. When I did see the dead, they looked just as alive as I am writing this. I remember feel-ing comfort that night the stories were shared. I felt safe knowing I could share my experiences, too.

unDERSTanDIng THE OTHER SIDE As I got older and the feelings and visions intensified, the “gifts” no longer seemed as such. I was scared more than I wasn’t and that fear stayed with me until I was 26. My mother died quickly of cancer when I was 26 and through that beautiful, profound experience I was able to allow myself the opportunity to understand what seemed to have been inf licting itself upon me my whole life. Witnessing her death allowed me the gift of seeing who and what exists on the Other Side. I saw my grandparents, aunts and uncles, and even my child-hood dog, Nellie, coming to greet her as she transitioned. I was allowed to feel

the absolute euphoria that comes with going Home. I knew then, even in the face of grief, that it was time to face my fears about the spirit world and get to work helping others find the peace the experience of my mother’s transition from life to afterlife offered me. I faced those fears by educating myself. I became hungry for knowl-edge and understanding of who I am and gathered it through books, classes, and discussion with like-minded souls. I learned that goose bumps are one way your body lets you know a presence is near you. I learned that pennies do fall from Heaven and that the faint scent of a loved one’s signature scent linger-ing on the air is not a coincidence, but a sign from beyond that they are near. I learned that not all paranormal encoun-ters are the stuff of scary Halloween ghost stories, but are the ways in which the spirits of those we’ve loved and lost offer us comfort, let us know they are still here, and that we are loved beyond measure.

Fear not the thumps that go bump in the night

AM an intuitive feng shui practitioner, interior designer, and I do energy balancing and ghost clear-ing. I combine my experi-ence in hands-on-healing

and medium work with my feng shui train-ing to help “heal” homes and businesses. While working with clients, I can deter-mine the types of energy in spaces and how this may be affecting them. While clearing and balancing the energy, I use a combina-tion of techniques along with the client’s energy and intentions. There can be a lot of reasons that a home or business may have negative or depressed energy—a previous owner may have had hardships or emotional losses leaving behind depressed energy, the land that the structure was built on may have unusual energy of its own, a traumatic event may have occurred in the building, or there may be spirit or ghost activity. Every situation is different and I usu-ally won’t know what is needed until I arrive on the job. I do get a psychic “impres-sion” of the energy in the space while I’m speaking to the client and/or getting ready for the actual appointment. Still, there are other layers of activity that I usually won’t experience until I’m in the actual space. I sometimes get physical symptoms as clues.

For instance, if there’s negative, sad, or heavy energy, I may feel nauseous or have a heavy feeling on my chest (making it hard to breathe). Some of the clearing tech-niques I use include feng shui adjustments, feng shui blessings, smudging, and sounds. Ghost or spirit activity will also cause unbalanced or negative energy in your home or office. You may suspect that you have a ghost if you have an anxious or fore-boding feeling when you are in that space, items are missing or moved, your immune system is weakened causing chronic illness, pets acting peculiar, unusual smells, or see-ing movement or flashes of light. There are always spirits around us; we just don’t notice them until something unusual happens to get our attention. An occasional visit from a deceased relative or friend is nothing to be alarmed of. You only need to get help or call a ghost buster when this activity gets to be a nuisance or creates an unhealthy situation.

Clearing ghost energy is a different process. It involves both intuitive work as well as mediumship. There needs to be a psychic connection made to figure out what help this spirit needs to cross over. Many times this connection is made before I arrive at the appointment. When this is the case, that spirit is usually ready to move on. Other times, the process can take longer because the spirit isn’t as eager to go. After the ghost crosses over or leaves the space, I will have to go back and use many of the techniques (previously men-tioned) to clear away the negative energy left behind. Deborah Miller is a Certified Feng Shui Practitioner and interior designer and owner of Domicile Design, Inc. She combines the creativity and disciplines of her interior design (25+ years) & feng shui experience with her skills as a psychic, medium, and healer to help you achieve healthy, harmoni-ous inviting spaces that are an expression of your own unique style. Her goal is to help you create inviting and stylish home or work environments, that reflect your spirit and enhance your well being. HEN YOU visit the six or more Upper Midwest events sponsored each year by Edge Life Expos & Events, you’ll see

a light-haired, good-looking, charming 60-some-year-old guy either at the registra-tion table or walking the expo aisles. Every-one knows Gary Beckman, founder of these events, because he’s out there, work-ing the crowds, warmly greeting attendees and attending to vendor issues. He’s also the one you’ll see interviewed by TV and news reporters; he’s the “front” guy! Beckman and wife Insiah founded Edge Life Expos & Events in 2001 and celebrate its upcoming 10th anniversary serving the metaphysical and holistic health community. “I saw a great need for expos and events in the Upper Midwest that would fit with what this community was looking for and I wanted to make this available,” said Beckman. Insiah Beckman said, “Gary is a visionary and can look at things creatively and once he has the vision, he hands it over to someone who can run with this vision. This is how we support each other: He creates and I do the day-to-day opera-tion.” Paradoxically they agree that Gary keeps Insiah grounded and that he keeps her from floating. Insiah’s “other” work involves channeling a group called The Council and she is a master teacher, healer, and intuitive who is a voice for new con-sciousness. She is a frequent speaker at their events and expos.

Prior to establishing his expo and events business Beckman and wife Insiah published Edge Life newspaper, later to become a magazine; this publication, now called The Edge, was sold to Editor Tim Miejan and Sales Manager Cathy Jacobsen a few years ago. “The newspaper and events business had a specific focus [spirituality and holistic health],” said Beckman. He said moving from producing a successful publication to producing well-attended community events with the same focus was a natural evolution—evolution with a purpose: “…to lift the veil of our spiritual sight and awaken ourselves and those we serve,” said Beckman.

wHaT cOnTRIbuTES TO SuccESS “My greatest lesson learned in these past 20 years has been the lesson of humil-ity,” said Beckman. “I’ve gained this through the school of hard knocks but specifically by learning to really listen to people before I make a decision. No one is ever completely correct and it’s good to ask questions if there is a difference of opinion or a strong belief system that doesn’t match my own. I don’t have all the answers and you can avoid cut-throat dynamics when you seek for understanding—where every-thing is not all black or white. I believe in teamwork as part of managing a company well.” The Beckmans believe it’s all about being conscious.

“Consciousness is changing because we are all becoming more enlightened,” said Insiah Beckman. “In general, orga-nized religions are based on control and power and people are beginning to see behind the scenes about this truth. The old structures are falling apart. Look at the economy and the business corrup-tion that has come to the surface. This is because consciousness is changing and we are becoming more aware. Dark truths are surfacing. On the one hand we have chaos and the other—deep-seated spirituality and expanding consciousness.” Gary Beckman continued, “The four cornerstones of capitalism—religion, economics, family and relationships, and health—have taken a nasty hit in the past 10 years and the shift has begun. The investment community went bankrupt, a new bill of health was passed in our coun-try and relationships have changed. [Scan-dal hit many organized religions.] This change is occurring now and right through 2012, 2013, 2014.”

ScaRcITy cOnScIOuSnESS: a bIg cHallEngE “One of the biggest challenges in this new thought community is overcoming lack consciousness,” said Beckman. “Even though we operate in the spiritual arena, we still need to be grounded in running a solid business to show a profit and that requires financial support for a good prod-uct offered and delivered.” Insiah added, “Learning to trust and not get into the mass global mind is important. We need to learn to not become part of the chaos.”

“A key need at this time is that one does not have to be in complete despair. This is mind-created and can be changed with a change in consciousness. If one can shift and see the poten-tial that they have and that humanity possesses, this will help us recover from what people deem as the bleakest time in our history. It’s always darkest before the dawn; but we need to get out of our comfort zones,” said Beckman. THE FuTuRE “I strongly believe that we are now in an era of collaboration and this involves bringing the publishing industry together with expos and events and 21st century technology,” said Gary Beckman. “Maintaining a base on the internet, perhaps creating a virtual expo reality, will help interface with people who want to attend our expos but live on the other side of the country or the world. This is a face of our future—elec-tronic expos and events—but all the while keep-ing our local shows viable.” “I ask people to stay in the moment and not get caught up in fear and the chaos they see around them; I ask them to trust Spirit because things will get better as we enter a golden age of more balance and harmony as peoples’ con-sciousness evolves,” said Insiah. The Beckmans point out that Edge Life Expos & Events delivers a valuable product for a reasonable price: Two-day expos where folks can visit up to 150 vendor exhibit booths, enjoy well-known speakers for nominal costs, and get many dozens of free workshops all for an entrance fee of $5 or $7. Building community and network-ing is the intangible benefit that is priceless. For more information: www.edgelife.net or about Insiah Beckman: www.insiah.com; see ad on back cover. •

Dear Grace, after a lengthy family-of-origin saga, I have given myself a break from initiating contact with them. (They apparently are taking the same break from me.) My sense was that it is in my Highest Good to call my sanest brother tomorrow, and my anxiety has been esca-lating since I “got” that it was the right thing for me to do. It is hard to tease out MY motives in calling him. I would like to have a satisfying connection with at least one of my siblings. I am leery of opening the can of worms that has been my family-of-origin experience in the past. I know I have done remarkable work in terms of my relationships with them. I sense they have had the chance to shift their beliefs, also, although I don’t know how conscious that is for them. What should I do?—Becky

Dear Becky, When I look at your energy sys-tem, I note that it gets “scrambly” as you get closer to contacting your brother. You have a choice. Your hara line needs some work. I invite you to align with your Divine Self, and to rely on spiritual help to double your anchoring at the center of the Earth. Locate your divine center within (today

this appears deep in your abdomen), and invite its light to expand to fill your whole body, and now your energy field beyond your skin, at least five feet in all directions. There. Now notice your desire to call your brother. Do you still want to do it?—Grace

Dear Grace, I take on too much and end up feel-ing stressed and overwhelmed. can you provide me with a good self-care tip? —Laura

Dear Laura, From an energetic perspective, you have a heart chakra pattern of giving away your energy and not having a balance of receiving energy. In your case, this pattern is one that goes back many generations. If you would like to develop a more balanced pattern, here is your “homework”: Place one or both of your hands at the center of your chest. Say a prayer asking for the optimum giving/receiving balance for you. Close your eyes, and imagine yourself in the most relaxing place you know. This might be a place where you have been in the past, or a place you imagine. Notice the details of this place from all of your senses: sights, sounds, smells, textures, temperature, and taste. Do this for as long as you like each time, and

repeat it once a day for two weeks.—Grace

Dear Grace I sometimes struggle with the deci-sions my adult children make. What do you suggest that can help me be more accepting of their choices?—Jackie

Dear Jackie,When I look at the energy patterns of the relationships with your adult children, there are entangled connections between your solar plexus and theirs. The nature of these entanglements, from your end, is fear-based, what-will-people-think-of-my-parenting, the-world-will-fall-apart-if-I-am-not-ever-vigilant, which have their roots in your own childhood. I am inviting the soothing of your inner child, begin-ning in infancy, all the way into adulthood. —Grace

CAN feel the air and myself start to feel cold. It’s time to close my eyes and begin to breathe slowly. There, I can feel him now and a connection is being made. I hear him tell me his name is Andrew and he is 22 years old. I begin to feel pain in my left leg and

on the left side of my head. He tells me a truck side-swiped his car and he is looking for help. The light has been waiting for him and I gently ask him if he sees it and who is there for him. He states he sees his grandfather who he knew when he was four years old. It’s time for Andrew to go home and I release with a long slow breath. The room suddenly feels light and warm again. A woman sitting across from me stated she felt something around her and had a problem with a slight headache and recent depression. It was not physical, but due to a ghost. There were other occurrences in her home. She had several “guests” staying with her and needed to be assisted. Not all of our issues are caused by ghostly encounters, but some are. If you are in a vulnerable state, you can attract them. I haven’t met anyone who hasn’t gone to a bar and didn’t bring a friend home with them, even if it is temporary.

SHOw nO FEaR Ghosts communicate through electricity, water, telepathy, and physical and spiritual energy. Children are especially suscep-tible to them and their tales in the night should not be dismissed lightly. They don’t always have a connection to a house, but to the people in it. And don’t make the mistake that if you have a new house, you can’t have ghosts! Ghosts can move things and

influence your thinking, but they mean no harm. It should also be noted that showing any type of fear just encourages, so either help them out by listening or send them on their way .If you worry about evil, not to worry; it’s real people you should be afraid of.

gHOSTS aRE EvERywHERE For me, it’s just another day in the life of a medium. It doesn’t matter where I go, they are everywhere. I must have been uncon-scious when I agreed to be happy assisting ghosts. It has become a daily necessity if I want to sleep at night. We tap into their energy wherever they are. No space or time limitations. My husband and I have moved ghosts world-wide. No need to be present. But I have to admit, it is quite entertaining at times. Once a ghost came “through me” and I felt like I was a very strong-minded actress who demanded attention. I became quite vocal. At other times, it is also emotional, especially ghost children. Very seldom do I get away with not feeling the tears. Well, it looks like duty calls as the light is flickering and it’s time to meditate.
