Congrats to Eta, Logue, Lassiter

Congratulations to the following TLH students who have been recognized by the

College Board and by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Ayi B. Eta is a

semifinalist in the 2014 National Achievement Scholarship Program and Lora K.

Lassiter and Jordan J. Logue are semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship

Program. These programs recognize the top academic students in the United States

who earned high scores on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. These

three students will be recognized at the monthly Anderson School District Five Board

meeting tomorrow night, October 14, at 6:30 pm at the Anderson 5 District Office.

Agriculture and FFA Travel to State

Fair

Agriculture students and FFA members will travel to the South Carolina State Fair.

Students will participate in the FFA Day at The State Fair and the State Tractor

Driving Career Development Event. All students attending this trip are responsible

for any and all work missed while we are gone. For questions email

[email protected].

College Fair Tomorrow

The guidance department is sponsoring a College Fair for juniors and seniors on

Tuesday, October 15, 2013, from 10:10-10:55 am in the mall area. College

representatives will be speaking with juniors and seniors to provide information

regarding admissions/academics/athletics/extracurricular opportunities available at

their respective post-secondary institutions. Students who have class at the Anderson

V Career Campus or Southwood Academy of the Arts are expected to attend their

respective class at those locations during this time. All juniors and seniors on the TL

Hanna campus may visit with college representatives in the mall area from 10:10 –

10:55 am.

PSAT and ASVAB Wednesday

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (which is also the National Merit Scholarship

Qualifying Test) and the ASVAB will be given this Wednesday in the morning. The

afternoon is an early release day for students and a Professional Development Half

Day for Teachers.

School Dance Friday After

Greenwood Game – New Ground

Rules About Dancing…

I have consented to allow Student Government to sponsor a dance after the

Greenwood football game Friday night, October 18. Along with the privilege will

come student responsibility to dance appropriately. As you may be aware, we have

had issues with “dirty dancing,” and I don’t mean the Patrick Swayze kind. That is

clean compared to what some students want to do. This dancing has a girl backing

up to a boy, where her backside comes in contact with his front side and then they

Page 4: Oct 14, 2013 Parent Newsletter #21...doors for a huge homecoming. They are inviting former students, parents, PTA officers, teachers, and administrators to commemorate this special

proceed to gyrate vigorously to the music. I think you get the picture. You might

think that the students participating in this are the real trouble-makers, right? No so.

Even those thought of as upstanding citizens are taking part.

Schools all over the country are ceasing to have dances because of this new

phenomenon. All I can say is that we will not have it here. There is a new rule that

is really not new at all -- we just have never applied it to dancing. As you may

know, all school rules apply to school-sponsored events as well. Since a dance is a

school sponsored event, I am going to apply an existing rule to dancing. This rule

(in the Anderson V District Code of Conduct) is found under “Sexual Offenses:” The

rule states, “A student shall not engage in consensual sexual activity.” If one made

the motion I described above in the school building during the school day, it would

be considered a sexual offense. It only makes sense that the same motion on a dance

floor would be no different. The consequence for such an offense is three days of

out-of-school suspension. As students buy tickets for this dance, they will be given

the rule as it applies to inappropriate dancing. If they have issues with following the

rule, then I would suggest they find another locale in which to dance.

Breast Cancer Awareness Night at

Hanna

The T.L. Hanna Football family will honor and remember those who have fought

the battle with breast cancer (or any other type of cancer) this Friday night, October

18th by wearing our “A Crucial Catch” shirts and participating in a one-lap relay

around the track. The shirts are on sale now for $5.00 each (2X and 3X are $10.00

each). There is a limited number of each size and the shirts will be sold on a first

come, first serve basis. Order yours today! The relay will take place on the track at

7:15 pm before the varsity football game vs Greenwood. Walk for yourself or walk

for someone else! You don’t have to buy a shirt to participate in the relay. If you

have any questions, please contact Coach Fouch at [email protected] or

(864) 260-5151.

Calhoun’s 40 Year Roundup

On Friday, October 25, 2013, Calhoun Academy of the Arts will be celebrating 40

years of service to children in the Anderson community. They are opening their

doors for a huge homecoming. They are inviting former students, parents, PTA

officers, teachers, and administrators to commemorate this special occasion in the life

of the school. They seek to reflect on the past and remember a rich tradition of

excellence exemplified by all those involved in Calhoun Street Elementary School

since 1973 and the contributions of all who came from North Fant Elementary

School in January 1973.

For those who would like to purchase a ticket for the barbeque dinner and are

unable to come to the school prior to the event, please call to have your ticket

reserved (864-260-5090). They need to have an estimate of the amount of food

needed for the event. Mark your calendars and attend if you have a past connection

to this wonderful school!

Grease

Grease is a high energy musical set in the rocking 50s. This classic coming of age

story features Danny, Sandy, and the whole Rydell High gang as they steer through

the typical high school “drama” singing familiar songs as “Greased Lighting, “Summer

Nights”, “Born to Hand Jive” and many more of your favorites from this Tony

nominated show! So grab your poodle skirts and leather jackets and hand jive your

way to Project Challenge Playhouse for your chance to enroll in Rydell High School

and become a Pink Lady or Burger Palace Boy!

What’s wrong with this picture? Radio relaxes in the gym with three

properly attired PE teachers and one who is in violation of dress code.

From this Clemson grad, I feel a letter of reprimand may be in order.

Even Radio is properly attired .
