5 Myths that limit BI application portfolios “BI in the Cloud” - Oco SaaS BI Technical Overview
• How it works• BI team roles with traditional versus SaaS BI applications• Traditional ETL vs. Oco SaaS BI data mapping and integration• Data quality

5 Myths
Popular BI assumptions…1. “Our requirements are too unique to be met by a commercial BI application”
2. “Using a commercial BI application will reduce our competitive advantage”
3. “Our data is too sensitive to let off-site”
4. “We can’t evaluate commercial BI apps until we have fully analyzed user requirements”
5. “Commercial BI applications aren’t ready for ‘prime time'“
These pre-dispose BI teams to build versus “buy” BI application decisions…

Reality
Myth Reality
Our requirements are too unique
Some of your requirements are too unique. Meet those with custom-built BI, meet others with commercial
Custom-built gives us a competitive advantage
Not if competitors implement commercial solutions—their users will have more insight before yours
Our data is too sensitive Not all of it. Categorize data as “Never OK to let off site,” “Eventually OK,” “OK today,” so you’re not precluded from SaaS BI
Need to analyze requirements before we look at commercial BI apps
Look at them right away. Even if you go with custom built, there’s lots to learn from them. Can save you lots of analysis and design work.
Commercial BI apps aren’t viable yet
Hundreds of companies have implemented commercial BI applications.

Recommendation
Challenge these assumptions at the beginning of every project Your BI application is probably commoditized if:
• You’re in an established industry like manufacturing• The project supports an undifferentiated part of the business
e.g., HR, F&A, Supply Chain, etc.
• Commercial BI applications are on the market
BI application portfolio should include a mix of:• Custom-built BI apps to meet strategic BI needs• Commercial SaaS BI apps to meet commoditized BI needs
Hybrid approach gives you ability to:• Meet commoditized needs faster, more fully• Free up development resources to work on strategic BI projects

History Repeating…
20 years ago… Similar assumptions applied to commercial enterprise apps Adoption of COTS from then-young vendors like SAP,
Peoplesoft, revolutionized enterprise software Custom-built quickly became competitively disadvantageous Same transition is at hand for BI…

Rapid Deployment SaaS BI Solutions
Rapid Deployment• Typically 6 to 10 weeks from data to business users really using the solution
SaaS/OnDemand• Software as a Service - fully & securely hosted, use via Web Browser• Subscription pricing model + fixed price, fixed time initial implementation
Solutions - BI as a Product• Detailed business expertise included and built in• Not cookie-cutter - tailored to your specific needs during deployment
Complement your BI Strategy• Use tactically along side your EDW & other BI apparatus• Minimum impact on your IT staff
... Next: a few more details on each starting from the bottom... Next: a few more details on each starting from the bottom

Most BI/DW systems have some underserved communities Examples:
• Recent acquisition/merger• Rollout timeline for Enterprise DW/BI solution• Particularly troublesome source data systems• Complex reporting needs – business knowledge gaps

Example of “Get Strategic”
Oco Customer• Provider of specialized services to small businesses in a particular industry• Competes with large businesses in that industry
Before Oco deployment – All Tactical• Corporate BI team spending all time on sales and customer 360 roll-up reporting to
understand sales and customer relationship management effectiveness.• Not industry specific use of BI.
After Oco deployment – Fully Strategic• Corporate BI team now data mining prospect data
Enhancing data with industry-specific 3rd party data Using predictive modeling/estimation technology

Productizing Business Intelligence
How do you Make BI into a Product Offering?• Offer Business Solutions
Tools alone never directly deliver value (A hammer is not a roof!) Oco takes on the risk
• Collapse the Data-Integration Problem Oco's SaaS BI approach allows highest-possible leverage here
The above imply:• Predefined Libraries for Business Focus Areas
Business Expertise Built Into the Product
• New and Very Different Approach to Data Integration Technology - Rich Reusable Models, Automated Data Integration Methodology - Agile Rapid-Cycle, QA oriented

Data Principles - Data is the Fuel for Oco Initial Data Export - Broad Swathes of Data
• Oco's technology rediscovers metadata, rediscovers relationships, and maps data to the Oco Analytical Data Store Schema
• To do this it must have all the data • No selective extraction - we need all columns, from many tables
Example: From SAP ERP, we must extract over 100 tables. We provide an SAP exporter to simplify this effort.
• No pre-processing - We need the data "raw" from the source systems Pre-processing makes it harder for our analyzers & pattern matching Security/Privacy masking is ok
• If big enough, encrypted portable disk is transfer medium
Periodic Data Updates• More selective - still all columns, but only from tables needed in the solution• Changed-Data Capture (CDC) - only when needed to reduce data volumes for largest
transaction sets• Transfer mechanism: Pushed to Oco over Secure FTP

Contrast Oco Discovery and Mapping With Traditional ETL (Extract Transform and Load)
ETL tools: Move and Transform1. Maps any source system data to any database design
2. Doesn’t know what the database design is – no design-specific abilities
3. Data cleansing add-ons
4. Pre-defined ETL templates
5. Rich connectivity & Changed-Data Capture capabilities
6. No assistance discovering relationships and mappings
7. ETL jobs crafted by people
Oco Discovery and Mapping: 1. Maps source system data to the Oco IDS design only2. Knows details of the Oco IDS database schema3. Helps identify data cleansing issues4. Reuse mappings for recurring source system 5. No connectivity – customer pushes data
(Can use ETL tools for extract.)
6. Automated assistance for discovering metadata & relationships
Focus on the meaning of the data. • Automates decisions that ETL tools leave up to the tool user• More specialized• Understands Business vocabulary
