ing in the 2017-18 program year,
as well as monthly all-staff meet-
ings, and weekly team meetings.
Our Service Mem-
bers are using these
tools to assist in
planning and prepar-
ing for their lives
after AmeriCorps.
There are many advantages to
joining the PASS AmeriCorps
Program: the experience in a
school site, the professional de-
velopment, the resume building,
the networking with other pro-
fessionals, and the opportunity to
make a difference in the life of a
child, and more.
One of the new benefits that
PASS AmeriCorps is able to offer
this year is the skills building and
career counseling resource guide
called the “AmeriCorps Ad-
vantage.”
This guide provides activities,
tips, strategies, resources, web-
sites, advice, and more to Ameri-
Corps Service
Members in
AmeriCorps pro-
grams throughout
the nation.
The PASS Ameri-
Corps Program
has incorporated
portions of the
guide into our

Resource Guide
The PASS “AmeriCorps Advantage”
In December, the PASS Ameri-
Corps Program incorporated a
holiday event into its monthly
meeting and mini-training.
Along with our regular agenda
items of program news, tips, and
upcoming events, we had a fellow
AmeriCorps Member, Virginia
Davis, from the American Red
Cross come and provide a mini-
training on hands-only CPR. We
also heard about the Pillowcase
Project that the Red
Cross may be able to
bring in to interested
elementary schools
to help teach chil-
dren about disaster
preparedness.
During the day,
Members also partic-
ipated in team building
activities, such as an
Ugly Holiday Sweater
competition and a
White Elephant Gift
Exchange.
Happy Holidays with PASS!
It was a great way to learn a
little, share a little, and have a
little fun as we close out the first
semester of the school year.
Happy Holidays to everyone and
we will see you in the new year!

The month of
November is
about showing
appreciation for
all that we have,
instead of dwell-
ing on what we
don’t. It is a time
to surround
ourselves with loved ones
amidst the positive energy that
November brings. I am feeling
especially grateful to be a
member of the Laurel commu-
nity as I spend my days along-
side bright young students’
eager to learn and love. On
November 17, I attended my
first field trip with the third-
grade class, including four of
my PASS students. We spent
the day at the Agua Hedionda
Lagoon, where students were
met with 400 acres of gardens,
aquatic and land-based wildlife,
and Native American culture.
Students participated in many
hands-on educational activities
like basket weaving, rock paint-
ing and plant life examination.
The day was concluded with a
performance by a Native
American tribesman who
shared his ancient traditions
with our third graders - a per-
fect way to kickoff Thanksgiv-
ing break!

trimester, which will hopefully
help them have more success
in school. This month was for
appreciating our veterans with
all the hard work and sacrifices
they have made for our coun-
try. Students have already
made thank you cards that will
be sent to our Veterans. I was
honored to be able to accom-
pany the 4th grade class to the
November has flown by! The
PASS AmeriCorps program is
gaining popularity with the
multiple slime activities held on
campus for each grade level.
Students have enjoyed getting
sticky and slimy with glue,
glitter and other slime ingredi-
ents. Students have also set up
goals that they would like to
accomplish for the following
Living Coast Discovery Cen-
ter, where students enjoyed
interacting with wildlife and
learning about geology. In De-
cember, PASS students will
continue to work on respect,
leadership, and service. I'll be
working with students for the
key of the month and provid-
ing researched based lessons.

cookies given to the veterans
attending their annual lunch-
eon at UCSD on November
8th. Many of the students will-
ingly gave up their lunch recess
and/or afternoon recess to
write their cards and almost
half of them wrote more than
the 5 requested. One 4th
grader, Suleika, really went
above and beyond by becom-
ing a ‘Thank you’ card-writing
machine who completed 14
cards in total. An honorable
mention also goes to Nathan
in 5th grade for writing 9. If
time permitted, many of the
students would’ve loved to
have written more. I can’t wait
to see the creativity they bring
to the other ‘Thank you’ cards
PASS will be writing soon.
Happy Holidays!
In a month that is all about
gratitude, Veterans Day pro-
vided the perfect National Day
of Service for November’s
project. For the second year in
a row, we collaborated with
the UCSD Veterans Associa-
tion to write ‘Thank You’
cards for veterans. The initial
goal was to have each PASS
student write and decorate 5
cards to be attached to bags of

Happy Holidays from Cesar Chavez
Middle School! For this month,
students have been helping me on
our Veterans' Day project. PASS
will be honoring our school Veter-
ans by giving them appreciation
books and give out poppy flowers
to students and staff. Some PASS
pupils have thrown out ideas and made the project their
own, such as Armando R. who came up with the idea to
color the poppy flowers with the colors of the American
flag. Another student named William D. came up with
the idea to draw the American flag on the poppy flowers
and was the first one to volunteer to pass them and the
appreciation books out. We are excited to come back
from Thanksgiving break because our goal is to give them
out by the end of the month. Also, going into December,
we will focus on finishing the year strong and raising our
GPAs. Our goal is to have C's and above, and to continue
that momentum next semester.
Let’s work hard and keep the momentum going!
Happy Holidays!
late to the song. These pieces of art
are then displayed on our "music
wall" in the PASS classroom. Mr.
Steven has noticed a growing need
for additional math resources and
has implemented after-school math
tutoring multiple times a week to
help fill this gap. There has been a
great turnout so far and we look
forward to these numbers growing.

Season's greetings from the PASS
AmeriCorps Program at Lincoln
Middle School! This November has
been filled with music, art, and
tutoring! Miss Leah has started a
creative music project working with
students' favorite songs. The stu-
dents examine the lyrics, uncover-
ing themes and then create a piece
of art representing these messages,
as well as how they personally re-

classes. Students are starting to see
their hard work pay off when their
grades are improving! In the month
of December, we have decided to
have a big Christmas party to cele-
brate all the students’ birthdays
from first semester and also a great
reward for all their hard work.
Go Falcons!
This month, PASS AmeriCorps has
decided to honor our Veterans.
Students made cards for Veterans,
thanking them for their service and
bravery. We decided we will be
delivering these to Veteran home-
less centers. It was great to see
how many nice things students had
to say to those who have fought for
our freedom. We have been work-
ing really hard on getting our
grades up and showing teachers a
great effort to get caught up in

semester.
The time
has flown by
as we come
to the end
of building
our caseloads. Throughout
November and December,
PASS has been able to accumu-
late almost 50 amazing stu-
dents, thank and appreciate the
Veteran's we have on campus,
and tackle all the loose ends of
first semester. PASS was able
to accompany our 8th grade
AVID class of 60 students to
the Holocaust Memorial in L.A.
After our tour of the museum,
students were able to hear
from a Holocaust survivor.
Our students led a debrief the
day after where they discussed
the facts, the aftermath and
reactions to this experience. In
December, our students creat-
ed "The Giving Tree", in which
they displayed what they were
going to give over the holidays
instead of asking what they
wanted. We are looking for-
ward to continue to grow our
caseloads and provide more in-
depth services to the students
on our caseloads for second
semester.
Have a fantastic holiday!
OHS! For this month's
National Day of Service, stu-
dents will be writing thank you
letters to veterans and we will
have them mailed to the Vet-
erans' Association of North
County. We also had the privi-
lege to accompany Gear Up
staff and students to the Barrio
Empowerment field trip to

students were able to attend
Greetings from

School! Things have
been rolling along
smoothly this
month as we pre-
pare to head into
our Thanksgiving
week break on Nov.
20th - Nov. 24th.
There is never a dull
moment here at
breakout sessions, hear a pow-
erful keynote speaker, eat a
delicious lunch, and even had
some time to dance and have
fun! It continues to be a joy
working with, supporting and
learning from our students and
all of the wonderful staff here
at OHS. We are eagerly look-
ing forward to what the rest
of the year will have in store
for us!
members were honored.
PASS will continue to cele-
brate the holiday throughout
the month by creating a "Wall
of Honor" which will display
pictures of El Camino High
School students' parents and
loved ones who have either
served previously or are active
duty in the U.S. military. Mov-
ing quickly along in the month,
Bryan and Amanda attended
the "What If Week" meeting
wherein students suggested
additional ideas of fun events to
take place during February 5-9th.
As December approaches, PASS
students will be working hard to
study for their finals before win-
ter break. The PASS office contin-
ues to be a space where students
pop in during passing period,
study for upcoming tests and de-
stress with competitive games of
Uno. Happy Holidays!

Here at Ocean Shores we kicked
off November with a traditional
celebration of Dia De Los Muertos.
On Nov 1st and 2nd, we trans-
formed our humble auditorium in a
traditional oferen-
da incorporating
symbols of the
Holiday, like mari-
golds, candles,
food and skulls to
honor the loved
ones we have
lost. Earlier in the
week, I enlisted the help of Mrs.
Van Hoosear’s advanced art class
to help me form and create dozens
of traditional sugar skulls. The
event was very meaningful and I am
so glad our students felt comforta-
ble to share their experiences with
others.
On November 17th, Shores was
filled with the festive spirit as
the staff lead by Mrs. Harris and
Mrs. Carterette cooked a special
Thanksgiving meal for all the
students at Shores to enjoy.
Thankfulness was in the air as
over 100 students enjoyed this
special day. The tradition has
been happening at Shores for
over 20 years and I am always
happy to be a part of it!

The PASS AmeriCorps Program serves stu-
dents in grades 3 through 12 at 30 school sites
across San Diego County, including campuses
in San Diego, Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos,
and Valley Center. Each PASS AmeriCorps
member provides support for 30 students
through individual and group mentoring, aca-
demic support, grades and attendance reviews,
leadership development, guest speakers, ser-
vice learning projects, and parent outreach.
Through their service with PASS, our Ameri-
Corps members are able to create positive
change in our schools and communities.
