THE Rotary Club of Ocean Grove officially finished its development of the Lookout Reserve at the weekend.

A good crowd was at the reserve for the opening.

said it was the culmination of two years work for the club. The project started under the tenure of former president Rod Greer.

“The main thing over the weekend was to launch the history panels which were inspired by

Celebrate 58, the year Ocean Grove officially became a township and started appearing on maps,” Noel said. The project also included the replanting of native grasses, the reinstating of a directional rock cairn

and the installation of a drinking fountain.

“We wanted to acknowledge the history of the area from the original Aboriginal inhabitants to the time Ocean Grove was declared a town,” said Noel.

Councillor Jan Farrell, who directed some money from her discretionary fund in 2009-10 for the panels and grasses, attended the opening.

Noel thanked the surf club for hosting a morning tea for the visitors.

Lookout, a new era for reserve

THE Ocean Grove property market is remaining stable, according to local real estate agents, despite recent Land Victoria reports.

According to the latest Victorian Property Sales reports, Ocean Grove’s median house, land and apartment prices have all increased during 2010.

The highest jump was in median housing prices which increased from $395,000 to $461,000 over a 12-month period, with 251 properties sold.

The figures indicate a rise in property prices however local estate agents maintain that prices have remained steady during the past year.

Hayden’s director and real estate agent Hugh McEwan said they had found property prices around Ocean Grove were staying strong but there were currently more buyers than sellers in the market.

“Given the time of the year, there’s confidence in the market but in general there are less properties available,” he said.

“Especially in the sub $450,000 market there are plenty of potential buyers.”

RT Edgar Bellarine director Peter Amezdroz said Ocean Grove’s market had picked up, especially during the past couple of weeks but prices had stayed consistent.

“Ocean Grove is a buoyant market with not a lot of highs and lows thanks to our close proximity to Geelong and the beach,” he said.

Peter said the median price had probably increased due to a few higher priced property sales however pricing has remained consistent over the last year.

“I believe in the foreseeable future Ocean Grove pricing will remain stable,” he said.

THE CFA has had a quiet start to winter with only one call out during the second and third weeks of June.The authority was called to a house where an old electric heater fan blew out causing a flash and some small flames that were out by the time fire fighters were on the scene.Fire fighters took the cover off the heater and found the inside covered in dust and cobwebs which had caused the heater to blow.It is a timely reminder, as the heart of winter approaches, for Ocean Grove residents to ensure heaters are cleaned.

A LOCAL champion of Neighbourhood Watch doesn’t think a change at the top of Victoria Police will alter police command’s attitude to the community organisation.

Ocean Grove’s last Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Bill Sommers said that the recent resignation of Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland wouldn’t necessarily bring a change of attitude toward encouraging officers to attend Neighbourhood Watch meetings.

“I haven’t really seen anything to say that whoever takes over will

bring a renewed interest to Neighbourhood Watch,” said Bill, who believes the absence of police curtailed the Ocean Grove group’s ability to attract volunteers and function effectively.

“The Baillieu government promised $500,000 for Neighbourhood Watch in the budget but we won’t see any of that money here,” he said.

“Maybe in the City of Greater Geelong but if you look at the map of Victoria you see that the money won’t go very far.

“We also lost sponsorship from organisations like Ford and the Good Guys,

but the real problem is not having a uniformed officer at the meetings anymore.

“I’ve been involved for years and it’s disheartening when you bust a gut and

people volunteer their time to help the police out but then no uniformed person attends the meeting.

“People have lost interest now.”

Grovers are living healthier lives after participating in the 84-Day Body Challenge.

Jodi Dunell from Jumpt Personal Training has helped give locals the motivation to change their eating and exercise habits during the 12-week program.

The Body Challenge involves eating alkaline foods which mainly comprises fresh, unprocessed foods, and maintaining a healthy exercise regime with personal trainer, Jodi.

“The idea is to get people to learn to make the correct decision regarding health and

fitness that best suits their lifestyle; ultimately they are responsible,” said Jodi.

Alison Bardsley has taken part in two challenges since September 2010 and said she lost 12kg.

“It was good, as far as food goes. It’s not one of those diets where you have to count calories and measure out food,” she said.

“It makes you think about what you’re putting in your mouth,

you become used to eating a more healthy diet.”

Man jailedover glassingAN OCEAN Grove man has been jailed for glassing another man at the town centre pub.On Tuesday Tobias Sheehan, 25, was sentenced to 30 months in prison and ordered to serve at least one year before being considered for parole after being found guilty of the attack at the Zebra Crossing Bar in October 2009. He was also fined $584.10 for resisting police. Geelong County Court was told Sheehan’s 36-year-old victim Bob Duggan suffered an 8cm gash to his head and underwent surgery following the incident. In the lead up to sentencing it was reported that Councillor Jan Farrell submitted character evidence for Sheehan.Her decision has since been condemned by the owner of the bar (see Letters page 6) as well as victims of crime groups.However, Judge Michael McInerney defended Cr Farrell’s right to give evidence.

A LOCAL bookshop owner has taken issue with recent comments by the federal small business minister.

The owner of bookgrove, Stacey Moore, was unimpressed, like many independent booksellers around the country, when Minister Nick Sherry predicted that online shopping would wipe out general bookstores within five years. Only specialist sellers in capital cities would survive, he said.

“I just wonder why he

attacked an industry when so many other industries have been struggling over the past 18 months,” Stacey said.

“Bookshops aren’t retail centres. They’re cultural hubs that host community events, like author appearances, and also help with education,” said Stacey.

“His comments were pretty lame. The fallout is I have people coming in and asking me if and when I’m going to close and wondering whether

they should buy vouchers because they worry I won’t honour them,” she said.

“His comments are hurtful to the industry and reinforce the impression that bookshops are gone.”

Many prominent people in the industry strongly opposed the claims.

Simon Milne, the manager of Leading Edge Books, a buying group for more than 180 independent bookshops, said that his bookshops were ordering more stock from publishers than last year and are

hosting more book clubs and book launches than ever before.

Australian Booksellers Association chief executive Joel Becker said: “In spite of the disruptions of the last few months, bookshops are innovating and building on their existing customer bases.

“Before the end of the year, we expect most bookshops – independent as well as franchise and group shops – will have the capacity to sell online and to sell e-books.”

Outrage overbook comment

A SUCCESSFUL Ocean Grove Live Music Festival finished on a series of high notes (and a cavalcade of lower notes) on the Queen’s Birthday Monday.

Guitarist Phil Manning, of Chain fame, and local guitarist and singer John Willard closed out the festival with a workshop at the Ocean Grove Hotel, followed by a two-hour performance.

“It was a terrific way to end the festival. It was really well attended on what was a tough night to get people out of the house,” said one of the organisers Dave Dorman. “No one really wants to go out on the Monday night of a long weekend.

“They did about an hour on different guitar playing techniques. Then they did a lot of playing. They went nearly two hours instead of the scheduled one hour.”

Dave said the two

musicians, who had never met before, were like two peas in a pod, such was their chemistry on stage.

The weekend featured 130 acts and about 300 musicians performed.

“All the venues were fairly busy and the feedback from the musos was really positive,” said Dave who likes keeping things simple. “All performances

and workshops are free and that’s a real focus to make it a free music festival.”

Next year, Dave envisages the festival having a more tangible presence on the main street.

“We’d like to create more intensity in the town so it has a real carnival atmosphere. We also feel a need to try and have a major performer in every

venue,” he said. Dave was also pleased

that the four venues – the Piping Hot Chicken Shop, Bardeli, the Ocean Grove Hotel and the Zebra Bar – invested money in sound engineers. The festival began as the open mic night every Saturday from 7pm at the Ocean Grove Hotel. Text 0408 575 799 to book a spot.

Pedestriandies at AlfredAN 86-year-old man who was in collision with a van outside the Ocean Grove Post Office earlier this month has since died.The collision took place on the corner of Hodgson Street and the Terrace at about 1pm on Thursday June 9.Paramedics and MICA ambulance crews treated the man at the scene before he was transferred to Geelong hospital before later being admitted to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne. He passed away on Monday 13.Police are asking for assistance from any witnesses to the accident to contact the investigating officer Senior Constable Kelly Wray on 5256 2698.The man’s name has not yet been released by police.

A VCAT hearing scheduled for July 4 will determine whether developers can build on land previously earmarked as a public reserve.

Originally, 32 objections were raised by Ocean Grove residents who had bought blocks of land adjacent to the reserve in Kingston Estate under the impression it would not be built upon.

“The only reason we bought there was because of the size of the vacant land over the road from our block and the fact it would remain free of development,” said Grant Burgoyne, who is one of seven residents taking their objections to the final VCAT hearing.

“We wanted a bigger block but they’re hard to come by so we bought this block off Shell Road Developments through Wallington Realty because of the size of the reserve,” said Grant. “We bought off the plan, which showed two vacant blocks backing on to an area we were told was going to be set aside as the reserve.

“Shell Road Developments varied the planning permit on those blocks after we bought our

block to take up most of the free land. Now there’s going to be about 30 more houses and another road put in to service them.”

The two blocks were across the other side of the 7.6 hectare area initially earmarked to remain parkland. If the new planning permit is approved it will be reduced to 1.5 hectares.

The land is a triangular wedge in the Kingston Estate, bordered by Milborne Drive, Inglewood Lane and Oakdean Boulevard.

Wallington Realty is a subsidiary company of Shell Road Developments.

Grant said the change to the land would have a negative effect on property’s value.

Shell Road Development spokesman Jason Corless said the land in question was originally intended to perform a dual function as public open space and drainage area.

“As a result of detailed planning for the growth area to the west and the north of Kingston drainage

solutions have been arrived at which reduce the need for the land to provide large areas of drainage retention,” he said.

“We have always strived to provide public space which meets both statutory requirements and the needs of residents and will continue to provide 10 per cent public open space in the estate.

“We strongly deny any claims of misrepresentation and believe the facts will clearly speak for themselves.”

OCEAN Grovers with Type 2 diabetes have a new opportunity to increase their quality of life.

Bellarine Exercise and Rehabilitation’s Lisa Broman is helping to give people with Type 2 diabetes the chance to participate in an exercise and health program at Ocean View Health Club.

Lisa said the program was the second of its kind in the entire Geelong region. “It’s imperative that people do adequate exercise and we give them a social side as well, they can interact with people just like themselves.”

For the past four years, Allan Thomas (pictured) has regularly taken part in cusomised exercise

sessions and loves them. Allan said the program

was often changed to keep it interesting and he said had felt a difference in his health.

“If someone just gave me the exercises and told me to go exercise, I would never do it but with the sessions, there’s a social element and its great,” he said.

Farrell actionsalarmingAS OWNER of Zebra Lounge Bar Ocean Grove, I am alarmed that Councillor Jan Farrell, with the portfolio for community safety, is seeking a non-custodial sentence for a vicious unprovoked offence at a time when the community is calling for harsher penalties for violent acts.

As a bar owner I am committed to providing a safe venue where we have zero tolerance for anti-social behaviour. As a member of the Bellarine Liquor Accord, I have the upmost confidence and respect for the members of the Bellarine Police who work tirelessly to support our community.

Has Cr Farrell consulted with police involved in this case? I was working the night of the glassing. At no time prior to or following the glassing did the offender demonstrate signs of heavy intoxication, as evidenced by security surveillance. Is it Cr Farrell’s view that glassings should not carry a custodial sentence?

Is she suggesting if a person demonstrates remorse the judicial system should not apply a custodial sentence? What qualifications does Cr Farrell have to support her judgement the offender is remorseful and will not reoffend?

Cr Farrell’s statements, in her capacity as a council member, are an affront to those men and women who put their bodies on the line every time they are called out. The Bellarine police are entitled to the full support of council members representing community safety.

arrangements. Refugee Week is a time to recognise the courage and strength of refugees and to celebrate the rich contribution they make to our society.

C o m m u n i t y - b a s e d arrangements for asylum seekers are far more appropriate, humane, sustainable and in line with the values of our society. The success of these new community-based arrangements supports the findings of an Australian Red Cross survey last year, which found most Australians were sympathetic to the plight of refugees.

It is important to keep debate on these issues in perspective and remember that compared with other refugee-hosting countries Australia receives a very small number of asylum applications. Last year Australia received 8250 applications for asylum, just two per cent of the 358,840 applications received across 44 nations.

Red Cross tries to give care when it is needed most and there is little doubt refugees and asylum seekers are among the most vulnerable in our society.

THE Barwon Heads road bridge is finally finished, but works will continue on the footbridge for another month.

McConnell Dowell project manager Don Webster said workers were still waiting on timber from northern New South Wales to arrive so they could complete the fishing platform at the Ocean Grove end of the pedestrian bridge.

“The whole thing, weather permitting, should be finished in four weeks,” he said. “We’ve had trouble sourcing timber since the first Queensland floods in November last year, but the last shipment should arrive soon.”

Work at the western end of the bridge is all but finished.

After the project is finished mid-July, McConnell Dowell will turn its attention to the construction of a boardwalk to the car park on the Ocean Grove spit, where their site offices are located.

“The boardwalk will be about three month’s work. It’s my understanding that VicRoads have got another contractor that will be doing landscaping in the same timeframe and getting plants in so they have a chance to establish themselves in spring,” Don said.

director Sebastian Motta said works on the bridge were going well.

“The landscaping [of the car park] is currently being developed by VicRoads designers in consultation with Barwon Coast Committee of Management and will

determine the species and providers for the project,” he said. “The planting will not commence until spring.”

The project should be finished in September. The asphalt on the road bridge was finished mid-June.

THE bright lighting on the Barwon Heads pedestrian bridge is proving a navigational problem for fishermen at night.

VicRoads has received complaints the reflection of the lights on the water is making it dangerous for people in boats to pass underneath as they have no idea if another boat is coming the other way.

It is also difficult to identify the navigational buoys to chart a safe passage through the pylons.

“VicRoads is working with port managers Barwon Coast to address the navigational issue involved with the Barwon Heads Bridge lighting,” said Sebastian Motta, VicRoads’ acting regional director.

“The pedestrian lighting has been installed to provide a lit path for pedestrians and as a security measure.”

He said that VicRoads had temporarily switched off about 40 metres of deck lighting on the bridge until an alternative solution is found for fishermen using boats at night.

I MOVED to Ocean Grove from Kew almost exactly three years ago. My sister and her partner were also moving, loved the Bellarine area and thought that Ocean Grove would be suitable. I was also looking for a different challenge in my life having retired from the classical music world of the ABC just eighteen months before. The idea of the sea air was most tantalizing.

I grew up in inner Melbourne, but the greater part of my school life was spent at MLC in Hawthorn and that was where my musical training began, I suppose, with the cello and lots and lots of singing. I also learned the piano privately with a wonderful teacher.

I attended the Conservatorium at Melbourne University so that I could produce classical music in the ABC.

I ended up working

there over a span of 40 years, including a period living in Italy to study the culture and language in Perugia. Some of the ABC employment was only during university holidays in the very early days. I found the work immensely stimulating which involved anything to do with music itself and musicians. Recording a concert, the sound engineers and I would attend a three-hour morning rehearsal to create a beautiful sound. We would work in combination with the orchestral management, conductor and soloist, mostly visiting from overseas.

My passion for music formed my work as I found it very difficult to do something that was not my passion. However after working for the ABC for 10 years I went to London for nearly a year as I was in need of a rest due to poor health, for which the

doctors could not find a problem. It took many years of gradually looking at a purer way of eating and this and that outside allopathic medicine to find ways of restoring myself to pretty good health, not only physically, but also emotionally and spiritually.

This journey of discovery of different ways of looking at things has absorbed me ever since, so it became a passion. I always felt that when I retired from the ABC it would be time to devote more attention to these ways which now include among others Indian head massage, sound for transformation and eating more uncooked fruit and vegetables.

I am involved with the Neighbourhood Centre, who have welcomed me most warmly and I have been doing the Indian head massage as a hobby. I have also worked on a few occasions with Judy

Stickland with Sounding for inner peace for the Mood Support Group, as well some fundraisers for Rural Australians for Refugees at the home of Lyn Mulligan. We also hold

WHILE walking down Watkin Street, especially during spring, you would be forgiven for stopping in your tracks at the sight of number three.

A beautiful garden fills the front yard and creeps towards the street bursting with flowers, plants and statues.

Anne White has been nurturing her garden for 17 years, since she first moved to the house as a newlywed.

“I had already designed the front even before we had bought the house,” she said. “Only the garden bed near the house was here when we moved in and I stuck the agapanthus out the front and that’s just grown out towards the street.”

Anne said gardening was her passion and she spent time everyday working outside. “I’d go a bit crazy without the garden,” she said. “The kids are always saying, ‘Where’s mum? Oh, she’s out in the yard again’.”

Anne grew up in Connewarre and developed her love for gardening from her mother who was also a

green thumb. “I grew up on a farm and mum was a keen gardener; my sister and I definitely got our love for gardening from mum,” she said.

Many locals know the house as not only a garden to admire but the place to buy off-cuts for their own gardens at home. Anne has been selling plants to

fellow enthusiasts for more than 10 years, only slowing down when the drought hit in 2006.

“I hated wasting so much of the plants so I decided to start selling them out the front,” she said.

The process is self serve from the nature strip and Anne said people approached her in the

street to offer thanks. Anne is quite protective

of her garden and said she had laid every brick, dug every hole and planted every piece of foliage herself.

“I do it all myself and won’t let my husband near it, I haven’t even let him mow for the past 12 years,” she said, laughing.

OCEAN Grove is facing greener times as shown in these overhead photos of the town.

The two photos show very different views of the Ocean Grove Golf Club taken only two years apart.

Taken in February 2009, the dry, dusty golf course shows an Ocean Grove suffering the effects of years of drought and water restrictions. By the time the drought broke this year, Australians had endured at least 12 years of the big dry.

The Voice’s resident eye in the sky, John Norton, flew over Ocean Grove last month capturing the changes Victoria’s increased rainfall has made during the past twelve months.

It is amazing how quickly decent rain can completely change the natural environment.

The golf club is now flourishing with full lakes and a course that has changed from brown to green.

According to the weather station located at Ocean Grove CFA, the highest daily rainfall for this year was on February 4 when 56.1mm of rain was recorded.

AS PART of their Design Brief assessment task, Year 8 food technology students at Christian College Bellarine were asked to design and prepare a lunch for two people.

The students, including Sophia Loughrey and Jordyn Allen (pictured), worked in groups to prepare the food for their guests.

There were 12 guests in total who included a mixture of family, friends and teachers.

The students chose to cook a main and a dessert meal. Some of the considerations they needed to make were; dietary requirements, set budget, time limitations and presentation.

Cooking up a storm

GRADE 6 students at Our Lady Star of the Sea have taken it upon themselves to raise money for the World’s Greatest Shave. Student leaders Emma Riley and Bernadette Barry organised the fundraiser to donate money to cancer research and promoted it by colouring their hair blue and purple. Jak Bergman even took the plunge and shaved his head at the school’s Friday morning assembly.The students participated in the fundraiser as part of the school’s social justice initiative and collected donations from students and teachers last week.

OCEAN Grove Barwon Heads Lions have elected their new president and committee.

Howard Deane took over the lead role from outgoing president Brenda Walter (pictured) when members met for their changeover dinner at Club Grove.

Soon to be retiring Mr Deane was bank manager at the Bendigo Bank in Ocean Grove for more than a decade before taking over the role in Queenscliff two years ago.

Other board members elected were Graham

Corless (vice president), Phillip Scambler (second vice president), Ian Walter (secretary), Anita Featherston (treasurer), John Claringbold, Brian Mansfield, John Brady and Norm Spolding.

A good reason to travelA BUS full of Ocean Grovers travelled more than 200km up to Nagambie to help former RSL comrade Reg Guest celebrate his 90th birthday. Reg was a dedicated worker for the Grove RSL before retiring to live with his daughter Diane and her family. Members of the Ocean Grove sub-branch hired the mini bus for the trip and were joined by about 85 guests at the Nagambie Golf Club. During the celebrations Reg even joined in with the Nagambie Lakeside Larks choir.

THE pied currawong (pictured at Blue Waters Lake) is distinctive because of its bright yellow eyes and heavy, strong black bill. Pied currawongs are larger than magpies and they are mainly black with strips of white feathers underneath..

The pied currawong is bird native to eastern Australia, but is absent

from Tasmania. It is closely related to butcherbirds and magpies. Currawongs are sometimes confused with crows. They average around 48cm in length. The male and female are similar and have a distinctive and melodious call.

The habitat includes all kinds of forested areas. It has a diet that includes

a wide variety of berries and seeds, small reptiles, caterpillars, bird eggs and juvenile birds.

They also take a large number of small and young birds, especially around urban areas where suitable cover is scarce. Larger prey, up to the size of a young possum, is also taken.

Historic story on stageGEELONG Repertory is staging a new version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous classic Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

A gothic tale of love, lust and murderous intent, the story – an immediate success when it was published in 1886 – deals with the interplay between good and evil.

In this 2008 version, directed by Travis Eccles and starring Steven Georgiadis as Jekyll (pictured with Andrew Kelly) and Lauren O’Callaghan as both Jekyll and Hyde’s love interest. Several characters play Hyde, illustrating the important point of Stevenson’s masterpiece: good and evil coexist.

An innovative set and lighting plot, along with Victorian era costumes worn by a talented cast, creates an atmosphere of intrigue.

ONE of the biggest names in Australian comedy for more than three decades is coming to the Potato Shed.

Austen Tayshus is The Merchant of Menace and will perform for one night only on July 15 to give residents on the Bellarine a show they will never forget.

Best known for his 1983 hit Australiana, one of Australia’s highest selling singles, Austen Tayshus is one of Australia’s edgiest comedians with his uniquely insightful humour.

He has performed more than 10,000 shows in nightclubs, universities,

comedy clubs, pubs and theatres throughout Australia, New Zealand, UK, US, Fiji and Bali.

Austen wrote and starred in the film INTOLERANCE which received the Best Film Award at the 1998 Tropicana Film Festival and for which he won the Best Actor Award.

He has written for film and television, and his new biography, Austen Tayshus, The Merchant of Menace, written by Richard Murphy and Ross Fitzgerald was launched in May,

SOUL Longboard Club ran its second club championship round at Ocean Grove Main Beach recently. Tough and, at times, challenging conditions made for an interesting day of surfing, particularly for those who had to surf in heats, quarter-finals, semi-finals and then the final.

A big new swell and an incoming tide meant a lot of water was moving around making the paddle out a challenge and the surfing difficult as the banks were changing all the time.

Some great results have kept all the divisions well and truly alive. Birthday boy Paul Fletcher beat the ever-dominant Chris Meier in the over-45s. Jack Malone stepped up his surfing to finish second behind the very in-form Ben Considine in the junior Boys. Andy Smith took first in the over-35s to add another winner to that category.

The next club competition will be on July 16 and hopefully round three of the club championships. It will start at 7am at the Ocean Grove Main Beach.

This will also be the club’s mid-year function which will be held, after an absence of a few years, back in the SOUL bar at the

Ocean Grove Hotel. Live music, food and drinks, so come along.

U/17 Boys: Surfside 2 v Corio 15. A great start against one of the top teams had the Waves 2-0 up after 10 minutes. Unfortunately the quality of Corio’s better players proved too difficult to contain. Both Nic Goodwin and Stephen Campbell, who shared the goal keeping duties, were outstanding as well as Travis Edmonds at sweeper. Goal scorers: Will Cailes and Joe Dungey.

U/15 Boys: Surfside 4 v Surf Coast 0. The U/15 boys continued their winning run with another convincing performance to maintain their place at the top of the

table. Jacob Nicholsen, 3, and Dean Keegan, 1, were the scorers.

U/13 Boys: Breakwater Eagles 5 v Surfside 0. Another tough encounter for the Waves who are finding out what competitive soccer is all about.

U/12 Boys: Surfside 5 Vs Lara 1. The boys managed to find their winning form in this game. Starting strongly to lead 4-0 at half-time they went on to win 5-1. Connor O’Keefe scored one goal and Rory Dean four goals.

U/13 Girls: Surf Coast Yellow 2 v Surfside 0. Despite only having seven players the Waves dominated.

IN MEN’S Sunday league soccer division two, Surfside Waves have surged to the top of the table following three consecutive victories, including a win against Corio, 4-0.

In round seven they played at home to Corio

and it was Corio which dominated the first half but in-form goalkeeper Adrian Hawken pulled off a flurry of fine saves to keep the Waves level.

Just a few minutes before half time, the Waves actually took the lead. Gabe

McClellend’s perfectly weighted through ball allowed Staffan Hargreaves to muscle his way past the Corio defence and slot the ball through.

The second half started much as the first with Corio again dominating play and

putting the Waves defence under constant pressure. But with one of their few counter attacks the Waves managed to take a surprise 2-0 lead.

Corio came storming back, but Adrian Hawken refused to be beaten in

the Waves goal, pulling off several more great saves to frustrate the away team.

The scoring was completed just before the final whistle when Lewis McClellend showed great vision in curling a cross over the stricken Corio defence.

THE Surfside Waves Blue U/11 team has had a wonderful start to the season this year. After six games the team has won five and lost one, scoring a total of 35 goals and conceding only 11. The boys put in a tremendous effort as a team each week under the guidance of coach Cam Plapp. All the junior Surfside Waves teams give it their best each week and enjoy every moment of their games. In round seven the Blues defeated the Reds, 2-0.

WomendestroyRangersSURFSIDE Waves senior women posted the biggest win of their season against Geelong Rangers, winning 15-0 at Myers Reserve.

The Waves played some great one touch football with Carla D’Alessandro grabbing four. The Rangers goalkeeper was kept very busy and had an outstanding game between the sticks. Lethal Lara Williams grabbed another hat-trick as she netted four.

Coach Ado said: “I had the senior men’s team coach Chris Puttyford wanting to play my front two this weekend against Corio.

“Rangers had a 20-minute period when they stopped the Waves scoring. All credit to them for not giving up.”

Molly ‘Supersonic’ Strano grabbed a brace. Meridith ‘Pacy’ Plummer also put in a fine shift on the left flank.

The Waves now need to take stock on this fine win and push on to finals and keep playing their free-flowing West Ham-style of play.

THE all-conquering U/12 Bellarine Storm girls have notched up their third tournament win since coming together late last year.

With wins in Warrnambool and Eltham already this season, the girls headed to Ballarat, on the long weekend, confident of another good showing.

This time they took out the division one section of the Ballarat Junior Tournament.

Coach Brendon Matthews was thrilled with the big win.

“This is another fantastic result for the girls who have trained hard all season and thoroughly deserve the rewards,” he said.

He said this was just another notch on the belt for the U/12 Storm which has already taken out

the Warnambool Seaside Classic and the Australia Day Eltham/Dandenong Tournament. The side also achieved a very respectable third at the Junior

Country Championships. Next on the list for the girls will

be to make finals in the Victorian Championship Reserve Section of the VJBL Friday competition.

THE Cobras U/14 2 battled Geelong Amateur at home. The boys knew they had their work cut out as the Amos kicked three quick goals early on.

Fletcher Sharrock was getting lots of the ball and laid some great tackles. Daniel Ryan and Muffin Smith were working hard in defence, while Hamish Drake broke through with a major after laying a great tackle. After a 10-point deficit at quarter time, the Cobras really stepped up in the second.

Riley Feather was busy, with Daniel Spence establishing himself as a great ruckman. The back line put in a big effort and reduced the margin to seven by half-time.

Jake LeMaistre and Mark Beness led a great team effort in the third quarter resulting in the Cobras being up by three points.

With a close game on their hands, Zane Leist, Fletcher Sharrock and Vincent McDonald combined with a fantastic goal. Play was halted, unfortunately, when Tom Beasly was carried off suffering heavy concussion.

The boys knew they still had unfinished business and soon put another on the board. Jack Preistly

contributed solidly as the whole team finished strongly to win by 10.

ON ANOTHER typical cool damp morning at the Snake Pit, the Cobra U/10 Whites hosted the visiting Anglesea side.

The players were quickly away with a haul of goals to Ross Symonds, Felix Drayton, Mitchell Clark, Lucy McEvoy and Lleyton Woolley.

Excellent teamwork from the centre clearances with Tom Ness, Luke Giblin, Felix Drayton and James Giblin in charge, allowing for frequent and rapid forward incursions into the Cobras forward line. Anglesea started a number of tags but the players responded to the challenge.

The second quarter had the Cobras kicking into a slight breeze and resulted in four goals for the quarter.

Anglesea also made a number of forward thrusts but was constantly thwarted by some excellent defence from Charlie McEvoy, Mitchell Arumetts and

Eden Vince. Will Owen bagged a goal in the quarter after spending most of the season in midfield and down back.

In the third quarter the rain came and so did the goals, the team adapting really well to the wet and banged on six majors.

Mitch Taylor and Tom Ness really turned on the heat with three goals and two goals for the quarter.

The C Grade went down to the top side 13-3 after the starting pitcher had to retire with a suspected broken wrist.

As for the uniforms, the old sleeveless tops have been replaced by a more traditional sleeved jumper in the Bellarine Bears colours.

“The new jumpers are blue with a white trim around the neck and down the centre, with Bears in red writing,” said club president David Crotty.

The club’s players have gone from wearing grey pants to white ones and retained the red undershirt that was part of the old uniform. With seven games left in the season, the A Grade side is in danger of missing the finals, the Bs should play finals and the C team is sitting pretty on top.

The club is always on the lookout for new players. A program for children aged 4 to 10, interested in getting involved in the sport, is being held at Stead Park on July 21. Call David Crotty for details, 0418 520 259.

In the early game, Ocean Grove was too strong for Anglesea, winning by 25 points, 12.11 (83) to 9.4 (58).

Coach Adrian Stapleton said the side began the game brilliantly but lost a few players to injury in the second half. Joe

Hinkley, Sean Britt, Tim Baker, Callum Jones and James Stapleton all played well.

“We were also able to get (co-coach) Kane Montgomery on to the park today, which was good,” Adrian said.

In the under 18s, Ocean Grove beat Anglesea by 14 goals, to shore up third spot and keep their hopes of defending their premiership alive.

THE Grubbers returned to the top of the ladder with a 127 point win against Portarlington a week and a half ago, 21.14 (182) to 8.7 (55)

Portarlington belied their lowly position on the ladder with a competitive opening term, before Ocean Grove put its foot down to dominate the remaining three quarters of the game.

Pete Corredig continued his run of good form with a five-goal haul, but the win was soured by a knee injury to key onballer Luke Sinnott who will miss six to eight weeks with a torn medial ligament.

“At this stage it’s a

medial,” said coach Cameron McGregor. “They have to wait three weeks for the swelling to go down to completely rule out an ACL, but at this stage it’s an eight week injury.”

It was an innocuous incident. After jumping to receive a handball his knee buckled underneath him when he went to push off.

After the game coach Cameron McGregor said: “We started quietly and they started well. But it was pleasing we were able to pull away to a 120-point win in the end.”

McGregor cited Sam Fairway, Shane Jack and Greg Costello as players

to come back against Anglesea, but Travis Gavin is still another week away with a groin strain.

“We’ve been playing reasonably,” McGregor said in the lead up to the Anglesea clash, which gives the Grubbers a chance to go eight points and percentage clear of a rival for a coveted top three spot.

“We feel we’ve been tuning up to this game and we’ve got a pretty potent forward line, which is only getting stronger with Shane Jack coming back, so hopefully we can get it in there and put some scoreboard pressure on them early,” he said.

SHAUN ‘Red’ Fankhauser did what every footballer dreams of when he kicked truly after the siren to give the Grubbers a six point win against Anglesea at Alcoa Oval, 17.9 (111) to16.9 (105).

In a game where neither side held momentum for any meaningful length of time it seemed like Anglesea had grabbed it at just the right time when they drew level with the Grubbers with five minutes to play in the final term.

The young Grubbers showed a maturity that pleased coach Cameron McGregor when they wrestled the momentum back. The ball spent the last minutes of the game in a rolling scrum of players in the Grubbers forward line, with intense pressure being applied to the Anglesea defenders who couldn’t clear the ball. However, the Grubbers still couldn’t get the score they required.

In the dying seconds a quick kick out of a pack landed in Red’s hands. The backman-turned-forward, who had played a good shut-down role on one of Anglesea’s running defenders and kicked four goals while he was at it, took his time lining up the shot.

He began his run up before the siren sounded and didn’t break stride when it went. A point would have won it but he kicked the goal, giving the Grubbers a well-deserved win and hurting Anglesea’s finals aspirations.

The Grubbers cause wasn’t helped when Greg Costello and Shane Jack were withdrawn

from the side late in the week. In spring-like conditions — windy and sunny — the game was played with a finals intensity with a lot of pressure around the ball.

“I am absolutely stoked with the win,” said McGregor after the game. “With the two big outs we went into the game slightly undermanned, so to get away with a win was great. Anglesea are always hard to beat out here,

even when they’re not going well, let alone when they’re pushing for finals.”

He was full of praise for Red’s game as a defensive forward and was also impressed with defender Bernie Lynch, who shone under pressure, time and again taking marks on the last line of defence and clearing the ball to the advantage of his teammates.

“He was exceptional again.

He’s so hard to get passed down there, but he plays an instructional role as well,” said McGregor. “I thought the side’s work rate and pressure was really good as well.”

The top of the table clashes keep coming for the Grubbers as they move towards the business end of the season, playing Geelong Amateurs away next week. Jack and Costello will both likely be available,

creating a pleasing dilemma for McGregor, who was adamant he wouldn’t make changes for change’s sake.

Other good players for the Grubbers on the day were the ever-reliable senior onballers Jimmy Dalton and Rowan O’Callaghan. Defensively, Harry Foott did a good job on David Mensch and Marcus Smith was well-held by Kane Reardon.

OCEAN Grove baseball players stepped out in new uniforms on the weekend and celebrated with a win against Deakin, 2-1, in A Grade.

It was a top-notch battle and Simon Murry made an outstanding effort for Bellarine, pitching the entire game, giving up seven hits and striking out five Deakin batters.

In the field Chris Barker made some outstanding defensive plays at shortstop. The best players with the bat were Brad McKentish with two hits and one run batted in. Wayne Visser, 2, Nathan Paul, 2, Adam O’Keefe, one hit and one run.
