Nightmare!

God forbid, but what if I were givenonly one minute from the manupstairs to describe this past WorldChampionship to a group of peoplewho had never experienced the thrillof being there in person! The reason Iwould have difficulty in this task isbecause I didn’t get to see it! I did nothave time to admire everyone’s carv~ings; I did not have time to absorb thegreat workshops; I did not have timeto greet and talk to and/or meet allmy carving friends from all over theU.S., Canada, England, Mexico, SouthAfrica and Saudi Arabia. Can youbelieve there were 864 carvers with2,362 carvings? There were 217 pro.fessionals with 774 carvings; 204amatuers with 631 carvings; and 447novices with 937 carvings. We wereassured there were over 750 carversthere in person! My committee and Iwere very pleased but overwhelmedwith a 30% increase in carvers andcarvings. We ran out of everything butpride.

Without the hard work by my committee, volunteers, and members ofthe Ward Foundation, this affair couldnot be, and naturally since I work thehardest I am allowed to remain chairman. To all of you who helped goesall the praise and applause from thosewho attended and my special thanksand appreciation for a job well done.Richard Schiebel, the Ward Foundation’s greatest booster, arrives herefrom Minnesota each year and worksfrom the time he arrives ‘til the lastbird is packed Sunday night. Thereare not enough words to express myfeeling to people like Richard, Jimand Beebe Hopper of California,Eugene Folse from Louisiana andJoan and Harold McAllister from NewCarrollton, Md. who helped out when
