Maximizing the benefit coming from the use of nuclear technologywhile minimizing risks in safety, security and proliferation

Mission

• HQ in Vienna, Austria

• 2 research centres (Monaco and Seibersdorf)

IAEA involved in Ocean Acidification studies

Regarding the environment, by mandate, the IAEA is active in

the field of monitoring and protecting the environment from

ionising radiations, but also in any field where isotopic and

nuclear applications are relevant to understand and/or solve

environmental issues.

Geochronology (radiological dating) + Paleo-climatology (isotopic ratio

analysis): powerful tools that allow reconstructing prevailing environmental

conditions over last decades to millennia to calibrate and improve descriptive

and predictive models

Isotopes used as proxies :

e.g., B-11/B-10 for past pH

Environmental recorders:

-sediment cores

-ice cores

-coral skeleton

Unique tools to assess biological effects

under projected pCO2

scenarios, identify

vulnerable organisms, evaluate potential

coastal economic impacts (fisheries,

aquaculture, ecosystem services), e.g.:

• Use of Ca-45 to assess growth and

calcification rates

• Use of C-14 to assess primary

production of marine phytoplankton

• Use of radio-tracers to assess change

in pollutant availability

Background:

US-supported extra-budgetary CRP

(Coordinated Research Project) funded

for 4 years

Overall objectives:

• Assess biological and social effects due

to ocean acidification in key ecological

sites south of 30°N.

• Identify vulnerable regions and

communities.

• Evaluate coastal economic impacts from

ocean chemistry change on a regional

scale using bio-economic models.

Coordinated Research Project:“Ocean Acidification and Economic Impacts on Fisheries”

Activities 2011/2012:

• October 2011: Consultancy Meeting

• Nov 2012: 1st Coordination Meeting (8 contracts)

Upcoming:

• 2013: Project development and additional participants (2)

• 2014: Regional training workshop on OA impact modelling

Rio+20 outcome document, paragraph 166:

“We call for support to initiatives that address ocean acidification and the

impacts of climate change on marine and coastal ecosystems and

resources. In this regard, we reiterate the need to work collectively to

prevent further ocean acidification, as well as enhance the resilience of

marine ecosystems and of the communities whose livelihoods depend on

them, and to support marine scientific research, monitoring and

observation of ocean acidification and particularly vulnerable ecosystems,

including through enhanced international cooperation in this regard.”

project, supported by direct and in-kind

contributions from several Member States

and research programmes on ocean

acidification.

•Objective: act as a platform to communicate,

promote and facilitate overarching activities

on ocean acidification that must be

performed at the international level to make

effective use of previous and current science

investments

•End Users: scientific community and science

users (e.g., policy makers, media, general

public)
