THE DUXGARVAN FARMS-
A friend in McIntosh advised meto drive by and take a peep at theDungarvan Farms lying from oneto four miles southwest of this village-by the lake I had never met theowner Mr S H Gaitskill but fromthe description given me had notrouble in recognizing this true typeof old Kentucky blood when I methim riding in on horseback from hisfarm to his picturesque home intown He waybilled me to his manager Mr Rhodes R Whittington-who with his interesting wife andtwo sweet babies live out on thefarm
This farm consists of three hundredacres
The leading product of the farm isShorthorn Durham beef cattle and
I
there is some beauties of this typeI there The entire stock of cattle is
about two hundred and fifty headI
These cattle are pastured altogetherunless fed a little in the dead of win¬
ter on velvet beans and other pro ¬
ducts of the farm They have soldabout forty good beef steers this sea¬
son at a remarkably good price Iwas shown two fine bulls threefourths blood that will be for salethis season They arebeauties to saythe least All different breeds arekept in separate pastures thereforekeeping the blood and breeds pure
All owners of fine cattle shouldj
take a look over the thanFarms
Eighty five sheep have recentlybeeh added to the live stock Ofthese there is six pure blood Dorsettemutton sheep that will be used forbreeding in several different respects
Eightyfive Berkshire hogs are now
S4
on the farm They are sold gross foi5c per pound One ofthe ehoggwas butchered last season and out
of which the hams alone after being
smoothly turned weighed 25 pounds
each The hogs here are fed principally on velvet beans being turnedmon the beans just before maturity
There is one hundred and fifty healof goats common scrub and Angorawhich are being crossed resulting-
in a splendid animal Some February kids were recently butcherecwhich weighed six pounds to thequarter-
The agricultural feature of thefarm is interesteng and instructiveWithin it lies a lesson that every
farmer in Marion county should learna lesson of proved farm machin-ery and its uses
There are about one hundred anc
fifty acres planted to corn fifty acres
of which are also planted in velvetbeans Let me pause just here tcsay these are beyond a doubt the
finest velvet beans the writer hasever seen Riding close by them on
horseback it is impossible to ridethrough them ones head is justhigh enough above the solid mat of
vines to see over The tangled mass
is perfectly level on top like a largegrape arbor and the vines are very I
heavily fruited It is reliably esti¬
mated that the fifty acres will make-
an average yield of forty bushels ofbeans to the acre
r I
It is the managers opinion thatthe corn will average twentyfivebushels some will go as high as thirtyfive
Among the farm implements weI
we noticed one fourmule Deering-
corn harvester cuts and binds six
acres of good corn per day A Deering oat harvester cuts and binds five
acres per day with two mules A

Give the W men a Trial
In twentyfive states charges ofgraft are being or have been re-
cently¬
under investigation Thisdoes not include the deparment ofagriculture and the public printing¬
fice at Washington Such a state ofpolitical affairs might operate to pre ¬
vent women from wishing to assumeany responsibility as a governing fac¬
tor were it not that the underlying-force in the woman suffrage move¬
ment is a sense of duty and a feelingthat womans criminality in thesepolitical matters has been her indiffer ¬
ence andwillingness tojshirk the right¬
ful duties and burdens of citizenshipThinking men are beginning to feeltheir inability to cope with the grow¬
ing dishonesty in public life and tofeel that in some way they ought tohave the aid of the reserve moralforce ttere is in women Often dothey sign eagerly a woman suffragepetition saying Yes I am lor that i
women cannot do any worse thanmen have done and I believe in giv¬

PROHIIITIOH DOES NOT prOIlIIT
To the Editor Ocala Banner I
Permit me to use your columns inanswering the overzealous misleading expostulations of our worthcounty school superintendent and ap
prentice reformer Mr CamSMr Cam in his article in the Even-
ing Star wants to know whether thegrantees of liquor permits issued by
the board of our county commission-
ers at their last meeting can do business without United States licenseNow is this not an intelligent inquiry
I coming from one who is supposed toenlighten our future generation-will
Iassist you Mr Cam All people
engaging in any kind of business requiring United States license have tocomply with that statute first justhe same as they have to procurestate and county license second andif doing business in any incorporatestown city license third This is toprocure revenue to pay the running
expenses of the different branches ofdirect government
Now that I have enlightened Mr
Cam about United States license Idesire to state that I am not only reliably informed but I know that twcof those 13 permits granted will not
be materialized and have reliable information that another making threewill not be used thus leaving only 1C
as we now have in the county-
Mr Carn says he is possessed of
reliable information that there are
six blind tigers already in Marioncounty It would seem to the ordi ¬
nary citizen that Mr Cams duty as
the ardent reformer which he pro ¬
fesses to be to say nothing of his be ¬
ing a county official is if he is pos ¬
sessed of such reliable information-to immediately have his reliable in-
formant procure the necessary affi ¬
davits and put these men in tigersclothes in the county jail
Mr Cam has placed himself on thehorns of a dilemma He has either a
reliable information etc or he hasnot If he has and does not put itat the service of the county officials-
heI
is wilfully neglectful of his duty-
as a reformer as a citizen and as acounty official or if he claims thathis information is not sufficient toconvict how does he expect to stopthe illegal sale of liquor in a dry I
county if such reliable information-as
I
he boasts of possessing is useless-
in a wet county-
If there are six blind tigers now in-
a wet county which Mr Carn and I
his reliably information cannot putan end to how many blind tigers I
does he expect to be in operation in I
the same county if dry I
Now Mr Cam why keep on pra ¬
ting prohibition does prohibit whenI
you furnish proof that it does notAbout Alachua Mr Carn seems to
be very well pooled as to her blindtiger business He tells you that outof the fifteen United States licenseholders six were put behind the barsMaybe he also attributes the allegedprosperity of Alachua county to the
I
flourishing of blind tigers there buthe has not told you yet what has beIcome of the remaining nine blindtigers which he admits exist by say-
ing
¬
that only nine remain there nowwhilst Marion county being wet hasonly six blind tigers according tohis reliable or unreliable infor ¬
mation as the case may beYes Mr Cam you have furnished
proof that prohibition does not pro¬
hibit Yours very trulyJOHN JERRY
