Try as many things as you can in college. There will never be

another time in your life where you have so many opportuni-ties thrown at you. Don’t care about what other people think and be yourself, it will be more

fulfilling.

-Erica Hong ‘01

Don’t worry too much about

choosing what you are going to

do “for the rest of your life”

right away. Enjoy the time that

you have in college or whatever

you choose to do, because it will

go fast. Your career will fall

right into place if you work hard

and pursue what interests you.

Keep in touch with old friends,

but make new ones. Don’t for-

get about your family and tell

them you love them often!

-Amy (Moy) Dufek ‘02

Don’t be too scared if you don’t know exactly what you want to do when you start college. Col-lege is when you get to figure that out. I would say in general, don’t be afraid to do too much of anything in college. Make sure to take a few classes that have nothing to do with your major. I took a storytelling class my senior year and it was one of the courses that had a large impact on my life. Try to live off campus for at least one year so you learn how to deal with things like leases and landlords. Finally, choose your friends wisely: the friends you make in college will probably be the ones you take with you for the rest of your life. Focus on quality over quantity. -Justin Koh ‘98

Always believe in yourself.

-Wen Tyan Soo ‘93

Do what is in your heart, and take any opportunities that may arise. Understand that there are never mistakes, just ex-periences that let you grow to become a better person.

-Linda Ting ‘99

Take the time to explore new fields

and redefine your priorities – no need

to rush things!

- Diana Wu ‘96

Enjoy Life. Take this time to edu-cate yourself holistically – academi-cally, practically, and culturally.

Work Hard to Play Hard. –Wendy Gong ‘95

Like my dad says, “take time

to smell the roses.”

-Erin Marra ‘02

Page 5: OCA-WI Scholarship 20th Anniversary

Get involved with activities on campus, whether it would be volunteering or join-ing a club! Keep yourself occupied, but

don’t get too overwhelmed with all of that and schoolwork.

-Alyson Moy ‘07

Never give up on your dreams -

but be prepared to work hard

for them!

-Vanessa Tsang ‘03

Know that you have options and the time to explore those options. Many students feel pressured to know their major course of study as early as their freshman year, but in reality, the first few semesters of college should be used as a testing period to explore the various subjects that you might feel passionate about. Also, if given the opportunity, STUDY ABROAD! I never had the opportunity to do this, and it is one thing that I will always wish I had been able to participate in.

–Jessica Hsia ‘03

Take advantage of as many experiences

as you can…..be open-minded! Study

abroad or take a class that you would

not normally (dance, language, science,

etc….) Learn to be organized and make

sure you are able to play on your skill

strengths and develop on your areas of

opportunities. Establish mentors and

remain connected with friends and fam-

ily. Stay balanced and have fun!

Best of luck!

~ Do what you love, do it better and

more creatively than it has ever been

done before, and do it passionately to

help people. The world will "get it." ~

-Emily Chin ‘02

Work hard in college, but don’t forget to enjoy your time there too. These will be some of the best years of your life, memories and friend-ships to treasure for a lifetime. Be open to new experiences but always keep true to who you are. And if you get a chance to travel/study abroad, seriously consider it! Best of luck and much success!

-Lynn Chia ‘89

Get involved, get out there and don’t stay in your dorm room! I know it’s a

bit cliché, but there’s a whole world of activities, people and places to ex-

plore that I’m even still finding in my final year! -Alex Chin ‘04

Stay on top of your schoolwork in college, but it is just as im-portant to create meaningful

friendships. They’ll not only be there when you’re having fun, but they’ll also get you through

all the hard times and all-nighters. -Diana Chan ‘05

OCA-WI Scholarship Program 1988-2008

The OCA-WI Scholarship Program was established in 1988. Its mission remains the same today; to recognize college-bound high school graduates, who are children of OCA-WI members and business affiliates, for their academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and commitment of service to the Chinese American community and beyond. As of 2008, ninety-six scholarships will have been awarded.

The Scholarship Committee is grateful to OCA-WI, CACC, and the many individual donors and businesses who have contributed to the scholarship endowment and general funds. Please con-sider the OCA-WI Scholarship in your financial planning. OCA-WI is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization, and all contributions are tax deductible. Donations are always welcome.

A BIG THANK YOU...

to all the Trustees for their time and dedication and to the many kind individuals who have sup-

ported the Scholarship Program for the past 20 years.

OCA– WI Scholarships

1. The OCA-WI General Scholarships are awarded annually to deserving high school graduates for their academic achievements and service to the OCA and community.

2. The Arsenio & Co Bit Siy Scholarship (est. 1993) is awarded annually by Drs. Lucio and Conchita Siy to promote the strength of the Chinese-American community in remembrance of Dr. Lucio’s parents. They immigrated to the Philippines from Quanzhou, Fujian in the 1920's where they set up a business and raised their family.

3. The RP & JL Carr Social Justice Scholarship (est. 2008) is awarded annually by the Janet Lew Carr Family to graduate students pursuing advanced degrees related to social justice. This merit award is established in memory of Richard Peter Carr, and to encourage aspiring APA leaders to actualize a diverse democracy. Mr. Carr was a stalwart peacemaker, distin-guished attorney and mentor, selfless community volunteer, and devout family man.

4. The OCA-WI Memorial Fund Scholarships are awarded annually in memory of the fol-lowing individuals on a rotating basis:

•The Professor Kwang Yu Memorial Scholarship: established by Mrs. Maryanne Tsao and her family in remembrance of her late father. Professor Yu was an educator, agri-cultural economist and expert in land reform.

•The Dr. Benjamin P.C. Ho & Mrs. Lien-Hwa (T'ao) Ho Memorial Scholarship: established by the late Dr. Benjamin Ho and son, Gordon Ho. Mrs. Ho was an accom-plished microbiologist and a devoted mother and wife. Dr. Ho was a senior mechanical en-gineer at the Allis-Chalmers Corporation and a loving father and husband.

•The Benjamin Tsong-Wei Wu Memorial Scholarship: established by the late Pro-fessor Samuel Wu and Mrs. Daisy Wu in remembrance of their beloved son. Tsong-Wei was a 26-year-old mechanical engineering doctoral student at Northwestern University.

•The Professor Shien-Ming (Samuel) Wu Memorial Scholarship: established by Mrs. Daisy Wu in remembrance of her beloved husband. Professor Wu was an internation-ally recognized scholar and pioneer in manufacturing engineering who helped modernize automobile factories and worldwide industries. He was a professor of mechanical engineer-ing at the UW for 30 years before joining the University of Michigan.

•The Yulin & King Ying Hsi Memorial Scholarship: established by Mrs. Clarice Chou in remembrance of her parents. Mr. Hsi was China's first certified public account-ant. Mrs. Hsi was an expert in Chinese herbal medicine.

•The Maryanne Yu Tsao Memorial Scholarship: established by Professor Tsao and his family in remembrance of his wife. Mrs. Tsao was the founder and tireless fundraiser of the Scholarship Committee. She was a biochemist, clinical biochemist, CFP, and she had a great green thumb!

College is a time where you will learn so much about yourself and have experiences that you will never forget. Live, laugh, love. Don’t forget that besides the classes and exams, there are a lot of different people out there to meet and help you grow. Not all the lessons you learn in college will be in the classroom. Treasure the time you have because it flies by, make lasting friendships, and understand that sometimes you have to make mistakes in order to learn and move forward. Most importantly, have fun!

-Carrie Woltman ‘05

It is important to do well, but don’t stress out too much. College is a really great experience and you should try as many new things as

possible. –Mary Kao ‘06

Try new things. Study what you love and make a career of it.

-Richard Hsia ‘99

Don’t take school too seriously… take educa-

tion seriously! Try a lot of things and find out

what your passions are, and pursue them. We

Chinese Americans have a lot in common,

let’s figure out how to leverage our strengths

and become leaders and change agents in the

world.

-Dale Ting ‘96

Have an open mind to college. You will meet people from all walks of life, even if you think you’ve experienced it all. It is quite an eye opening experience, and the more that you allow yourself to be open to new ideas, and other people’s ways of living and their takes on life the more satisfied you will become of your experience in college, mainly because it will provide an awesome opportunity for you to find your own life path. Also, don’t go into college set on a major. If you aren’t enjoying what you are majoring in, I would definitely suggest trying other classes that may spark your in-terest, or talk to career counselors. The longer you wait to make a decision about your major, the more time you may have to spend in college to make up for not know-ing what you want to do with your life. Lastly, the dorm you live in will make up a huge part of how your social life will be. If you live in a close quarters dormitory it will be very easy to make friends since you all live and interact almost every day. However, if you’re dorm is more apartment styled, you live off campus, or commute, I would definitely suggest joining student organizations or clubs ASAP in order to meet people who share the same interests as you. –Brandon Hoeft ‘06

If you have the opportu-nity to travel and see the world, this is the best time of your life to do it. While traveling is costly, money can always be earned back but time cannot.

-Moneta Ho ‘94

Page 7: OCA-WI Scholarship 20th Anniversary

Sometimes it takes a while to figure

out what you want to do, especially

in college. Once you figure out what

your passion is, don’t let outside

forces get in your way. If you have

confidence in yourself, you won’t

need to rely on outside forces to

move you along your path. Every-

thing will fall into place.

–Christine Liu ‘98

Enjoy life, don’t work too hard, travel while you can and make time for your friends and family – don’t let life get too busy to hold onto the im-portant things. Find something to be passion-ate about – find a job you love and a hobby you can lose yourself in – it’ll make you a happier and healthier person. You have a bright future ahead and I wish you all the best!

-Deborah Wu ‘96

Pursue your dreams. Money can be tempting, but

doing what you love fills your soul. Entering col-

lege is one of the best points in your life – a

chance to find out not only who you are, but to

grow into who you want to be. Be generous,

kind, and honest to those around you. Enjoy life!

- Sean Riley ‘96

Just tell them what they want to hear and any-body will hire you.

-Max Lam ‘00

To the Class of 2008, pursue your dreams. Keep an open mind and try everything at least once. You never know what you will like and where you will find in-spiration. Do what you love and you will enjoy your life.

-Thomas Lai ‘95

Remember your family and appre-

ciate what you’ve been given.

-Sarah Wong ‘05

Don’t be dissatisfied by what you don’t have or be disappointed by failures. Rather, be open to the world of opportunities and appreciate

the immense gifts in life you have been given. Seize opportunities and be open to where life takes you.

Be ready for change and focus on what is right. Find truths in mis-takes and learn from every experience.

Have passion for whatever you do. And take pride in knowing you did your best. Admit you are not perfect, but always strive to be.

Serve others and share your life and livelihood. Be generous. It’s far more fun to give than to receive.

-Jerome Siy ‘90

Always continue to challenge yourself in new ways!

Question your assumptions about people, and form relationships you wouldn’t expect to have.

Fall in love with your college/university. –Devon Cupery ‘07

The best way to survive college is to have some structure in your life. Also try to stay active as much as possible. I found that my best weeks were the ones that I worked out. Don’t stay up too late….and

don’t eat too much dorm food. -Clayton Tsang ‘07

Find out what you like to do and try to find a way to make money doing

it.

Have faith in yourself. If worse comes to worse rely on your family and

friends.

If you move, keep in touch with the ones you like and the ones you love.

Milk tea is good by itself, but when you add boba it becomes something

different and amazing. Find your boba.

–Winston Lee ‘97

As you venture out into the world on your own, don’t

be afraid of anything. If there’s anything you’ve ever

wanted to do, just do it. You can always fall back on

something later or take it easier. But you won’t al-

ways be able to take off and travel the world, experi-

ment, or do something crazy. Make as many new

friends and contacts as you can, because these are

the people that will help you and be with you for the

rest of your life. –Jon King ‘00

1. Man is not perfect so more than likely neither is the system he created so think unconvention-ally because just when you think you can’t.....you can!

2. Be proactive and not reactive. 3. Take care of this earth.

-Leslie Chan ‘94

Transition to college life may be dif-ficult at first, but as long as you stay involved and are open to new op-portunities, you will find it very re-warding. Work hard and try not to

join too many organizations/groups your first year. Don’t forget to sleep!

-Megan Yee ‘06

Since I am only four years older than the Class of 2008, I am not sure how much useful advice I can offer, but here it goes. Enjoy your college years because it is a

unique time in your life, a time when eve-ryone around you is in the same place in

life, you function somewhat as an inde-pendent, and you have more free time. Take advantage of the opportunities your school has to offer. Take your studies seri-

ously and try your best but try not to stress yourself out.

-Vicky Lee ‘04

Page 9: OCA-WI Scholarship 20th Anniversary

Participate in as many activities as you can in college

Volunteer somewhere

Don’t eat or drink too much (the freshman 15 is not a myth)

Get to know your professors

Enjoy every day of the college experience before it is gone

-William Kao ‘04

Do as many internships as you possibly

can—this is how you’ll find out whether

you really like what you’ve set out to do.

Also, if you plan to go to graduate school,

it’s a good idea to get some work experi-

ence in the field beforehand. You’ll know

that much more than people who have

never been in “the real world.”

You’ll get out of school what you put into

it, and don’t forget that it probably won’t

be a straight line from classes to a job.

Sometimes the other things you do in

your life lead to good things for your fu-

ture too.

-Lindsay King ‘96

Enjoy your new-found independ-

ence as you leave home for the first

time. Travel as much as possible;

experience new opportunities as

they are presented to you; do as

many crazy things as you are in-

clined to try. The next 15 years

will fly by faster than you can

imagine (you will probably not

fully realize this until you get

there). It is really nice to be able to

think back to those days and recall

all the fun things I experienced, and

to have great friendships with peo-

ple that I met during that time.

-Angela Chen ‘92

Don’t be afraid of the unknown. You don’t need to know all of the answers…what’s more impor-tant is that you’re asking the right questions, even

of yourself.

Cherish your family and friends. Accept and love your parents for everything that they are. They

love you in the best way they know, and they know more than you think they do.

Find and nurture your passions.

Learn something from every situation. Learn to laugh at yourself. Ask yourself how you can be of service to others, then go do it. Foster a sense of gratitude. Believe in karma now, because as you

go through life, you’ll see that it exists.

Set your goals, work hard, and whatever the out-come, remember that everything happens for a reason…everything unfolds as it should.

-Carmelita Tiu ‘93

When you’re tired, step away from the

computer.

-Sarah Wong ‘05

If you put in the time and effort, great

things will come. Don’t expect any-

thing to fall onto your lap – you have

to earn it!!

-Terri Moy ‘93

Get actively involved with organiza-

tions that you feel strongly about…as

this is great way to give back to causes

you feel are important and it also be-

comes the most effective method of in-

formal networking. –Milton Hwang ‘89

Create a plan and stick to it: Set your goals and de-velop a realistic plan to achieve them.

Don’t forget the details: You’ll stay ahead of the curve by paying attention to the details that others overlook.

Welcome challenges: All of you will have promising

futures, but to reach them, you’ll encounter many ob-stacles. Welcome the challenges and they will help you

grow stronger.

Be practical: Always try to follow your interests, but don’t forget to keep your priorities straight and be prac-

tical.

Finally, don’t forget to listen to your parents! -Bryan Chan ‘90

Advice to the Grads

Never forget your roots or your

family. By far, my family is the

most important aspect of my life.

Achievements, honors, awards,

and money are wonderful – but by

themselves cannot give you true,

lasting happiness.

-Erick P. Chan ‘91

Set your goals long term and strive

for them. Don’t be down on yourself

with any obstacles that may get in

the way.

-Ludwig Moy ‘97

Get a job. Get Married. Pay your taxes.

Use Compact Fluorescent bulbs. Don’t

watch reality TV, it rots your brain.

-Weikang Nicholas Ni ‘04

Since we’ve already established that I am al-

most ready to qualify for “old geezer” status, I

do have a few misshapen pearls of wisdom to

offer:

Life is what you make of it. If you suffer a set-

back, don’t dwell on it; just pick yourself off

and move on.

Always do a quality job on whatever task you

are working on, no matter how menial.

Treat everyone you work with in business with

respect, including and especially service peo-

ple, support staff and those who work for you.

Sometimes these people can really be helpful

to you in emergencies, so it’s good to be

friendly with them.

Also, always make full use of your resources.

Make sure you take the time to participate in

different activities in college, take different

classes, and meet different people. Whether at

work or at school, don’t be afraid to ask people

for help. Most people want to be helpful, and

those that aren’t, aren’t really worth your time.

-Elaine Lee ‘88

First of all, congratulations! You have made it through a very impor-

tant milestone! I am sure you are feeling very excited about your

future. I remember how I felt in your shoes nearly 20 years ago!

Undoubtedly you are already on solid footing because of the care,

attention, and love that your parents gave to you all these years.

Great times are ahead! In terms of advice, I would advise the gradu-

ates to cherish their personal relationships. You each will accom-

plish many great things. However, in the final analysis, you will find

that the most important things in life are the solid relationships that

you develop over your lifetime. One final word of advice- don't

forget your parents! As you mature, you will find them to be a great

source of wisdom and also find them to be wonderful friends. Best

wishes to you all!

Jobs Probably about 15 jobs total, including summer and part time jobs.

Favorite OCA memory Dancing in the Folk Fair as a little girl; helping out in the Folk Fair Chinese food booth with my Dad; going to the OCA/Civic Club Christmas parties and running around with my little brother and the other kids.

My OCA graduation party I remember dancing while holding my little sister Vicky, who was about 1 year old at the time. Now she is a college graduate, heading off to medical school! I guess that qualifies me, not only as a part of history, but also as (gasp) OLD, but I don’t feel that old!

Personal Statement

I have been living here in the Bay Area for the past 8 years. Seven years ago, I became a homeowner in the overheated Bay Area housing market. Now I am living in an airy, bright condo on top of a mountain, with fabulous mountain views and San Francisco city views. Since my job is 40 miles away in San Jose, I also have one of the Bay Area’s fa-mous long commutes, but since I love where I live and love San Francisco and the ocean, it is worth it to me.

Favorite OCA memory My favorite OCA Memory is attending Chinese culture camp when I was first introduced to the OCA community and began to participate in Chinese Dance.

Personal Statement

Currently I am suffering from acute Senioritis☺. Though the end of the year is very near and many things are tying up, there is still the reality that I have over-involved my-self. I love being involved but sometimes push it a bit too far to the extreme; I don't hon-estly know if I will ever change that because being a busy bee is very much my personality.

My largest projects currently are creating and organizing various parts of our Senior Graduation, setting up my Senior Art Show, preparing my predecessor to take over as Chair of the Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, beginning to direct a play for our upcoming student play festival, and finishing off our last issue of my school's newspaper.

My OCA graduation party I remember the fun and excitement of being with friends whom I had grown up with. We were done with high school! It was sad in a way because we were going in different directions. However, it was also a very happy time. The world lay in front of us with exciting new horizons to explore and more challenges to face and overcome! I was confident my friends would do very well.

I am a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I like it, but there are a lot of students and I’m used to going to a small school. I was think-ing about transferring to a smaller school, but haven’t made any decisions about that yet. I am also unde-cided about my major at the moment, but am lean-ing towards studying com-munication disorders and going on to grad school to become a speech/language pathologist. I keep myself active with school and with working in a daycare. I also enjoy attending a worship/Bible study on Tuesday nights called The Ave that is lo-cated on Marquette’s cam-pus.

Personal Statement

I live and work in St. Paul, Minnesota, where I moved after medical school and went into residency. After completing my Internal Medicine training at the University of Min-nesota in 2000, I took a job with HealthPartners at Regions Hospital where I am a hospi-talist. This means my practice is entirely composed of patients who are admitted into the hospital. In 2006 I also began consulting in Palliative care. While I enjoy treating patients who are acutely ill, I also have a passion for those who are dying.

Since 2006, I have been a leader and administrator for our hospitalist group (now 60 providers) and for Regions hospital. Half of my job is administrative. Examples of my ac-countabilities include oversight of Hospital Medicine, primary care (Internal medicine, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology), quality, physician practice, and strategic growth and development. I am also a faculty member of the University of Min-nesota Medical School and am involved nationally with the Society of Hospital Medicine.

Beyond work life, I enjoy traveling, often on my own, without much more purpose than to experience something new and get away from all that is familiar. The more distant and unique it is the better. When I have a moment, I like to read or get a good run or bike ride in.

My OCA graduation party It was a great success at China Buffet; the food was great, we had a good turnout and we did a great job of decorating and making it an engaging fun filled time for everyone there.

I am currently a sophomore at Loyola University Chi-cago finishing up my sec-ond year here. Living in Chicago has been a blast thus far! I’ve gotten to ex-perience so much of the fun filled city life that Chicago has to offer from Millenium Park, St. Patty’s day pa-rade, jazz and comedy clubs, discount tickets to Phantom of the Opera or Blue Man Group and so much more. The course load at school is pretty heavy, but manageable as long as I keep organized with my day to day activi-ties. Right now, I just be-gan an internship down-town right next to the Sears Tower at a financial con-sulting firm called Source Media that I am excited about! It is really hard for a sophomore with little ex-perience in the business world to get internship without experience but thankfully to some lucky networking I was able to land one.

Just a year earlier, my brother Bryan had graduated from high school and left Milwaukee to head west to Stanford University – he has never left California since. Schooling then took me to medical school at Georgetown in Washington, DC (and Grace to the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia). We married in our final year of medical school. Next for both of us was internal medicine training at the University of Pennsylvania, where we stayed for our respective fellowships: Grace in endocrinology, and myself in gastroen-terology (GI). While at Penn, we were truly blessed with the birth of our two daughters, Emily and Natalie. I cannot remember (and would never want to imagine) life without them. We have been very lucky to have the love and support of both of our parents – and our mothers (especially) have been a huge help with raising our girls.

My OCA graduation party I remember it was at the Peony res-

taurant and it was very informative to have the graduates from

previous years speak about their college experiences. It made me

so much more excited to begin the quest through college and even-

tually a career.

My life has been very busy, which I’m sure is the common answer among everyone! I am very lucky to be a part of the track and field team at Madison, where I am able to make lasting friend-ships, travel the US, and learn so many valuable lessons of hard work and compe-tition. School has also kept me occupied with two majors. I love learning Mandarin, and it helps to have my already existing Can-tonese background. I miss playing the violin as much as I used to, but I try to break it out every once in awhile. I am not sure what I will do exactly after I graduate, so I try to take it one day at a time making the most of my college experi-ence!

This past year I have joined the GI faculty at Penn with a special interest in liver dis-eases. Our family will be relocating to the Bay Area this summer, to take new positions in Palo Alto, CA (not far from Bryan). We are looking forward to the move!

Personal Statement

Greetings from Seattle!

After spending a year as a research assistant at the World Wildlife Fund in Washington, DC, I joined the Peace Corps and was sent to Bolivia, where I worked on a regional com-munity-based tourism initiative in the eastern tropical lowlands. I returned to Milwaukee in late 2000 and began working at Alterra Coffee Roasters, initially as the Projects & Communications Coordinator and later as the Director of Culture & Communications. In early January 2008, I moved to Seattle to work for a small specialty-coffee importer as their Director of Relationship Development. I am managing the company’s relationships with coffee producers around the world and have begun traveling to meet them in person. Recently I spent two weeks in Colombia and will be going to Ethiopia, Guatemala, Nicara-gua, and other countries over the next year.

Favorite OCA memory I really enjoyed the folk fair every year. There was one year where we performed a drum dance for the children’s program. I remember having to consume a lot of shoestring potatoes for snacks during Chinese School prior to the folk fair weekend, so that we could use the canisters to make our drums with.

Personal Statement

I moved out to Portland, OR immediately after college to take my first full-time job with Hewlett-Packard. My initial intention was to do this for 3-5 years and then move on to something else. Over the next 12 years, my position at HP has changed a bit and I am now living in the suburbs of Portland (Camas, WA), but I am still here! I did take a brief hiatus from my job to get my master’s down in the Bay Area, but decided that the Pacific NW was home and returned after obtaining my degree.

My OCA graduation party Peony Restaurant

I am a junior biology major and environ-mental studies minor at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. I spent last summer on a conservation-based study abroad program in the Great Bear Rain-forest of British Colum-bia. I will be returning there this summer to teach science to Heiltsuk First Nation youth at a summer camp and continue the field work I started last year.

My job at HP is a mechanical engineer, working on designing high-end commercial ink-jet products. We recently introduced our first multi-function copier product, based on ink-jet technology. I love what I do and the interesting and smart people that I have worked with over the years. However, I have found that it is most important to have a job that al-lows flexibility for a fulfilling personal life outside of work.

I recently gave birth to our second son, Austin. Our older son, Tristan, is almost 2. The past couple of years have been very much dedicated to taking care of babies. We hope to someday be able to get a little more sleep. But, for now, we are very much enjoy-ing seeing things through their eyes for the first time.

I got my teaching certification and master’s degree within a year and have been teaching now for 2 years in Mil-waukee Public Schools. I’m happy to have summers and holidays off! We have to move into the city of Milwaukee this summer, due to residency rules. We love spending time with our families, since they are both in the area.

The biggest event happening in my life right now is I just became a mom! My husband Ethan and I welcomed our daughter Adina An-Yee Kushner on Feb. 22, 2008. My OCA graduation party My graduation party was held at UWM celebrating our accomplishments of high school. Everyone was very excited to be able to share our experiences with our scholarship donors, friends and family. We ended the night with dancing!

I wanted to first take this oppor-tunity to personally thank Drs. Lucio and Conchita Siy for their generous scholarship.

My time since high school graduation has been truly enjoy-able. I spent 4 wonderful years at the University of Notre Dame involved in Student Govern-ment, participating in service projects, studying abroad in Shanghai, and attending football games. I then was accepted into AT&T’s Leadership Develop-ment program where I led a Customer Care team in Chicago, IL, moved to San Antonio, TX to market wireless products, and am currently in Dallas, TX su-pervising a team involved with the U-Verse TV product.

I have enjoyed the experiences of moving around the country and the world. It’s been great to meet new people and see differ-ent places.

Personal Statement

Upon graduating from college (2000), I moved to Cincinnati, OH with my new puppy, Rocky, for a job with P&G in their Research & Development group. But not before I spent 11 weeks in Western Europe traveling around to all the big cities and doing my summer ChE lab class in Oviedo, Spain. Funny, I started work the same day as Dale Ting (fellow OCA recipient). Eventually, I met my future husband, Tom, in Cincinnati through playing on a co-ed recreational soccer team and we were married in Aug. 2004. In Aug 2006, we had our first child – Owen. So now, I try to balance working full-time, being a mom, play-ing soccer games, and evening with friends. Since Tom isn’t from Cincinnati or Milwaukee – we spend a lot of our time flying all over the country to visit friends and relatives.

At Procter & Gamble, I’ve worked on a variety of products and brands from Febreze to Downy to Mr. Clean. I’ve also have experienced working on different areas of R&D. Being its a global company has enabled me to see other parts of the world and work with people all over the world. I also lead recruiting P&G – R&D recruiting at the University of Wis-consin which allows me a trip back to the university and relive my college memories.

When I moved back, I decided to switch to viola and audi-tioned for a master’s program. In 2004, my brother Al and I drove from Milwaukee to San Francisco. I got my degree in two years but decided to stay for another year freelancing as a musician. This past fall, I moved back to Madison where I started a doctorate program in music. I will hopefully be graduating in 2010 with a Doctor of Musical Arts in viola per-formance with a minor in Business.

I recently got engaged and am planning on moving up to the Bay area to join my fiancée. That may be the last ma-jor move in my life as I love the area and want to stay there. It is the land of cheap groceries, good Asian restaurants and iceless winters.

One of my major hobbies is food, so we’re working on a food website www.foozoo.org. The goal is for everyone to be able to find the Fortune restaurant of their area.

I’ve been married since 2001 to Brian, who I met at Bradley, and we just bought our second condo in Chicago, in the Lakeview neighborhood. Brian works as a solutions engineer for Veri-zon Business and completed an MS in Information Technology at Northwestern in 2006. Now it’s my turn to be in grad school, and I’m doing the LEEP program in Library and Information Science through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which means I’m taking classes that meet live online, and I physically go to campus once per semester. My plan is to graduate in December and then try to get a professional position as an academic art librarian at a college, university, or museum library. I’m also working full-time as the Art Collection Manager at Northwestern University Library, and I occasionally give tours and talks at the Art Institute of Chicago, where I worked for a few years after I graduated from the School of the Art Institute. One of these days I’m hoping to have some more free time.

I am very thankful for the support of the OCA and all of its members.

I got married to Luke in October of 2006. He is a youth pastor at a church called Woodridge in New Berlin.

22, 2008. We live in Seattle and are looking forward to lots of fun activities with our baby girl this summer. We cherish our time with our family and friends; many of which are also fellow OCA scholar-ship recipients.

Professionally, I have been working as a user experience designer at Microsoft since com-pleting graduate school at MIT in 2004. I work on Visual Studio software and find my job to be challenging and rewarding.

I did take a brief hiatus from my job to get my master’s down in the Bay Area, but decided that the Pacific NW was home and returned after obtaining my degree.

so much more excited to begin the quest through college and even-

Personal Statement

Just a year earlier, my brother Bryan had graduated from high school and left Milwaukee to head west to Stanford University – he has never left California since. When it was my turn, I headed to the opposite coast to Harvard College, where, among many wonderful ex-periences, the most important was meeting Grace during my sophomore year.

Afterwards, I completed a one year fellowship in musculoskeletal imaging in San Diego. And that was only 3 years ago. Currently I am a radiologist at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Mountain View, CA and also serve as a Clinical Instructor at Stanford.

My OCA graduation party I remember the fun and excitement of being with friends whom I had grown up with. We were done with high school! The world lay in front of us with exciting new horizons to explore and more challenges to face and overcome! I was confident my friends would do very well.

Learning is all academic – get

involved with other activities.

-Jerry King ‘92

Advice to the Grads

Never forget your roots or your

family. By far, my family is the

most important aspect of my life.

Achievements, honors, awards,

and money are wonderful – but by

themselves cannot give you true,

lasting happiness.

-Erick P. Chan ‘91

Set your goals long term and strive

for them. Don’t be down on yourself

with any obstacles that may get in

the way.

-Ludwig Moy ‘97

Get a job. Get Married. Pay your taxes.

Use Compact Fluorescent bulbs. Don’t

watch reality TV, it rots your brain.

-Weikang Nicholas Ni ‘04

Since we’ve already established that I am al-

most ready to qualify for “old geezer” status, I

do have a few misshapen pearls of wisdom to

offer:

Life is what you make of it. If you suffer a set-

back, don’t dwell on it; just pick yourself off

and move on.

Always do a quality job on whatever task you

are working on, no matter how menial.

Treat everyone you work with in business with

respect, including and especially service peo-

ple, support staff and those who work for you.

Sometimes these people can really be helpful

to you in emergencies, so it’s good to be

friendly with them.

Also, always make full use of your resources.

Make sure you take the time to participate in

different activities in college, take different

classes, and meet different people. Whether at

work or at school, don’t be afraid to ask people

for help. Most people want to be helpful, and

those that aren’t, aren’t really worth your time.

-Elaine Lee ‘88

First of all, congratulations! You have made it through a very impor-

tant milestone! I am sure you are feeling very excited about your

future. I remember how I felt in your shoes nearly 20 years ago!

Undoubtedly you are already on solid footing because of the care,

attention, and love that your parents gave to you all these years.

Great times are ahead! In terms of advice, I would advise the gradu-

ates to cherish their personal relationships. You each will accom-

plish many great things. However, in the final analysis, you will find

that the most important things in life are the solid relationships that

you develop over your lifetime. One final word of advice- don't

forget your parents! As you mature, you will find them to be a great

source of wisdom and also find them to be wonderful friends. Best

wishes to you all!

-Lambert Wu ‘89

Page 80: OCA-WI Scholarship 20th Anniversary

Participate in as many activities as you can in college

Volunteer somewhere

Don’t eat or drink too much (the freshman 15 is not a myth)

Get to know your professors

Enjoy every day of the college experience before it is gone

-William Kao ‘04

Do as many internships as you possibly

can—this is how you’ll find out whether

you really like what you’ve set out to do.

Also, if you plan to go to graduate school,

it’s a good idea to get some work experi-

ence in the field beforehand. You’ll know

that much more than people who have

never been in “the real world.”

You’ll get out of school what you put into

it, and don’t forget that it probably won’t

be a straight line from classes to a job.

Sometimes the other things you do in

your life lead to good things for your fu-

ture too.

-Lindsay King ‘96

Enjoy your new-found independ-

ence as you leave home for the first

time. Travel as much as possible;

experience new opportunities as

they are presented to you; do as

many crazy things as you are in-

clined to try. The next 15 years

will fly by faster than you can

imagine (you will probably not

fully realize this until you get

there). It is really nice to be able to

think back to those days and recall

all the fun things I experienced, and

to have great friendships with peo-

ple that I met during that time.

-Angela Chen ‘92

Don’t be afraid of the unknown. You don’t need to know all of the answers…what’s more impor-tant is that you’re asking the right questions, even

of yourself.

Cherish your family and friends. Accept and love your parents for everything that they are. They

love you in the best way they know, and they know more than you think they do.

Find and nurture your passions.

Learn something from every situation. Learn to laugh at yourself. Ask yourself how you can be of service to others, then go do it. Foster a sense of gratitude. Believe in karma now, because as you

go through life, you’ll see that it exists.

Set your goals, work hard, and whatever the out-come, remember that everything happens for a reason…everything unfolds as it should.

-Carmelita Tiu ‘93

When you’re tired, step away from the

computer.

-Sarah Wong ‘05

If you put in the time and effort, great

things will come. Don’t expect any-

thing to fall onto your lap – you have

to earn it!!

-Terri Moy ‘93

Get actively involved with organiza-

tions that you feel strongly about…as

this is great way to give back to causes

you feel are important and it also be-

comes the most effective method of in-

formal networking. –Milton Hwang ‘89

Page 82: OCA-WI Scholarship 20th Anniversary

A Look Back

Page 83: OCA-WI Scholarship 20th Anniversary

Try as many things as you can in college. There will never be

another time in your life where you have so many opportuni-ties thrown at you. Don’t care about what other people think and be yourself, it will be more

fulfilling.

-Erica Hong ‘01

Don’t worry too much about

choosing what you are going to

do “for the rest of your life”

right away. Enjoy the time that

you have in college or whatever

you choose to do, because it will

go fast. Your career will fall

right into place if you work hard

and pursue what interests you.

Keep in touch with old friends,

but make new ones. Don’t for-

get about your family and tell

them you love them often!

-Amy (Moy) Dufek ‘02

Don’t be too scared if you don’t know exactly what you want to do when you start college. Col-lege is when you get to figure that out. I would say in general, don’t be afraid to do too much of anything in college. Make sure to take a few classes that have nothing to do with your major. I took a storytelling class my senior year and it was one of the courses that had a large impact on my life. Try to live off campus for at least one year so you learn how to deal with things like leases and landlords. Finally, choose your friends wisely: the friends you make in college will probably be the ones you take with you for the rest of your life. Focus on quality over quantity. -Justin Koh ‘98

Always believe in yourself.

-Wen Tyan Soo ‘93

Do what is in your heart, and take any opportunities that may arise. Understand that there are never mistakes, just ex-periences that let you grow to become a better person.

-Linda Ting ‘99

Take the time to explore new fields

and redefine your priorities – no need

to rush things!

- Diana Wu ‘96

Enjoy Life. Take this time to edu-cate yourself holistically – academi-cally, practically, and culturally.

Work Hard to Play Hard. –Wendy Gong ‘95

Like my dad says, “take time

to smell the roses.”
