PERÔ OR THE MYSTERIES OF THE NIGHT

One morning, in the tiny village of Fanghetto, there is no fresh bread. A notice pinned to the bakery door reads: Closed (due to lovesickness).

What has happened? Perô, the baker, is unhappy. The girl next door, Colombina, who he has been in love ever since she started school, has run off with Paletino, the painter/decora-tor. Will Colombina ever end up loving shy Perô? Or has Paletino enchanted her forever with his lively colours and happy small-talk?

The premier of Perô or the Secrets of the Night was a tremendous success in 1994, drawing full audiences. Perô went on an international tour.

The play is based on Pierrot ou les secrets de la nuit, a children’s book written by the French author/philoso-pher Michel Tournier. Guus Ponsioen adapted the story and composed the music. In the new version, Annemarie Maas and Guus Ponsioen again play the musicians’ roles of Sun and Moon. The young puppeteers/actors Inez de Bruijn and Tim Velraeds play the roles of Perô, Colombina and Paletino.

Perô or the mysteries of the night re-ceived several awards, last but not least in January 2008 when the performance received the Victor Award at the Inter-national Showcase in Tampa, Florida.

SPEELTHEATER HOLLAND

Speeltheater Holland was founded in 1976 by Saskia Janse and Onny Huisink. Since then it has developed into a tour-ing theatre company with a core of ten permanent members that has its base in Edam, The Netherlands.

Speeltheater Holland creates theatre performances (mainly) intended for children. Highly important in the production of plays are artistic qual-ity and the development of a personal style. The productions include the use of puppets combined with theatre and/or other theatrical disciplines. For each production Speeltheater Holland uses different (puppet) techniques and other theatrical means. However all perfor-mances share a strong visual sense.

For each production Speeltheater Holland engages new actors, pup-peteers and sometimes guest direc-tors, and if required, depending on the nature of the performance, other experts such as composers, musicians, authors, choreographers, etc. In ad-dition to developing and presenting performances Speeltheater Holland also seeks to be a breeding ground for young (puppet) theatre makers and a place where new forms of co-operation can be experimented with. To this end,

small-scale projects are regularly set up in Speeltheater Holland’s own theatre. Speeltheater Holland performs in smaller and medium-sized theatres and prefers black box auditoriums.

Speeltheater Holland received vari-ous prizes and nominations for their productions. In 2007 Speeltheater Holland was awarded a prize for their long and outstanding contribution to children’s theatre in the Netherlands. They also received three awards for the performance of Perô or the mysteries of the night, one of which was in Zagreb, Croatia.

Speeltheater Holland has always strived to perform its productions in an international scene. Most of the international productions are based in the United States but tours have also included Austria, The United Kingdom, Belgium, Croatia, Bonaire, Germany and, in 2006, South Africa.

Since 1997 Speeltheater Holland has maintained an alliance with the Seattle Children’s Theatre. This alliance has resulted in many successful productions.

Speeltheater Holland is structurally subsidized by the Performing Arts Fund NL and the Provincial authority of North-Holland.

THE ARTISTS

TIMMY VELRAEDS (actor) quickly knew that he wanted to work in the puppet theatre business during his theatre studies in Zwolle and Amsterdam.

Due to the inspiring guidance from Elout Hol (Theater Gnaffel), Timmy learned the essentials of working with puppets and performed in several shows. Besides performing, Timmy is also active as director and production assistant at both Stuffed Puppet Theater (supervised by Neville Tranter) and Quade&Paive (supervised by Ulrike Quade). Furthermore, Timmy is theatre producer of the street performance group Tiramisu.

Together with Meike van den Akker and Marlyn Coetsier, Timmy belongs to a new and inspiring generation in puppet theatre in the Netherlands.

ANNEMARIE MAAS (vocals, piano, saxophone) has been active, both vocal and acting, at different (youth) theatre organisations since 1991. In the past, Annemarie played for the following organisations: Speeltheater Holland and Theatergroep Wederzijds. Besides acting, Annemarie gives concerts in different styles: jazz, classical and pop music. Furthermore, Annemarie composes songs herself and made her own CD By nature (accompanied by pianist Martin Rudolph). Annemarie is well know for her intense voice and lyric involvement, which results in an amazing listening experience.

In the anniversary show Perô of de geheimen van de nacht (Perô or the secrets of the night) of Speeltheater Holland, Annemarie shows herself to be a true artist by quickly switching from playing the saxophone to singing

and from singing to acting, in which, she says, singing is always a way of expressing the lyrics.

INEZ DE BRUIJN (actor) finished her theatre studies at the theatre school of Arnhem in 2003. After her studies, she played for several organisations, directed by Alize Zandwijk (RO-Theater) and Olivier Provily. At the same time, Inez produced some of her own work at Generale Oost, a theatre workshop, in cooperation with Bram Coopmans, which led to a place in the series “Serie Nieuwe Theatermakers” (series new theatre producers). Furthermore, Inez played in youth performances, from both Theatre group Kwatta and Speeltheater Holland.

Besides acting on stage, Inez is also on television. Last year she played a main character in the successful series

”Rozengeur en Wodkalime”. Next year, Inez will be playing Ronja, the main character in the play Ronja de Roversdochter from Youth theatre Het Laagland.

GUUS PONSIOEN (music and text) started his career at the Dutch Cabaret as composer, singer and supervisor of Vangrail (winner Cameretten 1674). In that period his interest in dramatically, visually and musically performing texts increased which made him decide to fully concentrate on serious theatre. Ever since, Guus wrote a lot of music and lyrics for several national and international theatre groups for example the Freiburger Kinder- und Jugendtheater in Germany or theatre group Wederzijds, where several co-productions with writer and director Ad de Bont were made. A lot of these plays were nationally and

internationally acknowledged with nominations and awards.

His theatre version of writer Michel Tournier´s Perô or the secrets of the night, in cooperation with Speeltheater Holland, took Guus to America where he continued to write and compose. Together with Suzanne van Lohuizen, Guus wrote his first comic opera for children in 1999.

ONNY HUISINK (director, co-founder, artistic leader) and SASKIA JANSE (playwright, co-founder, artistic leader) Onny Huisink is the director and designer of most of the plays of Speeltheater Holland. Besides his work for Speeltheater Holland he worked as an actor and as guest director and designer for other companies.

Saskia Janse is the playwright of Speeltheater Holland. Besides her work as a playwright she designed

puppets for several shows of Speeltheater Holland and other companies. She designed and made the puppets for Perô.

Together Saskia and Onny are the co-founders and artistic leaders of Speeltheater Holland.

During their career they received many awards for their plays and two oeuvre awards. Founded in 1976, the company performs theatre for children using a combination of acting and puppetry. Their performances range in size from plays using one to three actors to large-scale productions. Their productions play all over Europe, South Africa and in the USA in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and the Sundance Festival in Utah. The group is subsidized by the Dutch government and is one of the largest and most prestigious puppet theatre companies for children in Holland.
